  • I used instructions from the 1838 sewing manual The Workwoman's Guide to make a historical chemise. #gussets
    0:22 Background
    1:20 Planning
    2:10 Cutting out
    3:21 Mantua-maker's seam
    4:56 Nitty-Gritty
    6:25 Assembly
    9:30 Ta-da!
The book is available for free online, so you can make yourself some gigot sleeves, a quaker bonnet, or "a waistcoat for an invalid boy of the working class," if that's what you need.

The music I used was Gaúcho by Chiquinha Gonzaga (performed by Markus Staab, with changes made) and Swipesy Cakewalk by Scott Joplin (performed by "E's Jammy Jams" lol).

I make things, software, electronics etc. Leaving accurate instructions for future me, or others, is hard. It's no wonder that when looking at old designs there are going to be some head scratching moments trying to figure out what the writer intended. It's difficult even now with all the tech. we have, cameras, etc. Respect to those who even attempted to record what they did, bearing in mind that most designs and skills were passed along by showing, not by documenting. Hopefully videos like this will help in preserving and passing along skills/information to those willing to learn. Assuming the technology persists.
    Thank you.

Thank you! That's about as much as I could hope to do. And yeah, right now I'm trying to make something I designed a month ago and my old notes are proving to be..... somewhat lacking haha

Lovely and well done. I've seen that sewing manual--amazing things in there!! Re: necklines: Some use a top that fits as a guide for how to cut the neckline. It is usually higher in the back, lower in front, for an adult, by @ 2". Your neckline is generous. If you'd like it to be a bit less generous, making a casing for elastic (or a ribbon) could reduce its generosity. I'm enjoying your videos. Thanks.

Thank you! That's a good tip. Yes, I might need throw a drawstring or ribbon in there.

It’s so entertaining to watch through this and be like: yeah, Lydia hasn’t changed all that much. 😁
