  • Last week I impulse-bought some discount carp crust leather in bulk on the internet. I got so much more than I bargained for. I'll talk a bit about the history of fish leather too!
In a few weeks I'll be back with some medieval fish shoes, so buckle up. If you have any other ideas for me, please let me know.
I bought this leather from Sea Leather Wear.

Bit late now, but I did a one day fish tanning course. After tanning the fish if you let them dry they got crunchy ish. To revive them soak them until they're soft & leave to dry until damp. Then using any vegetable oil, knead & pull & rub them until they are dry, pliable & definitely leather. You may need to re oil as you do this. Could help with your crinkly skins!

Thanks for the tip! Not too late as I definitely still have a whole pile of them haha.

@@making.history I was looking for ideas, I have 2 skins on the go & saw your video, was wondering how to get that green one on the thumbnail then realised they sent it to you. Making shoes is a really cool idea though!
Also there are quite a few youtube videos around now, maybe search for bark tanning ones, as the oil/soap ones might be different, in order to see how to make it pliable?
I'm making a little pouch for my brother atm with previous skins, bark tanned skins come out a dark brown to reddish brown depending on the tannin materials so I was curious about other colours! Have fun with the other skins 🤗

the look in the mans eyes as he gazed at the carp at 5:30 as you said the words "romantic" made me laugh so much. i think you should go full seapunk and make a leather jacket

haha thanks! it certainly made me laugh while I was editing it, but I'm glad I'm not alone. Noted, but it might end up looking less seapunk and more mad max.

Love your posts . Last week I went to a friends house and she showed me her mother’s collection of haute couture from the 80’s . There were 3 carp leather items from Gianfranco Ferre with enormous gaudy jewel like buttons . Lion head kinda affairs . We initially thought they were snakeskins until she then showed me enamel python suits and realized the first items were Carp leather !! Meticulously stitched together so that seams weren’t visible . These were in soft pastel colors and soft to the touch . Hope this helps !! I imagine since they were haute couture the fisheries and tanners were careful to not scar or damage the skins …. Thank for your research always . I live and teach Fashion in Tokyo Japan . Great work !! P.S. don’t call the carp ugly LOL

This would make great greaves. Or maybe a corselet (stays with no straps). Anything that can be cut and sewn in small strips.

Have you thought about making a reticule out of one? It looks like it might be the right size and shape.

Whole tunics? That's so cool! How did you learn to do that?
I tried egg yolk this week as a conditioner, and it really helped soften them without making them too greasy.
      Thanks! :)

That’s really cool. It reminds me of the pattern on ermine fur with the little black tips and dragon scales at the same time. I think it would be cool as trim on a fantasy cloak.

I stumbled across fish leather recently, funny enough from one of those youtube 'survivalist' channels, and its seriously caught my attention with all its possibilities. Ive been trying to devour all the info on it as I can and theres surprisingly little out there! I just think of the probably tons and tons of fish skin on an industrial scale that just gets turned into waste otherwise could potentially be used. Such a waste... With the popularity of 'eco-leather' recently (which is usually plastic or some subpar organic material like mushrooms that breaks down quickly) I think theres a potential industry here under our noses. You could remove the stigma with a decent public interest campaign on social media to explain the benefits and how the skin would otherwise be thrown away, add thats its from an invasive species, maybe a fashion house incorporates it into a new design, and I think you could convince people to buy products made from it.
Also happy to have found your channel, good quality content and competent editing so im surprised you have less than a thousand subscribers! Keep making videos like this and the youtube algorithm will boost you soon. Thanks!

Try wetting it and working it til dry. Maybe it'll soften and be more workable

Thanks! I tried doing that just a bit because I was worried i'd ruin it. it did seem to help the overall texture, but made the leather a bit puckered. I should probably just go for it

@@making.history There seems to be a lot of videos on youtube about tanning fish leather - I can imagine there are infos towards the end of those about how to soften it and finish it.
I found one that said you were supposed to make it moist and then stretch it in all directions over and over again until dry.
But look at all the other videos for more ideas/infos.

I saw your shoe making video first (thanks TH-cam - you really know my tastes) and was struck by how casually you tossed around the phrase fish leather. You made it sound like everybody should have heard of this material, and I was REALLY confused.

And yeah, oiling them will soften them up.

I'm here after watching House of the Dragon. Dragons are just land fish with wings, right??! Anyway, quite a bit of the Targaryen leather garb (notably on Rhaenyra & Daemon - who are the two "fighters") looks like it actually may have been made of carp leather??

@@making.history You could also cut wide strips from it, make a belt and face the backside with fabric which you sew over the edge to finish the strip edges.
Then you have a (colourful) fabric border on the edges of the belt and the interesting texture of the fish leather in the middle. Some wax or gum might help make it smooth.
