Arief Alfatih Spain was too good in 2010. But their short passing tactics did not work in 2014.. opponents always find a way out. Plus the good players had aged, that slowed them down too. Same happened with Germany this WC, they had slowed down considerably.

And that dutch team of 2014 had a very old attack, Robben and Van persie were both 30 and we both know they were on the decline (even though Robben still had another season or two of peak ability left). Your midfield was mediocre at best. And that tank? defence was nothing, you guys just played counter attack football with as many bodies behind the ball. That doesn't mean you had someone like puyol in defence that could lead or make good calls without any mistakes. 98 dutch team would've raped that 14 team 10-0.

The Joker: Problem is that Van Gaal had a very good team with Van Persie, Robben, Sneijder, De Jong etc. now those players are either retired or not as good as they used to be. The best player in the team now is Depay and that shows why Netherlands couldn't even make it to the World Cup losing to a team like Bulgaria. Robben was the Netherlands' top scorer in the qualifiers with 6 goals closest was Depay with 3 goals and now Robben has retired. And although I see a few promising youngsters coming through in Dutch football such as de Ligt and Justin Kluivert there just isn't much of these talents, the future doesn't look too bright for the Dutch national team. Ronald Koeman was great at Southampton but his Everton job was very poor eventually getting fired. So not sure how it's going to turn out for Netherlands.

I still remember the day we were watching this match. me and my dad were watching, my mum didnt have any faith so she stayed in bed. After a while she came to see where all the shouting is for. The entire neighbourhood was celebrating. Every dutchie was happy. We got our revenge. A revenge so sweet. We met up with friends and headed to the pub which was overflowing with people partying.

An incredible game. The defeat seemed so humiliating and destabilizing almost completely avenging the previous World Cup. If it's somehow possible to make up for losing a World Cup final in a single game that doesn't involve winning a World Cup then this was that game.
