There was a time, when I was younger, when I would have mocked LARPing, DnD, and the like. A grown man shouldn't be playing make believe, I would have said.
And now, as an adult, I completely understand. It's a chance to escape from the awful mundane of our everyday lives, to live the life I think most of us secretly yearn for. The adventure and freedom of yesteryear, the chance to leave the desk and the computer behind, if even for a short while...it's the same reason people go hiking, camping, play videogames, or read fantasy books. And that physical freedom is only the beginning. Once you stop caring what people think, it's a freedom so complete that not much can bring you down.
I have the utmost respect (and more than a little jealousy) for you for doing your own thing and living your life exactly as you want to.

VINTHORIAN!!!!!!!! LOL! I didn't know you had a channel! This is AWESOME! This just randomly appeared in my feed. The title caught my eye, then I saw the Sharkalopes, then the close-cropped grey head, and I thought, "I know that guy!" You'll likely have no idea who I am, but we first met at the village of Scarborough. I approached you because I recognized the Sharkalopes, and complemented you on the dual-carry harness. (I had no idea that was Reggie's handiwork!) It was the first time I had seen ZT blades except on their website and TH-cam. Over the past few years, we've continued to run into each other at Scarborough and at New Market Village. The last time was in front of Reginald's shop this past November. You were helping with the giveaway, following the annual calendar shoot. Anyway, love the channel! Great videos! Here's wishing you much success with everything you put your hand to! I'll be sure to come say Hello if I spot you at Scarborough this spring, or perhaps at Sherwood, if you happen to ever visit there. Until then, safe travels!

They're some of the most overbuilt blades I've ever had the pleasure of using. Big Version 1.0 'Vakra' Kukri has cut down trees in my yard when an axe-shaft failed on me and I had an afternoon full of anger and aggression needed taken out on something not a person... and yard work, the yard work needed doing too, not just the anger issues.
They're big, they're thick, they're heavy, they're crowbars masquerading as blades and they're tougher than most nails. The acid wash finish wears off in an afternoon of heavy usage... the steel underneath? that doesn't. The leather wrap and some of the grips are not ideal for anyone without bullet proof callouses though.
The weight is a problem in some of the larger designs. My partner CANNOT use some of ZT's lineup effectively - and she isn't without her muscle - some designs are just built with someone much larger and with much more mass behind them in mind. if you are built like a tall mountain dwarf, have oversized hands, and know how to balance swinging pounds of steel, ZT's good for the money on most of their designs. I'm less for swords and more for axes anyhow, never had the pleasure of either of the sharks - but I've a mate with one and he says they're 'whippy'.

@@rkt1148 I have to agree that they are generally overbuilt. I have the Sharkalopes because they are the not like the other designs. They are fast and light. My wife has the Ginny. It's also based on a Filipino blade. So maybe that's why they are also lighter than most ZTs. But we also have a Scylis from ZT. It's a Persian style fighting knife. But it's very weighty. The baby sharks are far more agile a blade. I think there focus is more on being durable than anything else. I don't like the acid wash finish personally. I do think they They are quality blades. If you can find one that works for you. You can see in my morning training video these work for me. They're light and maneuverable. ⚔️

nice load out for a ranger on patrol expecting trouble.
I love the ranger concept. I Bushcraft with alot of 18th century style gear and see a fantasy Ranger as something like a Long Hunter...but with a bow rather then a flintlock.
I favor multipurpose items such as a tomahawk...or light hand axe ...and larger hunting knife. which double as tools and dual weapon combo.

I do like to have more than one purpose for most items in my kit. Weapons being the one exception. My short blades could double as the camp knife if necessary. The Sharkalopes are the lightest ZT blades. They were inspired by FMA. The balance is great. The overall weight is a bit more than I'd like. But the heavy handle is how they accomplish the great balance. I haven't yet found anything better. At least not for me.

@cortharynvinthorian4450 Thanks for the reply. I'm also practicing FMA and trying to find a good sword. Have you ever used a traditional Filipino sword such as ginunting, talibong or bolo which usually used for FMA? If yes how is Sharkalope compared to them? I'm aware that sharkalope is the lightest among ZT medium swords but close to 2 lbs seems a bit too heavy. I'm worried it'll mess up the wrists when twirling.

    • @cortharynvinthorian4450
      @cortharynvinthorian4450  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@mnyee1995 I like the talibong and the ginunting. I've never held a bolo. The talibong and the ginunting are lighter and have longer blades than the Sharkalopes.
The Sharkalopes however offered some protection for your hand. Not much protection for the hand. But still more than the more traditional blades. I really liked the Sandibar. But it was slightly too long for me to back draw.
The weight of the Sharkalopes doesn't affect my wrists. The handles are the heavy part. So there's not a lot of forward weight to cause wrist issues. My shoulders get fatigued before anything else. Lighter blades would definitely help with that.

Please explain the significance of drawing a 20 in sword vs longer.

    • @cortharynvinthorian4450
      @cortharynvinthorian4450  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

The difference for me is that my arms are not long enough to draw a sword longer than 20". Not with this set up anyway. At 21 inches the tip of the blade doesn't clear the end of the sheathe before my range of motion (arm length) ends. One could alter the sheath to allow for longer blade. However, I find it difficult to wield two longer blades. So the 20 inch blade length max is not an issue for me. My swords have a 17" blade. This works out well for me.

The "dress up" is medieval fantasy. It's just what I like. I do what I like. If you don't understand it. It's probably not for you. I like to dress the part of a medieval adventurer. (Think Lord of the Rings or DnD.) Then I attempt to adapt this to real world function. I'm not trying to teach anyone anything. I don't do LARP as there isn't any roleplaying. It's just my hobby. There are others who have the same hobby. Some just like to dress the part. Some go way further than I do. They don't carry any modern equipment and stay in the woods for days. @@richardhenry1969 I get it. It's fine that you don't get it. I think the difference in this and the reenactment thing is that I'm not doing it to help people understand anything. I'm doing it because I very much like the medieval fantasy realm so to speak. It's the closest thing to being in LoTR or the world of DnD I can ever get. I like bush craft and survival as well. So I incorporate those things into my hobby. The people who do the reenactments are passionate about the civil war. Their reenactments are how they express that. They could do the reenactments in modern clothes. But they don't. They play dress up. Because any aspect of it you can replicate makes the passion for the thing more rewarding.
There are many groups dedicated to this sort of thing. My group "The Rangers of Trails End" is very small six people currently. There's a Facebook page for the group. We are having a gathering this weekend.
There is a much larger group up North somewhere. They have something like 40 people. "Rangers of the wilds" they have a Facebook page.
there is a huge following on the "Rangers of Middle Earth" Facebook page. There are people in that group that are into all different variations of this hobby. Some just dress up. Some do the whole subversive Middle Earth Reenactment.
I personally don't follow any specific cannon. There are some though who follow the Middle Earth cannon pretty strictly. I first found this idea through Dungeons and Dragons. Then Lord of the Rings. I do very much like LoTR. But I'd say I follow more of a DnD/Pathfinder guideline. It's far more open to interpretation.
I started making videos because people would ask me the same questions a lot. The first and most common was " can you draw those swords from there". That's why I made the first video. More questions led to more videos.

Unless you use good momentum and foot work? Just swinging, flailing or thrust two weapons? It can cause you to get countered or even hit yourself. It takes good synchronization and plenty of training against someone fast and agile.

If you did use these tools out in the woods. The bow is fine. The camp knife is fine.
The Zombie tools are functional wall hangers. Get a good knife, compass, canteen, Water purification, Cooking system, rucksack, sleeping system, fire making system, and a hatchet.
Get out into the woods and actually learn to use these things. Being a scout, or a ranger and having the know how. Is practical to know about when you live in the country. For example looking for food on your property. Making money by selling antlers you have found. Making Charcoal for artists.
Last ditch the leather get up. Why? Leather does not protect you and it is too heavy for long distance hiking, It is not really water proof. It just is not breathable. It is very water resistant.
Do not carry a weapon like that on your back. The two long bladed knives "sharknados". The reason why is that they can get stuck on branches. If you want to carry a big knife for "fighting". We have plenty of knives to choose from.
You are also spending a lot of weight to carry around for something that will next to never happen. If you ever need to use Kali. You should have carried a gun.

Since doing this video. I have added the every single one of pieces of gear you mentioned. And ditched some things.
I spend every weekend in the woods under a tarp learning to use my gear. I should probably make some videos of that.
The Zombie Tools are quality steel. Just because you don't like them doesn't make them wall hangers. They are fully functional blades. You shouldn't bad mouth someone else's work because you want to sell yours. (That's how it looks)
I don't wear my leather jerkin in the woods trekking. That's mostly for Ren Faires and things like that.
I carry my sword on my back because they are out of the way and easily accessible. I have adjusted them low enough to not catch braches. Because that has in fact happened. It's the arrows in my quiver that sometimes snag braches now.
As for your gun thing. That doesn't fit. And your missing the point. This isn't modern bushcraft. I'm doing my thing. You do yours.

@@cortharynvinthorian4450 I like replying to each point so

This is all well and good. It would be nice to see.

I sell paintings and frames. This includes doing commissions. I have no intention of selling you a knife. Nor do I want to hurt your feelings. I am a knife guy. My current EDC is a federalist. Every working day. It gets used. Rarely it gets sharpened.

I think we both will. Good luck out there.

What the hell is going on here? Don't get me twisted. It's interesting to see a dude from. Lord of the rings and all but why? Ranger of what? Is this some kind of cosplay?

I'm doing what I like to do. I like camping, bushcraft basic survival training. And I like medieval/fantasy. I'm not cosplaying any character from anything. Cortharyn Vinthorian is my persona that I created. Ranger of Trails End. It's a group of like minded people who like the same things I mentioned above. I practice Pekiti-Tirsia Kali. Those are real swords. I practice archery. All the things I have and show are functional. It's not cosplay. I do it because I like it. Nothing more.
