  • Not one to shell out $$$$ on reproduction textiles for my silly hobby*, I've acquired some knowledge about what a fabric needs in order to look historically accurate. I'll share some of that knowledge with you today in a piecemeal and disorganized fashion while heading to the thrift store and getting some cool stuff. And I light things on fire. It's a vlog!
(*but no shade to anyone who does. nice fabric is nice.)
    00:00 It's a thrift vlog!

YES! Lol Into early medieval; and I'm NOT buying wool at THOSE prices. I find linen, wool, and fur at thrift stores, flea markets and yard sales. (In our group, we HAVE to) However; the rules are much less restricted for later dress; as the brocades, and frills and ruffles and poofs come into play. Much more attention is paid to the finished product and how it looks; somewhat less stringent on EXACT materials or if every INCH was hand sewn. Unfortunately, since I chose an earlier period it's a bit harder to.....make do? AND with very simple, obvious seams....*sigh* The more elaborate the gown the more is forgiven. I LOVE your videos! And YES, finding affordable appropriate material so you don't spend ALL of your hard earned cash on your hobby! Yes, my first set of garb was made of bedsheets and the fur from a sacrificed stuffed animal. I keep a copy of the photo to remind myself that "an attempt" is "an attempt" and the information I have is the result of many years of making mistakes. Love the burn test; I need to use it often with "foraged" garb materials.

It sounds like you may be with the SCA. If so, fellow SCAn here, 14th-15th centuries.

    AGHHH THAT"S MY DUVET
It's the 100% cotton 'Bergpalm' from Ikea, so your fabric test worked very well. Seeing it catch fire... so easily... how can I yet slumber in its inflammable embrace??

hehe. Perhaps by watching some videos of polyester catch fire and melt into a burning toxic glue-y mess?

yessss! I think the material culture people and the historical dress people have a hard time finding each other on youtube and it's a darn shame.

As somebody whose looking at going back to school for a BA & MA in Art History (so I can somehow focus on material culture and historical dress/fashion interact)... there are channels for Material Culture... please share... my inner geek just did a back flip of joy...

@@Steph-zo5zk Dude I wish I could - I'm not super versed in costube/history youtubers so for me it pops up sparingly here and there, but usually for much later eras (i.e. Victorian) than the medieval and Renaissance/early modern eras that I'm most interested in. The best I can do is rec the book I'm currently reading, A Perfect Red by Amy Butler Greenfield, which traces the production and meaning of the color red after the discovery of cochineal and the impact it had on p much every aspect of European society.
