    I have been using an iPad Pro for years as part of my drawing process in that I used it for rough sketches before putting pencil or pen to paper. I bought the nano texture glass and found that drawing on that surface a much better experience. So much so, that I have been moving towards using my iPad not only as a rough sketch tool, but as the tool for complete projects.

      Same here - I’m not sure if you’ve tried out stands but I hugely recommend large easel style stands like the sketchboard pro 2 or astropad darkboard or charjenpro’s sketch 360
      Neither have updated to the M4 yet (really slow!) but they make a very meaningful difference - imo - an essential accessory to be able to take advantage of the whole iPad surface
      I’m definitely putting out a review when it comes out

    Love your videos man! I feel like you're the only "reviewer" that actually understands the way I feel about the iPad.
    Finally managed to upgrade from the Regular 6th Gen iPad to the 13 Inch iPad Pro (with Paperlike!) and it feels amazing! The Nano Texture is waaay out of my budget currently (the regular screen was already a huge investment lol) but I feel like this is gonna last me a good long while!
    The only thing that surprised me was how hard you gotta squeeze on the Apple Pencil Pro to activate the Squeeze function. Not really a problem, just a "huh" moment.

    One thing that stopped me from upgraiding to m4 with the nano - texture is the fact that, from my experience thin mate protective layers often scratch quite fast. On my paper-like the scratches build up very quickly, but most of them are manageable and hard to see when the screen is on. But once sit in the sun i see them even when the screen is on. Then when you have a deeper scratch it causes color fringing inside that scratch you can’t un-see it even in the dark.
    Nano-texture being permanently attacked to the ipad makes me wary that if it were to get any of these “deep” scratches that can cause color fringing i’m stuck with it, and boi i know i’d be unable to ignore that. The paper-like i can just replace, of course it’s a pain to replace still, you have the option. Furthermore, i’ve tested others like bellemond. they have worse image quality but don’t suffer from scratches like the paper-like does. Often with other thicker third party screen protectors a wipe from a cloth wipes most of the scratches away. Now if nano - texture would work like that even “deeper” scratches you can just wipe away then i’d be less wary.

    • @AdamDuffArt
      @AdamDuffArt  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      A very common concern - I wouldn’t pack my keys in with my iPad for sure (without a case over it) but there’s a great video of someone seriously stress testing the screen - it’s not as good as the standard glass for scratches but it is very resistant so long as you aren’t trying to deliberately scratch it

    • @arnoldmerks
      @arnoldmerks 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@AdamDuffArt Yes i did see some tests, and keys funny enough don’t cause permanent scratches on it(as long as you don’t put too much force i assume) I’ve not had the chance to find one with nano texture in stores to test yet. Perhaps that is for the better as i spend way too easily on new shiny tech. Last time i went there i had to wait for my m2 ipad pro 12.9 inch with 1tb, because apparently it’s pretty uncommon that people purchase that spec and didn’t have it in store.
      Last thing i’d like to mention is that the 1tb model has 16gb of ram, together with the m2/m4 chip 3d artist can use it as a on the go 3d sculpting/modeling device. So to say the ipad is overpowered? For most yes but for others it opened doors. If your curious nomad sculpt is available for ipad and zbrush is coming later for it. these programs really benefit from more ram and the new m chips.

      @@AdamDuffArt Guys, even I wish to get the nano texture version, I can not afford that price tag, so I got 256gb entry level and yet I still paid $150 for apple care plus, incase I scratch the device or screen somehow. SO, if you can ditch 2K just to get nano texture version, it's no brainer to get it with AppleCare plus. BTW I will probably get nano version when they make it available for every version of iPad Pro, probably next year. ( I made this comment before going thru the video until the end where you also mention the same thing as well)

    I used to have an M1 until an unfortunate event happened with it. Ended up upgrading to the M4 pro due to the oled screen. It’s not nano textured but I love drawing on it, though I might be one of those people who likes drawing on glass. Pencil Hover is a nice feature but I really love the Apple Pencil squeeze function.

  • @studiodreamy
    @studiodreamy 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I am really glad to hear that the texture isn’t really rough. I use an ICarez matte screen protector. Which is the best texture I have found so far, it is smooth and matte and has just enough “texture” without being rough. In comparison, every other “paper-like” protector I haven’t liked. They usually feel like drawing on concrete, (and like sandpaper on the fingers). I especially love it paired with a metal pen tip. So if anyone wants a budget friendly option, I would highly recommend it. Also, if you are using metal tips, I would suggest adjusting your pen pressure settings so you’re not pressing so hard on your screen, this will prevent scratches.

    I would love to see this finish on more devices. I love it that much. I was in store comparing the two displays and asked another customer what they thought, and the described the differences as looking through an open window rather than looking through its glass, and it clicked for me! When viewed from a normal distance, the ever so slight reduction in sharpness is basically a non issue for me. Yes, in bright rooms the ambient light will diffuse across the display, reducing contrast, but in mid to low light, it’s another non issue. I compared my M1 to my M4 side by side and found the difference to be negligible. So while there are some drawbacks, each one can be mitigated rather easily and the upsides are more than worth the trade off. Hope this can help someone else with their decision!

    Love my nano texture.. I think another reason was they got bit hard with their keyboard issues on the last macbook change, and there's a lot of things that can go wrong with a new, textured glass on something that's handled, drawn on, used and abused like an iPad screen. I also think this was very deliberate, but not only to test the waters and see what artists like, but to sort of vet out the tech and make sure there's no huge flaws.
    Imagine if there's some issue where the texture wears off after a few months (it doesn't), or some other big problem and Apple has to start replacing nano-texture screens en-mass. If they'd made it available to all models, that's millions of dollars in replacements and another huge black eye. If it's just for professionals buying higher end devices.. well, it's a much more manageable population, and generally users who are a bit more understanding of technology (obviously, not all of them, but more your average person on the street).
    So yeah, pretty sure this was a very deliberate soft-launch of the best thing to hit iPads since the pencil. Just upgraded my mini to the new one, and instantly cringed at the sticky-slick feel of the bare glass again. Have to go buy a drawing film asap.

    I’d like to know how this nano texture glass holds up over time. What will it be like after 6 months of use? After 1 year? After 2 years? Will this type of glass scratch or chip off easily, or is it durable? Can I put the iPad in my bag to take it with me when I go out without worrying about the glass getting scratched or chipped? Durability is my number 1 concern when it comes to a nano texture glass screen.

    The truth is, it's better to have good tools from the start. Otherwise, you won't know if your work is lacking because of your skills or if you're being limited by the tools you're using. It's like painting - if the paints are of poor quality, the artwork will suffer. Invest in and try out the latest and best options available. Another example is how carving knives can be replaced by an electric tool that's easier and safer to use.

    I tried using the nano iPad at an Apple store for about 15 minutes and went back another week and tried it again. I just didn’t like it. For some reason I like the smooth glass and the nano just felt weird to draw on. I’ve used Wacom tablets (not the screen ones, but Intuous Pro) and liked the way those felt, but for the iPad I prefer regular glass. I like how the screen looks better, too. Colors are more vibrant. I absolutely hate screen protectors like Paperlike and have tried a couple of those. It will be interesting to see if the nano glass wears down the Pencil more over time. Or, alternatively, if the pencil wears down areas on the glass (I wouldn’t think that would happen, but you never know).

      I own a Wacom Cintiq Pro 27 and an iPad Pro M4 13inch with Nano Glass, Apple Pencil Pro. I can say confidently that the drawing experiences on the Wacom Cintiq Pro 27 is still better, not by much but the finer pen tip of the Wacom Pro Pen 3 has a softer nicer feel because it actually moves slightly when applying pressure. The Apple Pencil tip is rigid and thicker so it feels a bit harder and you cant see under the tip as well as you can with the Wacom Pro Pen 3. Also buttons do make life better. Wacom's lift off (hover) distance is greater as well. It's far more enjoyable to draw on the cintiq due to it's 27inch display size and it also works on windows as well as Mac. This is actually a big deal if Apple wants to de thrown Wacom because there are armies of artists on Windows machines in vfx production and game studios around the world. I just don't see Apple replacing their Wacoms anytime soon unless Apple is willing to support Windows. With that said, the iPad Pro M4 with Nano glass is incredible! I've owned the standard glass which i returned for the Nano glass. It's true that the glass is very similar to the Cintiq's glass and the feel of the nano is exactly what I'm looking for as an Artist... because it's exactly like my Wacom Cintiq's 27's glass. Although the finer tip of the Wacom pen interfaces with the etching better than the apple pencil does so the Wacom glass actualyl feels a ltitle more textured thanks to the finer tip. Still I love the ipad pro M4 Nano. It is the perfect mobile sketchbook. I can't wait to run Zbrush on it. I've been using ZBrush for a long time now as ZBrush 3d professional on Windows. The iPad Pro M4 Nano is like a dream for any digital artist. It's amazing such a device exists and having done digital art work for 30 years now... I'm absolutely blown away by BOTH the ipad Pro M4 Nano and the Wacom Cintiq Pro 27. These two devices are best in class. I dont think either beats the other. They have their strengths and very little negatives if any. The Cintiq Pro 27 is a desktop workstation pen display for serious sit down and get shit done work... and the iPad Pro M4 is a diverse, self contained computer/pen display that is mobile, light and easy to take anywhere and jsut draw like it's a sketch book. I own both and honestly I think everyone would benefit from having both a larger desktop pen display for home an iPad Pro M4 or M2 for mobile drawing or drawing around the house, outside in the park or your backyard, or wherever you're inspired. One last thing about the iPad Pro M4... imagine if they made a 27 inch or 32 inch version that was it's own self contained computer that could also double as a desktop pen display for your Mac. That will truly be incredible but unfortunately the market for that is probably a lot smaller so I dont know when or if Apple will even dare to make one... but they certainly could. Even if so, I think Wacom is going to be just fine because there is zero chance of Apple supporting Windows.

    Adam my concern is with the OLED screen. I say this because I had a Samsung Tablet for years before I bought my M2 iPad Air(for the apple pencil pro) and after only about a year I had some burn in on the screen. not in the sense of an image like UI element. but more so a hue shift on each half of the screen. I drew for around 6 to 8 hours a day. so I wouldn't expect it so soon but eventually I feel it would happen. and I plan to use my iPad for at least 3 to 5 years. I made a video on the iPad Pro expressing my concerns. I was wondering if you could do a follow up in a year or two on if you get burn in or not.

    Hi Adam! Thank you for yor review, always enjoy watching your videos!
    I recently tried the nano texure ipad too and definitely agree that it's very very nice and I feel it's really ment for artists as you mentioned. I own\owned three generations of ipad pros but recently switched from the ipad pro 12.9 to samsung galaxy tab ultra due to the larger size and wacom pen tech. Somehow I couldn't make the apple pencil work for me, hover made it better for sure but still the combo of ios and apple pencil ended up not being my thing. I miss Artstudio pro (thank you for showing it off btw) but since making clipstudio brushes behaving like photoshop's it's very workable. For me the killer feature of the samsung is the the ability to connect a wacom screen and use it with pro pen 3, maybe you'll be interested in trying out this combo at some point (my exact one is s9 ultra + wacom movink). Another benefit of the samsung stuff is the pen, it has buttons and you dont have to charge it (I forgot to charge my apple pencil more then once haha) and wacom pens that work with samsung are pretty cheap so I ended up with three just in case and they are different shapes so I can pick and choose what feels nice today lol.
    I'm a concept artist and am very attached to the photoshop way of things so really appreciate your reviews knowing that they come from a similar background and experience.
    Cheers, have a great day!

That being said, if I manage to save up, I'd love to get 1TB minimum for extra RAM. I'd like to do more 3D sculpting on Nomad Sculpt and taking advantage of M4 for rendering. I already use sidecar it a lot, but my Ipad is a 2017 ipad pro. I wanted to see reviews using hover with side car and talking about the experience, because I wanna know if it's worth upgrading my ipad or keeping it as it is and buying a standard pen dispay. I've read that most pen displays, besides wacom's, use 60hz screens, while ipad pros have 120hz, how does this compare? I'm interest in that type of thing. Neverthless, thank you for your video. I also agree that the next iteration will have nanotexture as an open option for all. Apple alread does this to the iphone: iphone 15 is just the same as a 14 pro.

    I want one of these so bad, I can't wait to buy one. How is your studio? Did it get dried out?

    Is there any chance that the texture is going to scrape/rub off, like how it would on a cintiq? After a lot of heavy use on pen displays, you usually find that one spot in the middle that has just turned back into smooth glass.

    For those newbie or aspiring artists watching this. You don't need expensive tool like this to be a good artist. If you like to watch ergo josh or this channel probably you are spending big money for tools you don't need.

      Exactly - the tool doesn’t make the artist, the artist does.

      You can grab the cheapest iPad and create great work. As you spend more money you gain more convenience, power, and speed which is nice once you are making a living from your art. However, I have an M2 iPad Pro and a 24 inch huion kamvas pro, both great, but I create the majority of my artwork now with a cheap huion tablet (610 model about 50 bucks).

    thank you for doing this. And I hope apple heard you. cause i really can't afford a new ipad pro right now. I'm still on my 1st gen 12" ipad pro. It's still great but overtime, the pen charging butt and screen brightness gets to you. plus the fact that it's missing the hover feature. I would like to get that nano textured glass instead of a screen protecter. thank you again, good sir!

    I bought the m4 ipad pro with normal screen texture. Its kinda frustrating that it was locked to the 1tb 2tb ipad, it was just too expensive. Its a shame that I missed out.

    I hope someone out there just makes a screen protector w the nano texture :/ don’t like the removable screen protector for drawing, way too matted and thick for me.

    It's so expensive tho. Wish they brought nano to the m2 ipad air, or at least the lower storage models of the pros. 1tb for an iPad is insane, at least for me personally.

    I have the M1, and I barely use it, way too small. I can't stand looking at that 12.9 inch screen. This one is 13 inch and not a big difference, so it's a hard pass for me. The only Ipad I'm getting next is the 16 inch with nano texture, if that ever happens. When that happens I'll sell my Cintiq and my M1 Ipad.

    technology helps to boost the artistries but it doesn't do to produce an artist..

    My general rule for new tech is wait till the second version. The nano + the oled needs a year imo to see how they hold up.
