Laziest plant parent here. Regale and warocqueanum care is kind of different to other anthuriums just because they need a LOT of water around their roots and dont like drying out even a little bit. A "normal" person would put them in a planter with a large drainage hole and water it every couple of days or every other day even, as oppose to watering other anthuriums once a week. But I have them in a bucket of pon, without a drainage hole. I keep 80% of the roots submerged in nutrient water + pon. So I only have to see the water level dip down to 70% and I fill it back up to 80%. Never below 70% never above 80%. All these ofcoure in ambient humidity (40%-50% - Canada ), takes abt 4-6 month to acclimate from ecuador. I dont know for sure but I have a feeling that these anthuriums can do well without a lot of big air pockets in the substrate. I work crazy hrs in videogames so thats all the time I could spare for these plants post pandemic, forced me to go this route.

So you keep more to an half the root system submerged at all times? Interesting? My best performing queen was in fluval and about 1/4 of the roots were always submerged. Could this be the hack??
@@plantgayforlife Yes much more than half submerged actually, and the other part is also pretty wet because of diffusion(?). I make sure to keep the "horn" where the new growth is about to emerge from dry. I think in general while using lechuza pon I have rarely get root rot unless I try something extreme, so I think its maybe this particular substrate. Lechuza does advertise on how its substrate actively prevents root rot. It makes sense for Fluval since it is meant for aquarium plants. You might be right, maybe this is the hack. I once left an anthurium esmeraldense in only water for acclamation and forgot abt it for 3 weeks(!!!), it was alive and new roots shooting out of the water upwards for O2. That actually pushed me to try this on other anthuriums. It is a disaster for pendant anthuriums, veitchii, luxurians and metallicum tbh. But I do this for the regale, warocqueanum and dressleris its been working great for them!
I really appreciate that you put it all in one video and don’t feel the urge to release a video because you need to / don’t want to organize. It’s very well done and the opposite of the TH-cam stories trend.

I think maybe it would be more successful if you start it with a small plant so it grows in ambient conditions from the start - this big one may have gotten too big of a shock (don't know how it lived before it got to you, often in a greenhouse / perfect conditions). My Queens are doing great in prop boxes, I'm trying one in my bathroom as a way to try ambient but not too low 😅 I wanted to move one of mine into the living room but now I'm not so sure 😂
That was the whole idea: growing seedlings and mature queens in ambient. I only imported one big one. The rest were smaller. And since making this video I’ve heard a lot of people say that queens do okay in their juvenile form but will easily defoliate in subpar conditions as they mature. And that has happened to every queen and queen hybrid I’ve ever owned. It starts out promising, but when the BIG leaves start emerging, they go to shit. So be warned. They are tough to care for as they get bigger.
I’m growing my juvenile queen in room conditions and she’s doing just fine. Growing slowly, but definitely growing.
Big plants are usually much stronger I feel like so they can take it?
@@annafink2245 if you are referring to acclimation, it's actually the opposite. Mature and established plants are generally less tolerant of reestablishing to a new environment.
i grow mine in ambient conditions (after sourcing it semi-locally, all my ecuagenera ones died on me). as a last resort, I got a tiny seedling, it wasn't even on cataphylls or anything. it's growing like crazy, just put out its first flower + its growing offsets as well lol. this is 7 months of growth I think. it's growing in a mix of your usual anthurium potting mix but diluted with a lot of tree fern fiber. humidity is around 40% most of the time, temps are between 17ish celsius up to 28 in summer. I water it once a week except if its super hot, but that doesnt happen very often in the UK lol. this was my last resort specimen and now I think it's way easier than some of my other anthuriums.

I feeeeeel this. And this is something anyone invested in this hobby will eventually feel here and there. Hopefully there are more ups than downs but in the moment, it’s reasonable to be frustrated.

Hahaha! I was wondering why you were so inspired by this disaster of a video. But growing anthuriums in vases has been VERY successful for me. And I grow them all in ambient.

High grade sphagnum moss has been the trick for me to keep the roots moist like they enjoy and the humidity around the roots/plant is high because of moss as the substrate. Been keeping my queen in the living room for over a year now. Read 30-60 humidity depending on the day
And how big is it? Because my queens looked fine in their juvenile and adolescent sizes while in ambient too. But once they tried to get leaves bigger than about 16 inches long they start to defoliate and struggle
I’ve never owned a Waroq but I’ve seen some of my friends’ struggles with her and hunny…. I stand in solidarity with you! My friends’ struggles alone deter ME from getting one. I think I’m happier looking at other people successfully grow theirs than to put myself through Waroq Hell 🙃

What substrate do you use? Several years ago, I imported a seedling from Ecuador, but it didn’t survive.
Curly willow! I used to work at an upscale florist that used it all the time, but I forgot about it! It’s nice to use a live support stake-it used to root and sprout reasonably often in the shop, and that could be a fun dynamic to grow with aroids.
Hi, nice video, thank you 😊 The thing with no drainage is that you can't keep up with the fertilization since you can't rinse it and the queen needs the feed. I kept my queens always in ambient condition and potted my two I have together in one pot, so I always have two nice leaf's 😅 otherwise I keep them quite wet in soil and they keep growing till now 💚🫂 ps one of the two was my first Anthurium I had, so I was also one of the grazy people starting with the queen 😂 I fell in love with them and have many now.
I’ve been meaning to pot multiple queens together to have a nicer looking plant overall even if each one only has 1-2 leaves😂but I disagree with rinsing and flushing. I’ve never flushed any of my plants and I would say 80% of them thrive, 15% do okay, and 5% don’t do well at all. It might have to do with the quality of my water, which is very good. Someone who lives in an area where their tap water has a lot more chemicals in it may need to flush but for me it’s not needed.
I believe you starting over and them growing without leaves are coming back. Hope hope hope. 😅 you can do it

In hopes that this will help you or someone else......I purchased my queen because of your instructional video (and it was cheap on a scratch & dent sale) I put leca on the bottom with a sphagnum layer on top of a tube vase, and it has been doing incredible. I got it 3 months ago as a "starter plant" and it now has 7 leaves, 2 of which I received under my care. I live in the same situation as you, apartment with no outside space, and humidity that fluctuates between 35% and 55% (and yet NO crisp brown tips or anything). I did have to repot it one time because the roots were going crazy in the moss and down into the leca. The one addition I did make to your setup is I added a braded nylon rope hidden in the center to wick water to the top as it was staying dry and crunchy on the top layer of the moss. Mine receives a lot of light, natural in the morning (east window + Miami sun) and artificial (display, not grow lights) in the afternoon till 9pm. I feed it with 'Dr. Earth Pure Gold' and 'Superthrive Vitamin Solution' (Do plants even need vitamins???). I also bought a king (veitchii) at the same time, but THAT ONE is growing SOOOOOOOOO SLOW, both roots and leaves, that I could have bought an artificial plant and gotten the same effect.
Mine performed very similarly at that stage. They do well in their juvenile and adolescent sizes but when they try to size up to a semi mature size with leaves longer than a foot, that’s when it gets tricky.

I FORBID YOU TO BUY A QUEEN. I’m saving you from incessant migraines and heart ache. Grow some other anthuriums first. So many others are easier and more rewarding.
I am slightly scared now, my queen grows like there's no tomorrow. I drown her in water, fertilize every time and is sitting next to a humidifier still ambient humidity 40-50% sitting in the living room with the door open 24/7 and humidity being sucked but not a single sign of crisping. She even keeps previous leaves(8 leaves in total, has two growth points and pushes out two leaves at once) I have her in my aroid mix with half the pot filled with leca and on the side of the pot I made little holes like they do for orchids. When I see cocoa peat is slightly dry I water thoroughly and that's pretty much it. One more caveat with this plant is that it grows leaves FOREVER it can take a month for it to reach full size and you should NOT breathe near it, touch it or look at it for too long bc it will most certainly bruise. I was terrified of them bc of these kinds of horror stories but we have become buddies for some unknown reason, I just keep my hopes up that we'll continue the same relationship as she goes further into maturity ;D
I sprayed my new queen leaf with water and “lifted” it to spray the underneath and it snapped 😮😢 I was devastated! I won’t touch new leaves ever again! I’m glad you are having such good luck it’s encouraging to hear about something other than PON or semi-hydro being successful.

Agree on the new leaves expanding, takes around a month or so for mine to harden up its new leaves completely. the rate of growth itself is one of the highest though among all my anthuriums. I too grow it in an anthurium mix, consisting of a tiny amount of worm castings, lots of bark, perlite, pumice, bit of horticultural charcoal, & i dilute it further with tree fern fiber - around 50-50 ratio. Leca at the bottom for even more drainage & serves asca reservoir too i guess. Miss thing doesnt dry out for a good week, even with drainage holes. I also believe that myco as supplement helps a ton. Roots go absolutely crazy in a matter of days sometimes after a repot. I grew it from a plantling size, literally 3 tiny leaves without the usual silvery venation etc. She also holds on to at least 4 leaves at a time. I didnt think i could grow a queen as all my south american imports died during import rehab. The one i got growing is from the Netherlands, its probably a TC specimen (i would assume). Not sure if thats got anything to do with how well its doing. But yea this is how i cracked the code i guess.

Well, your experience is very valuable to me. I appreciate the videos of experiments with update. It is very important. I'm happy that instead of one Diva I just got myself 6 Crystallinum varieties and a Villenaorum baby (Mom is in ambient). But another fact is that I've seen successes in ambient conditions with Regale and Queen here in Ukraine. People started them very young and not imported, even from seeds. Europe grown, Europe sold. Netherlands max.

my warocqueanum esmeralda is super easy!! you should give it a try i’m moving it to lechuza soon she lives in ambient humidity and i had her in a grow tent before then i just took her out and she did fine i basically just keep her drenched with foliage pro i use 1 tsp per gallon or 5 ml per gallon i can also say it looks like it dried out to much a big thing with the queens to is flushing out mineral buildups which is why people have success growing them in self watering planters check out hakunalaplanta’s video on the queen it really made me change my perspective on them (sorry this is so run on i’m too lazy for that proper grammar bs)
I used to have Esmeralda. It was super easy for a long time…until it tried sizing up to a mature size. Then, just like the regular queens, it crisped up and looked shitty, all my hard work, leaves that were months and months old…gone. It was very depressing. Something about queens and their hybrids / cultivars have a problem with sizing up in a household environment.

They probably get between 100-800 foot candles but grow the best in the 300-500 fc range for most people
I grow my queen in lechuza pon with a self watering pot in ambient room humidity (sometimes as low as 25%), so it can definitely be done. I wonder if allowing the substrate to dry out too much between waterings was the problem? I think they like consistency above all else, so i wonder if having a reservoir that keeps the substrate moisture constant would help, rather than a more typical wet/dry cycle. I have mine on a wick system, so there really aren't even huge fluctuations in the substrate moisture with varying reservoir levels. I do find it to also be pretty particular about other things as well, such as nutrient solution and substrate flushing. I normally flush the pon weekly and the one time I missed a week, it yellowed a leaf. I also tried once to give it a different fertilizer and it also yellowed a leaf. So as long as I flush it and fill its reservoir once a week, it's honestly pretty low maintenance.
How big is your queen? All of mine were just fine and well behaved until their new leaves started exceeding about 16inches in length. As they get bigger, that’s when they become problem children and demand more ideal conditions. All my queens were great until one day they just weren’t and it always was when they reached a certain semi-mature size

Great video! My queen is struggling, too! It grows consistently but slow. Roots are very healthy. Leaves crisp quickly and just can’t keep more than one at a time 🫤 Makes me feel better about yeeting it if the time comes. 😆
it’s hard to kill a queen and it’s even harder to keep a queen happy😅never had one die on my or even get root rot. But my god are their leaves short lived if the conditions are perfect.
The Queen and the King those two are are a toxic couple for me and I live in the tropics😂😂 I am done with them, I will admire them in other people’s collection. Great video as always Jake and appreciate the effort put in it❤

I haven’t done a video on the patriciae but intend to do one soon! The short answer: I grow it in moss in a vase and keep it very moist, generous grow light but not insanely bright light. Watch out for spider mites under the leaves.

Like an older Diva just won't acclimate where the younger has less to compare/ complain about. I've had much more success with buying juvenile aroids than the big expensive grown in a greenhouse perfect conditions specimens. I've got the King going strong , but have not yet attempted a Queen😬
Stay away from the Queen. They seem to defoliate and become less tolerable to subpar conditions and care as they mature. They’re okay when small but when they try to get big they struggle. Notice how almost no one has a BIG Queen in their collection. Maybe one or 2 but that’s it.
Okay but I feel like getting a bigger warocqueanum was the issue here, because I feel like when you get it younger it's easier to adapt to your environment, but the older queens just struggle

Also! One of My first anthurium was a queen and she was a stump for a year. What brought her out was repotting with Micchorizae, and wrapping sphagnum all the way around the stem with cling wrap and now shes finally doing okay (in an ikea cabinet lmao)

Yeah growing in a cabinet or wrapping the stem are pampering tactics I wanna avoid. And I bought many queens of varying sizes. Most were medium to small plants, only one was mature size. And they all acted about the same. They would be easygoing in their juvenile size, but as they got more mature leaves they looked more and more tired until they were too ugly to showcase on a shelf.

That’s what I did. I had queens of varying sizes, including seedlings and they all gave the same result
I've been SO lucky. I was one of those dumb people who got an anthurium early - dark and narrow. And it still has the first leaves and is now growing in ambient, no drainage now. She's been so easy - I just lucked out!

It’s preserved moss! Real moss dried out and dyed green so it doesn’t need to be watered 😜

Take her back to the stump and the new growth will be much better with your conditions.
Already did that when they reverted to stumps post-importing. They do well the first few new leaves then look really bad as they get bigger when not in ideal conditions. Very strange. They become seemingly less adaptable with maturity.
