Amazfit Verge… a super smartwatch with phenomenal battery life, microphone and speaker to support calls and no Google Play. It is great, but how great exactly... ?
There are three main things to highlight about this watch: first of all - it looks like the hardware inside is the same league as the Amazfit Pace… that was designed two years ago - dual core CPU + 512MB RAM. It sounds like not enough - but that’s not true and performance is just about right.
Secondly, there is no transflective display - so if you are a fan of vivid colors and AMOLED - this one is for you. Maybe the only drawback is that visibility drops on sunny days.
Thirdly - and that could be the big decisive factor - no PlayStore. While it is obvious that most of the software is based on wearOS, this is NOT officially Wear OS, not certified by Google, therefore no Gapps framework. To people like me - that don’t need that many apps - not horrible, but for people that want customizations, watchfaces, keyboard and overall - connectivity to the Google framework - might be a deal-breaker.
So, besides the information about the dual core CPU and the 512MB RAM - and staying focused on the hardware - 1.3 inch AMOLED screen. Very vivid, and pleasing to watch, there’s a 390MAH battery. The case is done out of poly-carbonate. In simple words - it is mostly plastic, and might be more vulnerable to scratches than the Pace and Stratos models. The display is covered by scratch resistant surface, and at the time making the review I have no confirmation whether it is gorilla glass or not. It is certified as IP68 - waterproof, but not suitable for swimming. Bluetooth 4.2, is also available, GPS and Glonass support, upgraded heartrate sensor - this sums up the hardware specs.
The software - it runs an upgraded version of Aamazfit's in-house developed OS.
As usual - there are two versions of the verge - a Chinese and an international one. This here, although in English, is the Chinese version of the watch. To run it in English, you will have to follow a simple tutorial - which will require a PC or mac, the correct drivers, a small piece of software and a few commands to type.
it is good to see various sports modes, accurate heartrate sensor, excellent weather app, compass, music control, possibility to make calls, there even is integration of a primitive maps app (right now not working outside china). No Google Assistant and Play Store, no transflective display, no maps, no fancy looking design, and not waterproof for swimming.
The most amazing part is the battery life. Verge is promising around 5 days, just about the same as Stratos. I managed to get more than 7, and likely with more conservative settings and usage it may last up to 10 days, which is really impressive!

The verge seems good to me. I like a continuous 24h heart rate monitor which is accurate (AND 1sec interval like my Polar H10). Apple 4 is medical approved, so probably others have to up their game in 2019. You think the Verge is as good as Apple 4 if you just consider heart rate?
Hey, thanks a lot for taking the time and say all that! It is much appreciated and I like the fact you say they are "simple" - exactly the idea we have when doing that.
I cannot compare the heartrate sensors - as I do not have an iWatch around. But - we well know that Apple need to have products that will keep their sales at a good rate, and being recommended as "medically approved" it will guarantee lots of sales in the future.
There is nothing more accurate than a chest-based sensor ☺😇 ANd I do believe that the Verge is not too far away from iWatch 4. To me - the whole marketing around it sounds like the famous "face unlock" - nothing that was really "revolutionary".

@@TechMishka Thanks for the information. Also my feeling "nothing really revolutionary" in 2018. They seem to spoonfeed small changes to have us update yearly. I tried a few, but Heart Rate was far from accurate so far.
When I read Apple 4 got FDA approved I hoped Garmin/Others stop selling with slogan "NOT a medical device" AND I got hopes up for a major HR smartwatch update in 2019
I read your other reply elsewhere (sounds promising also):" By the way - Ticwatch S2 review is coming soon, it is WeatOS based 😎 And ... beats the sh** out of the Verge in terms of what it packs.". I look forward to that review.
I also heard Forerunner 245 comes out march 3rd (I do expect Garmin to up the HR to Apple standard). If not, then the Verge seems a good option, unless your Ticwatch S2 review changes my choice.
You asked for suggestion in this video. Well maybe you could share a little extra on HR accuracy of the Ticwatch S2 compared to Verge or chest strap (would be enough to know if there is a major improvement or not; so far I've heard that Apple 4 comes close to the Chest strap).
Yeah, I did say that, and I was not that right to say it, was I? It was based on the initial hype before figuring out how many things the watch lacks :( This is why I've set myself the rule to test for at least a week before publishing a video 👹🤑🤓

Me too! This is not exactly G3. It is something like Pace with AMOLED.
Worked. Easy. But had to find the ADB tool. Found it from the link below...then to the "original" link to download the 'all-in-one" tool. Need to connect the watch to the computer and let it auto-install, then run the all-in-one app, install drivers, then run ADB as described here.

Stratos still is better based on operating abilities and OS, screen isn't as bright but updated software. I'll still go with stratos

Hi Carlos - while I like the Verge because it is an interesting watch, I have to say it is good for sports, except for swimming and ... almost nothing else. The Ticwatch E may have shorter battery life, but it is giving you a lot of extra features thanks to the Wear OS.
If you want longer battery life + good sports options - then Verge. If you want to use Apps - then the Ticwatch.

I have tried the song player, but not tried it with GPS yet. Hopefully today :-) That is indeed interesting and will be a challenge for the CPU.
@@TechMishka Thank you! I also think it's a big challenge for the CPU and the battery, the S3 loose 20% of battery for a 30min run (GPS+CARDIO+MUSIC+BLUETOOTH), and 50% for 1h run. So i think that knowing that, will help A LOT with the choice :)
I have a S3 frontier and latest OS update and constant heart rate monitoring will only give me max 3 days with 8 hrs of wearing and moderate movement. Also WiFi is not switched on

Could you please compare amazfit verge Smartwatch with huwaei smartwatch
This unfortunately doesn't seem like a stratos replacement. With the always on display of the stratos watch all the stratos really needs is a way to respond to notifications (perhaps an oldschool phone keyboard in the T9 style) As well as perhaps google maps, more responsiveness and access to the assistant with voice support. No other watch has any of this yet with the battery life of the amazfit watches!
I can honestly say I can't go back to a watch that doesn't have the transfective screen so we can always see the time without doing the wrist flip. I like that the light does turn on with the wrist flip which is especially nice when walking outside during evenings.
Hopefully the Verge isn't meant to replace the stratos
They were stating back in September that the Verge should not be considered as Amazfit 3-rd gen. It is a different variation of the Pace/Stratos with phone call functionality. Maybe they are getting things right so that we see something awesome later this year.

@Tech4All - are the Preferences also not working on your chinese version? and did you find out how to deactivate the "rotate arm for screen on"-mode? i guess its in the preferences menu but unfortunatetly this doesnt work on english chinese version...
The preferences were crashing, yes. I have flashed the international version (video to be published tomorrow) - and it is now entirely international 😎

Nice, detailed review. I'm a Stratos owner and I thought i will change my watch to Verge because of the amoled display. I don't know... Stratos is waterproof, transreflective lcd is better in sunlight, watch housing is not plastic and has decent look and feel.
Stratos is more beautiful. This one looks very cheap and generic
Very good summary! This doesn't look like an "upgrade" - it is more like filling the AMOLED niche with something that works good.
As soon as I wear it for a month, I will definitely return to the Stratos.
Pace owner and I was thinking on getting Startos instead of Verge which is good but kinda disappointing on some areas lacking that Transreflective display which is a nice useful feature that most smartwatches don't have except for Pebble Watches (RIP). It also looks more of a smart fitness tracker than a watch with its unibody plastic design, not as elegant or professional as Stratos and even Pace (which I did get compliments on how good looking it is with leather watch band).
I wish that Amazfit will release a true successor to Stratos with Transreflective display and ceramic body and button layout as Stratos. They should at least just make their software more useful like ability to reply on notifications.
@@kornkernel2232 Hoping to see the same thing too. QUite honestly - white I like a lot the Stratos, it is not really a serious update to the Pace, except the design. Performance is about the same. Similar with the Verge. I have the feeling Amazfit are cooking something new.
@@TechMishka I hope your feeling is right. I really hope whatever their next would be a result from what they learned from Pace, Stratos, and Verge. I think it is becoming more obvious what the consumer wants from them and apply that for their next product. Imagine the best combination of Stratos+Verge but hopefully without asking for premium price like Wear OS smartwatches, which in my opinion would be a disadvantage if they try to match the pricing of Wear OS smartwatches.

A month later - I can once again confirm that the battery life is excellent. around 3-4 days with always-on display, 7-8 days without, and up to 10 if you use airplane mode in night, and lowest screen brightness level in daytime with conservative usage.

Hello. The battery lasts me about 3 days maximum. And I have GPS turned on because it doesn't go off, notifications, not a lot. I don't use Always on display ... My question is: How did you use it? I mean, what were you doing with him to keep you going for 6-7 days? Did you just look to see what time it is and occasionally a few stats? I've noticed that many complain that the battery doesn't hold up very well. I noticed that at the time of the review you were using an older version (then current). I used it the way I use most watches - 24/7, sleeping, with HR ON and so on.
I remember it needs more time to charge than an hour. Could be that there's something not right with the battery on yours. I remember the battery here performed slightly better than the Stratos 2;
Thanks for the review. I still have the original Pace and I'm happy with it, just seeing how things are progressing. I like the Stratos but as with the Verge it's too chunky looking for my tastes. The Verge to my mind looks pretty ugly so can't see me heading that way anytime soon!
Yeah, lots of people don't seem to be impressed with the design. And the powerhorse inside is what you have inside the Pace. So if AMOLED is not priority, we have reasons to wait a bit more.
Hey Michael thanks for the review. I have Stratos but not having phone call ability is bugging me. On the other hand I have Gear s3 but not using it because of the terrible battery life. So If I use Verge with BT on during day time, and in airplane mode during night, how many days can I take out of it? What do you think? Thanks in advance.
Hey Efe - thanks a lot for this question. Battery life is leading for me too and I can give a straight answer.
- With calls and sync all the time and NOT using the always-on display, and BT off for 7 hours per day - you can go around 4-6 days without any GPS activity or sport activity.
- if your display is ON all the time, then it is a day less. Never had a run below 3 days; Average is 4-5 days. Again - if you are using any of the sports modes, the battery life may be shorter.

I have the Pace and the Stratos and I am very pleased with... I expected a higher hardware with the Verge. The software appears to be similar may be with a better integration of the watch with the smartphone but it is not enough from my point of view. Furthermore, I think that the Verge is less attractive than the Tichwatch Pro which has a higher hardware (4 core CPU) and a more open software with Wear OS to Google world. I may be tempted with 100 USD price but with 150 it is not yet attractive... Michael, your video is very good. Many thanks.
STohme - these are the same thoughts as I had while making the video. In fact - I was a bit disappointed to see no NFC (and NFC was announced back in September). This is quite a pity, because a lit of people use this smart tech for making payments.
The software is overall no better than the Pace/Stratos - I liked the swipe left and right menus and they were better accessible. And no easy way to enable always-on display :(
Looks like the International version is right now 159USD, which means that the Chinese edition won't get below 120-130. So ... a bit strange.

It can control the music that is currently playing on the phone. No dedicated Spotify app.
5 to 7 days battery life ? It is a go for Verge... Ticwatch only last a day even you turn off all the always on display, wifi and bluetooth

I bought this watch, but was frustrated to find out that it doesnt have a weight training or general exercise setting. Forced to use the indoor cycle mode.

If you are asking whether I have tested the sports modes - yes, I did. I don't use the running mode myself, as I mainly play football (called soccer here) and use the GPS tracking to calculate a more precise distance. It is no different to the Amazfit stratOS, which means - very good.
Nice review. This is the first time that I see some upgrade worst then the past version, it is kill the good things in the stratos, always showing hours, 3 bottons, the design (verge looks like a five years old child watch). Microphone and speaker is the only thing I miss in stratos, not that I miss, but ok, I,ll admit, call on watch is better then on phone

Hello, how is the display compare with Amazfit Bip?
It is not that visible on bright days 😇 If you are indoors it is brighter and with vivid colors. Different technologies - Verge is AMoled, the Bip is transflective. I like the visibility in daylight, so the Bip's blown colors are fine with me. But you may prefer otherwise.

What about the accuracy of the Verge heart rate monitor?
I own the Pace, and here the heart rate sensor is very inaccurate.
After a 15-20 minute run, a heart rate that is far too high is displayed.
When using a chest strap, the heart rate is correctly recorded, but the battery from the Pace is almost empty after a one-hour run.
The accuracy is a bit better than Amazfit, but certainly not as good as a chest strap. The battery on the Verge will last longer, it is about 50% higher capacity than the Stratos.
A couple of questions; those is have always on display function? And how is the battery life at that point? And how is the NFC chip working with not Chinees paying apps?

- because no way to test it - hard to say. I am also quite curious about that...
- NFC right now is not even advertised. I saw in September announcement about it and now there's not a single word on Amazfit's website about it. Likely without google integration it won't be used...

hi can you advise me on a full android smartwatch to run an app called "xdrip plus" i am diabetic and want it to display my blood sugars from dexcom g6 sensor on my arm via bluetooth it must last at least 12 hrs and have own sim for calls ,nfc if possible but not a must,, not bothered what it costs as its a life saver i am hypo unaware ,it is working great on my samsung a5 phone but i would love to leave the phone behind.thanks
Hi ianbrrws - I am not sure which one will do that properly. And - since this is something on which your quality of life depends, I'd prefer not to recommend anything I haven't tested myself.
Please, check with some of the reputable manufacturers whether they will have any suggestions. As far as I know Apple will soon undergo some medical certifications.

It has already been released.
Yeah, it is already available. 159$ from the official Amazfit website. Most likely it will soon reach most of the Chinese websites too. And flashing the international ROM makes it identical to the International version.
What about the battery...how is the battery backup.
Check the notes after 10:10 - the battery life is a bit better than the Stratos, but the screen is not ON most of the time.

I have not seen this text in particular. Every watch that has some sort of wireless functionality or bluetooth will have negative impact on the health, unfortunately.

Yes - notifications are displayed, in fact pretty good. Up to par with Wear OS, and you can control the amount and apps to send notifications from the Amazfit App.

It is not that much different - besides the AMOLED screen and the lack of waterproof rating, the only real advantage is now the Alexa integration, which still is a little limited.

No way - this was a reference to the Chinese One. The Global rom doesn't have it at all, and according to Amazfit Support there are no plans to add an English assistant.

Yeah, you get updates. The Stratos kept on being supported for couple of years after it got released.

Yes, however they are not that mainstream type and it will take time until we get good alternatives.

Not sure which that one is - there are some chinese watchfaces in Mi Fit. You can use "Notify and Fitness" for Amazfit / Mi Band.

Hi Prakash. With the international version both of the mentioned features are not available. Not sure if there will be option for a voice assistant outside china or for NFC.

I can't see my contacts when I call someone it said no contacts have you got any solution for this? And yes I had got all permissions and bluetooth phone is enable on my watch
If all that is checked, then I have no idea :( Maybe you can try to unpair and pair once again? If that doesn't work - clear the app data.

Yes, this is supported! There are two running modes - indoor running and outdoor running. The indoor is NOT gps-assisted and also has a LAP-feature. The GPS/outdoor mode not only has the lap option, but also allows you to pick up routes via gps files and follow them.

Just checked and there's no possibility for tuning the seconds - only minute-increments. There is vibration at the end though.

xiaomi verge or huawei gt???????
I have huawei gt. It was big mistake to buy it. No bluetooth calling or answering calls, no sim card, in the settings menu you have only display, Do Not Disturb option, system and about. It's full of trening and similar sport options, but that's all. No god smartwatch for them who wants to deal with calls or messages.
When receiving messages, you recieve only 1/3 of messages or less. Beside that, I couldn't update firmware, now trying 1 weak, it finishes download and update and after rebooting there is still old version.I'm so angry, I did buy this sh*t. So my answer is xiaomi verge.

This probably compares most with the Huawei GT. They both are fitness trackers with nice screens, good battery life, and nothing else.
Yeah, we can say that. The more I use the Verge, the more I get a kind of frustrated about it - it is Amazfit Stratos/Pace with a better screen and no waterproof rating. Actually - the screen is better for people that like AMOLED. I prefer transflective. 😎
