    A roman gladius would be my go-to in a zombie apocalypse. Two feet long, sharp double edged Mainz-pattern blade that's perfect not just with the cut and thrust, but also useful in close quarters. It's similar to that Landsknect Messer you mentioned, but even better with the stabbity-stab.

      not real good at severing heads, which is canonically the only way to kill a zombie. Stabbing one has the effect of placing you within reach without actually doing a dmaned thing to the zombie.

    Matt, a simple machete. Rwanda civil war, 1991-2001, 1.3m deaths (this is the optimistic number), machetes were all over the place. It did resemble a zombie apocalypse. You couldn't make any noise, you didn't know if those over yonder were friend or foes, etc, sure some firearms were around, but the #1 weapon of choice, was the machete, something broke? You grab another one from the floor. The best tool is that one you can replace as quick as possible. I'm sure you're not going to wait 2 years for your Albion whatever replacement during the apocalypse, right? You can't beat a machete in speed, weight, cutting capability, ease of usage, and manufacturer's experience, after all it's a tool many people's livelyhoods depend on daily. Cheers!

    Top 5 melee weapons for the ZA?
    1. Short spear. Easy to use, light, somewhat ranged, low fatigue.
    2. Any stout cut centric shorter sword. Hangers, cutlass, gross messer, and the like. Easy to carry, handy around camp, chops arms and heads well.
    3. Something mace like. At its simplest something like a crowbar, think spiked native war club or ottoman war club, a mass with a spike 90 degrees to it. Any durable war hammer would fill this niche. Self evident, low skill, works well against armor, extremely durable, the right one might be handy at camp and or as an entry tool (think truckers buddy).
    4. A trident, but more in the form of a three prong pitchfork that's been straightened out flat and on a straight handle. Wide defense, hard to miss with, some stand off, low skill needed, potentially useful at camp/scavenging.
    5. A sambok, on the shorter side, with something like a half inch ball bearing on the tip. Very light, uses little power and favors a top down attack from outside grabbing range. Good for administratively dispatching inconvenient zeds, not so good for mobs or sudden close contact.

    There we go, grossmesser! Nearly indestructible by design, useful as a camp tool, lends itself well to untrained use. I'm surprised to not see a gladius, seems like just the thing.

    • @charlesparr1611
      @charlesparr1611 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The gladius is a short ranged stabbing weapon designed to be used in a highly trained shield wall. It has little mass, so it's not real good at smashing brains, nor is it any good at cutting, so you can't lop off things as needed. But the biggest part is the short range. Get a pole arm. Or at LEAST a big two handed sword, maybe a zweihander or as you say a grossmesser, but Im going to say maybe a partizan or a boar spear.

  • @leopeter9051
    @leopeter9051 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Honestly, I wouldn't pick a sword but rather some kind of polearm.
    My favourite is the 'Fußstreithammer', basically a spiked warhammer on a 6ft pole.
    Or a poleaxe.
    Those need no maintenance, other than replacing the handle, if you abuse it too much, and they'd cave in zombie skulls like watermelons.

    The Messer is a very good choice. I have the Cold Steel Grosse Messer. Single edged. It has a nice thick spine. So if some one is wearing a helmet, you whack then with the blunt side. I'd also look into a saber or a cutlass. Good heavy blades, good hand protection. Plus you can use a make shift shield in your off hand. Yes as some one else pointed out a Gladius would be very good. But they can be a bit short. I think I've seen them with about a 18 inch blade. But then again, you can use a shield in your off hand. My tool of choice would be the Cold Steel Pole Axe. Axe on one side, hammer on the other, and it has decent reach. Stabbing would be bad, that is how blades get stuck. Whack their head off. Or chop off a leg, and they are pretty much out of the fight. Stick and move, Stick and move. Interesting idea though, for a video.

    @Kratos_God_of_50_BMG ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I'm 100% sticking with the Cloudhammer for awesome strength and edge retention, but a solidly made dadao would be really effective in CQB situations where the Albion would be useless. Plus I also have lots of guns if all else fails. Hope the elbow's feeling better!

    • @-Zevin-
      @-Zevin- ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dadao are super underrated, but, since we are talking about a fantasy zombie scenario, I do feel like thrusting would be more useful than chopping. Zombies in pop culture are slow, don't dodge, with something like a small sword or a rapier to keep more distance you could dispatch a hundred without tiring yourself out. That plus a full plate harness and you would be a zombie killing machine impervious to bites lol.
      I always wanted a character in a show like the walking dead that wore a full medieval set of plate armor, like a re-enactor from a renaissance festival that survived the apocalypse and went a little insane in the process alone in armor, staying in character. I imagine a opening shot of a bunch of zombies swarmed around apparently feeding on a body, only for the camera to reveal the armored man, taking a nap.

    • @Kratos_God_of_50_BMG
      @Kratos_God_of_50_BMG ปีที่แล้ว

      @@-Zevin- I get what you're saying about a distance weapon, like a rapier, but if you were swarmed, as zombies love to do, the long blade would get trapped up in it. Thats why i like the shorter, *much* thicker blades for CQC. I think the plate armor is a great idea, unless zombie bites act like can openers lol I think even a full suit of chain mail might work, but I'd use that huge padded suit that the Sheriffs Dept K-9 unit uses to train their dogs how to take a man down, and keep him there. If those padded suits can protect you from crazy dog bites, then I'm pretty sure it'd keep slobbering zombie bites of you too!

    • @-Zevin-
      @-Zevin- ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kratos_God_of_50_BMG Let's be real there is a 0% chance a bite will ever get through plate armor, 0. Teeth are far far softer and more brittle than metal. Fabric on the other hand tears and wears down, you are going to be better off with metal armor every time, on top of that plate armor is pretty much always worn with padding underneath too. The only way a zombie is biting through plate armor is if they had the bite strength of a 1,000lb saltwater crocodile and titanium metal teeth lol.
      As far as getting swarmed yeah, I can see a rapier not being ideal, so ideally you would have something like a gladius as a backup weapon on a belt. Or a offhand dagger would do very well too! Rapier and dagger was a popular historical combo, dagger for close in and a quick thrust to the head is all it takes on a zombie, perfect with a light fast dagger. Got another combo you might like more too, Spada da lato, similar to a rapier but more of a arming sword cut and thrust style blade, can still thrust well, but is a much better cutter than a rapier, pair that with a left hand dagger, and you have a wicked combo for longer range and close in.
      Still seems like a bad idea to start with a close quarters weapon, the further away from someone trying to bite you the better, imagine that in real life for a moment, you want to stay as far back as possible, this is even more true if you don't have armor. You could make a similar argument for a spear, + a short ranged backup weapon. If you want to keep it Chinese a spear + a liuyedao sword could be a brilliant combo, spear to keep distance, and the liuyedao for close range getting swarmed or going inside a building. liuyedao is still a great cutting saber, but also gives you a bit more flexibility for thrusting too, while being quick. Still you could probably make a dadao work as a secondary carried on the belt, they aren't too heavy, but I deff would still want something longer and more thrust centric as a primary weapon.

    All swords are going to do fairly well, I have a 20" Bowie knife and a shield at the moment, as I was looking for that one other weapon and decided on a long sword around the 36-inch mark for blade length and perhaps 9-ish inching handle was thinking of various encounters, I'm old easier is better - the right tool for the right job. Let's say - scenarios having to reach over and poke out the passage from the driver's side, or into the back seat, under the vehicle, there could be that one that requires you to crawl under and get it, but if you can do it from a range. I have a JR cross-pound bow as well. The niche is the face thrusting into the skull, since I'm old I'm not looking at Spartan 300 stuff, those days are long gone. Learn to pick and choose your battles, is all I'm saying, and have your timing and windows aligned up. Frying pan to frying pan is a young man's game, You are in a Zombie Apocalypse what is the rush now, especially when it's a wait-and-see type zombie affair, mutations, breeds, etc. Could be a thing or not, as the days go on it might and could get easier as to the entropy of rot, or not. More than likely if you are reading this your survival is already favored, as you are not walking around with horse blinders on, as some try to think of a DIY weapon after 3 days of just coming to the new terms of survival, never mind how to adventure outside with the Undead, For helmet zombies it might be easier just to trip them, by a few graceful place cuts like at the back of the knees, and hold them down while buddy removes the helmet or finds a way in, for the quick easy. Being this prepared allows one to make a circumference bubble of math to exist for a while, until better could be had or perhaps rescue a few peeps out there.

    my personal choice would be a toss up between my cold steel bastard sword, my civil war saber, and my black german bastard sword,
    1 - The Saber would probably require some edge upkeep more than the other two, but it''s super light and REALLY easy to handle, not to mention it has a hand guard, so harder to take, or bite the hand, also gives room for a shield, i'd recommend a small shield, like a buckler in these situations, but that's me.
    2 - As for my Cold Steel Bastard Sword, I've used that cold steel bas. sword for near five to ten years now, can't remember specifically, I've cut with it probably monthly, give or take, i know i put it through hell when i first got it, for the first two weeks, daily, didn't' have much anything else to do back then, no job etc, but it's held up, the guard is a bit loose, but it's sturdy and nothing some glue wouldn't fix in a SHTF situation, it's also super light and cuts like butter, could also shield with it.
    3 - The Black German Bastard Sword, this sword is not by any specific company, i have NO IDEA, where i got it from, i cannot remember, but if you just google black german bas. sword, you'll find it, it is very solid, now I've not cut with it as it has no edge to speak of, i should send it off to be sharpened at some point, it has a ring hilt guard with knobs at the ends of the cross guard, and a scent stopper pommel, with it is a bit hefty though, hence being number 3 on the list, you COULD shield with it, i would recommend a shield any day personally, just extra protection, but in this case i'd strap it to my arm so i could still two hand it if necessary.

    As someone who's not much of a katana fan, I'll be the first to admit that it would be a good choice of blade for a zombie apocalypse. It would certainly be better than a smallsword, and I like smallswords! Katana are very cutty/choppy, and cutty/choppy is what you want as opposed to pointy/stabby. Anything with a thin blade that needs constant sharpening and maintenance is going to be a bad pick. I would much rather have some sort of hooked axe, which could be various sizes depending what you want. The weight alone would do damage with a dull blade. The hook could be useful in and out of combat, as well as the axe, itself.
    If it's in a wood handle you could find a replacement *somewhat* easily, depending where you are. With a metal handle, all the better. I would have it hollowed out in the handle to store stuff. You put a spike on the top if you need to puncture and heck, it's an awl, if you need one. You wrap the handle in something that you could potentially unwrap and use in an emergency. The other end of the axe blade could be another spike or a hammer ( I'd go with hammer). That's the way to go right there.
    Sorry, I know you're doing swords here. I think most swords are gonna be a bad idea.

    It would be something that could be constructed and maintained relatively easily with parts being pretty common. A kitchen knife attached to a pole would probably be my go to. Sword length is still too close for comfort. I'd want the zombie at pole lengths away.

    It's nice to know if you have a sword that isn't going to bend or break. I took what was supposed to be a decent Katana, and the blade bent slicing through a 3 inch limb.

    Okay, as for a katana, or a wakizashi, look into what are called Tactical. Modern made, full tang, handle scales more like a knife. Nothing to come loose or rattle. I have a Tactical Wakizashi, and Katana, both very well made. As for sharpening, a good mil file and some diamond stones. Its not rocket science. Technically the Messer is not a sword, it is a Knife, since Messer is the German word for knife. I know have a Gustav Messer with a 18 inch long blade and same kind of guard and nagel/nail guard. A very good choice.

    If my sword rattles in the apocalypse to the point it's a liability I am going to squirt silicone caulk or instant gasket into the works until it quiets down. Wood glue also comes to mind. I'll beat a hammer set wedge in it if I have to. I also wouldn't be too sure about not facing other humans with various melee weapons, I'd argue that it's inevitable that you will do so, unless you have ranged weapons and rely on them for human to human combat.

    I had a long think on this subject one day when the power was out at our campground and was 🌧️ but I digress I was thinking of a realistic loadout to protect yourself or maybe you and a child here what I landed on 1. An assault rifle you can rely on my pick is the AR-15 platform with a binary/or f.r.t. trigger as you can switch it to more shots more quickly then normal also it be in a short platform 7.5" barrel to 12" barrel with a long barrel upper (lightweight) in your pack with multiple mags with various types of round in different clips for different types of issues... 2. A side arm pistol preferably 9-10 mm with a few mags 3. A broadsword/ leaf shaped knife of 14-24 inch blade robust and sturdy for chopping, cutting, hacking, slashing, or used like a sword if needed my thoughts were the Kershaw camp 12, or 18 thick enough to do damage without breaking but light enough to have strapped to your side all day... (My idea is like military style vest pistol attached outside chest with 4. A knife maybe 2 or 3 light sturdy knives on you (cold steel kobun light but sturdy) on chest as well Kershaw camp blade on side facing forward blade edge out so to quickly counter attack in reverse grip then 5. a good light (fast and nimble) katana that's tough still maybe one that tapers quickly towards tip to ensure lightweight and speed (attached to your back) mind you this is not for long trip engagement short to moderate distances until you find suitable camp/living zone so you can alternate what is needed for each outdoor deployment from your now found home base (let me know what u all think)

    I don't mean to be antagonistic, but swords would be very disadvantageous against zombies. I'm not an expert, that can show his certifications in the field of zombie extermination, but the most recomendable tools for survival would be a good camping hatchet or tomahawk that combines axe on one side and hammer on the other, and a good utilitarian knife. Tools that one could use for both set up and tear down a barricade, and that can deal with breaking bones in bulk. And like I said, I'm not a verifiable expert, you don't have to believe anything I say, but if zombies turned out to start showing up around, you may be able to get way further into the apocalypse after picking up some impact tool with cutting capabilities, than any modern made katana.

    Try 12 in to 15 in machete, eg Cold steel or Condors. The logic behind this is "IF" swords requirements of cutting heads body parts then machete were designed to cut tough woods and vegetation. A 20 odd bucks machetes is better then high prized heavy maintenance sword. Also there's nothing like a 9mm glock for killing any zombie or any other dangers. Try 10mm if you want higher power. ☝️😎

    Many saying that swords would not be practical in a zombie apocalypse yet they somehow think that guns, wood axes or machetes are somehow better: 1) Guns run out of ammo which would be much harder to find, and they still require lots of maintenance to work properly. 2) Wood axes or hatches would be fine for general utility, but would be too cumbersome to use in fending off zombies. 3) Machetes are marginally better because they can be used for general utility and would not be very tiresome for defence, but they have less reach which would make them riskier to use against zombies and they're not really exempt from requiring maintenance all the same; swords are perfectly usable in a "survival" scenario, can be strong enough for utility and are light enough to use for longer without getting tired than most other options...

    If you're gonna hack zed in the apocalypse you're going to hit a lot of metal. Helmets, orthodontal implants, jewelry, zippers, weapons, ammunition, other melee weapons, surgical implants and even outright metal worn as armor along with tools, utensils, batteries, keys etc... If it doesn't won't easily go through a license plate without taking damage, it's no good in the ZA.
