Going along with why he aligned himself with the empire, it's also one of those scenarios where he's too far into being a sith, that it'd be impossible to go back. Even if he wanted to, he'd be mercilessly hunted by the empire and Palpatine almost for certain knowing wherever he went. That and even if he went to the rebellion he would on a constant basis be mistrusted and probably have assassination attempts on him more than when he was in the empire.
I've always thought one of the many terrible things Vader would have had to swallow was losing his father figure, the seemingly kindly Palpatine, to Sidious, who he knew didn't give a damn about him and had been manipulating him and lying to him since he was ten years old. Vader had lost everything, including a cherished illusion.
You left out a small fact, when ever the emperor felt that Vader failed him in some way, he would call him by his first name, Anakin. He knew it would anger Vader because Vader loathed everything that Anakin was and how he ultimately failed.
Source dude? I’ve read pretty much every comic/book and I don’t think he did this once. Actually now that I think about, Sidious would continuously referred to Anakin as an entirely separate entity than Vader. He even did this in the movies bro. Careful using the word fact. A lot of TH-camrs aren’t careful either.
I’ve read a lot of stories about Sith (Bane, Malik, Plagis, etc.). Vader doesn’t act like a typical sith. He acts like someone who’s staying occupied with the sith until he dies. All Sith usually want to take over, and are highly motivated towards domination. Vader seems resigned to existing till he dies. And while Vader is badly injured probably the most out of all Sith, it seems like other Sith become maimed and shrug it off because power is all they care about. Maybe Palpatine is disappointed with that as well. Basically, Palpatine is dealing with a permanent EMO apprentice.
If Vader never got injured and never put in the suit he most likely would have been able to crush Palpatine like a bug BUT because his limbs were gone, body badly burned beyond repair and because he was put in that suit he couldn't overcome Palps. George Lucas even said that after Vader was put in the suit he was only at 80% of his power.
Sidious was born to be a Sith. Anakin was born to be a Jedi. Have the former be the latter's master and this is the kind of dysfunctional relationship that ensues :D
This video was really good to see, and I'm glad somebody put these Sith Lords' relationships in a proper real-world context. Please do more about how the relationships between other characters present themselves, and also, what can we learn from them. ✊
Friendships among the Sith were rare, but they did exist. No, there was no real affection, but there was mutual respect and they would value each other's existence (at least until it was time for one to kill the other for power or position.
I think there are times where Sideous is genuinely proud of Vader as a master. Specifically when he sees Vader fight to overcome his injuries during the comic run shortly after his defeat on Mustafar, he offered Vader the chance to rule over any planet of his choice. And he does take opportunities to instruct Vader in the ways of the dark side, which means he values Vader as a possible successor in some form. Honestly, Vader being 80% as powerful as Sideous still makes him extremely impressive and in the top tiers of the most powerful Sith lords. I think what made Sideous want to replace Vader at all was the fact that he was such a brute in his approach to everything- he lacked finesse for any situation outside of lightsaber combat. He was unstable, not well suited to tasks outside of destruction. Even when Vader had the opportunity to chose a planet to rule, he chose Mustafar which had no people to govern and symbolized his inability to let go of his past. The Sith empire that was in the making for 1000s of years would surely be squandered by someone as tactless and disinterested as Vader, hence why Sideous feared for his legacy and decided he would simply rule forever. He realized that nobody would ever be powerful enough to replace Darth Vader, much less himself (until it turned out the Skywalker children survived).
I think Palpatine was dropping nuggets of teaching just enough to string Vader along and lull him into remaining under his thumb. Which is something Sidious learned from his own master.
I may not be wise within the force, but I believe that ole Palpatine used the word "friend" to remind Vader of the time he was Anakin? Because didn't Obi-Wan often call Anakin "old friend" or "brother" so wouldn't it be a constant reminder of Anakin's past and how he lost everything because he trusted Palpatine.
You know what? Palpatine usually greets you with a smile and uses words like friend. But say you accidentally step on his new Air Jordans and say “sorry”, he’ll say “it’s quite all right” with a smile, then walk into the next room and tell his lackey to peel your skin off of you while you’re still alive. I think he only shows anger when it gets serious.
@@apok1980 This is true, but if you really pay attention to Palpatine and Anakin's relationship until he becomes Vader. Palpatine basically knows how Anakin reacts before he'll react from killing the sand people and Palpatine encouraging that he did the right thing. To the visions of Padme death so when it came time for pushing Anakin to the dark side it was kind of like "you knew this whole time I was secretly a sith lord and you still picked me over your light." Those small words alone probably sends Vader into moments of doubt within himself and he still feels like that little boy Anakin Skywalker instead of his own man.
The relationship between Vader and Sidious was always so dramatic and very complex and I love it. I love the complexity of their chemistry and just when I thought I had figured it out, something else comes out of left field and I there will be more to see.😇👍👍👍
I loved this video. It also shows why it took Luke to snap Anakin out of his Vader persona. Vader felt like he had nothing, and that no one liked him. Obi-Wan, Yoda, and the Jedi, in general, abandoned him, so Anakin sucked up the abuse to stay with his abuser. Here comes Luke to show Anakin that he wasn't alone and there was good in the universe. When Anakin realized this, Vader was vanquished and Anakin came back. I blame the Jedi order too. They treated Anakin like crap, and it made him distrust the Jedi. Palpatine came in and manipulated Anakin over to the dark side. If the Jedi order hadn't run Ahsoka out, and if they had trusted Anakin, he may not have turned to the Dark side for a while. The Jedi were too dogmatic in their views of light and dark. Good and evil. Palpatine learned both sides and used the Jedi's weaknesses be their downfall. People think Star Wars is anti-passion, anger, and intensity. No, it's showing how being dogmatic about one side isn't good. The Jedi refused to learn anything about the Darkside and demonized those who wanted to understand the dark side. Palpatine's downfall was when he looked at the light side as weak. Palpatine was at his most dangerous when he was curious about both sides of the force. He thought once the light side was driven out of someone, that they couldn't be turned back. He was wrong. Sorry, I went off-topic a little, but I was trying to explain how Anakin got into that state of mind. How he let an awful person control, abuse, and use him. Palpatine feared Anakin at first, that's why he didn't want Anakin at full strength. Anakin would've easily overthrown him, so Palpatine had to make sure that Anakin couldn't reach his full potential. So, Palpatine abused Vader physically and mentally. He didn't want Anakin to ever reach his full potential.
Great analysis. By refusing to acknowledge Anakin's human side and emotions the Jedi blinded themselves from the truth and effectively sent him to Palpatine with a ribbon on

As Sidious himself said in the Darth Plagueis novel, "No true Sith can ever really care about another. This has always been known." He sees Vader as merely another pawn to move on his game board, one to take orders, give orders on his behalf, and do his bidding.
I think they reason Palpatine called him "friend" is a cruel reminder that the power of his sociopathic manipulation of Vader was stronger then Anakin/Vader himself! "Friend" was a cruel reminder that Vader was a blunt instrument, and will never have this unique ability, and this coupled with Vader knowing he could never overpower Sidious, kept Vader subservient and very unlikely to attempt to overthrow the Emperor. A subconscious way to keep Vader mentally defeated, fearful and subservient forever.
Honestly, think about it. If Darth Vader decided to run away after the events of The Revenge of the Sith, where would he go as a cyborg? What would he do for the rest of his life? How would he be able to hide from Darth Sidious, and how many years (if any) would he be able to successful do so until he gets caught? Victims of abuse have many places to go, even if they do not see the where those places are. However, Darth Vader absolutely had nowhere to go. He lost everything from his previous life. Everything, except Darth Sidious.
I don't know if Anakin is the best example of Palpatine being a master manipulator. Granted, he did manipulate him for decades. However, the only reason any of that paid off was that Anakin suddenly forgot his brain and became gullible enough to believe that killing children would somehow save Padme's life. That's a pretty huge gamble to bet your life on.
It's true after Anakin lead himself in that suit for being to smug, and he knew it then all Darth Vader had was Palpatine and the relationship, was pretty strand for years, it got down right beyod sawer when Vader learn he was soully responsible, for Padme's death and Vader was just chomping at the bit to get ride of Palpatine, but as all know it wouldn't go down as Vader would plan.
So it's the same logic as being 'jumped' into a gang. The more Palpatine tries to replace Vader, the more Vader fights to remain at Palpatine's side. Consciously, it's to spite Palpatine by refusing to disappear, but subconsciously, it's the sunken cost fallacy. The harder he fights to remain at Palpatine's side, the more he needs all that fighting to have been for something.
Palpatine could call Vader "Prag" or "Bitch" Vader would probably prefer them to "Friend" the way Palpatine says it. At least it would be more accurate if he did call him "Prag" or "Bitch"
I think "friend" is Palpatine's favorite word of mockery. The idea that he would ever consider anyone a friend or even the implication that he would be capable of friendship, must be hilarious to him. The next one after that is "peace".
Palatine wasn't an ordinary sith. If you read related books about palpatine and Count Dooku's relationship was also similar. Once Palatine Warned Dooku for Anakin. But Dooku was sure he could beat Anakin. Palpatines aspect is being friends with his apprentice. Not like traditional sith-apprentice relationship "being body of the power and crawling apprentice for power" That's why he could survive for long time comparing other sith Lords...
I think this is very interesting, it's obvious their courteous words to one another is just a thinly veiled disguise for the animosity they hold. Although there is a part of me that wonders about sidious in particular. Given how immersed he is in the darkness and how he has never tasted real friendship, I wonder if on some level this is genuinely his twisted idea of friendship. It's toxic, cruel and both suffer from it, but that to the sith that is what they call good.
i even noticed this when their was only 6 movies out both vader and sidious had a terrible friendship i knew this right away i even noticed this before disney even bought star wars
This way of viewing Sidious as Vader’s abuser gives new insight into why he says to Luke on Bespin: “…you can destroy the Emperor.” Not because Vader wants to lure Luke per se, but because Vader wants Sidious dead but cannot accomplish it himself.
I think that this relationship is interesting to those of us who have experienced any form of psychological abuse. So many reminders pop up in the way that Sidious speaks to Vader or how Vader speaks with Galen Marek, for instance.
At what point in time did Vader declare he only just the Sith because the Jedi had fallen, etc. Because everything on film or in the tv series says Anakin turned before Order 66 and he was a part of it. The moment he took off Mace's hand, he joined Sidious. So when was this written, before or after Ep 3? There's too much retconning in Star Wars.
Different things. He saved Palpatine from Mace in order to save Padme. He then committed himself to the Sith afterwards cos Padme died anyway and the Jedi Order was gone.
He refers to a lot of people as "friend", He even called Yoda his little green friend. I figure someone would get triggered if he called Vader, "my big black friend" 😂
One question: Did vader call the emperor "my master" in IV V VI more referring to the apprentice-master relationship or more of a "master-slave" relationship? Cuz when I was watching IV V VI, their relationship didn't give me a "master-apprentice" vibe at all???
I don't know how vader missed what demon he was dealing with. The clones, tricking the jedi, claiming to be able to save padme with no real effort to do so, not even putting her in a safe place which at the very least would have put her in hostage situations to make vader follow orders, nothing. Dooku, maul, and any other apprentice that anybody could see were just pawns.. ..vader was not an idiot. He knew what it all was and did it any way. He wasn't tricked.
That's actually an interesting way to insult someone by using a word that would be a compliment in any other context. I might start doing this to people I don't like
Stupendous wave I am wondering if you can make a video going over the relationship of Darth bane and his apprentice Darth Zana because unlike Darth Vader and emperor, Palpa teen the relationship between Darth, Ben and Darth, Zana because their relationship seems more like brother and sister, or a teacher and a student because Ben could not help Xena learn Sith magic
I feel like it really isn't intended to be an insult when he calls him friend. I think he knows Vader hates him and is somewhat cautious with him at times when he thinks he could go rogue on him. Even if Sidious can beat Vader, he still needs an apprentice and doesn't want Vader to run off or die trying to kill him.
Sidious played the friendship card just to manipulate Vader, but thanks to the love of of his son Luke, Vader snapped out of it, and over threw his evil master, which brings up, be careful of the friends you make.
Well spoken. Both a backhanded compliment as Palpatine was all Vader had left and a way to remind Vader of the atrocities he did. Vader at this point believed he lost everything his wife his brother his friends his children who would ever want him after all the things he did. Palpatine knew Vader was half of what he was after his fight with Obi-Wan on Mustafar. Palpatine still needed Vader as a tool to enforce his will now that he ruled the galaxy Vader was nothing more than a means to his own end. Which brings me to this issue using Anakin manipulating him for years to turn him to the dark side using him as just a tool to get what he wanted and letting him suffer so much how is what Palpatine did any different than Qui-Gon’s plans? I always have a hard time believing the whole ‘Qui-Gon is Anakin’s father figure and would have kept him from falling to the dark side’. Like Palpatine Qui-Gon saw Anakin’s potential he saw Anakin as a means to an end for Palpatine it was to see his empire come true for Qui-Gon it was so the Chosen One prophecy would come true. Palpatine let Vader go through pain and suffering to get where he needed him to be as Darth Vader and Qui-Gon who was able to reach out and commune with Obi-Wan and Yoda from beyond the grave yet made no effort to do the same for Anakin let Anakin fall and become Darth Vader so he can ‘destroy the sith’ in Return of the Jedi. Maybe it was the ‘will of the force’ for it to happen but all that shows is Qui-Gon was no better or different that Darth Sidious in how he saw Anakin.
They were barely allies. Palpatine would regularly send people off to kill Vader, saying they could become Palpatine's new apprentice if they did so. And at the same time Vader tries to get Luke's help to kill Palpatine and replace him. They hated each other but we're stuck in a relationship of co-dependency until one of them got the other killed.
Actually although Sidious generally cared little about his apprentices or anyone for that matter, he did have a profound respect and appreciation for Vader, as evidenced by the way he gives Vader full command of the Imperial military alongside Tarkin. Even going as far as to give him a planet and whatever he desired, within reason of course. But this could be due to the fact that literally there would never be anyone to become his apprentice that is more powerful than Vader. Vader is the chosen one after all
His problem was in no longer having self-worth, that died with Anakin, and he hated himself far more than anyone else, including Palps. I have/had people in my life that have many faces, and I fix the situation by playing-up the "friend" part. I reward them when they DO act like friends, but ignore them when they're cold, and even insult or sabotage them when they attempt to talk down to me. It would have been tough for Vader, but what did he have to lose? His life that he hated? Eventually Sidious would have treated him as more of an equal, seeing Vader as a worthwhile colleague, or he would have killed him, either way Vader's situation would have improved and the abuse would have stopped.
Makes sense he'd hate being called a friend.
Sidious is mocking the term by using it in a condensing way to remind Vader how foolish he was to trust him at all.

Palpatine I'm not your guy buddy
He exchanged his friends for a monster.
The way I see it is Vader never care about what and who I think he just care about what he doing and what in front of him
I think Palpatine was upset that he couldn't get laid one more time before becoming Darth Syphilis due to Anakin taking his time choosing sides
Well, he WAS married to Natalie Portman...
Fascinating ! I have always wondered this. Now I understand our Emperor more than before
Did you every hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise?
Hmm.... I Thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you.
A slave to destiny itself.
Definitely one of the best written villains of all time.
Palpatine could call Vader "Prag" or "Bitch" Vader would probably prefer them to "Friend" the way Palpatine says it. At least it would be more accurate if he did call him "Prag" or "Bitch"
Even if Vader did leave Palpatine. Where would he go to begin with? Tatooine?
This was very interesting, thanks for the video. However... what about the generous gifts Vader received? He also got his own moon.
Such Elegance..
For a more civilized Day.
Kee up the good work sir
Thought it was weird how the emperor called Darth Vader “my friend”
Palpatine rid himself of such "friends" years before he met Anakin Skywalker.
Palpy: Howdy Friend
Vader: *triggered*
This way of viewing Sidious as Vader’s abuser gives new insight into why he says to Luke on Bespin: “…you can destroy the Emperor.” Not because Vader wants to lure Luke per se, but because Vader wants Sidious dead but cannot accomplish it himself.
You are speaking as he speaks to Vader: "My friend"
Vader is insulted by that, because he knows what true friendship is, such as his and kenobi's.
I think that this relationship is interesting to those of us who have experienced any form of psychological abuse. So many reminders pop up in the way that Sidious speaks to Vader or how Vader speaks with Galen Marek, for instance.
“ a disappointed parent “ bro 💀💀💀
To be fair, he calls his enemies the same term (including Yoda).
It's a form of Stockholm Syndrome. Palpatine abuses Vader than pats his said, saying "There, there."
another way Sidious was keeping him in line was with his suit. As you said in other video where it's too vulnerable specially to his lightning.
He refers to a lot of people as "friend", He even called Yoda his little green friend. I figure someone would get triggered if he called Vader, "my big black friend" 😂
Yes, my friend.
“The gift of pain” lol. With friends like palpy, who needs enemies?
i always knew this before these new comics came out
One question: Did vader call the emperor "my master" in IV V VI more referring to the apprentice-master relationship or more of a "master-slave" relationship?
I might start doing this to people I don't like
Good relationship analysis
"I'm not your friend buddy!"
~ Vader
Out of curiosity... Is there some behind the scenes reason why Legends material is not really discussed?
Vader is a Sith Stalker
Or when a woman says to a man "do you love me" they know either a favor or he needs to do something
Sidious played the friendship card just to manipulate Vader, but thanks to the love of of his son Luke, Vader snapped out of it, and over threw his evil master, which brings up, be careful of the friends you make.
I believe once anakin joined the dark side and began as teacher and student the ship of friend has totally sunk
I can't remember for sure but didn't Sidious call dooku friend as well
Well spoken.
Great video
Why do you suppose that they did not put the interaction between Vader and The emperor on film instead of that NNOOOOOOOI❓
It’s ironic that he calls him “friend” because he only played the roll to manipulate and turn the chosen one, Vader finds out he was no friend
"I'm not your friend...guy ..."
Damn that Palpatussy so strong it seduced Anakin 😳
It would have cost you zero dollars not to say this
I wish my master would order me around and punish me as he pleases
💀
Why doesn't Vader have upper leg plated armor and also across his arms?
His suit is so lacking in comparison to his Storm Troopers
Whenhe gifts his that spaceship from naboo oof
You say "my friend" when you sign off >:)
Sidious
The master of manipulation 😈
It's not all just a lie, in the end he is his emperor, teacher and ally, being this maybe the only friend vader have
They were barely allies.
Vader is the chosen one after all
These rewards was a manipulation as well.
@@royalmatt499 wouldnt how he treats any other apprenticeship (e.g. maul) be 'manipulation'?
@@Sam-cm1uk Literally everything Palpatine does is a calculated act for control and superiority.
why did you insult us at the end
His problem was in no longer having self-worth, that died with Anakin, and he hated himself far more than anyone else, including Palps. I have/had people in my life that have many faces, and I fix the situation by playing-up the "friend" part. I reward them when they DO act like friends, but ignore them when they're cold, and even insult or sabotage them when they attempt to talk down to me. It would have been tough for Vader, but what did he have to lose? His life that he hated? Eventually Sidious would have treated him as more of an equal, seeing Vader as a worthwhile colleague, or he would have killed him, either way Vader's situation would have improved and the abuse would have stopped.
awesome video
Darth Vader knows the deserves it too
It's because Palatine told him a lie/ the truth because Padme did die but her children did not
one the first Death Star when Luke uses the Force to grab his lightsabre Darth Vader could let Luke kill the Emperor, so why didn't he
Officer? Yes. Your empire? No.
Long live the Republic! It will "Rise Again!"🥴🤣
I can confirm that on Mustafar, Vaders loss was strictly down to a *skill issue*
😂😂100%
I think it was overconfident, hate, and arrogance.
He should have used skillshare.
@@sirgalahad1376 or he could have been patient and not lunge at his enemy who has a tactical advantage.
Skill diff😩
