2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited - Power Liftgate Failure and Solution

  • This problem has been happening since our first few months of ownership almost 4 years ago, and Chrysler has been unable to resolve it after many attempts. Now they want to charge us money to continue to fail to diagnose it.
    The issue is intermittent, and can be very dangerous as it prevents the entire car from locking. Essentially, the liftgate fails to open/close, and the car fails to lock.
    The solution is to pull the fuse F50 and put it back in. Keeping a pair of pliers in the glove box is helpful. The little plastic fuse puller doesn't work well.
    Our lane guidance system, automatic high beams sensor, automatic daytime runners, and high beam lights have also stopped working over the years, and no solution has been found as of yet.

    I had just dropped my car at the dealership to get my liftgate repaired. While waiting i found your video and decided to cancel my service appointment to try your method first. You saved me a $125 diagnostic fee and the headache of dealing with a dealership. Thank you!!!!

      Happy to help! Wow this video has been getting a lot of attention, I can't believe what a pervasive problem this is for Jeep. Unfortunately my solution isn't a permanent fix, it may still happen again and likely will. But Jeep also can't seem to fix it permanently for some reason.

    • @sarahrshelton
      @sarahrshelton 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Curtis Priest that’s insane! Hopefully it won’t get worse than having to reset the fuse every now and again.

    • @CurtisPriest
      @CurtisPriest  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It happens about once every few months for us and this solution has continued to work fortunately. Our lane guidance and auto high-beams have also stopped working, but so far I've not discovered a solution for that. Luckily those aren't severe issues. My headlight did all die on me after only 3 years - we had them replaced, but that was definitely odd. Chrysler blamed it on water getting into the housing and then freezing, but we park the vehicle underground so I can't imagine that would be the case. Overall I have learned my lesson not to buy a 1st year vehicle.

      Sadly I’m having this issue again and 30 minutes of trying the fuse without a fix. The power lift gate works but won’t latch. Have you had any experience with replacing the fuse?

    • @CurtisPriest
      @CurtisPriest  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sarahrshelton I have switched the fuses around with other ones as well. Luckily that always resolves the issue for me.

    Thank you Curtis!!! I have been struggling with this issue for years and after making my 4th appointment for tomorrow with the dealership to fix this issue I ran across your video and was able to easily fix it myself and cancel the appointment, which was pretty good for a 67 year old grandma. The last time the dealership fixed this about six months ago, they replaced the locking mechanism and battery leaving me with a bill well over $600, so I was pretty irritated about having to go back in for the same problem. Thanks for giving me my day back tomorrow!

    Curtis you are a Great man!
    I am Italian and I bought a 2014 jeep Cherokee in Germany.
    Had numerous problems with the rear hatch that sometimes wouldn't close, exactly as described in your video.
    I was ready to go to the workshop to have the mechanism changed... and luckily I saw your post and I could fix the problem by myself in just a few minutes.
    Thanks again for your support !!!

    My liftgate latch was stuck on the closed position and it would not close. I pulled the fuse as you did here and, voila, it reset it and it closed. Thanks for the tip it was a life saver. Waaaay better than taking it to the dealer.

    ...my daughter just came home from shopping, told me "Daddy, my rear lift gate won't latch...it was working when I left the store." Found this video...had my doubts that this would work...pull and replace the fuse...? Don't fuses "blow" and have to be replaced...? But I did what this video suggested...and sure as shirt...the lift gate opened and closed again! But it still wouldn't latch...went back and pulled the fuse again...locked and unlocked the doors with the remote fob, pushed down on the rear hatch, and heard it latch! Used the fob to open and close it again, and it latched! Put the cover back on the fuse box, closed the hood...I'm having a beer! Thanks!!

    Thanks Curtis!!! Good video - right to the point and even shows the possible need for patience/retries.
    I've had this happen to my 2015 Cherokee several times over the years and was able to fidget with the latch using a screw driver to get it working again. But this time, NO LUCK. I imagine the program gets out of sync/confused. Pulling the fuse might just reboot the routine enabling it to eventually get back in sync with the gate and latch positions.
    Here's what floors me: There are many Jeep engineers driving these Cherokees that probably have had the same problem. I would think they would figure it out and broadcast the fix to the dealerships. Instead we have people spending many $100's of dollars at dealerships unnecessarily. I still love my Jeep Cherokee even though I have one of the funky transmissions.
    Thank goodness for TH-cam and guys like you that take the time to share fixes.

    • @CurtisPriest
      @CurtisPriest  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It does astonish me that Jeep engineers themselves, whom as you accurately mention, many of which must actually be driving this vehicle, haven't yet been able to come up with an effective solution for this.

    I just had this happen to my 2015 Jeep Cherokee. It had happened before but resolved itself in an hour. I had just used it leaving the grocery store. When I pulled in the driveway it would not work. Tried looking for the fuse puller but there isn’t one. I was going to take it to the dealer in the a.m. but decided to Google the problem and Lo and behold your video popped up. I grabbed my needle nose and gave it a try. Well guess what it worked 1st try. I thank you very much for your tutorial video.👍

    Solution Confirmed for my '15 Cherokee Trailhawk. Took mine in this morning to dealership for recall updates and while in their shop the tailgate locked and stopped operating. They claimed no responsibility but would be able to fix it with diagnostics and careful labor to pry it open. Sounded sketch so I went home and found your video. It seems the system update for the recall messed up the liftgate thus requiring the simple reset.

    Hello Curis. I ran into this issue today and since I know about the goings on at the dealership I was very hesitant call them for an appointment. The last time I went to them they told me that it would cost me about 1600 to replace and with the man hours included. Well I found the Mopar replacement lock on Amazon for $98 and my mechanic charged me $35 to install (15min). For some reason I ran into a problem but I'm going to try what you recommended. Glad to help! And haha ya, someone else has mentioned the fuse puller, but unfortunately mine don't work - they just completely fail to grip the fuse and they pop off. I was once left without my pliers in the glovebox when this happened, and I gave up trying to use the fuse puller and managed to just use my fingers after a bit of struggle and some torn skin. I definitely recommend keeping a pair of pliers in the vehicle just in case.

After pulling and returning the fuse, it took several attempts to close it by hand/lock the doors, but now it latches. The dealer wanted to replace the motor/latch.

      Did replacing the fuse eventually bring the lock back?

    • @choppinblock3179
      @choppinblock3179 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CurtisPriest Here's what happened: after replacing the fuse, I had same result (opens/closes but doesn't latch). I ended up making an appointment with a local dealer. I used bungie cords to keep the hatch closed. So during that time I did not use the hatch. After about 4 days my wife takes the Jeep to the dealer. They remove the bungie cords, push the button and IT LOCKS. Cost me about $80 just for them to "look at it".
      Funny you should ask at this time, because just 3 days ago, same thing happens. It won't open at all. I pull the fuse/put it back in, it then opens/closes but doesn't lock. My wife goes into the garage the next day, hits the button and it locks. For some reason it takes time to re-sync.

    Another fix ......thanks! Don't suppose you've had problems with the passive driver side door entry ? Car locks/unlocks on the remote but not off the door handle button nor unlocks from touch sensor... passenger side ok. Thanks.

    I tried this and it still wont latch. Do l need to buy a new fuse?

    My actuator just seems to dry hump the car while trying to latch. give it 3 trys and then stops. It appears the motor is working, but the component that latches and locks isn't closing enough when it engages the u shaped metal piece that is on the truck of the jeep 2017 grand cherokee.

      The Grand Cherokee is likely different than the Cherokee

      @@CurtisPriest I'm sure it is. The research I have seen is the 2014-2018 Cherokees of both grand and inferior have experienced the problem where the motor works, the switches are transmitting current, and the structural fraiming is intact. The fuse has been pulled, returned, and the battery negative has been removed for 30 minutes. Still no fix. I have a lease due in to be turned in 7 days and don't want to have to pay for them to see a flopping hatch when I pull up. I want to figure out how to get it to latch shut, while the plastic interior cover is secured, so that it might as well be their problem when I drop it off. The cherry on top of the ice cream was that the problem started happening 2 weeks into a lease extension. However, the warranty only covered three years, so even though we extended the lease, the warranty wasn't extended. yuck.

    My 2016 Trailhawk does not have a fuse in the F50 slot. There was no loose fuse in the fuse compartment so I assume it never did. I suddenly have no power to the lift gate at all and of course it won't lock either.

    • @CurtisPriest
      @CurtisPriest  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe try putting one of the other fuses in F50 and see if that fixes it? Are you sure you're looking at the right spot? It doesn't exactly line up with the way the diagram is drawn.

      @@CurtisPriest thanks so much! I think I was looking at the right slot but I tried just removing a reinserting each fus in that column and it worked!!!!

    I'm having a similar issue, I can push my liftgate button and it makes the sounds as if it were opening and it starts to open but closes once its opened a few inches only. It locks normally but wont open all the way and when I physically open it all the way myself, the button wont close it automatically. I have to physically bring the liftgate down. I have changed the fuse today and even sprayed some Penetrant in the locking mechanism in hopes of cleaning it up a bit. Still didnt work. Any recommendations? It stopped working right after someone crashed into my parked vehicle on the street. Insurance company refused to fix it because I couldn't prove it stopped working BECAUSE of the accident.

    • @CurtisPriest
      @CurtisPriest  ปีที่แล้ว

      If it was caused by the accident then I'm afraid I'm not sure what the issue could be. It sounds a bit different than the issue I had, because I couldn't even get it to lock when manually closing the liftgate. A wire could have broken lose between the lift gate and the dashboard perhaps? Or maybe there's a short (which is actually the suspected issue for the core problem in general, and the reason Chrysler has been unable to fix it for real).

    Instead of using metal pliers in your Cherokee's electrical fuse box, why don't you use the white plastic fuse puller tool that is located in the lower left of the fuse box?

    • @CurtisPriest
      @CurtisPriest  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I haven't noticed that tool. I'll have to check for it next time. My pliers do have rubber grips though at least.

      I thought the same. But, I could not get the fuse puller to grab fuse F50. So after many tries, even using both ends of the puller, I resorted to Curtis' needle nose pliers approach.
