    Awesome video, I'm getting ready to replace my zj 249 with the 231 and was wondering about the input shaft. Didn't realize you can swap them. Thank you for the info brother. Glad I subed.

    I couldn't get Mopar fluid off the shelf in my small town so I did some research and found out it's just Mobil 424 repackaged, so I got an available equivalent. Shell s4 txm. Heavy duty tractor transmission fluid suitable for submersed brakes. Hydraulic fluid

    Heck yea man I pulled mine out of a Durango 231j HD it bolted right in but I had to cut about 2 and a half inches maybe 3 off the output shaft for my drive shaft to slide over enough to bolt back to the rear end but other then that bolted right in but I also converted mine to 4x4 it was 2wd when I bought it

    Just did this same swap 247 to a 231 with 6 pinion planetary and heavy duty chain 1.25 with new bearings n seals, loving the two wheel drive option my gas mileage has gotten much better ,the handling in my front steering is amazingly different I love it ,you should have the stock bracket for your linkage to the 4x4 shifter and it has two wholes you need to use the the bottom whole for proper 4x4 shifting ,have fun my friend I'm also enjoying mine .

      I am having a problem of it popping out of 4wd low. I cut 1/4 inch out of the 231 linkage thinking it needed more throw. But still doing it. I am going to undo the linkage. put it in 4wd low and see if it pops out. Then I will know if it is the cable/linkage or something internal.

      @@richardnichols1532 I found a 4 planetary gear set and had an extra set and pressed two out of the extra and pressed those in with the four so I have six now it makes for a stronger planetary gear set

    I did the 242HD swap with sye in mine at it was direct bolt in and gave you the extra 4 high range. 242HD has 4hi open, 4hi locked, 2hi, 4low. However you got a great deal on the 231 and there is more aftermarket support.
    The 242HD is the same case used in the HMMWV except it doesn't have 2hi.

      I set out to find a 242HD that day at the junk yard but no luck, but the 231D has the wider stronger chain and does what I need. Thanks for watching.

      yes 1.25" and I found a 6 gear planetary on EBAY.

    So did you put the 247 input and output shafts from your WJ into the 231, then put the 231 into your rig? Sorry if I’m asking something that is obvious but I’m new.

    Does the original yolk off the front output shaft on the 247 fit on the 231d?

    NP231 is a very good transfer case as it may be little more sturdy due to its simplicity. Just upgraded a 2003 Jeep TJ's NP231J to have a SYE, 25% wider chain, 6 gear planetary from a NP242 and 2WD low.All this work, why no addition of a 2WD Low there?

    Yes the 231 was "even in the ZJ". I have a 231 out of my zj I'm fitting with the parts from the 249 I just pulled out of one of my wjs. I was interested to know they were in 1500 trucks which means yours is likely heavier than mine but while apart ill do my upgrades. Digging the planetary upgrade !!!!!!!

    Did you reuse the 247 case? I know the Dodge 231 has a different bolt pattern for the transmission. Just in case some people don't know that.

      No the 231 case. It bolted right up no problems. 247 case is shaped differently and has chain guides. It might work to just use the 231 guts. Not sure.

    Hey man Where was that third planetary that you showed from? 5:49 and could I still use my wj as daily with this transfer case swap?

      On the bench was the 247 planetary, the 231 and the 6 pinion from a HD231. Yes it can be a daily as you will now be driving around in 2wd with a uncomplicated transfer case unlike the 247 with clutches.

    If a put on mind the 242 j that has the wj v6 what’s the diference on the 231 that youre putting???

      If I remember right the 242 also has 2wd so that is pretty much like the 231.

      It has been a while but I believe it was basically direct hook up.

    Nice video, I'm very much enjoying your build progress. A few comments from someone who has built several 231's and 242's over the years.
    @11:53 you need to install the input shaft and planets first, before the input bearing retainer, so you can install a retaining ring on the input shaft. see Bleepin Jeep's 231 th-cam.com/video/d7dQWrKoUxM/w-d-xo.html.
    Don't use a gasket between the T-case and transmission. If the transmission rear seal fails you'll never know, as the space between the two gear boxes will hold fluid.
    You don't ever need to remove the large snap ring that retains the ring gear (the one you almost forgot).
    I don't know if the dodge variant already has it, but you can get a 1.25" wide chain from a 231 C (chevy). Go from 1" wide (typical in jeep) to 1.25" wide. Still fits in the same case without issue. Upgrade goes hand-in-hand with the 6-gear planets.

      Thanks for the input. Ultimately I did it two or three times. So the editing was a mix. Hopefully I got it right and was running good this weekend when I drove around the industrial park driving through all the ditches. This one was out of a full size and did have the 1.25" wide chain.

    Hi,
    why did you swap main shaft?
    Was it from np247?
    As i saw you swaped input shaff main shaft and 6 pinion planetary.
    It looks np247 man shaft is ticket than and shorter?

      I put in a SYE slip Yoke eliminator kit so that comes with a new shorter shaft. The slip moves from the case shaft to the drive shaft, is longer and better angles.

    Does the 242 t case shifter assembly work with the 231?

      Yes in my case with the WJ it bolted right up. I did alter the lengh of the lever on the case to get a full throw.

      only differense would be the input shafts may have different spline counts and lengths.

    I have a 2004 WJ overland 142k mileage...I’m curious Was it worth it? Did it remove the annoying turning noises...Also would you consider building one for me?

      I am very happy with the 231hd I swapped. No issues and 2wd. I am currently not taking any new work until at least jan-feb of 2021. Thanks for watching.

    Is there a reason you picked the 231D over a 231J

      I was at the junk yard on the hunt for a 242 but found that one in a full size dodge. I think I paid like $75? The D has the extra wide chain so it is a bit stronger. But the case and bolt patterns are all the same.

    I'm in the middle of the exact same swap.. 247 shifter lever hits the side of the 231 case before it shifts all the way to 2 wheel ... What's the solution? What have all these folks done who have successful swaps ?

      You can either find all the used parts from a 231 shifter assembly. Or go to Novak shifters and buy one of theirs.

      james duncan I used one off of a Jeep Liberty I pulled my 231 out of a Durango and put it in my wj I went to the junk yard leaned under a Jeep Liberty because it was the first Jeep 4x4 I went to it looked about right so I took it to the parking lot swapped them and mine works a great

      james duncan if I remember right it was a 231 that was in the liberty also but the shifter just mounted different and was shorter

I’ve got the same model wj and am working on building mine similar to this truck. On a trip to the west coast of New Zealand I’ve started to notice some sinister noises comming from the transfeer case.       Grand Cherokee Dana 44A uses the rear end.

      Specifically it uses the ABS sensors and tone rings on the rear axle. If you ever do a rear axle swap you can wire the rear inline with the fronts to gain speed signal.

      I originally looked for one of those. None at the junk yard that day. A few 242j but no HD. So I found the 231D and went for that. $45.
