Coolest 2D Mech game I know! Bought it in 1994 and it still holds up to this day! I also got Assault Suit Leynos (kind of a remake) and never really got into it even if the gameplay is faster and the graphics "nicer". Assault Suit Valken, you can feel the weight of the mech when you jump and hover with the thruster pack. The key to success is to learn when to use the shield and be careful when advancing forward. Don't go too fast. Move, stop, block, aim and shoot while always blocking incoming bullets. Stay in position, clear the enemies and advance afterwards. It's a game that rewards careful players. Look absolutely everywhere in the early levels to boost the vulcan canon to LV3 ASAP, focus on the missile launcher right after that. There's a unique mood and melancholy to the audio and the animations. Take time to let the intro play before going through it. I highly recommend this awesome SNES classic!! Great nostalgic blast! I hope Metal Warriors will come out too. It's not as "serious", but it's in the same vein and has different gameplay mechanics. Both worthy titles!
Its still hard, i have played Cybernator, i recently picked up Retrobit's translated rerelease of Assault Suits Valken for the SNES. From what i understand its different from the Switch version. Apparently the Translation is more accurate to the Japanese original. It has all the anime pictures that accompany the in game text and cutscenes also. The game is still crazy hard though. The additions really make it feel alot more engaging than the original in my opinion.
I adored the original western release of Cybernator, still have my SNES cart. I never knew until much later that it was modified from the Japanese release. Even more to love now, I'm hoping this will get a physical cartridge release.
This looks freaking great, thanks for getting the game some recognition, I’d never heard of it! That music at 00:54 reminds me so much of Brainlord and a bunch of other enix games from the 90s.
Nice that the Napalm gun can be unlocked from the start but it is a bit of a cheat weapon. What we need now is a translated version, preferably with an easy mode, for Assault Suit Leynos 2 as the original Assault Suit Leynos already has a remake.
Now let this be a prelude along with the return of Front Mission and Armored Core. Can you smell it? That's the return of mechs to gaming lads and ladies. Gear up and let's see some mech games that also have odd jobs like Steam Bot Chronicle did.. Now if my arms and hands will hopefully do better enough I'll be able to return to playing more too.
Good Review! I remember this as Cybernator on snes. This character is also in Senko no Ronde 2 Duo on steam and ps. The character is getting some well deserved respect🤝
Im just wondering if its worth getting if i already bought retrobits SNES release. I dont know what Declassified version adds other than save states and rewind. Technically i can get save states by playing my cart on my retron 5
I would have liked to have the entire Valken series.... I'm not saying that I'm dissapointed but...... only one game?? really, this would have been the perfect oportunity to have access to entire series.
Trivia: This game's illustrations and concept art are by Langrisser and Growlanser artist Satoshi Urushihara. I didn't even know Assault Suit Valken was a game, heh...
Did I buy the same title? The only options are volume and the new soundtrack is only in sound test. Everything else is the same as the SNES.....I don't see anything else unless I need to beat it first?
No physical edition has been announced. Since Rainmaker Productions is a small and new Japanese company, we have no precedent to see if they will try to find a boutique/limited physical publisher at a later date. For now, this release is digital-only.
i honestly enjoy its predecessor even more, Assault Suits Leynos on Sega Genesis, unforgettable experience, but the graphics did not hold up, so i hope this sells alot, then they remake Leynos ;)
To be honest, I suck at shooters, but I would say this game difficulty is everything but very hard. On the original SNES cartridge I always managed to arrive to the final boss or at least to the final level without bigger problems. If you compare this with most memorable shooters from the 16 bit era like, for example, Thunder Force IV or Ranger X, Cybernator by comparison is easy. This without even mentioning games like Musha, way harder than this. Maybe you still have to learn how to properly use the shiled in this game? It is essential.
I recall playing this on SNES via emulation. This was a fun game actually. What was the newer game released under a different name that really resembles this one?

Ba k in the day , I thought MetalWarrior was the sequel to this
Have you played Hardcore Mecha ? Great game.
I played this as Cybernator on the Wii VC. It was hard!

Glad to see a little retro-flavor coverage from NP!
This game is fantastic, definitely going to pick up the new release.
Now if they could port over Front Mission Gun Hazard, then I'll be extra happy.
Mitsuda's OST in that is the stuff of legends

You probably know by now but I'm pretty sure PlayAsia has a physical copy.

I used to love this game back in SNES days!! I may be getting it now that it's out on Switch
Man I've been craving a 16 bit shooter. Glad I saw this video.
I just realised this got a re-release today! Loved this game as a kid and still play it from time to time.
That games was a cake walk versus Contra on SNES. Once you get to the rocket stage, you can max out everything.
Nice that the Napalm gun can be unlocked from the start but it is a bit of a cheat weapon.

It would've been nice to mention that the original western release by Konami was called Cybernator. Still, solid review.

Dang no rewind feature? that really should be the standard with these retro re-releases like Capcom did with arcade stadium.
It has rewind feature as advertised. It's also shown here at 1:57 in the video.

I played this as cybernator when it first came out. One thing i remember....the game was hard! I had to use codes.

I can't wait
I briefly saw the image in notifications and my brain went "༼;´༎ຶ ༎ຶ༽ARMORED CORE !!!". I'm sad now but the game does look decent.
This is a day one pick up for me on Switch!
Trivia: This game's illustrations and concept art are by Langrisser and Growlanser artist Satoshi Urushihara.
I didn't even know Assault Suit Valken was a game, heh...
I remember being able to get out of the mech.... am i high?
Your thinking of metal warriors
@@Robin-lg6mz Oh yeah...I thought they were the same game... thanks
So this is Cybernator?
I beat this game over a decade ago. I went back and tried it again recently and got absolutely destroyed.
Not paying $25 for a digital release. Where's the physical?
Limited Run just released it :)
I ordered earlier today, but it’s still not the switch version unfortunately…
@@fstim82switch version is now available
@fstim82 Available right now for pre-order.
I had this on SNES back in the day but I could of sworn it had a different title. Was this released under different names?
It was released in the West as Cybernator.
Looks kinda like the mech suits in megaman x. Loved that game
@Noisy Pixels Did you know you can get a super weapon by completing stage 1 by defeating the boss and ignoring the mook?
Did I buy the same title? The only options are volume and the new soundtrack is only in sound test. Everything else is the same as the SNES.....I don't see anything else unless I need to beat it first?
Wanted to buy this game but it seems its not available on Canadian eshop. Don't know why. Most games are... so why not this particular one...
Is this getting a physical release?

Limited Run just released the PO for this game. I grabbed it :)
I am waiting for a Steam release.
i honestly enjoy its predecessor even more, Assault Suits Leynos on Sega Genesis, unforgettable experience, but the graphics did not hold up, so i hope this sells alot, then they remake Leynos ;)
they already made a modern version of Leynos on PS4 and PC in 2016
go check that out
This game ruled
Does anyone know how he has the upgradable napalm in stage 1?
Don't get hit and don't kill anyone but the boss.
I can only beat this game with the Napalm cheat. Excellent game! I still have my CIB Snes copy!

Wait what? this was a brutally hard game? Why do i remember differently 😅
I recall playing this on SNES via emulation. This was a fun game actually. What was the newer game released under a different name that really resembles this one?
Assault Suits Leynos?
I need Target Earth
Why does the game has a different name from Cybernator?
It's the original Japanese name. It's actually part of the Assault Suit series.
Too bad they didn't remake this like leynos.
One of the most memorable releases for the SNES? Yeah, I guess I'll just never take this review site seriously again...
It was. I was there.
Leynos is better.
