  • In todays video we take a look at efficient tennis volley technique. The key principles and positions that allow you to succeed at the net aren't be taught effectively IMHO. If you are a tennis player who has been struggling at the net or just thinks there might be a more efficient way to volley than please try some of the ideas and volley drills in this instructional tennis video. This is the best video on how to volley that I've seen on TH-cam so far.
    Really clears up the misunderstanding that volley is not a downward motion while explaining good mechanics, like driving the movement from the shoulder.

    I like the shoulder be the driver for the volley. One key point for me and perhaps the most important key point is stop you hand with your strings facing the target. If you do this it will stop your follow through and keep your strings o the target line giving you a bigger hitting window. Watch pros and they commonly end up with strings facing the target. This will also limit your hand movement to something between 6 to 18 inches. Most rec players swing the racket and end up with the tip of the racket facing the opposing fence or even past the fence. Stop the hand with your strings facing the target.

    Bill Tym told me players should start to learn tennis at the net by learning the volley first. Then players could move away from the net and increase the swing in the midcourt and later at the baseline. Players who learn tennis in that order tend to be able to play at all three areas (the net, the midcourt, and the baseline) while players who start learning tennis at the baseline first tend to remain being comfortable at the baseline and never really get comfortable going to the net. What do you think?

    Thanks for the video. To confirm, are you saying to go with a continental or more towards eastern grip for the forehand volley?

    • @JeffLewistennis
      @JeffLewistennis  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably closer to continental then an eastern forehand grip but yes. Most of the best volliers don’t use a true continental grip. Just adjusting the palm can make everything work better though.

      These are only high volleys . The key element in the volley is by far the stability of the non hitting shoulder so as to maintain control . Oscar seigneurial emphasizes a slight high too low motion , which also allows more control . The greatest modern volleyers like Edberg , Mac, or Sampras are the best because of their control, the second most important pattern of control is push off of th back knee when possible. Control is of the essence as a poorly placed volley invites an easy passing shot . There are too many moving parts in your shoulder turn etc, which is fine ehen there is time , but all of this must happen prior to the hit, this is the element hardly emphasized, the first volley especially the one met under the net level should have the most stability, the technique that makes McEnroe the greatest volleyer of all time

  • @thestuff8023
    @thestuff8023 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Even in the Pro Tour, nobody wants to serve and volley anymore. - everytime.

  • @arunjetli3770
    @arunjetli3770 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Volley is not a monolithic stroke . Lower volleys are stick stop where a shoulder turn makes your volley inconsistent. It is odd that. Everyone ignores McEnroe the greatest volleyer of all time because upper body stability , which is never mentioned. On high volleys shoulder could be used but the essence is still upper body stability. On slower balls still advocate no backswing unless it is really slow , but you can add a follow through that is longer something that I call an extended stick stop , with some slice effect. The mother lode is upper body stability , and yes there are differences between volleys hit deep , and the ones hit for angles . I would not advocate Eastern grip maybe modified continental . This was my essential difference with Vic Braden. Volley is a feel stroke , even with Edberg the upper body stability is crucial. On slower volleys the path is high to low even though slightly, although on the faster ones it is correctly stated by this young man the path is not quite downward but straight .unfortunate.y volleying technique of many pros is wanting because the Europeans dominate tennis so euro style volley has become popular , but most of the Europeans were poor volleyers even with wood racquets. One of the tragedies is that no one teaches volleys like Mac, the greatest volleyer of all time , because it is the most scientific because it emphasizes the control aspec on which a power may be built as heeded . Setting with the outside foot is good , but stepping forward is dependent on many factors, during serve and volley the first volley should be hit without moving and the second volley exactly opposite without stopping . My student Andrew Rueb currently the head coach at Harvard and I have spent a lifetime studying volleys . He was himself the best serve and volley player, overall I give the young man a high grade in teaching the basics of the volleys, I just Added a few caveats. All the best

    many thanks, Jeff, very helpful. Are you really saying that we should not be aiming to put spin on the volley? Aren't there ocassions where it is important to use spin on the volley to place/control the shot?

    • @JeffLewistennis
      @JeffLewistennis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment Paul! At 8:00 I discuss this. I think when you relax the racquet head back to take pace of the ball it does put backspin on the ball. I think it’s something that is done often, especially at higher level tennis, to make the volley safer. Just not sure it’s fundamental for people learning to volley.

    Good explanation. I've started out my fundamentals imagining the racquet is actually a butterfly net and I'm trying to catch the incoming ball. That helps square you up when meeting the ball and making sure contact is in front.

    Not turning is the number one error in people with poor volleys - they have the bad tip of “racket in front” in their heads and they end up being statues

    • @JeffLewistennis
      @JeffLewistennis  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. I feel like it’s another one of those things that people watch the pros do because they often don’t have time…then teach it as fundamental. Pros turn whenever possible.
