    there was a time not too long ago when i used to dote on your videos, tomaz - used to shadow practice in my small room and try to transfer the lessons on court. and then on march 13 of this year, i was playing in our local club and that ended with a grade 1 ankle sprain and a ligament tear thereby rendering me not fit to play tennis for at least the next 3 months. but even sitting here in my room, i feel like i vicariously learn and experience the joy of tennis by merely watching your videos. your passion, your simplicity, your style of delivery, the lessons, tips & insights are always of great quality. there's a lot to learn from you - tennis and otherwise and i would love to meet you in person someday.

      Thank you very much for the wonderful feedback! You can do a lot for the stroke technique by visualizing, practicing in front of the mirror and slowly shadow swinging. I learned my stroke technique in front of the mirror, I practiced many years in front of it and copying the shape of strokes I saw on TV. No internet yet at those times...

    Thanks so much! I learned tennis on my own and started watching some videos online but it wasn't until I stumbled on to your videos that I feel like I'm really beginning to understand the reason behind what I m supposed to do. Your simple but logical explanations along w training tips are really beginning to make a difference in my game. Truly appreciate it!

    Thanks so much. I have seen so much video teaching how to do a single backhand. Some are totally crap using pro as example and the way they teach is not practical at all. You are spot on, we are social player and we have not went to such an intensive training and no way we can play just like them. By far you are the only one who teaches how how to handle different shot to the backhand whereas the rest are just teaching how to hit with single backhand. This help a lot. Thank You so much. This really really helps.

      High backhands you’re almost swiping sideways, just spinning it back deep to your opponent’s court. It’s not an offensive shot, just trying to get the ball deep back so you can get back in position, and not give your opponent a meatball shot to crush

    This is probably one of the most pragmatic and helpful videos for 1HBH. A tip for dealing with tricky high balls on the BH side is the only thing missing. Great job!

    • @tomsd8656
      @tomsd8656 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's really no tip for that except you have to time the bounce so that you can strike it in front of your body from about waste to shoulder height. If you let it bounce to your head, it's too late. So you have only three choices: Time the bounce so you can hit in front, from waste to shoulder height. This could mean you have to take it on the rise, or back up until it drops, if you have room to back up. If you have no time to move, and the ball is deep at base line, you might have to do a half volley, as he showed earlier. And, lastly, if you're caught in no man land, which tends to happen quite often in double, you'll have to take it from the air, again, timing the drop to hit at around chest to shoulder height. None of this is easy, but I'd rather take one of these options and miss but feel good than being pushed out of position and either miss or give the opponent a short ball to attack.

    • @danwalsh3755
      @danwalsh3755 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The one hand backhand has a long follow through towards the target, for power and control. The windup should be more compact, the more pace youre getting from your opponents ball, and then you can take the ball on the rise on your front foot or back up and let the ball drop back into your strikezone, if your opponent is hitting a heavy kicking topspin ball thats hard to time on the rise.

    Thank you for the instruction. Do you have a suggestion for improving timing aside from practice, practice. The velocity of the incoming ball could be anywhere on a range of velocities. The idea of using a shortened swing for fast balls is good. What about other parts of the range? Some adjustable rhythm is necessary.

    • @feeltennis
      @feeltennis  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The key to timing the ball well is to imagine a zone in front of you where you will intercept the ball. See this video on forehand concepts, it's the 2nd one: th-cam.com/video/5LOKkHpFpFU/w-d-xo.html

  • @Theboyfromthecrowd
    @Theboyfromthecrowd 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Really great video answered a lot of questions I had when receiving a fast ball on the backhand. One question I have is: how do you deal with the one handed backhand when you're so rushed by a deep fast ball that you don't have time for that last step to get your right leg in front & across? Do you just have to accept that you've been outdone or is there a way to scramble the ball deep enough to have time to reset?

    • @alexisperez3459
      @alexisperez3459 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I try by all means to get my racket behind the incoming ball and slice it using arm action with my legs bends of course. This stroke requires good core muscles and fit legs but it is an arm shot so you have fewer moving body parts basically just your arm and a bit of the hip or core rotation but the arm does 90% of keeping the ball floating over the net to keep the point alive. I hope this was helpful, it works for me.

    The follow through is good for control of direction. Besides that, when hitting down the line and cross court, isn't it also concerns the striking of the ball at a different point? For the cross court shot, isn't the contact is slightly on the outside of the ball.

    • @feeltennis
      @feeltennis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, you can say the contact is a bit outside of the ball for cross court shots but that happens automatically if you hit the ball more in front. So I focus on hitting the ball earlier and imagine hitting the ball cross and the outside contact just happens. I would prefer not to make the "outside contact" a conscious thing because it is in my view a consequence and not a cause.

  • @markelliot1697
    @markelliot1697 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Tomaz, in terms of getting more height and top spin is the shoulder tilt also helped by keeping the elbow on the off hand high?

    • @feeltennis
      @feeltennis  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that could help, experiment with it. But I would always start with the ball flight visualization first without telling your body what to do and see if it can figure out the solution. Only if after a while you cannot hit the ball that you want would I look to do technical changes. You can very quickly fall into overthinking and that can just go downhill...

    Great video and teaching, as always! One question: how to deal with very low straight balls (below knee height)? I always fail to hit this balls (they end up at the net in a straight line trajectory) and end up recurring to the slice once i see a low ball.

    • @feeltennis
      @feeltennis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, maybe you don't go down to the ball enough with your legs / knees but you bend your upper body to reach a low ball. Those will tend to go in the net. Another reason could be that you're hitting them too late.

    Having started tennis late in life and having chosen the one-handed backhand felt like a persecuted minority. But your videos are so logical and explanatory. I love it. Please can you do a video on when you have set up for the back hand topspin drive but the ball is too uncomfortable and you want to slice it. When do I change the grip to continental? Why can’t I slice with my eastern backhand grip. Too much to do!!

    • @feeltennis
      @feeltennis  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You probably decide too late whether you will hit topspin or slice. The grip changes the moment you know whether it's topspin or slice and that should be by the time the ball is over the net - and of course well before it bounces on your side. Just keep playing as much tennis as you can and you will get better at reading the incoming ball.
