I like the outside look of the previous version of the GC better, but I like the interior of the new ones better.
I have the Trailhawk trim of that model and I love it. I feel like I have the only one here in Colorado Springs too and I have taken it off-road down here and it works like a charm.
I think Jeep needs to go back to their roots and make vehicles for the average person. Drop prices across the lineup and stop being the American Range Rover brand. I miss the days in the not too distant past where you could buy a basic Wrangler and not have to get a 84 month loan to pay for it.
Problem is, people are buying them so why kill the golden goose?
@@jcollins1305 please Jeep just make ONE model of simple rugged off-roader with easy serviceability. It will not affect fleet MPG numbers much. Get back to your ROOTS.
YES!! Both Jeep & Ram! Corporate & Dealers NEED to STOP being DELUDED about their seriously AGING ANTIQUATED FLEET of vehicles and its Technology! Minus a few vehicles & the GC like my comment states. But even it's technically been 3.5 yrs since the intro of the 4X3, 4 yrs soon enough. The Premium price tag they are DEMANDING Plus the deluded dealerships who over priced the vehicles MORE BY THOUSANDS & THOUSANDS it's like come on Mopar! There's a REAL REASON MOST OF YOUR DEALERSHIPS HAVE SIGNIFICANT BACK UP OF VEHICLES! & It's NOT JUST BC THEIR CRAP RELIABLITY! BC YOUR FANS DONT GAF About that😂(btw I'm not a sycophant of the brand)But they DO care about the Serious Over Priced of EVERY VEHICLE! & Dealers who drop to What they once Were on a Now 2 yr Old Vehicle Still Nope! Drop it More! Had they not been Greedy in the Extreme to begin with, they'd be doing alright 😂
I love the new GC as is & innovation comes with cost. Fine. But 2 yrs later that needs to adjusted. It's not new anymore. Their brand is so far in the Hole, they Should be Giving cars away to solid buyers with money/credit for real world prices. Not deluded prices for a Bankrupting Company
The last real Jeeps have been the XJ and YJ. TJ is also ok. Next are wirh too much electronics etc. and too less rugged. And the prices are astronomical (in Europe).
@@estebandelasmontanas4879 that is a bit too old school for most LOL, but I like your thinking. I have a JK and it is the last one most likely as it is still pretty simple (only one computer and no start/stop etc.). I might consider a Bronco, but those engine bays are a nightmare of complexity, too
I had a 95 grand Cherokee and it’s 4x4 system was awesome, took it through snow mud and many fields on the way home from the bar and not once did I get stuck!
I saw one of these on the road 2 days ago and I looked on TH-cam for all the reviews I could find and said to myself “How come TFL doesn’t have a slip test for this Grand Cherokee?” and apparently, they thought about it first. Love it when TFL give us exactly what we were waiting for.
If I was getting a new Jeep Grand Cherokee, I would order a 2 row Overland with the off-road package. You would get A/T tires, ELSD (Quadradrive), skid plates, tow hooks, and better departure/approach. The advantage over the Trailhawk trim is that you can still get it with the V6. The Trailhawk is only available in 4XE for 2023. I would like to see a longer track record on those as well as a lower price before I would get the 4XE. However, in the end I am going to keep my '21 Trailhawk V6 for some time. I feel like I stole it (compared to prices today) when I bought it in 2/21 for $42.5k inclusive of the Protech II package.
Great explanation on the impact of the different drive modes Tommy 👍
lol doing offroading in SR trim with 21" wheels and all season tires?
Get a SWB Trailhawk 4xe for this test! Or even a plain SWB Limited!
Great test!
Tire, tires, tires. I agree that those tires stink. Also, the correct mode is normally selected prior to encountering poor conditions. V6 or V8? Torque helps.
Need the Trailhawk test to see what the difference the eLS and tires provide.
Recently bought a 4xe Summit Reserve. Good to see how well it can do offroad and the best modes for different situations. Thanks
It’s no WJ but she is purty
I would like to see you take the Expedition Timberline through this to really get a feel for the upgrades.
Really enjoy these slip test and on x videos
Appreciation for the effort this takes, never gave it a second thought till i watched others try and fail
I think the course is better over grown. It’s more like what most people are going to encounter off road. And maybe a better test of the vehicles.
How? The holes and dips are the same regardless. So how is it a better test?
@@flight2k5 I would guess because it shows how it would handle in a slippery environment over a dry one? However I don't know many people that go off-roading in rainy muddy weather, but I guess if it can handle muddy rainy conditions offroad then it can handle most anything. I think the main problem with this test in the video is the tires and the differential that was deleted🤷♂
@@Anthony-fd8mh I’m not sure what you’re referring to
@@flight2k5 the course is muddy compared to the usual dry and packed dirt genius, grip is worse on muddy and wet dirt
@@ramennoodlz it wasn’t muddy
Thanks!
This SUV needs Stellantis's new engine hurricane I6.
Lol needs a 392
I think the 2024 will be coming with it!
I agree. They need to put it on the Trailhawk trim, too. Right now the JGC Trailhawk is only available in 4XE.
You do realize that motor was designed here.
@@sonsofliberty3081 And yet, it belongs to the parent company.
In my 17 Cherokee the modes make a difference. Especially since I have the 2.4l and it is very sluggish IMO, if you hit the brakes and then back to the gas, unless you have it in sport mode. Then the throttle is very responsive and no delays. In snow mode you have to use a lot more throttle to accelerate than in normal mode, and the traction control is very aggressive.
It's not that it's sluggish. It's ment to help unstudy feet get good mpg. Sport mode increases throttle sensitivity. When you feel snow mode, it's cutting torque big time because that's what makes you spin.
I love my 2022 JGC trailhawk. Amazing car.
Awesome test, thanks, 5 passengers are ideal for rock climbing.
I think the best value is a nice used 2011-2021 GC. They are solid rigs and are better suited for Jeep duty plus they aren't so insanely expensive that only rich people can afford them
Awesome Video & Awesome Jeep minus the Slick Tires :)
Could you make a towing video sometime with the grand Cherokee L hemi and the grand Wagoneer?
Get the Overland and spec the offroad package which gets you 18' wheels with AT tires as well as skid plates and ELSD. Basically a Trailhawk (only available now in 4xe trim) at that point.
Yes, the ELSD works excellent!
Is the ELSD stock on all Overlands? I've been looking at used 21/22's and noticed most are only equipped with the Quadra-Trac II and not the Quadra-Drive II system. WOndering if there is a build sheet error on the VIN lookup.
@@The_Samsquantch If you want an Overland with ELSD, you need to find one with the off road package. For 2021, that package was called Off-Road Adventure Group II. 2022 models were the new body style and that package was just called Off-Road Group. Overlands equipped that way are rare.
@@moose201 Thanks for that info. I think I'm going to be just getting one with the regular Quadra-Trac II system as it seems to still work well and I'm sure I can figure out the best modes for whatever I'm getting in to for camping roads in Colorado. Though going off of my performance in my XJ at Tumbleweed, I might need all the help I can get. 🤣
@@The_Samsquantch Why not just get a used Trailhawk? They should be much easier to find.
Can u guys do a review on the regular altitude. U guys always doing reviews on the top trim stuff.
Question, wish one Pilot trailsport or the jeep perform better at the same trail?
Can you test out the AWD system for the Chevy Traverse?
That is one damn good looking Jeep definitely way upscale
beautifull scenery
I actually saw Jeep testing the new Grand Cherokee 4xE on the Rubicon Trail a couple years ago....
Would like to see more 4xe trailhawk videos. Or just a regular jeep gc off road version.
The ELSD works really well in the Jeeps.
Tires and lsd make a huge difference even in a two wheel drive truck .
Been waiting to pick one of these up but they're not shipping with rear ELSD like they're supposed to... an open diff Jeep is no Jeep, even with fancy braking computers
I got a highlander for MSRP while these were minimum 2500-7500 over MSRP. Crazy
Seems like the auto mode is less aggressive in this current gen. Prioritizing comfort instead of capability. Would be curious to see if the auto mode is better in the trailhawk trims. Great vid as always!
I don't think the programming is different across the trim levels, but the stock tire that comes with the Trailhawk would make all the difference in the world. (All seasons vs All Terrians)
From the videos I have seen, it seems the system is a little bit slower on the WL than Wk2. Wk2 was definitely faster responding
The non-L version just looks so much better. The porpotions on this L are weird. And if I wanted 3 rows, I would just get the Wagoneer.
you got to try it twice over as the gear box learns it used for slip tests often then it goes with less slip
Would love to see Quadra trac 1 in action.
Quadra-Trac I and II are the same exact thing in High-Range
Low-Range gearing is the only difference.
Wish you would have did the slip test in snow mode. Ps. Jeep has been not providing the limited slip axel for quite some time in the new Grand Cherokee L.
so glad you mentioned this was the "L" version as I want one of these but the "L" version wont fit in my garage but that's ok, I like the shorter one anyways and I would hope it would do a little better off-road. I wonder if you can do the same test but in an overland version and see if you get the same problems?👍
I have the L version and a pretty standard size garage. Fits fine with room to spare front and rear. It looks a fair bit bigger, but the L is only 12 to 15 inches longer than the non L model. I really like the added cargo space inside. I don't really need three rows, but with the 2nd and 3rd row seats folded, there is a ton of room inside. I could camp in it if I had to. I got the Limited trim.
@@drewwho4512 that sounds good. Unfortunately my garage is a bit smaller and the entrance is not as tall as a standard garage. I have a Cherokee trail hawk right now 2015 which fits perfect so I just wanted to upgrade to a grand Cherokee. The L version could fit in my garage if I didn’t have the garbage cans to our house in front of my car although not sure on the height? I only have two kids anyway so the non-L version would be perfect for me.
@Anthony-fd8mh I get it. I like the smaller GC, too. I just wanted more space for my long-term plans to travel the country once retired. For the money these currently go for, it makes sense to get the vehicle you truly want or need.
You guys should do this with the explorer ST before it gets updated for the 2024 model year
I have owned four Grand Cherokees since my 2004 in-line 4.0L six. I like the looks of my 2020 Overland a little better than the new design, mostly the flat, upright grille. That said, the new model is about $8,000.00 more than my 2020 was.
What a beautiful vehicle. My 2013 Grand Cherokee Overland is looking a bit out of style now.
I just bought a 2022 GC Laredo L. I really like it. It is nice. I still think it’s a good bang for the buck. Sure could be a little less.
I like the new front end lf the GC, the interior is ok i guess. Id still buy one if these over any other AWD vehicle.
I have the exact vehicle you tested in this video. This is my 3rd JGC. Yes, it is expensive, but nice luxury, quiet ride, and lots of room. I went with the HemiV8 (pretty bad gas mileage), but wanted towing capability and the added space for gear and dog. I agree with your comment that the factory tires, although nice on the pavement, are lacking for off roading (really lacking for serious off roading). As you mentioned this vehicle is great for getting to that campground spot, fishing spot, trail head, etc. It is certainly capable for easy and moderate off roading. For serious off-roading (not my thing) I agree going with the two row would be better and investing in off road tires. Nice review from TSL. Thanks!
I was a bit disappointed in the slip test and off road performance of this Jeep. The exclusion of the ordered limited slip differential was a real game changer here in overall performance. The slippy sliddy tires are an easy fix. (What’s a $2,000 set of tires on a $70,000 Jeep?) but the missing rear differential locker, limited suspension articulation and lower approach and departure angles do hurt. The expensive trail rash on the front and rear bumpers is going to be a thing.
I would like to see a more minimal spec Grand Cherokee L with better ground rubbing front and rear bumpers and good old fashioned easily accessible tow hooks installed. (Make them chrome plated because Grand Cherokee gets more bling!)
It would be interesting to see how the base model Laredo works. This one is pretty fancy!
@patonbike @tommy... I have a '23 Laredo if TFL wants to compare.
@@johnbriggs6203 Have you taken it on any forest roads or moderate trails? Curious how it does with the regular 8" ground clearance and the lack of modes.
@The_Samsquantch I've only had it on a few dirt roads. And down one muddy, bumpy trail (less than a quarter mile).
Would love to push it a little more, and test her limits.
Any suggestions? 😎
I have an overland L and the only thing I'm not a fan of is the power. Other than that, it really is great! I'm at 18k miles on my 23 and we've been across the country twice.
Liked the test. Good Video. I was able to get my 2021 Limited GC with the 5.7 at a fair price. Had to take the visa roof for 2k I did not want. Had to wait 6 months for it. And I still think 50k was too much money. But looking at today's GC, mine is a steal. Jeep has now over priced it's vehicles. They only can sell them to the smaller population of buyers that can afford them. I guess they want to use the high profit margin on these vesicles to pay for the R&D for the electric fleet. Only problem is that they will not have the enough customers in volume that can afford the product. I hate to say it but I will buy a Camry LE Hybrid as a daily driver and rent a Jeep a few times a year when I need it and save big money.
If you would have had the elsd in the rear axle it would have been better
Why was the limited slip deleted?
They don't have enough and they are mandatory on the Traihawk.
Well they have different trims which are different once get the once you can buy
There is also a cheap version for a cheap person , I love the idea to have a luxury grand cherokee that probably wouldn't ever meet mud or off road but it's capable with out the looks,
Is Jeep selling any Trailhawk now that they are 4XE only!?!?
How does this vehicle compare with Land Rover/Range Rover? JGC seemed to struggle, perhaps it’s just the conditions of the day?
Outlander PHEV vs RAV4 Prime roller and offroad test.
Enjoy.
I love Jeep, I have a WK2 myself. But they are taking the piss with these prices
Good job not as good as the Ford did when you tested it against the Subaru
Need better tire, like the Pilot trailsport
As the latest Jeep Grand Cherokee's have made a big step forward in interior look & feel and get closer to luxury SUVs like BMW X5, Mercedes Benz GLE,... , i wonder how they especially the new GLE (with offroad package) compares to the Grand Cherokee offroad (ie. slip test, actual off road course)
Amazing job kase and tommy so proud of you both. I’m so darn proud of you guys. Greatest friendship ever
Weird
@@seanm3ify. I know nobody talks enough about them. It is weird
Is Trailhawk with six cylinder engine discontinued?
Yes
What about the Wagoneer 4xe? (Plug-in hybrid). Any news, will it have a battery capacity larger than 17 kWh as in the Grand Cherokee 4xe?
Google is free :)
20 inchers and nonaggressive tread pattern handicaps a great 4WD system.
I dont know what it is about the Grand cherokee L, I still like the regualr GRAND CHEROKEE more. Also love the kardashian reference. :)
I own a Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit and from my experience, to get anywhere off road you have to be in Rock Mode. It is the only mode that actually allocates power to the wheels with traction. The other modes are not that impressive.
Yeah that is a go to the ski lodge Jeep. They need to figure out the 4x4/AWD system on that thing. Another thing is who on earth takes a 75k GC offroading......
The computer already has the drive modes. So why can’t it also figure out which mode to be in automatically???
Really wrong tire package for these challenges. Still nice looking GC
A set of venoms or falken wild peaks and it would be fine.
The old XJ will be rolling in its grave at this! Also will it last for 30 years like the XJ?
It would be rolling stuck on the rollers 🤣
I think that after another 30 years there will be still more XJs.
@@V8AmericanMuscleCar 🤣😂
Kardashian analogy, i am dying
I personally prefer the looks of the older jeeps , the new one just don’t cut it for me
This thing needs a true rear locker
It needs something for sure! Glad I have an "Old School" Jeep (Gladiator) with a no-nonsense "old-fashioned" transfer case -- not an electronic drive mode selector trying to "figure" something out as some wheels turn and others don't. And my Gladiator probably cost less than this Grand Cherokee.
-- BR
I'm sure the fast majority that will never see more than a few ice cubes in the mall parking lot, these systems are fine, but the curmudgeon in me wants a selectable 2H-4H-4L with a locker. The day Jeep switched to "modes" was the day they forever came off my shopping list
Deleting a rear lsd is such a disappointing "option"
Love these tests. Very helpful.
Over 70,000? Yeah, no.
Start growing sum crops and get sum cattle to supplement the down tyme from manufacturers. Wagu beef seems like a great investment
Huh?
Thank you for the testing video!! 👍
A vehicle like Jeep GC, I tend to think most people plan to purchase with intend to keep for a longer term, especially at that price range with too much plastic engine components under the hood "bonnet" 😉 and only a so so performance, that is absolutely Not what I would put my money in to; perhaps only rent one for the hack of it is about all. Regards
Oh P.S. Jeep GC T.V. commercial makes me 🤭🤮 just short of misleading advertisement 🙄
The question that begs to be answered, can a lifted Miata do just as well? I’ve got a test mule. Lol
When it comes to the Jeep Grand Cherokee.....the capabilities it can do are unmatchable
We love our capable Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, for sure! Openpilot works well on it, too. Wrangler Rubicon is even more capable but not so suitable for Openpilot.
If it had decent all terrain tires it would have walked the course.
Why would you expect tires that are off-road oriented in any way, when the vehicle was specifically ordered to be less off-road capable?
it might do better with proper offroad tires
61000 for a base 4xe, and it is awesome. 1,000 miles on 19 gallons of fuel, that is 52mpg! Yeah, I charge it, and guess what, it will get me to work.
Too many high end trim levels most people can’t afford. Try a Laredo.
It's odd how vehicles are so expensive. But how do you buy used nowadays with computer everywhere and screens that go out. I mean this would be what used after 3yrs? 50k? Now how do you spend 50k on no warranty knowing you will spend about 3k every few years to have new tech just like phones etc..?
Does this come with a bag of soccer balls in the back?
Looks remarkably like a Range Rover
😂😂😂😂what have you been smoking? Maybe kinda from about a mile away in hurricane rain & sleet at twilight 🤔 it Maybe might kinda look like an Evoq 😂
I playef with my toggle lastnight
Kardashian’s, funny Tommy. Always remember Tommy, it’s not the age of the vehicle, but the (Actual), Miles, right?
The stock tires hurt you in the mud.
Annnnd this is why you want the one with ELSD in rear and front
Yes, that would be only 2005-2011 with the Quadra-Drive-II package.
Jeep dropped the front ELSD in 2012. Was it too capable vs base JK to leave it?
The end of Jeep as a manufacturer is when they started to put power windows in Wranglers
at 73k i could buy two compass to this one
