  • In this video we are going to open up a transfer case, in this case (no pun intended) we are opening it up to change or replace the input shaft. Some years had different splines on the t-case input shafts and therefore will need to be changed when mixing and matching different year transmissions with transfer cases. Although I'm only changing the input shaft this video could also help you to get the case open to replace the chain, to replace the output shaft, or to install an SYE or slip yoke eliminator.

    my friend went to stealership for changing a bearing, and costed him almost $2000, what a rip off :-(

    Awesome! This saved me a whole host of time! Just needed to change the chain and input spline. A lot of other videos remove the tail housing, oil pump, vehicle speed sensor, and tons more circlips etc. This is way more simple!

    Thanks for the video! If I can make a correction though, perhaps this can save someone an extra step. I am a professional mechanic, and having just finished this exact job, check the part number on the bearing for the input shaft. It should be the same, so there's no reason to swap bearings or the whole half of the case. A light tap with a mallet should set the input shaft on the bearing with no troubles, just be sure to double check that you can put the snap rings back in before sealing the two halves together in case the bearing has moved out of place

      No, depending on what year/model you got your np231j from, there is definitely two different bearings. A thicker or thinner one. If you don’t know which bearing you have you can compare the input shafts. The one with the thinner bearing will have a collar made on the input shaft that makes up the difference to the thicker bearing. I don’t know if that made sense lol but I’ll gladly send you pictures.

    Like to thank you for your video on pulling a transfer case from the salvage yard. I went and pulled one the next day. All the bolts went easy but one on the cross member that held up Transfer Case. I got some from the salvage yard a saw all to cut it off for $25.

    Thanks for the proper disassembly video.. I took my last NP231 apart by winging it and definetly realized I missed some steps on the way. I got it apart and back together though. However, during a massive burnout at a car show I turned my case into shrapnel. Turns out 400hp through it from an LSx and GM 6L90 was too much when a ujoint cap let loose throwing the shaft out of balance... This literally tore the t-case to pieces.
    I have to put the 31 spline input shaft in my new case so that it will once again bolt to the 6L90 trans. Then I can get my LSX swapped Kia Sorento back on the road!!

    ok, finally a pro who might give me some feedback about a question i have.First off your site is awesome ive learned so much.Thank you!! My question is as im doin clutch and and sye kit i have oil ot of t-case and i grabbed front out-put shaft and turned it quickly about a 1/4 turn with 4wd engaged and it clunks but no chain slap.I feel and know tension goes from one side of chain to the other when twisting frint yoke back and forth.But how much clunk and noise is too much.I dont have quiet a 1/4 inch play from front trans. input shaft until rear output shaft from t-case turns.It seems like little slack but its a 99 tj 4.0 and its not been beat up and wheeled alot.im 2nd owner.But im sorry im dragging on but this could make you a good video to show when a t-case is ready for a rebuild and why and what is common for t-cases to sound like and any info that your a pro at explaining would be awesome.I would really like to go through the t-case but ive busted the budget lately and just want to know what is normal and not.i have no leaks and its a 231-j 5 speed and chain not slapping so please tell me what you think.it doesnt whine or make noise on road.But of coarse if in 4 low in higher gear goin kinda fast it whines a little.But considering its in low and its being stressed all i feel are gonna whine some,Right? Or no> Please help,you have more experience that most all

    I rebuilt my tc three times just a few months ago. had to keep taking it apart and putting it back in because I couldn't pull the shaft out far enough to accept the snap ring. finally I had my buddy shift it a few times from inside the cab and I was able to fit everything together. what a headache though.

    So I bought one for parts as a rebuildable core, same situation as yours, 21 spline to 23, I tried removing the yoke the same way and it ended up BREAKING my casting lol. I did use like 10 penetrating oils, got the rust off the exposed threads and used my impact for like 10 mins trying to loosen it. Even after it broke I put the yoke in my vice and I can turn my workbench before I could open that! lol

    This video has helped me out lots to what i looking forward to do when opening up the transfer case. Just a question or two....
    Every time my jeep shifts at stop and go traffic, it shifts hard and clunks. I have adjusted the tv cable and checked everywhere and everything in the transmission, So i narrowed it down to the transfer case.
    Bottom line, Can i just gut the transfer case but only use parts necessary for 2WD?
    4WD Chain, etc?
    I never use 4WD/ AWD never needed it. It be less weight and better gas mpg for me.

    I have a big problem with a 4x4 silverado 2011 1500 ..you are 3 times the 4x4 is activated when is running and after 3 or 4 hours away and the transfer gears break case ... is dash swith .. ...

    im gonna inspect bearings and ill probably put new fork pads, and ive been looking for the t-case shifting fork bushings that ive seen that you have replaced maybe all dont have, that are on the fork shaft where it slides back down into case.Please any input much appreciated.Ive been watchin you for years.I know your pressed for time so i really appreciate it very much.Robert A

    if Im understanding this correct... in situation where you want to take a spare NP231 w/ SYE pre-installed...and swap it into your yours (w/out SYE)..... one could:
    . remove the front half off NP231 (while still on the rig) ...
    . Do the same to the spare w/SYE....
    . swap the spare's front into the back half still on the jeep
    Sound about right?
    asking cause on mine to use the spare on the rig.... would have to have the input shaft swapped from one still on rig to the spare before use. Thus thinking just change the front half while it is still on rig and be done with it.

    I got some transfer case/ transmission question. You might be able to direct me in the right direction lol. I have a jeep with 46re trans going bad 3rd time. I found a built A500 aka 42rh is what I've been told again lol. Want to run my tcase in jeep now but the input shaft looks shorter than the one I pulled off the A500. Any help would be appreciated

    So when I put the 23 spline shaft in to replace the 21, will I have to replace the bearing due to the difference in diameter of the new shaft? Or will it fit with the old 21 spline bearing?

    Do you know if ATF +4 fluid contains Friction modifiers?
    I'd like know to choose better RTV of Permatex.
    GEAR OIL 81182 (if there are Friction modifiers inside oil).
    ULTRA Grey 82194 (if there are no Friction modifiers).

    We are doing same thing now on 2 np247j should the t case be in a certain gear 4wd hi n or 4 low before splitting 1st case got stuck bad when we tried to pop it apart had to pull cone off to get it apart

    I just did a transfer case the same way as you did. Now that it is in the jeep I tried to shift it into four wheel drive and nothing it’s won’t shift at all like it’s frozen or stuck.

    thanks dude - respect and a salute to you. I recently purchased a 1977 Chevy K5 Blazer with a NP203. It is leaking badly and I believe that it has a cracked case. Going to have it towed abt 15 miles to a repair shop to r&r the 203 unit. How much damage will I cause to start it up in N, let the engine warm up abt 5 mins, then back it out of the garage, then back and forth to align with the tow truck. ? Any advice on changing the input shaft? mine has the turbo 4OO, not the turbo 35O, shaft spline is different..

    Thank you for this video, I am wondering if anyone knows if all NP242 Input gears will work in all Np242 styles. I am about to tear down a HMMWV (32 Spline) NP242HD and replace the input gear with a 242J so it fits my 46rh Transmission (23 spline). Called several offroad stores and some parts manufactures and no one knows for sure, If anyone knows please let me know. thanks in advance and thanks again for the video

    Question. Is the process for changing the input shaft for the 231 T-Case in any way similar for the 242 T-Case? I've heard that, other than the different 4-wheel-drive settings, they're largely the same, so.....

    With the cut of the old input shaft bring wrong, did you buy your input shaft from Novak conversions? I’m having a hard time finding the right 21 spline shaft to put into my late model case. According to Novak conversions website there are a ton of options between length, etc and getting the right one is a head ache.

    Hi Matt, Looking for your opinion regarding a leaky rear yoke on my NP 231 TC. The rear shaft seal is bone dry, but the seal just behind the yoke appears to have been compromised. I don't believe there is one of those star-shaped washers like the front yoke(?) I'm thinking of simply using RTV, but not sure how well it will hold. Suggestions?

    Hey man, good meeting you at the show, Im sure you dont remember me since there was thousands of people there. Anyways, I have a NP241OR thats giving me some trouble. When the front DS is in it wants to make a god aweful sound, when I take the shaft out it goes away. Im thinking maybe a bearing is shot. What do you think?

      Maybe the front output bearing on the tcase or the ujoints on the shaft itself if it's more of a clicking noise.

    The tcase in my 94 Xj np231 J with 23 spline went bad so I bought a used one but it’s an np231 AMC which is exactly like the one you worked on with 21 spline. My question is can I do this exact same thing you did and use it in my 94 XJ? Im able to swap out the electric speedo and the other plug from my old tcase and put it into this one but will it work? Please let me know thanks 🙏

    In the old days (back at least to the 70s when I was a shop boy in an IH repair facility) the mechanics called those "Jesus Christ Clips". They would remove them and hear the distant "cling... ding... ding... ping..." They were never to be found again. I don't know how many miles I spent on the road to neighboring dealerships​ getting replacement clips.

    Yes, that was great. also HELP! Not quite sure what's up with the 231 in my 95 zj 4.0, I have some slack in the drive line and a noticeable knock when initially engaging or releasing the accelerator when the slack ends. I was thinking the input shaft gear, but I have very limited experience with tc's. Maybe someone could point me in the correct vector? It would be greatly appreciated!

      I don't hear it slapping around. It subsides when put into 4wd. And after taken out of 4w, it actually remains suppressed for a mile or two. Would this also point to a stretched chain? Perhaps it's simply not stretched enough to slap on the case? Thanks much for the lightning quick response. I recently started watching, looks like you have a good channel. I like the inclusion of all steps; it's very helpful for noobs.

    First time doing a transfer case, 242, was trying to split the case, and take the back side off while leaving the front side attached to the jeep. I have the case split but can't get it any further than about an 1"-1 1/'2 apart. What did I miss? newby

    I found bits of black rubber in my transfer case. do you think it is just rtv or something else? thanks in advance

      +Sean England Yes , most likely it is just RTV from the case being sealed .. You want to make sure you use just enough to seal the case and not so much that it squeezes out on the inside of the case ... It can clog the screen and cause the pump to fail ..

    I too have a jeep that the p.o. had left it with no oil. I have another np231 with different size splines. You ended up using the front half of your old transfer case so could i do the same and leave it installed? could i gut the destroyed transfer case and replace everything else with the good parts? Anybody?

    hey there, I have 95 zj with 5.2 249 tcase and want to change to a 231 command trac. I have both tcases out and it looks like the length of the input shafts are different. Can i just change these input shafts out and be ok?
