Damn I took 3.5/4.0 classes for a year and never heard these tips. Coaches just put us through the same dumb drills with little instructions. I dropped out of the classes finally, wasn't progressing. Your channel deserves more views..not seeing these tips on the other YTube tennis coaching channels and I've watched many hours from many channels..this is fresh.
Subtle changes for different volley scenarios have been around forever yet, never taught as succinctly as this video. Excellent job. Thoroughly enjoyed this and planning on doing this. Your other videos are equally awesome
In comparison to all the videos I've watched this guy gives the most no nonsense and the most leaner of instructions (in this particular video at least, his other videos seems to have this traits as well). The ritual talks or of the sort never to be seen or heard. You can directly apply these instructions in a game and it'll just work. That's what counts for me. His instructions tend to holds no bar unlike most instructional videos. I thank you. And by the way, I just pass on through the cosmetics or aesthetic stuff the other reviewers are noting on.
you probably dont care at all but does anybody know a trick to get back into an Instagram account?? I somehow forgot the account password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me
This is the best video I've seen on TH-cam covering the 3 realistic volley scenarios during actual match play! Almost all videos on TH-cam just explain the volley as move your feet and punch the return back. I'm coaching my 13 year old son how to volley. He has so much trouble with these fast pace and low return balls during actual match play. Now I have 3 techniques to teach my son regarding how to handle the various return types. I've subscribed to your channel. Please continue to video more excellent tutorials!
Wow. This is exactly what I need coach. 👍🔥 I thought there’s only one type of volley too 😂. I always wonder how to hit volley with power and put it away. So now I know when to do it and when not to do it. Awesome video. 🔥🔥🔥
Volley is my weakness as I play more at the baseline. Thank you for this presentation. It will help develop and improve my net game. I just subscribed.😊
Great work young man it is tuning nobody follows the greatest volleyer of all time that being McEnroe this is the essence of volley. I use the term importance of zero, namely your body movement during the impact . Even the second volley is based on stability of the upper body. , I emphasize follow through on the slower volleys still assuming zero on the backswing . Yes there is a slight backswing on the slower ball but your mind need still think zero .carry volley is more difficult so I advise a Mac/ Kgirios no knee bend volley as you need to position your volley rather than use power
Great Video !! Would appreciate one on soft/drop volleys, too. And, volleys of hard balls in the alley. But, thanks again for this video, really helped.
Excellent explanation and right approach. We thoughly enjoy and learn from your videos. They have been a great help in improving our game. Thanks a lot for a wonderful lesson. Can you show one more volly technique... when you are very close to the net in doubles and ball may come directed exactly on to your body above waist or face height?. Sometimes I can't escape being hit. Before you react.. it'll come towards your body. Thanks
I'm 60 and I heard it fine. It's no softer than when I take a lesson and the instruction comes across the net to me. Maybe even a bit better. But those lights there would bother me if I played on those courts tho... As far as the content, it's excellent. I like how he blows away the 1 footwork only technique of volleying. Things happen too quick to make it a one size fits all thing. Also how he plays it closer to the body on the blocks and not extend out too much. That extra split second on not extending out but allowing the ball to come in is huge but rarely taught or mentioned, tho people do it instinctively but can now feel guilt free for their "poor" footwork! I watched the finals for AO men's doubles and noticed often a lack of "classic" volleying footwork by the best so he's right on with his instructions. Thanks but maybe buy a body mike for those who are having trouble hearing I guess...
Hey Jeremy! Thanks much for your point to point breakdown! It's really helpful, though I haven't used still! I gonna use them. Please keep posting great tutorials!
Thank you so much! I only have one technique for volleying and was frustrated when I couldn't apply it to different types of balls especially on the low volleys.
Great video! Those three volley techniques breakdown and progression is excellent. Along with "The UNKNOWN Forehand Volley Secret", your videos are the best instruction found on TH-cam this topic. Sweet spot perfect.
I have not seen stop volley there, which is an important shot, too; secondly on very low volleys you should bend more leg-knee almost close to the ground, in this way you can catch much better one lowest volley, can’t? Thanks for your video.
great tips but the video volume is too low. slow ball = jump into, no swing, make a pop. nice. Catch-and-carry = hit low to high, walk into the ball. Excellent. You didn't say about the grip though. It looked like you had a softer grip to "absorb" the hit, and a tighter grips for the slow ball + catch-n-carry. Is that correct? I am decent at net but make many embarrassing errors trying to put away floaters on top of the net b/c I hit them too hard, my racket head is too open. Perhaps you could mention that when you up close to the net, you have to contact the middle (or top) of the ball, not below/bottom of the ball. Another problem that I have is to rush forward too much and misjudge the dip of the ball. Should I step aside or wait until I could recognize the path of the ball before volleying? Thanks. Subscribed.
James Farnsworth hello James, you answered your own question. As I described in the video yes, you should use the block volley technique when it comes fast at you. For a backhand volley your gonna use your right leg (as a righty) to take a step out and widen your base to create space from the ball as I mentioned and demonstrated in the video. You will generally use the 1 handed backhand volley instead of the forehand volley as it is much easier to cover fast balls at your body when time is limited. Another common problem I see when players receive the fast ball at them is they read the ball late- meaning they don’t know which volley to hit, well now you know! Also important to already be moving aka split step and be on the balls of your feet etc. otherwise you will tend to get “stuck in the mud.” As I like to say if your already ready you don’t have to get ready. So keep moving so that when it does come fast at you then you don’t have to start moving as you already are. That’ll give you a head start and quicker reaction/reflexes. Moving the feet also allows you to be more alert. Unfortunately most player don’t move their feet when the ball is traveling towards the opponent so when the ball does come back they are late with the whole receiving the ball sequence. Sorry I got off on a bit of a tangent but hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions or need clarity.
Just one more question. Where do you hold your racquet in your starting position? An online tennis coach has said that recreational players struggle with high volleys, because they hold their racquets too low and they are late on their high volleys. He suggested holding the racquet face close to your face. He said that for low volleys gravity will allow the player to get down quickly. Could I have your thoughts on this high starting point.
Chris Constable when in your ready position u want your racquet tilted towards 10 o’clock (for a righty) if you imagine a clock in front of you. This is because it takes twice as long to prepare for a backhand volley compared to a forehand volley which is why the racquet should be tilted towards the backhand volley side to 10 o’clock. As for the height of the racquet, the top of the racquet should be at shoulder level with racquet well away from your body.
Antonio Ambriz Hello Antonio, its funny I actually did a clip on the approach volley but I did not keep it as I felt it would have made this video too long. Great question. In the clip I deleted I said that volleys far from the net (transition volley, first volley) are going to be some form of the “catch and carry” volley type (often with a bit more backswing). The only exception can be if it’s high and slow it can be a swing volley (groundstroke out of the air). The reason it should be catch and carry is that you need control. As I said in the video when control is needed the catch and carry is always your best volley type. You are far from the net so you cannot do the “finishing volley” technique and the “block volley” would of course not even make it over the net. Hope this helps!
Great tips! I just have a question. How do you do a drop volley off a block volley? Leander Paes is awesome at this, especially in a doubles match I saw him play against the Bryan brothers years ago. I recall reading that he said that he uses mainly his feet and only uses his hands for finesse. Thanks! Here's another video th-cam.com/video/vyMUMw8I1nI/w-d-xo.html

Antonio Ambriz Hello Antonio, its funny I actually did a clip on the approach volley but I did not keep it as I felt it would have made this video too long. Great question.
