Hey guys, how's it going? Chris Connor here and welcome to another episode of filmmaker reacts for my channel. Seat back, relax and lets study the filmmaking techniques as well as talk about what visual effects can be pulled of within after effects! This week we are reacting and taking a look at two OVERWATCH HERO short film cinematic!

Answering your question, all these cinematics happen when Overwatch had been already shut down. So Tracer, Winston (gorilla scientist), McCree they used to be Overwatch agents, but not anymore. Overwatch saved the world in the war with omnics decades ago then became kind of international military/scientific organization. Soldier76 were strike commander of the Overwatch. Then everything went down, there were some shady things inside Overwatch which all led to massive backlash and the UN decided to close Overwatch and claim all agent activities illegal. Tracer now retired in London where she trying to do some good herself. Other agents doing their stuff: healing, inventing, participating in transnational terroristic organizations etc.

Jack Morrison was the Strike commander of Overwatch but once the shit hit the fan and the Overwatch HQ blew up he was presumed dead... some time later a vigilante known only as soldier seventy six started to hunt down those suspected of Overwatches downfall...
Also, "Soldier 76" was his code name in the Super Soldier program (Gabriel aka Reaper was the "Soldier 24")

There is a total of 10 shorts before Zero Hour: Recall ✔, Alive ✔, Dragons ✔, The Last Bastion ✔, Infiltration ✔, Honor And Glory ✔, Shooting Star ✔, HERO ✔ - you are watching now, and I think you are missing Rise And Shine for sure, and I can't find you watching Reunion as well. Reunion was the latest one before Zero Hour and it is referenced so watch it for sure. I might have just missed that video though, but I can't find it on your channel either.

Bit of lore for you the reason he doesnt say hes a hero anymore is because the overwatch orginization was disbanded. He had to fake his own death because he was the leader and everyone thought overwatch was bad. They were going to kill him. He said old habits die hard because he still works in the shadows as a vigilante. Thats what the recall animation was, it was winston calling the group back together.
More so everyone assumes he's dead. The apex of the infighting led to either a self imposed destruction or an accidental one of the Swiss HQ. Leaving both Jack and Reyes seemingly for dead.

@@goldieholdie6317 yea but the explosion of the swiss HQ is what broke the camels back and gave Petras EXACTLY what he needed to get his accords signed into order.

He didn't go advertising he was alive though. No one really faked there Death in Overwatch. They just let others think they were dead

when this short came out, the first thing that caught my attention, was Alejandra "descending into the darkness"
the way she goes from that street and it's colors, to the alley and it's darkness, and how 76 literally "brings her back" and then he goes deeper in.
If you didn’t notice, the man pictured most prominently on the poster *is* Jack Morrison/S76 before he became a vigilante. Alejandra’s mother is a member of the “Overwatch generation,” when Overwatch was the revered group of heroes depicted in the poster. Alejandra herself only knows the world from after Overwatch’s collapse, so she can’t bring herself to believe in those kinds of heroes... until she sees one for herself.
I love how he is "who's the mom" thinking Alejandra is secretly soldiers daughter or something and then soldier Is gay LMAO

i hope you react to some overwatch origin stories like the Doomfist one( this on is made like an anime unlike the others). they are pretty nice, you get to know the characters a bit better, short (so maybe 2-3 per episode) and more characters.
Good call, also maybe the Overwatch Archives ones like retribution.
Hey I’m sorry honestly I love seeing you react to overwatch animations but this new change really changes things, this sounds different and the screen isn’t as big as what it used to be, unlike your other videos the sound well sounds like it’s from the video... this one sounds like your recording it on your phone. Rise and Shine is definitely my favorite. It's kind of a tie with Dragons and The Last Bastion, I hope you don't skip it, it's really good.

Um. We need to talk about a couple of things here, dude. I promise I'm writing this for your own good. 😄 Your random comments while watching the cinematic are sometimes a bit cringe. Like the ones, when you read random words you see on screen or make anticipating explosion sounds that sometimes don't even happen. :D I'm not trying to make you feel uncomfy here, besides it's just my observation. Story-wise, I forgave you already that you completely ignored the OW timeline and are watching these cinematics in a random order; but please, watch all of them before Zero Hour. I also recommend for your finale to watch Story so far and Zero Hour in one video. Story so far will make you understand a lot about OW in general. Over and out
13:00 - because overwatch corporation was shutdow by the UN by the "Petra's Act", you can see that in the recall cinematic, when athena pointed that overwatch activity is illegal.
so this cinematic is actually in the present of the lore, and all we've seen about the overwatch heroes are actually in the past of the lore
do not miss "rise and shine" before see "zero hour" is an important cinematic and well you also forget the launch trailer of overwatch 1
It adds nothing to the story so it's ok but Rise and Shine on the other hand... No one should miss it

I think important things to note that you didn't seem to cover: 1. The thug refers to her by a nickname for her first name, so it's likely they know each other on some level. This is important to me because it explains why she's not quite so afraid of him and ends up chasing after - even though he's clearly a bad egg, it's likely they've known each other for years, so she likely sees him more like someone sees a school bully, rather than a dangerous criminal (even though he's actually the latter). 2. Soldier's expressions through his eyebrows. When the girl looks at him with hope in her eyes right after she realizes he did this for her (when he throws her her purse), it's as if it hurts him. It's like his heart opens up for a brief second, then he hardens it. He doesn't like it. He has to look away. This makes more sense knowing his backstory, with him thinking he's failed everyone and he doesn't want people to look up to him like that anymore, because he's afraid his failures will get them killed, like so many people in the past.
Informative and fun as usual!
For the setup, I much prefer the old setup as it shows the screen more and more relaxing to look at with the plant
For the overwatch stuff, overwatch was banned by the world government after the omnics(sentient robots) went down the first time and is deemed dangerous in that time
For Soldier 76, he was Jack Morisson, the former leader of Overwatch before he got betrayed by Reyes(Reaper)
The betrayal of Blackwatch(basically special ops of Overwatch which is lead by Reaper before he goes all angsty) is what makes overwatch got banned and put down by the world government

They talk about Overwatch like that because Overwatch is no more, the people disbanded Overwatch as they said they were dangerous and bringing more danger than removing it, that why with the Winston cinematic you see him calling all Overwatch members to bring Overwatchback. Overwatch hero takes plays before the Winston Cinematic
Still need to do the original OW Cinematic trailer and Rise and Shine. Even if you just scan them they cover pieces you've been missing. You need to see them before OW2.
Alejandra's mother is IIRC related to Sombra or at least I remember the comics where finding her helps locating Sombra. Been a while, though.
Ok here's his story( i just grabbed key points from it. Fully story here (overwatch.gamepedia.com/Soldier:_76#Story). Warning in advance: Pretty long, got it from Overwatch Wiki
At eighteen, at the earliest opportunity, Morrison(young soldier 76, also the blonde guy in the poster the girl took down) packed his bags and joined the military in response to the Omnic Crisis breaking out across America.
Morrison and his fellow augmented soldiers would soon put their abilities to use as the United States was devastated by the conflict. As governments tried and failed to neutralize the omnics, the United Nations was busy forming an international task force called Overwatch. This small, experimental group would bring together the best and brightest from around the world to wage asymmetrical warfare against the robots. Overwatch's short list of prospective agents included two members of the soldier enhancement program: Morrison and Gabriel Reyes, a senior officer from Los Angeles. Reyes(Black robed guy called Reaper) and Morrison became fast friends, despite their different backgrounds, and decided to join Overwatch together.
One of their operations was carried out in Rio de Janeiro. In the end, Overwatch found the strength to defeat the omnics and end the war.
The UN rewarded Morrison for his contributions by making him Overwatch's first official commander. Reyes, to his relief, was passed over in the process. Morrison told Reyes that he should have been strike commander instead, but regardless, Morrison retained the position.
Reyes gets a different commanding position for the covert ops division of Overwatch which they called Blackwatch. Everyone in Overwatch knows Blackwatch exists but no one outside (public, government etc.) knows they exist. Blackwatch consists of Reyes, Genji, McCree and Moira.
An Italian businessman called Antonio coordinates a bombing of one of the Overwatch bases so the Blackwatch team gets sent over to take Antonio into custody for interrogation. But Reyes is angry about what Antonio did so instead of taking him into custody he kills him, the alarm of Antonio's base goes off and they have to fight their way out. This is the first time anyone hears of Blackwatch and they go public and give Overwatch a bad reputation.
After a while Morrison and Reyes have a fight at the main Overwatch base in Switzerland that causes the whole base to explode and be destroyed. Everyone thinks they died but they are still alive. Reyes wants to kill every Overwatch member that is still alive after it was disbanded while Morrison is hunting down every one that contributed to Overwatch being taken down.
There's the main points of Soldier 76 story.

Hi, I wanted to suggest an animation thats the mos advanced and well done animation i've ever seen its called ASTARTES and its like 5 videos and u can put them all in one video because they are very short but i really recomend it because ir all done for only one persona and its fuking amazing
If you wanted, you could watch the character videos/origin stories of overwatch some are good and sigma’s is really dope. They are in a different animation style but again are still good in my opinion.

24:03 is a really cool scene to me because Soldier stops walking and the number 76 on his back is in the middle of light and shadow, she asked him if he is one of "those heroes", which would be the light of his image, but once he says he isn't anymore the number is now covered in darkness... It's a nice touch :)

overwatch was a super hero team more or less that got shut down and are now slowly getting back together thru the winston cinematic
You should see the Origin videos of the overwatch characters. Gives a little bit of history and lore about them.

To clarify why the soldier is so fast and strong in the lore is explained that he is some kind of super soldier just like captain america the government did some kind of experiments with him (and apperently other soldiers)

Overwatch was disbanded after some shady stuff from their black ops team, blackwatch, became public. Soldier 76 was commander Morrison, leader of overwatch, he disbanded and became a vigilante after overwatch activities were disbanded. Winston's cinematic was him trying to get the overwatch crew back together even though it was ilegal, he believed the world needed them so that's when the present is, when overwatch is reuniting.
The granade scene wouldn't be possible but it's not really that improbable because soldier 76 is basically captain america, he's a super soldier from an experiment.
Also, you're missing Rise and Shine, wich is a very sad video

Soldier 76's real name is Jack Morrison. He has enhanced abilities (increased strength, agility, speed) because he was part of a "Soldier Enhancement Program" that is basically like the Super Soldier program Captain America went through in Marvel Comics. Anyway, Jack was the leader of Overwatch. He's actually the blonde guy in the "los protectores" poster that Alejandra looks at in the beginning and takes with her at the end. Global drama and politics led to Overwatch being declared illegal and disbanded a long time ago. That's why Alejandra's mom talks about them like they're in the past. This is also why in the "Recall" cinematic, Winston was hesitant to put out the call to get Overwatch together again (because they're illegal now).
After the fall of Overwatch, Jack Morrison was thought to have died in an explosion in one Overwatch base. But he survived. He took up the name "Soldier:76" and is now doing vigilante work. To me it seems like during Overwatch's prime, Jack was portrayed as a very super hero-like "good guy" type of character. Very much a captain america type character, he was the face of Overwatch (just look at the poster lol). But after having gone through all that crap and almost dying, he changed. It made him "angsty", like you described. This cinematic puts a big emphasis on that. It really highlights how much angrier he is and how much more violently he fights. Even though he's still on a mission for justice, he no longer sees himself as a good guy. He's now a vengeful spirit, who's willing to go to extreme lengths to achieve his goals. Which is why when Alejandra asks him, "You're one of those heroes, aren't you?", he responds with "Not anymore".
Despite all that though, Jack can't help but BE a hero - at least to Alejandra. He has a fixation on eradicating the "Los Muertos" gang that he fights in this cinematic, but when faced with the choice between giving pursuit to the gang members or saving the life of the girl, he chose to save the girl. And at the end, we see him not only watching over the city, but watching over Alejandra, specifically. He was there to make sure she got home safe, and it suggests that he had been watching over her longer than that because somehow he knew that Los Muertos stole her money and made it a point to return it to her, at the cost of putting the fight against the gang - the mission - on hold.

Literally search TH-cam for "Overwatch cinematic trailer". It's a short like all of these. It takes place after Overwatch was re-formed. It stars Winston (Gorilla) Tracer, Reaper, and Widowmaker.
You also have "Junkertown: The Plan", which is about the Australian duo Junkrat, and Roadhog. It's a comedy short. Funny, but not much action. I really think you should react to these before doing the Overwatch 2 cinematic trailer. Finish the first game first.
You forgot Rise and Shine too lol which is way important than these two

22:00 could this be somewhat fixed by adding a second or so of black screen and silence? Like
1) girl screams + riser sound effect
2) cut to black and silence for half a second to a second
3) cut to the explosion (maybe same shot of explosion even)
Basically add tension and make timing feel more believable. At least the way it's playing in my head seems to work.
Just realized, sound-wise my idea would be similar to the scene from the Wolverine stand alone movie where the nuke goes off and logan saves the guy who would become the antagonistic from dying. Probably cut into a more traditional explosion sound effect though, a simple grenade would not make sense for that immense of a sound.

Every time I see this, I remember Dafran's Hero cinematic. (Dafran is the best OW 76 aimbot)
Honestly, I mainly watch these because of how excited you get at these like I do. Your analysis is just a bonus.
Would suggest watching "Warbringer: Sylvanas" from the Warcraft Universe. Not much to visually explain, however it does give you insight into the dead elf lady, and explains the start of the series you've already watched.
Also, would like to see you do "World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor" cinematic. It's pretty epic.

DON’T FORGET RISE AND SHINE PLEASE
IMPORTANT BEFORE YOU WATCH ZERO HOUR: Regarding the poster sounding like it's in the past, since I don't see anyone actually answering it. If you watch the "Overwatch Cinematic Trailer" it'll tell you, but extreme sparknotes (it's mentioned in the Recall trailer) is that Overwatch was an organization formed to fight the Omnics during the Omnic war that we see in Bastion's flashback. Soldier:76 here was the former commander of the organization (Commander Morrison). However, after the Omnics were defeated, Overwatch didn't go away- they stayed around like a supercharged Interpol, righting wrongs across the world. But they had some internal strife, and a lot of the "darker" operations done by a branch of Overwatch called "Blackwatch" (led by Gabriel Reyes aka Reaper) ended up (intentionally, most likely) creating a lot of bad press for the organization- this led to something called the "PETRAS Act" that's referenced in the Recall trailer, that makes it illegal for any of the former Overwatch agents to operate anywhere in a heroic capacity. That's why they speak like the heroes are in the past, and it's also why security in the Widow/Tracer trailer acts like Tracer is some random rogue agent- she actually is!
The Long Awaited Zero Hour Is Almost Here
13:00 because overwatch was group that save the world in the 2060 from the omnic and the game and the cinematic are collocate 10/20 years late than the war of the omnic...and the overwatch "group" fell after internal strife shortly after the war ended

9th or 10th time requesting this. But I know Destiny is not known for its Cinematics but I truly think that the "Last Stand of the Gunslinger" and "House of Wolves" trailer are truly amazing Cinematics and would love to see you react to them.
Nice reaction! But there is still one animated vedio called Rise And Shine before Zero Hour, which is my favorate, and it's also important to the last vedio. I'm not going to spoil, so just finish them!
