Know that the video is over 3 years old today (25July2020) and this is a nice tutorial on a NP t-case rebuild. Just to let people know, _when_ the 3 pinion planetary is accessible, *it can be swapped over to a NP241 t-case 6 pinion planetary* . This mod doubles the torque handling capacity of your t-case + it more robust for sudden torque "spikes" that may happen when one is out wheelin' in their Jeep. Good video here!
Great video, very helpful in my 242 overhaul. One note- the bearing you cut out can be removed if you heat the rear case with a propane torch from the inside. I heated it uniformly for under 2 minutes and it slid right out.
I see that you are using Craftsman 'SNAP RING' pliers in this video. I have a similar set. It looks like it was quiet a struggle. Those are actually 'LOCK RINGS' or sometimes called Circlips . You could pick up a set for about $20 -$30 . Makes the job much easier. We just ordered a set from Amazon. I recommend SK.brand . Or I seen a very sturdy looking set from a company called SpeedWok. Probably make much lighter work of your next transfer case project. I hope this info helps you out a bit. Thank you for all your great videos
Do you have a video showing the part(s) in the 242 that give you full time 4WD as well as part time 4WD? I've seen several 242 t-case videos but nobody has ever shown those magical parts that give you both full time and part time 4WD.
I'm in the middle of a 249 to 242 swap. 98 GC 5.2 Your video is a great resource, but I didn't hear anything about this. The 249 input/planetary has a narrower bearing in the case. At least mine does. I set the planetary in and it would not go all the way in. Well I noticed the bearing difference, and had that "AH-HAH!" moment...
Hi Dale and Jason. I've been making this swap for a week now... Used my original 249 front case half and input shaft with a 242 back case and all other internals. The video has been incredibly helpful, though in my case things put up a lot more of a fight, like snap rings and stuff... One thing I'd like to point out... What is called the "mode fork roll pin" is not the piece you point out in the video, this pin is inside the fork attached to the center shaft, when you remove this pin you can remove this center shaft from the fork and basically remove all the assembly. You can also wiggle stuff around and remove these parts without removing that pin though, like you did. The other "pin" you show in the video is not to be removed. Just my $,0.02 in the most respectful and constructive way. Thank you for making this video!
Good morning.I have a 93' v8 limited with the 46RH & 249 J TCase Can i use the input shaft from this case into a 242J? I have read something about the old gear cut and i not sure if i could do the swap. Thanks in advance
I assume that your np249 was an earlier version. I have to do the same swap for my ‘94 Grand using a np242 from a 97 XJ. I read that there needs to be a hole drilled for the mode fork roll pin but I didn’t see you do it. Is that something you missed or it’s not a requirement?
I have a 97 Cherokee XJ with a np242. I had to do a complete rebuild on it. Now it gets 2wd, part time 4wd, no full time high 4wd, neutral and 4wd low. But I don't understand why it is missing 4wd full time? Any suggestions?
Hi, I am wondering if you have any videos on cylinder head gasket work. I have a '97 ZJ 5.2L. Oil is leaking to the cooling system. Any intel on how to diagnose and repair would be helpful. Two areas I am concerned about are 1) resurfacing the heads...what is needed for that work, and 2) the left side where the A/C tubes are, how do I get to the valve cover and head? there is very little room. Thanks so much
Thanks for this, I think it's going to be a big help to me. I have a '98 242 that I have all torn down and seeing all the pieces laid out, I'm honestly damned intimidated by it. Hoping I can figure out where all the snap rings and little orings go back together. One question: The little springy rings that go around the various bearings for the input/outputs, did you put those back? I notice you mangled one pretty good and didn't see any sections showing you placing them back into their places.
I'm assuming the oil pickup was cut by a stretched chain? Was gonna re-chain my 242, but gets pricy fast, for chain, kit and gears. Hoping to find a low-mileage gently used t-case. Great videos, though. Take care.
Hey man great video. I did a 249 to 242 swap now my rear drive shaft has 0 slack. It barely fits. Did you change to another shorter than 31" from u joint to u joint? If so which one do I need to look for? Will an zj drive shaft work? I've seen some of those shorter.. Thanks
did you swap JUST the input shaft, or the input and planetary gear together? Also, how do you know if the teeth cut is different on planetary gears is it obvious?
I've got a 249 transfer case with a viscous coupling I want to run a thousand crank horse power thru it is there any way of beefing these up to hold that kind of HP reliable. I know people are running 800 to 1000 thru stock ones but it would always be in the back of my mind that I was going to destroy it on launch.
we are doing the 249 to 242 swap, had it in and it would grind going into reverse when engine was above 750rpms. we could not fit the input shaft from 249 into 242 planetary so we swapped whole assembly. could this be the cause of our problem? have it back out again and dont really see any obvoiuse signs of the grinding noise, we are going to reinstall 242 input shaft and see if we can re-install into the zj???? thoughts?
james moon There's a few different types of driveshafts on these but if they match up you shouldn't have any issues. I actually have another video on replacing the drive shaft on this ZJ. Check it out!
damn happy with the video, i just have a few questions. Can you sell me one!? i have a 249! but that needs to be rebuilt anyway. but looking for those other options for my 99 jeep grand Cherokee limited!
best tires to get? its not choice of brand as everybody knows its michelan! But its a choice of tread style. i pick deep (wide deep groves) . old store called western auto had a poka dot style that was great. looked silly but was supreme traction on every surface. but it was 24% louder then summer tread. and it lasted 30% less miles. still it was the best designed tread ever.
Great Video- I am trying to do the same thing and this has been incredibly helpful with one problem.... What Year is that Model 242 J Transfer Case ? Will Years 1996-1998 242J Transfer Cases work as your video is showing....It seems that the Model 242s that I seen and have ordered by mistake have the wrong Output Shaft with a Rubber Boot instead of the Cone and the shaft is too long -....If you can tell me what year you used that could help me get the right 242 J Transfer Case - Thanks in advance for your continued help - Brian
That was also another Great Video, I have searched the country for an ZJ 242s (1996 - 98) and XJ (1996-2001) with this cone in the video but I can only find 242s where the Output Shaft has a rubber boot or shaft only without the cone. Was there a unique part number or other way to find the 242 that looks like the video to help in my quest....or trial and error will have to work by verifying by sight only. Thanks for very well documented, interesting and entertaining videos.
I have a quick question. You know the thin spacer that was inside the differential where the needle bearings sit against, were there 2 spacers or just the one? I have 2 on my work bench and don't know where the second one goes. I think I see in the video now. Sandwhiches the needle bearings correct?
So, the difference between the 249 and 242 Planetaries was just a diameter difference or a length difference? Just wondering, my planned swap is a Cj body on a Rubicon Frame, with the 242 T-Case. Liking your vids.
hi gues !Its very useful video thank you for doing it.Could you please help to define how to choose right 242 transfer case and not to make mistake .I am taking about swap for jeep zj 5.2 .Thanks
Hey Dale I did the swap 249 to the 242 and I swapped out the shift tab it will not go into two wheel drive this is on a 95 Jeep my question is what shift tab should I use I noticed that there is a number on the shift tab which one do I need to used ? Thanks
Use the tab from the 242, adjust the factory linkage all the way forward for 2wd. Make sure there is no play in linkage bushings or the shift throw will be off
Hello from Spain, I am the happy owner of a JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE ZJ 5.2 of 93 where I mounted a transfer case 242. The problem is that my input shaft has worn out, my question is whether I did well by changing the input shaft or should have changed The planetariums too. Many thanks and congratulations for these videos so good. Sorry for my english, he's the google translator.... 😉
Thanks for watching! I appreciate the support. If the input didn't mesh with the planetarium well for some reason, It will wear out prematurely. I'd look at replacing the input and planet together with a pre May 1994 set. Cheers from America :)
249 to 242 swap if you have a later years 249 like a say 97-98 is a downgrade.. the 249 is a superior case... spend the money get a new viscous coupler.. and be done with it..
That's a really complex rebuild, but man you did a great job of taking us step by step. Thanks of all the time you put into this video!
TrailRecon Thanks. It's a great swap! I really like being able to do my daily driving in 2x4. Makes a big difference.

About to do this myself, thanks, been enjoying your videos for a while now.
Great video- i did mine awhile back and wish I had this video to use to help it go faster.
What all extra is needed for the swap besides the transfer case

Great video but where did u find the 242 rebuild kit ? Thanks
Good morning.I have a 93' v8 limited with the 46RH & 249 J TCase
Can i use the input shaft from this case into a 242J? I have read something about the old gear cut and i not sure if i could do the swap. Thanks in advance
i'm doing this exact thing soon, just with a NP231. thanks for the great video, well done, this will help.
Cool! Glad it helped ya!!
I would like a 247J repair with the plastic shift.
I assume that your np249 was an earlier version. I have to do the same swap for my ‘94 Grand using a np242 from a 97 XJ.

on the 242 when in the fulltime position should I be able to turn the input shaft and hold the front output shaft with a no turn condition?
I have a 97 Cherokee XJ with a np242. I had to do a complete rebuild on it. Now it gets 2wd, part time 4wd, no full time high 4wd, neutral and 4wd low. But I don't understand why it is missing 4wd full time? Any suggestions?
Can you tell me where to buy a 242 that has been converted with the 249

5:05, you can rent a Blind Hole Bearing Puller

+Bushcraft North of 60 yeah, can get expensive quick. We had to look for a while to find something that'd work. Thanks for watching.

+Tim H. Great. Thx! Glad to have you
If i get a 242 out of a zj can't i use the drive shaft from it. Thanks videos are very helpful

Did you see my video where I do a side by side comparison of the 249 and 242? I show the years there and discuss what works.
That was also another Great Video, I have searched the country for an ZJ 242s (1996 - 98) and XJ (1996-2001) with this cone in the video but I can only find 242s where the Output Shaft has a rubber boot or shaft only without the cone. Yeah, I tried to include everything in order. Didn't remove any spacers that I didn't show in the video.
Guys what that big number 16 next to red information tag signifies?
So, the difference between the 249 and 242 Planetaries was just a diameter difference or a length difference? Just wondering, my planned swap is a Cj body on a Rubicon Frame, with the 242 T-Case. Liking your vids.
Had to swap out input shafts because of length
Thanks.
Can I use 242 for swap.... Now using 247 (wj) 2001
hi gues !Its very useful video thank you for doing it.Could you please help to define how to choose right 242 transfer case and not to make mistake .I am taking about swap for jeep zj 5.2 .Thanks
+michael kugel Thanks! Check out my video where I have the 242 and 249 side by side. I cover specifics there. Thanks for watching.
i have a 97 grand cherokee 5.2 with 249 and want to swap to 242 should i change both the input and output shafts from the 249 into the 242 housing
Did you get an answer? I'm assuming it doesn't matter which one you use.
I’m going to the same rebuild and putting a 4” lift do in need a 242 SYE. Please help
How did it go? I'm about to do the same swap. Any other hang ups?
The vc is out on my 249. I really want a 242. I can't do the rebuild. What can I do.
The easiest is to have the VC replaced. The 249 isn't a bad case.
Hey Dale I did the swap 249 to the 242 and I swapped out the shift tab it will not go into two wheel drive this is on a 95 Jeep my question is what shift tab should I use I noticed that there is a number on the shift tab which one do I need to used ? Thanks
Did you change over your shift linkage to the 242 shift linkage?
Riley Britton yes i did
Use the tab from the 242, adjust the factory linkage all the way forward for 2wd. Make sure there is no play in linkage bushings or the shift throw will be off
Where did you get this case all the ones I find are 99-01
+TheMagicMan119 ordered it online
Awesome job helped me a lot.....thanks spaghetti arms 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
Did you use a new chain or no?
We did not.
Do u have a facebook im having trouble with my nv 249 and cant really plaxe whats going on
from which transfer are you using the chain?
Kept the 242 chain in the 242
Thanks a lot, great info
Olá pessoal..!! Parabéns pela técnica ...da Caixa de Transferência...Belo Vídeo legal!!! GOSTEI!!!!
Obrigado
