A few things...If you don't care about the topic, it's really easy to move on. You don't have to watch it or leave a comment. No one is forcing you. People who don't care about something typically avoid it. Some of you have misinterpreted what I said about not being able to make it through slavery during that time. Let me clarify. I have a tremendous amount of respect for our enslaved ancestors. It takes a lot of courage, strength, and perseverance to endure what they did. I have never been ashamed of my enslaved ancestors. On the contrary, I believe they made me who I am today and are the reason I am not only alive but also why I am able to walk in purpose. All of my accomplishments were made to honor my ancestors. Many of my videos mention that. With that said, some of us should really lose the idea that our ancestors sat around submitting all day. There were plenty who thought like me. They did many things to change their conditions besides just going with what they were told everyday. Some rebelled. Some fought. Some killed. Some were killed. Some simply did the best they could to survive. Also, I'm pretty sure some of y'all are commenting without watching the video lol. It shows. Finally, disrespectful comments will get you blocked. Most of you have been amazing and respectful. I appreciate your comments and support. New videos coming soon. Take care!

It’s absolutely 100% possible Gable had African American DNA inside his genes. How do I know that? Because I do and I’m as white as snow! My family came to America from England in 1630. In 1975 we had our genealogy done. The person doing the genealogy not only presented us with all the paperwork but also a picture book
She found from the 1800s. There was one picture that fascinated us. It was a picture of a young man on his wedding day holding the hand of his beautiful African American bride. Yes people she was black!! The picture was taken in 1884 outside of Independence Missouri. I am a direct descendent of those two people!! I’m more proud of this story than I ever was about my English background!! In the final analysis we’re all related somewhere down the line. We’re all brothers and sisters. Love each other and care for each other.

I've heard that Gable said he did not want the part because he felt that Gone With the Wind was a "woman's movie," and he was considered a very manly actor/man. He preferred to play in westerns and more of the "macho" type movies. But yes, it is true that Hattie McDaniel was nominated for an Oscar, and ultimately won, making her the first African-American to win the award. She was told she could not come to the award ceremony, and yes, Mr. Gable was furious and told them that if she could not come, then he would not come either. They allowed her. If you look it up on TH-cam, you can find her acceptance speech. Sidenote: you watched the movie, so you must know that her skill in acting was head and shoulders above most who have ever portrayed a character in any movie made before or since. She was born to act. Truly one of the very best that ever lived.

According to the "making of" documentary produced by Ted Turner, Gable originally turned down the role because he felt that expectations were too high and he would be criticized whatever he did. The book was an immediate best seller and EVERYONE saw him as Rhett, tho, so Selznick (producer) had to keep trying to get him. He was eventually persuaded to take the part.

I heard Clark Gable had black blood and he was passing. There were a few other top actors in Hollywood who was rumored to be part black.
A lot of people don't know that the racist J. Edgar Hoover was part black. He had a black grandfather, and it was said that he had a close relationship with his black grandfather until his grandfather died when Hoover was a kid.
When Hoover got older, he ended up hating his black blood, especially when he went to an Ivy League college. He tried to join "Skull and Cross" secret society, but they wouldn't allow him entry due to his bloodline being part black.
When he was head of the FBI, the white agents use to call him "the n1993r" behind his back. I even read that Hoover had black relatives living in D.C. when he ran the FBI. He found out that those black relatives were telling people that they were related to him, and he threatened their lives!!!

Word is that a US based male Russan agent who specialized in sexually entrapping US males in intelligence and law enforcement, whilst on an assignment to entrap and set up a lower level FBl agent became aware of Hoover's own sexual peccadilloes and passed it upstairs. Hoover was then blackmailed for the rest of his career and through him the Russans learned of Sen. McCarthy and his bisexual activities and they blackmailed him also. Both were used by the Russans to sow chaos within US politics, intelligence, law enforcement, media and society via the infamous "Communist witch hunts", the "Red Scare" in Hollywood and the hunt for "moles" in US intelligence and law enforcement agencies, whereby the Russans sacrificed many low level assets and a couple big ones but had many deeply embedded highly placed assets remain undetected for decades. It's therefore possible that the Russans also discovered Hoover's racial ambiguity and used it against him, if there were any.

A lot of famous people looked beyond race & just saw the person!
I just heard that Betty White, who sadly passed on NY Eve, had a variety show in 1954.
She hired a young man named Arthur Duncan as a dancer.
Problem was Arthur was a black man, and even though TV was black & white back then, Betty had been strongly encouraged to get rid of him as he couldn't "pass for white."
Betty's answer?? Shevsaid, "Well I am.sorry that you feel that way, but Arthur is a wonderful dancer, so we are keeping him!!"
After that she had him on even more!
The sponsors fathers were ruffled but The Betty White Show was pulling in viewers!
I never knew that until her death! Other celebrities who knew Betty said that she was a person who saw the person, not the color of his or her skin color!
She was an animal activist too, who called for the end of animal testing!
During Steve Harvey's show, "Little Big Shots: Forever Young," Steve got Arthur on his show to talk about the best woman he ever knew.
He told Steve that was Betty White! She had decided that if he was going, she would be going too! So she could have been cancelled, just for keeping him on the show!!
Steve had a surprise for Arthur; he had Betty White there!! Arthur sang & danced at age 83!! Betty was smiling from ear to ear!!
She also was probably the first WOMAN to stand up against the, mostly male producers & sponsors run by men!!
There are videos of them on you tube, tyoe:
Betty White Arthur Duncan Steve Harvey!!
Children come into this world pure. They do not show racism, antisemitism, sexism, unless they learned it from those around them. Betty's parents had to be very special people!!

As a southerner, I've heard about Melungeons all my life. I believe Clark Gable may have had some Melungeon ancestors, just like one of our home town favorites, Elvis. Both are incredibly beautiful men, no matter what quirk of DNA produced that combination of features. There is something similiar about their eyes. Elvis looked more like his mother than his father so that DNA came through her. There is a book by a woman who traced her ancestry to her Melungeon roots titled (I think) "Climbing my Family Tree." I read it several years ago so I've unfortunately forgotten the author's name. It has a great and interesting explanation of the myths and truths about Melungeons and her journey to find that part of her family.

I recently got my ancestry dna test results in and I was surprised. So I always identified as being Caucasian with some native American ancestry because thats what I was told and was raised as. Well I got my results in and im 25% Scandinavian, 30% English, 21% native american, 10% asian,9% papuan, 5% African Cameroon/bantu people. So I was pleasantly surprised to find all the different ethnicities in my results. I was also shocked at the higher native american percentage yet amazed about the papuan from new Guinea which are considered non African black / Oceania I've watched a million dna results and never seen papuan show up. So I'm just a mixture of everything it seems. I'll also say I'm very happy about having all these awesome ethnicities in my dna but won't be trying to appropriate a culture that I have no idea about like so many of these folks do (whoa vicky for starters) ill just proudly say that I have ancestors of these many different and unique cultures and I will be very interested in learning more about them. @@LifewithDrTrishVarner yeah blew my mind! Like how on earth did I get papuan? I've never seen or heard of anyone else getting that in their results. I sort of think since they are considered black that maybe they could have been brought over as slaves as well cause thats the only thing that would make sense because I'm from a very rural place in Kentucky and about all my family have been born and raised here at least back 5 or 6 generations and I just couldn't see a papuan person coming here willingly tbh. I also have another theory that perhaps they passed as native american and traveled here some how but unfortunately id say my first idea was right. Sadly all my elder relatives that may have a explanation have passed on. Another thing although I certainly hate to admit it is a few of the elders were pretty bigoted so they may not know and if they did they'd probably deny it especially my paternal grandma because her people were very racist and some were even members of a terrible organization (her great grandfather and grandfather) that's a part of my history i could do without even knowing. Funny thing is I've always been fairly ethnicly ambiguous and so is everyone on my paternal grandfathers side. I get more fair in the winter but I've gotten asked if I were asia, latina, Samoan, or native american so I guess now I can say I come from all the above with the exception of latina and somoan lol. I was definitely pleasantly surprised with my diverse results.

I do not believe that he is Black either, though it would be lovely if he was. Every White liberal as you and I understand does not need to be Black, just decent. There were several in Hollywood throughout the years, who worked tirelessly for the equal treatment of Blacks in that industry. I agree, his losing his mom so early shaped his experiences. He probably wasn't treated well and felt left out quite a bit. He was a close friend of Hattie MCDaniel's and he attended her racially mixed parties at her famous mansion in California. They were lavish and attended by: Bing Crosby, and Esther Williams to name a couple. Fun fact Hattie McDaniel was the first Black to win an Oscar and she did it for that movie. When she died in 1952 she requested that it be donated to Howard University, but it's been missing since the 1970's the Academy Board refuse to replace it per Her great nephew. My sister-in-law recently took a DNA test and found out her father’s parents were of African ancestry. It was not evident from anyone’s appearance. Her father is deceased now but her whole life, she knew nothing about her grandparents. He would not talk about them and never visited them. She never even knew their full names. She was understandably surprised to learn this but still sad she never knew her grandparents.

I must say that I can't blame folks for passing. Look at how bad we were treated. I love this country, but we cannot ignore it's shameful past. I do not however, condone making any one race feel ashamed for being that race. I also will not punish anyone for crimes committed by their ancestors...... that is unless they are still practicing such behavior.

Comic Broadway star, Carol Channing was told by her mother that Ms. Channing's father was of mixed African American and European parentage, which meant her grandmother was black. She didn't mention that publicly until a couple of years before her death.

At 77 yrs of age, I’m a live to tell you it really doesn’t matter. I remember the wife of a well known Evangelist saying, in time America would be a melting pot and the Race would all be the Golden Race. Being of fair skin with freckles, sound good to me. And
I grew up right on the border separating white/black, I loved them as did my father. Hitched a ride on
Patrons wagon ever chance I got.
Years later ran across one of his family members & discovered, most of his children had college educations
Lawyers, Doctors made their mark on society & assets to this country.
God bless the races, we are all His children. He’s returning soon, we all
need to get ready. Come LORD Come

Since I was neither born in the United States nor am I black, I don't think I relate to your experience at all. I lived my first 18 years of life in a Central American country where there was no distinction made by the color of one's skin. We had a Melting Pot of people in my country. Asians, Arabs, Jews, American and Latin American all survived together in my country. It wasn't until I came to this country in 1961 that I was introduced to the word "segregation". I learned the hard way. In my country, when the bus came to get us for school, I ALWAYS SAT IN THE BACK!!! Not because I was black or that it had something to do with the color of my skin; but that it was the most fun place to sit; especially when the bus hit a bump!!! I saw Gone WIth The Wind. I READ Gone with the Wind. There were some differences between the two. The only way I related to the slaves in the picture was through feelings. I felt the sadness and the curelty with which they were treated; but, what bothered me most is that the motioin picture didn't have a SOLUTION FOR THAT PROBLEM and so, it stuck with me. I could not permit any black person who happened to be employed by my Southerns guests wait on me or treat me as if I were royalty. I didn't like it. And I vowed then and there never to treat anyone of any color different from how I wanted to be treated. Today, I am 79 years old and the division is not only between blacks and whites; but between blacks and blacks. Black children being killed in drive-by shootings (mostly in Chicago)! I pray every day that there will be a miracle and all of Martin Luther Kng's wishes come true!

I think his swarthy looks probably came from his Irish heritage. There were an group of Irish called the Black Irish, who had swarthy complexions and black hair. I don’t know if they were descendants of what group that migrated to Ireland, but an Irish native told me this bit of history. I have always told my former students that “Knowledge Is Power”; and that the power to know is as limitless as you make it.

William Clark Gable was born on February 1, 1901, in Cadiz, Ohio, to William Henry "Will" Gable (1870-1948), an oil-well driller, and his wife Adeline (née Hershelman). His father was a Protestant and his mother a Catholic. Gable was named William after his father, but he was almost always called Clark, and had Belgian and German ancestry, not African-American ancestry. Clark spent a lot of time outdoors, both in his youth and later as a film star, hence his dark tan, not unlike some other Hollywood actors such as George Hamilton, Cary Grant, Burt Reynolds, Bo Derek or Farrah Fawcett. They all had dark tans and they were all white.

Dear Dr. Trisha Varner, what a wonderful program you have created. I love hearing about peoples family trees and what it exposes. I appreciate your time and effort put into the GREAT production! I'm new to the program and glad I found it! I have come to realize that nothing is as it appears! Great job on Carol Channing!!
About Clark Cable, this is news to me that Gable was considered black, but I wouldn't care. He was my Mom's time. After hearing your program I am in the camp that his "Dad" wasn't his Dad! I see NO resemblance between the two and his Mom certainly did not contribute to Clark being "tall, dark and handsome".
Thank you, Dr. Varner, for posting this adventure!

My mom’s family was white-passing in the South, so I’ve experienced all the things you’re saying about family history and records. In my case, the family story was that they were Native American and not African-descended, to explain why they were so dark. But with DNA tests of many cousins on that family lines shows that we all have at least some African DNA, and no one except for me actually has any Native American, but that’s from my dad’s side.
