Thank you! So glad to see a review of the Ryzen SKU. I really do wish integrated webcams would just go to 1080p with the option to downgrade video quality for limited bandwidth. So many meetings now need the webcam to see a room of folks or a whiteboard. Audio was decent.
Very interesting laptop. The webcam is only 720p, which is a disappointment, but compared to 720p cameras on other brands, it actually had better quality. The microphones also sounded pretty good as well. It'll be interesting to see how that alcantara surface holds up over time to heat and oils from the hands.
The improvements you have made over the last few years have been nothing short of amazing! Definitely deserve more subs.

Im wondering why major youtubers like Linus or Dave2d havent at least posted an unboxing yet. This is a really good major step for microsoft
1:06 He says it right here that he paid for this laptop with his own money. The bigger channels like Linus and Dave2D are probably waiting for free laptops from companies like they usually always get 🤷♂️

@@FigWidIt they do tend to buy them on their own too, the issue is that Microsoft launched it out of the blue in the middle of the day. I imagine Linus atleast has a review scheduled but it will probably come in the coming weeks
Dave already posted a vid and said this laptop is a good competitor for the M1 air.
Another great unboxing video. My employer purchased thousands of Surface 3s last year at the start of the pandemic when they had to create a work-from-home strategy from scratch. The units have performed admirably with little retraining other than how to install Cisco VPN software to dial in and WebEx software.
The webcam does look a little better from last year's version to me.
Also, a point with last year's Ryzen chip....those will likely a) be available and b) keep the price down for corporate/government purchasers who buy in bulk.

Nice PC. Camera is okay but a 1080p would be better. Noticed some wobbling on the screen when you put the pen to it. Would be nice to include an SD card slot. Great "First Looks"review.
In the full review please cover the performance on battery power as well. Windows laptop are notorious for dropping performance significantly when not plugged in.

Andrew, I would like to see your review of the new Asus Zenbook 13 OLED. The intel version has deals already for about 1089 euros with 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM, and the screen seems awesome with 100% DCI-P3. And the AMD 5000 series versions are launching or about to launch now.
Could be an amazing small and light laptop for media consumption and videogame streaming services like Stadia, xCloud, etc with that OLED screen and huge battery.
It's just a shame it doesn't have 16:10 aspect ratio for non-media related tasks.

Ordered my Surface 13.5 on Friday. AMD version with 16Gb of ram. It's sad that Microsoft limits the chassis options.... would have loved to get the black or sandstone version with AMD...
Mic and web cam looks and sounded fine. Clarity was pretty good but seemed a little darker but that could just be where you were at moment vs other parts where you were on good light. I would assume with usp c port it would support a hub to get to HDMI out?

Looking to buy this computer for my daughter. Will be mainly for school therefore Office applications e.g Word, Power Point etc...however she wants to get into photo and video editing e.g. Vegas Pro or equivalent. Intel versions are $300 more expensive than AMD's equivalences. Intel is out of their mind. I'll take a 6-core AMD over a 4-core Intel, and keep $300 in my pocket anytime.

Unfortunately, you cant get all-metal version with AMD Ryzen CPU :( as well as 32Gb of ram, only 16Gb and only alcantara

Sorry if this has already been answered. But I am assuming that this processor and laptop is Windows 11 compatible? I cannot seem to get a straight answer anywhere.
Yes, you can upgrade to Windows 11.
A problem with my Surface Laptop is that there seems to be no large format screens to match the pixel resolution of the 3:2 aspect ratio to be able to replicate it fully and efficiently on a large screen. If only a monitor manufacturers would release 2256 x 1504 or 4512 x 3008 resolution monitors.
Why do you need to match it? Just use the resolution of the 2nd screen?
Yuk! I tried it and it's painful. When running the large monitor as a secondary monitor at its optimum resolution it looks great until the surface dock is disconnected (or hiccups), all of the windows that were on the secondary display move to the laptop's primary display making a total shambles.
@@PebblesChan I run a usb c to hdmi cable to an external 34 inch ultrawide with no issues at all. I expect its your cables that are the issue.
When you pull out your cable out, what happens to the apps that were only appearing on the external monitor?

High time for a premium laptop to have 1080p webcam. Since video communication is very common nowadays.
Good review. But what is beyond my understanding is why surface AMD only comes with max 8gb ram while intels goes up to 32gb. This is beyond my frustration with how brands are treating AMD. So much wasted potential

no knife? bummer. but seriously, this machine would have been awesome with 5000 series but as is it's doa.
IMO this is just the same first gen surface laptop with just last gen cpu. Surface laptop will be truly competent when the display gets above 500 nits, bezels become less than half it's current size, webcam becomes 1080p, audio is on par with macbooks and battery becomes around 85kwh. Untill then it looks okay but there are better options...
Until then if it's surface laptop you want, it's better to buy a surface laptop 3 on clearance sale. It's almost the same...
Too bad that the battery is so tiny on these models, especially on the 15". Doesn't help that Microsoft "loves" Linux but doesn't properly support it leaving the coding of the touchpad & keyboard drivers to the community...
Did you realize that the name of the processor in geekbench 5 is, 3580 U. Do you bave an explanation for that ?

Go in to your system settings and check which processor you have. It will be correct there.

For me the Surface Laptop is the most beautiful laptop ever created. Clean AF. It's a shame that they didn't go for the AMD 5000 series instead, mainly for the single thread performance improvement, efficiency and extra cache for some specific tasks.
The Surface Laptop Go intruduced smaller bezels and less reflective screen, I thought they would include both on the Surface Laptop 4 but it seems like they didn't. They haven't added USB 4.0 either.
The screen has amazing aspect ratio and resolution (not FullHD no 4K), but it's too reflective, and colour accuracy and brightness are behind MB, XPS and quite a few other Windows laptops now.
Upgrades are too expensive, equal or more expensive than upgrading a MacBook Aire/Pro M1.
I feel like Microsoft is putting half effort into this.

i just bought the surface laptop 4 with ryzen 5, to be honest the display is really sucks. if you install chrome then browsing using it. the white color is really strong and make the font is not clearly readable and that's make me annoyed
Why are there non-USB4 or Thunderbolt 3 or 4 equipped USB-C ports in mid 2021? Meh on USB-A. This chicken and egg issue will forever be a thing until all new devices dump USB-A like how past old ports were dumped. That proprietary port is more a waste than useful for the 99% of the time. It's a less convenient than USB-C. Could have been two USB-C ports on the right. At least we have the XPS line to move things forward.
Just want to clear up some false info in here. You cannot get this particular machine in all metal. You have to step up to the 15" version to do all metal, unfortunately. Microsoft keeps dropping the ball by ignoring the smaller details and only offering this device in very specific combinations instead of the combinations people want. Hoping Samsung comes through with a compelling Galaxy Book Pro in a couple of weeks.
You can get the 13.5" in metal, these are the black and sand colours. The platinum and new blue ones are with alcantara. 15" is only metal.
@@Manuel-rl6um That's what I'm saying, his particular device (Platinum 13.5") cannot be had in all metal. I think most people would want the Platinum, so it's weird that only black and sandstone are available in metal in that size.

Do not buy this crap if you want to use a 2nd screen the display output signal is not reliable. The great suggestion from MS was to try a wireless display.
