- Deane shows how wooden boomerangs are made by an aboriginal family near Alice Springs in Central Australia. He ends up showing how to make a small plastic returning boomerang with an ice cream container.

The indigenous people of Australia never had bows and arrows but they did invent a hunting weapon no other tribal group in the world had. Makes you wonder what other inventions we would have if technology had taken a different path.
Many African tribes used these hunting weapons as well. Especially in Africa. A pharaoh of Egypt had the largest boomerang collection on Earth at the time

you can tell those are mass produced tourist rangs they are making. actual hunting ones were made with out of branches of which the grain curved with the rang, not cutting across it like they are doing here, which would cause it to be much weaker and prone to breaking when thrown

A lot of people say the indigenous people didn't invent the wheel ,in a derogatory way. However wheels only work two ways you either have an animal to pull it or you push it yourself and pushing a cart through the Australian bush in the heat is just not practical
Kinda crazy to think that aboriginal people were working with cross sections reminiscent of modern aircraft aerofoils hundreds if not thousands of years ago.
perhaps "crazy" in one sense, but perhaps not so crazy when you consider that Australian aboriginals are the worlds oldest known living civilization (at around 80,000 years), so they've had time to learn from experimental mistakes and refine the craft to perfection. Also, you don't need to take to the sky to experiment with aerodynamics, as paper planes show :) Perhaps also crazy is that no other cultures seem to have invented anything similar so it's quite a unique tool/weapon!
@@DaveWhoa I was near Cairns and a fellow said that they watched maple seeds helicopter to the ground and that's how they got the idea for the boomerang. (maple or some other native Australian tree with a similar seed shape).

Victor Poulin asking to the expert: in your opinion, how come do hunting boomerangs avoid the torque that makes a returning boomerang come back?
and after so many different shapes coming back, how can an asymetrical boom behave like a frisbee?

Only the second one would have any chance of returning as the others were only made for the tourist souvenir market.
