Helen is full of revulsion and hatred for her husband. She can't believe what she has seen, but is resolved to act properly around everybody and to protect her friend Milicent and also Lord Lowborough of the shameful knowledge of Annabella and Arthur's cheating. Meanwhile, Walter Hargrave is always trying to get Helen alone to try to insert himself into her affairs. He even goes so far as to say suggestively to her, "Ah, you are free at last!", implying now he can have her for himself. Helen finds this insulting and orders him out of her sight. He later asks forgiveness for his forwardness and she does forgive him. Annabella is embarrassed at first, when she realizes that Helen knows about her affair with Arthur. She implores Helen not to tell anyone. Helen says she won't, but not for Annabella's sake. As time goes on, Annabella becomes increasingly bold in her manners, and loses no opportunities to flirt with Arthur, even right in front of Helen. Such affrontery! Annabella even has the gall to say to Helen, that the latter should be happy because only Annabella is able to love Arthur in the way he should be loved. She brags about being a good influence on Arthur's behavior and perversely asks Helen to take good care of him for her while she is gone! The guests are finally going to leave Grassdale tomorrow. Yay! What will happen once Helen is at her home with only her little boy and the servants and...her husband?
