Thank you, Mr. Ballen, for the retelling of my dad's story. His 6 hours in hell mission is unbelievable and one he didn't like to relive, but he told it in hopes of inspiring those who heard it. He never took credit for being a hero, although in all of our eyes he is one. He always said the real heroes are the ones who never came home. By the way, our family just celebrated the 40th Anniversary of my father receiving the Medal of Honor.
Again, well done Mr. Ballen. -Yvette Benavidez Garcia, Roy's proud daughter. #TangoMikeMike
Thanks to your dad for his service.
Your dads a hero
Yes a super hero. 💪
Ma’am, I’ve heard your dad’s story before, and am amazed and inspired by him each time. I wish I was half the man he was on his worst day.
I’ve heard your dad’s story many times. I can only imagine the internal strength of mind required to overcome the overwhelming physical trauma he endured and to keep fighting to save others. His story should never be forgotten. I’ve shared your father’s story with my children and hopefully they will share it with their own kids someday. I like to tell my kids that life will knock you down a million different ways, it’s your job to find a million and one ways to get back up. Inspired by your Dad. Thank you

This dude was like I will not die to anyone until I save my comrades.
it's very possible that the damage he sustained in combat caused some of the complications. he did get shot and stabbed several times in the abdomen. that damage to the stomach, liver, etc. could have possibly made it more difficult for his body to manage sugars and produce/secrete insulin. i don't know his dieting and lifestyle, just saying it is possible

When doing their laundry, my gramma noticed something sewn into their clothes. Was gold, which she saved fpr their college which they all went to and were super successful. Top tier warzone parenting, IMO.
Last i heard hes still alive, in Seattle.
*cues in* Resident EVIL… reincarnation lol

That's honestly adorable--
The part with the kids I mean.
This is the most amazing and almost imposible story i have ever heard😢 how brave he is.. my grandfather who is a world war 2 veteran has told me lots of stories when i was young.. and they are all amaze me and makes me just do nothing but to listen to the story.. my son who now 14 has learn a lot about history.. i will never forget about this story never.. salute 🎖
Can I make mention the fact that he did all of this after suffering a spinal injury that medical staff said would leave him a paraplegic. He spent six months teaching himself how to walk again, managed to train hard enough to apply and get into the green berets. That man lived off of nothing but sheer willpower and tenacity.
When the medical staff don't even know where to begin surgery due to the dozens of wounds and he still survived. Damn. He earned those medals.
thanks i must’ve skipped over that part
🤘🇺🇸 facts. Like he is the example of an American hero pure genuine willpower
We've just listened to the same story as you, halfwit. Tell us something we don't already know...
This guy is a legend. Shame he's not more well known considering how incredible his story is.
This man is more well known then you think there are very few moh recipients us vets don't know. It is breed into most of us in basic training. And other courses that we take over the course of our careers no matter how long or short they are
Facts!!
They should have a little mini video documentary teaching his story to all kids in bootcamp for all of the Armed Forces.
There is always one. One person who says screw the odds, screw what is considered impossible, or suicide, and just does it. This man is one of those people.
he didn't say screw the odds to sugar though :(
Sounds like a dude I could hang out with.
@@FussyPickles 😂
It shows how powerful the human mind actually is. This man believed he was invincible in battle and he was.
Sounds like the punisher 😅
1 of the most unbelievable stories ever told
I knew Roy, I'm from south Texas and although I was Air Force, I spent a great deal of time recovering at Brooke Army Medical Center, which is where we met. He was an amazing guy, who deserved a lot more than the 63 years he got, but he surely made the most out of them. He was an inspiration to everyone who met him. He is missed.
hopefully they didn't break the mold after making him.
I didn’t know him, but I can tell from what is told, he is a true hero!!
Why were you a patient at Brooke, Preacher? (If you don't mind my asking.)
@@stephen1137 I waited a little too long to give a plane back to the taxpayers
Thank you for your service. My brother was in country 2 tours. What a wonderful man Roy sounds to have been, and the fact he was 32 and not in his late teens or early 20's like so many young men in that war, is another testimony to his strength and grit! Awe inspiring.
Big ups to the pilot for being the real loyal friend during the time of battle
True that
Fr, probably just left and prayed this unarmed dude could do literally anything at all to begin with lol
Absolutely. He put everything he had on the line for his brothers. That’s integrity and true bravery.
Idkkkkkkk, I still think the real hero was Roy. Not to say the pilot wasn’t incredibly brave and loyal, it’s just if there’s only one “the real hero” of this story, I’d say it’s Roy. The pilot died after one blow, Roy kept going after 37 and a body bag.
Oh and the pilot put himself in the line of fire, sure. He also, retreated to wait for a signal and then put himself in line of fire once more. Roy threw himself out of the helicopter, no parachute, INTO the fire and then continued running directly into the fire, over and over again.
That man is no hero, that man is a legend, a legend of legends, the man who overcame death with sheer will.
"Heroes get remembered; legends never die."
Truth
Hey sorry for the self-promotion but I would appreciate it if you could check out my most recent montage and maybe give a little positive feedback. thanks!🖤
Best story I have ever heard. So glad me and the ol man stumbled in on this. Allen it the best story teller.!!!
Is anyone else watching this with their jaw on the ground, tears in their eyes, and an extreme amount of admiration and amazement? Never in my life have I felt like such a pansy. That is one hell of a man.
☝🏼❤ yessssss
Yes. I was thinking as I was listening that if this were a movie, people would walk out on it, saying it was just too ridiculously unrealistic. Stunning bravery and selflessness.
@@gibsongirl2100 I immediately ran to my husband and made him stop what he was doing, and listen to this story. He had the same reaction we did.
Pure love, respect, admiration, and amazement. This is the best story I have ever heard from Mr. Ballen.
This man's story really needs to be told again and again.
That is one great BS story

This guy was an actual beast. God truly blessed him that day.
His determination, courage, loyalty and strong mindset are qualities only a few people get to have.

My father was a marine He served 3 tours in Vietnam He was shot 3 times stabbed twice and survived the war God bless all the hero's that gave their lives and risked their lives in that terrible war
Is your dad still alive ?
Heck yes I liked it! How could you not be inspired by the story? We have forgotten who we are. God bless America and God bless any man or woman that will run into danger to save another person. 👍
This wasn’t strange, dark OR mysterious...this was downright impressive
It is! The Vietnam jungle is dark, strange and mysterious
yep your right
more mysterious
I don't know about that, it's pretty strange
Nay. It was OUTSTANDING. Should have received the MOH to begin with, no hesitation. If we had an division of men like him, we'd need no other army.
While definitely a hero, he understood (as all of us who served do), that the true heroes were people like the helicopter pilot (who remains unnamed) who gave his life retuning to a hopeless situation. That helicopter pilot deserves no less recognition, and MSGT Benavidez honorably expressed his acknowledgement of this. I salute people like this who understand honor and courage, and represent the true strength of this nation.
That was amazing, I'm moved to tears. I'm Australian but I feel like a patriotic American all of the sudden
Do ya? Really?
Well fellow Commonwealth citizen I think I share your sentiments here in Canada. Allies of the US except those two spats hundreds of years ago.

Because there is no one big enough or bad enough to play this hero!

@@mimidavis2686 I can see Liam neeson playing him. I agree, they can’t just cast any-ol’-body.

There’s a giant cargo ship the army uses called the benevidez.
Amazing. This is the kind of grit and determination that this country was built on. Much respect to that man.

No need that man was dead the second that rifle hit Roy
