    GUYS! I totally forgot to drop the name of the last Anthurium!
    Cupulispathum (Etymology below!)
    'Cupula' / 'cupola' - A small dome structure
    'Spathe' - The sheath that encloses the spadix
    'Um' - Latin suffix
    The name means dome-like spathe.

    the content that the internet needs. so much scaremongering about when it comes to anthuriums. 10000% humidity etc. they don't need any of the fancy stuff to thrive. adequate watering & light is the big "secret" (there are a few varieties out there that can't exist below 80% humidity but they are not very common). i feel like the scene needs a bit of myth busting :) i'm even gonna say that they are the easiest to import, even at baby sizes.

    • @plantgayforlife
      @plantgayforlife  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A lot of that fear mongering was and is just gatekeeping to prevent the masses from buying a plant (growing and propping and selling it inevitably down the road) and tanking the high value plants. The truth is there are hacks to successfully grow virtually anything without owning a greenhouse!

    all your anthuriums look stellar but i'm obsessed with the carla and the antolakii. I'll be on the lookout for an antolakii now. 4 out 5 of my anthurium babies are spending the winter in low humidity. they don't really push out leaves rn but i really like watching the roots grow

      Keep their roots hydrated, the air warm(above 65f) and the light bright and they should keep growing through winter! Mine never seem to slow down even with the dip in humidity, which leads me to believe it’s just not as important as everyone thought😉and Antolakii I’ve noticed has been decreasing in price so we should start seeing more of them on the market this year!

    • @plantgayforlife
      @plantgayforlife  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      And they’re WRONGO!!!
      They say you need high humidity because it works for them. And since anthuriums are tropical, of course they CAN thrive in high humidity. The problem is high humidity alone is just one ingredient to the cocktail. In high humidity, you also need more airflow to prevent fungal infections, a less frequent watering schedule since they will be more hydrated from the air, and a much more aerated growing medium so the roots can have more access to air. If I used a “chunky aroid mix” as you always here (with big pieces of bark and perlite etc) that is gonna dry out wayyy too fast in my environment, which is 25%-55% humidity year round. So it depends on your environment and ambient conditions. 😉

    • @lucasvermeulen4454
      @lucasvermeulen4454 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If u have a humidifier, why is a much more aerated growing medium necessary? The roots will get more air, but why is that necessary? I dont see that.
      Apart from that I agree its part of the cocktail, but isn't everything?

    • @plantgayforlife
      @plantgayforlife  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@lucasvermeulen4454
      the short answer: plants transpire more in lower humidity, so they will dry out quicker.
      the full answer: it's all about compensation. most of us don't water our aroids every day. that would kill them. but the most popular aroids originate in the tropics where it rains every day. so where is the logic in that? they are growing in the ground which has endless drainage, or growing on rocks or trees which provide ample aeration amidst all of that rain. so they're drying out quickly and don't rot. when you water a potted aroid, that substrate is going to retain moisture and the roots are going to be sitting in stagnant moisture for a period of time. this is why we can't use garden soils for our indoor plants. they are way too moisture retentive because they are made for outdoor gardens, where water can drain infinitely through the earth. growing media for potted plants is always more aerated so it can dry out faster to prevent root rot. now you have to take into consideration a plant's transpiration rate. as the humidity of the air increases, the plant's transpiration rate decreases. which means if a plant is growing in a greenhouse where the humidify is 80%, and you take the plant out and move it to a room where the humidity is 40%, it's going to transpire more and dehydrate quicker, requiring water more frequently than it did in the greenhouse. having a medium more moisture retentive in a dryer environment keeps the plant hydrated longer so you don't have to water every single day like the rainforest, or multiple times a week. hope this clarifies 😊
