At first, it might seem like people are exaggerating about Harry Kane, but when you think about it, there's a good argument that he could be the best player without a trophy. Kane is the only player in the top 20 Premier League goal scorers who hasn’t won a single trophy. It’s uncommon for someone as successful as him not to have at least one cup or some kind of silverware. Many players end up winning a trophy, even if it's just as a substitute. The only other player I can think of is Marco Reus, who didn’t win a big trophy until he was 28. Comparing Kane and Reus is tough because they play in different ways. But Reus did win two Bundesliga Player of the Season awards and made five straight Team of the Year appearances before finally winning a cup in 2017. I remember how sad it was when he missed the 2014 World Cup due to injury, he was such an exciting player to watch back then. Then there’s Stanley Matthews, who didn’t win a trophy until he was almost 40 when he won the FA Cup with Blackpool. Back then, Matthews was seen as the greatest English player ever, changing the way people played on the wing and later winning the first Ballon d'Or. Even the player on my profile pic never won a league title, so to keep him happy I made him a United player. If can't beat them, join them.

Ironic as it maybe, the Harry Kane's curse allowed Bayer Leverkusen to win the Bundesliga for the very first time in club's history, something that Michael Ballack didn't achieve when he was at Bayer Leverkusen. It was called the "Vizekusen" or "Bayer Neverkusen" curse. Best of all, they did this without suffering a single defeat throughout the season (though the unbeaten streak in Bundesliga was finally ended with a recent loss against Leipzig).

Paolo Maldini is a particulalry bitter pill. As an Italian, we had to wait out his entire career as an international player for the national team before we won anything. and who was the MVP in 2006 when we won the world cup? Arguably, it was Fabio Grosso, the left back. The man who played in Maldini's position. He 'won' the penalty against Australia in the dying embers of a game we looked like we were going to lose, scored the first in extra time against Germany in the semi's and score the winning spot kick in the final.

Maldini sat out because he was embarrassed by his previous performances and thought they didn't need him and said skipping 2006 was the biggest regret of his career. He's already the greatest defender to ever lace em up, but he would've been top 10 of any position if he won it. At least he has other titles to hang his hat on.

Michael Ballack might have won domestic trophies with Kaiserslautern, Bayern and Chelsea, but on the international stage he's probably one of the unluckiest players ever,.
In 2002 he lost the UCL final with Leverkusen (after losing both the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal). Afterwards he carried Germany (with Oliver Kahn carrying them as well) to the World Cup semifinals, got booked and scored a heroic winning goal, but missed the final due to the yellow card he received in the semifinal. Germany lost the final without their best outfield player.
In 2006 he came short of another World Cup trophy after his midfield partner Frings got an undeserved red card after a brawl following the quarter finals against Argentina. Without their midfield anchor Germany lost the semifinal against Italy and missed the final in their own country.
In 2008 he played his second UCL final with Chelsea, but they lost at penalties to Manchester United after John Terry slipped at the decisive penalty and missed. This didn't stop him from taking Germany to another final, this time the European finals after scoring decisive goals in the final group stage match and quarter final, but lost to Spain.
In 2009 he came short of another possible UCL final, this time due to questionable decisions favoring Barcelona who went on to win the UCL final against Manchester United.
In 2010 he missed his last chance of winning the World Cup due to an injury after a brutal foul from Kevin Prince Boateng in the FA Cup final, which ultimately ended his career at the national team as well, nearly missing out on the 100 games mark and ending his career two years later at Leverkusen

I mean that in some lesser friendlies where the Germans should have won very convincingly, they struggled a lot. Not to mention, before the World Cup, Germany had their worst finish in FIFA Rankings (22nd, I think) as a result of poor results in friendlies, including a 1-4 loss over Italy (the same team that also ended Germany's dream later in the World Cup and went on to win the entire thing). Last, but not least, they got grouped in Euro 2004, finishing 3rd behind Czechia and the Netherlands without even grabbing a single win throughout the group stage.

I’ll give you two names. Germán Dévora. Greatest ever UD Las Palmas player. He played during the 60s and 70s, when Las Palmas was a powerhouse in La liga, qualifying to UEFA Cup and Inter-Cities Fairs Cup quite a few times, but never reaching the finals. The closest he and Las Palmas got to a trophy was in 68 and 69 finishing third and second in the league, as well as a Copa del Rey final in 78, lost against Barcelona. He remains highest ever goalscorer for Las Palmas in La Liga despite being a midfielder, as well as a Spanish International.
The other is Tony Currie. Sheffield United’s greatest ever player. A delight to the eye, played as a number 10 during the 70s and 80s. Played for Leeds United and QPR too, as well as for the England National team.

It still baffles me how people never mention Signori when it comes to 90s Serie A strikers, and it‘s probably only due to the fact that he never won a trophy. Not only was he the leading scorer at a time when the likes of Van Basten, Sosa, Batistuta, Balbo, Baggio, Vialli, Mancini, Lentini, Massaro or Papin were in their prime (and del Piero, Inzaghi and Bierhoff slowly rising through the ranks), but he also appeared high in the scoring lists during the other seasons. Paolo Maldini has the worst luck with international football I think he even said he felt haunted lmao. If I remember he lost in 1990s to penalties to Argentina in semi-finals (I think they at least got Bronze), lost to Brazil in 1994 to penalties after keeping a clean sheet, lost in 1998 in the quarter finals to France on penalties, in the 2000 Euros they were seconds away from winning when France tied and then France won with the golden goal, and in 2002 world cup they had the Bryan Moreno referee incident, Totti's red card controversy and lost on golden goal in R16. It's quite unfortunate given Paolo was genuinely one of the best defenders, and also one of the best players I've ever seen but fortunately even without a world cup or a balon de oro people still acknowledge his efforts and contributions nowadays which makes me glad. I think Italy also inducted him into the hall of fame 2nd after Baggio which is cool. Sometimes the best don't win it all.
