The USB-C port on Surface Laptop 4 supports charging also, so you have everything in one: a break-away plug, USB-C, and the ability to charge from either the left or right side of the laptop. Kind of ideal! (Mac owner here)

Atleast the surface comes with proper dock (allbeit the surface-connector), one thing i do hate with apple is that even the expensive "docks" are just usb-c hubbs and they tend to work poorly.. a dedicated dock and one with magnetic contact is so nice. I do miss the mechanical docks that lenovo used, the new usb-c-side-connecting docks are rubbish and the cable-attached docks are even worse..
with 1 cable you can get 2 external monitors, ethernet, charing, usb-ports.. that cant be beat on a mac, it always need 2 (or more) cables and they will wear out - i have several customers with macbook pros with glitchy usb-c ports.
Also my MBP 15 with 4 ports need to switch around now and then because the ports just randomly stops working.. so much for quality.

I'm amazed at the number of reviewers who do not understand that the Surface 4 laptops have TWO ways of charging - using its proprietary magnetic breakaway charger AND the USB. Even professional tech reviewers do not always understand this although this information is available on the Microsoft website. The two method charging has been the case at least since the previous generation and rumors have it that Apple's Macbooks [Air and Pro] will also incorporate a proprietary charging system in addition to its current USB. The case can be taken apart.

I think you should give the alcantara a try for a while since long term it feels very nice to the touch. My 2019 version does get heat issue on the bottom but since the material is an insulator I don’t feel any heat on the top deck; for this you win some you lose some I guess but it has an intel chip unlike the Ryzen which should be more efficient You can charge the laptop through usb c and you can upgrade the ssd though it’s using a smaller special type (it has a pretty cool magnetic system to hold onto it)

Unless its one of the early alcantara keyboards (that had actually bad durability), the newer ones are much improved and can be cleaned off with a wet microfiber cloth and some gentle rubbing (even microsoft says doing this gently is completely ok). Makes it look brand new. You can also add just a liiiiiiitle of soap to help get the dirt off it. And if you are not dirty with it, it doesn't get dirty at all, it's actually insanely durable for what it is. I know a person who has the Surface Laptop 2 for years since its release that uses it everyday and it still looks clean

One comment. You can upgrade the SSD in the Surface Laptop, though I think its a proprietary SSD (apparently taking examples from Apple in more ways than one). The feet come off and reveal screws to take the keyboard off to get at the SSD.
According to Microsoft the leave Thunderbolt out due to security concerns, much the same concerns that apple use to say they need to solder their RAM and SSDs.

It's Alcantara. And you can take out the access the internals by exposing the screws underneath the rubber on the bottom. Etc. All of these can be learned on the product page, or a light Google search. At least do a little bit of reading on the product before making what I hoped to be an informative video review. (And I'm a Macbook user, so I have no particular incentive to defend Microsoft).

  •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Great video, but you should have done just a little more research before making it:
    - This laptop is made with repairability in mind. Maybe one of the only "premium" laptop-makers that care about it, and they even talk about it at their events. There are completely normal philips screws under each foot, and then that top keyboard cover comes off really easily (it's attached magnetically to the body!! No "plastic clips" holding it that break and get messed up). You can even upgrade the SSD, and all other components are fully modular so that you can replace a single part of the laptop without replacing the whole motherboard.
    - You can charge it just fine via the USB-C port.
    - The "Surface Connect", that proprietary charging port, is actually a magsafe-like connector to use with the Surface Dock, which is one of the best things ever. Imagine a full "one single cable setup" and that the cable is magnetic. How cool is it to dock/undock the cable instantly? :D Also it works both ways (like usb-c) and I love how flush it stays with the laptop (you almost don't see it connected)..
    - There's a metal version of this laptop in other colors, for the same price
    - The metal versions don´t have any flex whatsoever, the flex in this version is because the "alcantara" top is not as solid as aluminum
    - Some people actually love the alcantara top, and the newer versions almost never wear out over time and are easy to clean and keep clean, makes the laptop feel much more confortable to use for long periods specially when you use short sleeve tshirts. (skin directly in contact with laptop, on aluminum ones it gets sweaty and unconfortable and feels cold)
    - The front lip you complained about will wear out a little and get rounded off by itself. Still, the wedge shape that this laptop has and the "slightly rounded" bottom makes this one of the most confortable laptops to use for hours. And also, once again, the metal version is different and doesn't have this kind of design on the bottom lip, it has a more "common" design. And finally, I had the Surface Laptop 3 in the past and now I have the Macbook Pro M1 and I can tell you the MBP is miles worse in terms on bottom lip confort. It literally feels like it "cuts" into my wrists if I use it with short sleeved tshirts...
Final note: having the alcantara keyboard cover is awesome because you can literally slam shut the laptop everytime without worrying about it, and it makes the most satisfying sound ever (a thick and solid "thump" because it's closing against a cloth-like keyboard cover, instead of aluminum ones from other laptops)

Alcantara is one of the finest luxury materials in existence. Used in lowly cars such as Mercedes Benz, Porsche, BMW, Lexus, Lamborghini. I have had it on several Surface products and it wears terrifically, has no odor at all (or it wouldn't be in those cars), and is almost stain-proof. If the Dell XPS products I am using lately had it instead of the carbon fiber I'd be fine with that. It's in such high demand for luxury cars that the maker is having to drastically increase production to keep up with demand.

As a former Windows touchscreen laptop user (just moved to the M1 MacBook Air 16/512 with the help your reviews from my trusty iPad Pro with magic keyboard2 setup), I really don't understand the excitement about touchscreen laptops. They get greasy and grubby incredibly quickly and watching the screen bounce back-and-forth when touched is incredibly annoying - especially if you're using pen input. iPads are built for touch and the screens are easier to clean (and the Pro's brightness means it tends not to really show finger marks anywhere near as much); the whole laptop form factor hobbles touch right out of the box, rendering it more affectation than effective user experience.

Did you not wonder what “Alcantara®” meant in the laptop’s description? Did you think it was a shade of Ice Blue? It’s not, it’s a synthetic fabric. Sit in a Lamborghini - they drown their interiors with it - and it’s gaudy. But my Shelby has it on the steering wheel and is divine. But if you don’t keep it clean, your body oils will make it slick like vinyl or leather. It’s a neat idea to put on a laptop - but I dunno if it’s practical.

I've owned surface products forever and the alcantara top is something that turns out to be a great addition! It does not get damaged at all. But I'm switching to mac still because windows has just gotten boring in a way😓

If a laptop has proprietary (charging) ports they'd better be magnetic, right?

  • @jgames4844
    @jgames4844 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Technically it is upgradable if you pry out the things on the bottoms to keep it from sliding around there are crews under them and it opens in a ver strange way, you pry the keyboard out and instead of looking at the internals with it close up side down you look at them where the keyboard would be. The ram and WiFi card are sauntered but the ssd is not. It isn’t your standard m.2 2280 like in the cos 15 and 17 or the razer blades. It is m.2 2230 eeitch are pretty hard to come by. Samsung doesn’t make any of 2230 drive. Western digital has the sn530 which is what’s in it by default and sell has a few and there are a couple from smaller companies.

And one thing I forgot to comment in your last video is I said that sk Hynix is name brand and the drive preinstalled in the g14 but if forgot to say that the one you showed is sata, that’s what would go in some desktop PCs.
