In my 40+ years of cruising and living aboard, I find that the couples who take their time and consider the wishes of their spouses are the successful cruisers. Continue to take your time and don't be afraid to turn back or alter course for comfort.
The first DIY section was pretty good but then Ava came into the picture and totally stole the show, brilliant and enthusiastic tour guide for Brest , thanks so much for making the effort.
I have to admit that Ava's walks are getting to be an addictive part of the channel. From the best DIY boat channel to a fantastic travel/DIY channel it is one of the best on TH-cam.
Vacuum seal a new rudder with stainless conductors and pressure sensors to zap the orcas like the invisible fence does to dogs. Great product idea, and would put a negative stimuli with the rudder playing... actually rereading that it sounds cruel. Love your content man!
Well, you have nothing to worry about when it comes to your ability to do other than DIY, the way you work together on the walks and sharing the history is great, keep it up, you are doing great!
It's funny hearing Ava immediately shot down the cold shower. I had a similar experience years ago. I took a woman on a surf date. (We were both surfers already.) We took my VW van that I had built this beautiful kitchen and shower unit for. Figured maple, maple cutting board, stove, and 20 gallons of high pressure water to wash all the salt off after our surf. I was quite proud of it. When it finally came time to rinse off she looked me dead in the eyes like I had just kicked a kitten and said "It's not hot water?!?" Years later when I sold that unit, tore out the entire interior and built out a full camper interior in its place, I made sure to install a hot water heater. And you know what, she was right. Totally worth it.
If the screws ever work loose from the flange of the shower doohickey, you could drill/fill/drill the hole and use "stove bolts" as we call them in the U.S. You should be able to find the size head and diameter and length you want in stainless and use a washer on the inside with the nut. Things are really looking great, Mads!
Wow, guys this is great content! IMHO we finally see you two interact, tease, laugh and not be so propper. Video feels genuine and a lot less scripted. Great stuff!
Regarding lack of templating, a trick I learned recently: Bring the thing and a tape measure to a photocopier. Make a photocopy of the tape measure held against the glass. Measure outcome with tape measure. If the marks line up well enough that you can correct the results, photocopy the item you need a template for. If they're too far off, find another photocopier. Tape photocopy in place and mark up adjustment if necessary.
I have to say, you two are just awesome! The channel has really grown into something special and we are really enjoying the variety between sailing and DIY/fixing. -Jen & Rob
You will love Starlink. I installed it on my Pearson 419 Center Cockpit Ketch (totally electric boat - totally electric). The speed at anchor is fantastic! BTW, I love your channel and you have given me so much great advice on my refit journey - thank you...
Loved the banter between you both, a really welcome turn from the glorious sanding type of videos over to really travelling ones! Please stay like that! Safe travels! 👍👍👍
Really enjoy your channel. It’s OK to hear background noise when you are touring cities because it helps the vacation mode in my brain. Love how you guys love each other.
I've recently completed a Northbound trip from Lagos to Lymington. We were visited by a small group of Orcas at the Southern end. They rammed the portside of the boat and had a nibble at the rudder. Thankfully nothing else. Amongst them was a mother and calf so I definitely don't recommend poking them with a boathook as they may retaliate. Technique was to stop the boat, disengage the autopilot to free up the rudder and then go astern. Turning off the sounder might also help to pay less attention. Good luck if you get a visit mid-Biscay, it's a long way to a port.
10:18 Pro-tip on the solar fan: based on my own personal experience NEVER have the fan bringing air INTO the head while said head is in use. This will pressurise the head, forcing the foul miasma of defecation into you cabin, there by earning the ire of any occupants. (Brought to you buy the guy who almost gassed his partner in their motorhome...)
We have found that keeping the panels clean is super important to maintain their power output. My habit is to clean them first thing in the morning while there is still a.lot of free dew moisture on the surface of the boat. With a squeegee it is plenty of water to get them back up to maximum output unless Mr. Seagull has left us a sample of his parented white one-coat marine.grade paint. Then I use a spray mister to work on it a bit which is usually enough to get it clean without wasting too much precious water from our tanks. Alas, there is no watermaker for us yet even after a few years of cruising so all the H2O we use is usually hauled in jugs via the dinghy from shore.
Nice episode Mads and Ava. Vent fans in the head will save marriages, friendships and family relations. Very good thinking Mads. As to the exterior shower, hot water will make your day when you need it. Take care and thank you Ava for the garden tours.
One of the only sailing channels I watch! great to follow your hard work and evolution and now being able to enjoy the cruising life and the fine toilets of Brest! good going guys!
Hold on, stop the presses!! No glorious sanding? I cant take it!! Great you made it with your rudder intact! Thanks for another great video...Oh, I am thinking that the drill hole clean up may qualify as sanding... Ok, I will remain a Partron.
Brest is a beautiful place to explore!! I really enjoyed the walk through the town. Mad's that vent is gonna come in a treat... An the deck Shower also will be perfect for everything!!
If you are ever in the Hampton Roads area there is a similar monument in Newport News. It commemorates the location where large numbers of US troops embarked for Europe during WW1. It has a triumphal arch and an everburning flame.
As you can see at 5:25 on the video, the cold tube has blue piping around it and the hot has red piping. Assume the mix is the one without piping (thin colored spiral around the tube)
I couldn’t LIVE without an outside shower while on the sailboat. In the Islands. After swimming in the morning, it was wonderful to just wash our hair (using enviro correct shampoo)!. Avoiding the head after the guy’s morning coffee was a blessing.
Loving the episodes more and more every time. The mix in this episode of DIY and a lovely walk through Brest. I agree with Ryan just being in Brest the comedic opportunities, just kidding, very well done I can’t wait til next week, keep it up you’re doing great! ❤
i had one of those on my old boat and it made a great difference you should like it. thanks for sharing the update and please have a great week ahead and i will be seeing you folks on next Sunday video
The one thing I always find amazing in your videos is how easily you cut holes or drill in your boat to install stuff. I would go agonize for weeks to cut / don't cut
Another Brilliant video, really enjoying following your adventures and boat work. On the cockpit shower make sure you always turn it off at tap and not just head as they are renowned for dripping and emptying your water tank into the bilges! Enjoy France, we had two months sailing there this summer, lovely area and fantastic food!
Your videos are always so enjoyable and educational. Even when they are not on the boat. Also the part with the kitty put such a good smile on your face. Alan
Mads, in earlier videos after cutting holes in the deck you scraped out the balsa around the edge and filled with thickened epoxy, a variant on the drill/fill/drill, did you not do it this time with the vent?
I’d recommend you to replace that thread tape with Loctite 55. It’s easier, less windings, and not too important how you follow the threads. It has a tacky surface and just seals much better.
I have been watching your videos for years and I look forward to them every Sunday. But I do have one little gripe on this one, I was hoping to get to see inside some of the great places you filmed outside of, I will never get to see them in person so it would have been nice to live vicariously through you. As always, Thank you for your content.
I have some solar vents on my boat like the one you installed in this video. I've found that they are subject to leaking when the water comes sideways (driving rain or waves over the deck). I bought some Plastimo Dorade vents to replace them. I haven't done the job yet, but I plugged the sides of the solar vents with butyl tape - ugly but stops the drips - until I can get the Dorades installed. They don't have fans, but if I find I need more airflow, I figure I can place a fan underneath.
Concerning the Orca situation, there is a documentation back in the 70'S when Dougal Robertson and family [6 soul's] were attacked and sunk by Killer Whales off the Galapagos' islands in a wooden Schooner, they bailed into the life raft, which didn't hold up too well, after which the 8 to 10 Dinghy was to keep them alive for over 30 day's, he wrote a book titled Survive the savage sea, a must read if obtainable AND later wrote Sea Survival, without doubt the BEST treaties on how to survive a ship wreck, it's publication was for sailors to be used if needed, such as water proof pages, ocean current's and wind, how to butcher sea life to survive along with collecting water, ect. Google his name, a most informative read. Love your channel, as a side note, i noticed how you were applying thread tape, best to wind the tape clock wise, i.e. the direction of tightening the fitting, helps keep the tape tight, instead of the other direction, hopefully we will meet when you sail to California, where i am at. Fair Winds.
I really Like Ava's historic tours of the towns that you visit. I think she should do a more in depth tours. Your maintenance and refurbishing videos are great but, a little more Ava please. Don't be afraid of her usurping your position🤣on the internet⛵
I did not notice any Audio problems during the walking tour. But you did get me excited about the views from the cable car and then the vlog ended - oh well Cheers ⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵
Nice work, but a couple of questions; Solar toilet fan, hole cut in cabin top, no epoxy to seal the core?..... no sanding required? was it really that simple?
I chose to make gorgeous Camaret sur Mer, just outside Rade de Brest, my official address, becoming French resident 4 years ago, as FT liveaboard. So I know Brest v well. Recommend the great choice of little restaurants, just east of Chateaux Marina, by the quayside, for lunchtime 'deals', Formule. There are endless choice of Boulangerie. I installed 2 of those Marinco solar fans and within a season, they became very, very loud, in fact we have to turn them off at night to be able to sleep. Very disappointed given they were not cheap. Hopefully you have better luck
I'm with Eva on the wild animals, and thoroughly enjoyed this video. Balance between doing and seeing is great. Thank you.

"Tonnerre de Brest" like said Captain Haddock :) Welcome in France ;)
Always a pleasure to see your adventures ;)
Cheers from Belgium
Doodad indeed! Mads, your ingenuity to fix the brand new broken/non-installation instructions is impressive! Thank you for the video.
No audio issues that I can tell. Professional as usual.
I am liking the mix of DIY and travel / sailing - the transition to more of a sailing channel is working well.

Making your own template out of tape. Genius.
I envy your problem solving skills. Template from tape: genius!!!!!
So many years spent repairing holes and closing gaps, and now if feels like every week you're adding a new one ;p
How you're not a million subs is bewildering.
Sailing and history...you're both my soul-mates
Really dug the tour of Brest! Very cool!
You will love Starlink. I installed it on my Pearson 419 Center Cockpit Ketch (totally electric boat - totally electric). The speed at anchor is fantastic! BTW, I love your channel and you have given me so much great advice on my refit journey - thank you...

it's great to see you so happy
"We have lots of diy here. But,wait- there is more!" Culture I didn't know I needed is an added bonus, superb🌞🇧🇻
Pretty dang spiffy water dohicky thingy mabob Mads...👍👍🚿⛵💚
It's extremely fun to watch Ava get her "travel geek" on!! 🤣🤣🤣
I've recently completed a Northbound trip from Lagos to Lymington. We were visited by a small group of Orcas at the Southern end. They rammed the portside of the boat and had a nibble at the rudder. I'm with Ava on the mixer shower... wind chill can freeze you in an instance when it's cooler. Useful installation with the solar panels nearby.

Your new cockpit shower looks pretty dang spiffy, indeed. Quite lovely! (Brest is a beautiful town. Thanks for the tour!) 💕💕💕💕💕
Great template hack.... genius Mads ... genius 🤓.
Great video says an old man from the sea!
Nice episode Mads and Ava. Vent fans in the head will save marriages, friendships and family relations. Very good thinking Mads. As to the exterior shower, hot water will make your day when you need it. Take care and thank you Ava for the garden tours.
I must commend Mads, He said Brest a bunch of times and never once added in a pun. You, sir have more control than I do.
Ha Ha, i was thinking the same and then he was patting a pussy ;)
Ava! I like your historical guiding tours🤗
Glad you went for both warm and cool water. Even in the Bahamas, I really appreciated warm water after a long dive.
This is how I finish my weekend. Thanks guys.
Those shutter dogs are fantastic, thanks for catching a photo of them for us. Charles

Brest is a beautiful place to explore!! I really enjoyed the walk through the town.
Mad's that vent is gonna come in a treat... An the deck Shower also will be perfect for everything!!
Another great episode!
8:46 - I would probably wire the fan with an auxiliary 3 way switch to switch it from off to solar to battery power. 🤔
Hi, another very interesting video , make a good team , fair winds and catch you on the next one .

Hi I learn so much From your DIY projects , But I really enjoy EVA's travel and tours commentary You Two rock !!!

Really enjoyed the music during your little hike around town... as always enjoyed the project part as well...John and Penny... Ontario, Canada
Thanks
i had one of those on my old boat and it made a great difference you should like it. thanks for sharing the update and please have a great week ahead and i will be seeing you folks on next Sunday video
Very much enjoying the direction your channel is going, tours, diy etc. Vicarious living at its best.
It is a beautiful place. Love the history
Nice episode, thanks.
great fix using tape to form the cut out for the shower
The one thing I always find amazing in your videos is how easily you cut holes or drill in your boat to install stuff. I would go agonize for weeks to cut / don't cut

Love the tours and history facts! The dialog is so good and well written/delivered.
Your videos are always so enjoyable and educational. Even when they are not on the boat. Also the part with the kitty put such a good smile on your face. Alan
See you👍🏽
That solar powered fan you installed looks like you added R2D2 to your X Wing Fighter. A big win if you ask me.
Fantastic throughout, visually fun and interesting. Cant wait to see what's next!
I would probably replace the plastic t piece with brass or stainless especially on the hot side as most plastics don't last too well with hot water.
Mads, in earlier videos after cutting holes in the deck you scraped out the balsa around the edge and filled with thickened epoxy, a variant on the drill/fill/drill, did you not do it this time with the vent?
Brest was a UBoat base during WWII, that's why it was so heavily bombed.. The sub pins are still there.
You could install a few of those Nature Valley bars inside the technical compartment as passive dehumidification.
I’d recommend you to replace that thread tape with Loctite 55. It’s easier, less windings, and not too important how you follow the threads. It has a tacky surface and just seals much better.
I liked the tour.
Looking forward to your starlink install. I'm coming up on a similar job.
Bayonne and Biarritz and San Sebastian are all worth a visit if you have the time.
What, no national maritime museum? Nah it's fine. The shower installation was satisfying enough. Nice to see the adventure really starting.
I love this Video Guys. You guys seem to be having so much fun in Brest. Man your leg muscles atrophied fast on that passage :)
The sound was perfect. Have a great trip and everything is going to be fine. 😊👌💪
Ava, me too, stone buildings, arches marinated in lush vegetation!
I hope Spain is going well. It is a lot of fun tracking Athena on the Garmin website. Thanks for another great video. Sea Yoo!
It's nothing short of amazing! The food is so good! I'm struggling to find a stainless guy in A Coruna but other than that it's perfect here :)
I'm watching Sail Life from an RV on Starlink. It's pretty badass except during heavy rain.
Audio seemed fine> Thanks for another interesting video!!
Come to Lorient. It is great and Marina is about 25 euro a night.
Hej mads du min ynglings youtuber af alle har set med længe nu håber en dag møde dig i en fremmed havn arthene ser fantastisk ud :)
You should’ve looked at the whale version it has the mixer in the head of the sprayer and takes a 2” hole saw and sticks out about and 1” or less

I keep coming back to those basics videos because I STILL don't know how to properly use the software. I'm gonna cry

Cats. What's not to like.
Cat box in the Salon. What's not to like. ;)
Is there a reason you wanted such a big hole.. as you just need to run the 2 hoses through the hull? Luv ya vlog. Luv life!!!

I installed 2 of those Marinco solar fans and within a season, they became very, very loud, in fact we have to turn them off at night to be able to sleep. Very disappointed given they were not cheap. Hopefully you have better luck
