Gonja is spoken by as many as 230,000 people, primarily in the West African nation of Ghana, where it is one of the more widely spoken languages in the country’s North. A Niger-Congo language, Gonja is a member of the Guang family, which contains more than a dozen other languages, including Efutu, Dwang, and Gua. Gonja is one of eleven nationally recognized languages in Ghana and, thanks to a recent shift in politics, is being integrated into public school curriculua as part of a transition away from English-only education. It is written with a form of the Latin script.
