  • The state-of-the-art railway connecting Lao's capital with China's Yunnan Province is one of the world's newest high-speed rail lines. I rode it from Vientiane to Luang Prabang. Watch how it went.
    The China-Lao Railway, or as it's called in Laos, the Lao-China Railway, is a bullet train line that connects the capital Vientiane with China's Yunnan Province near the Lao border city of Boten. It's one of the world's newest high-speed rail lines (opened in December 2021) that the Chinese have ambitions to extend through Thailand all the way to Malaysia. I rode the line from Vientiane to Vang Vieng and on to Luang Prabang (both of which are subjects of subsequent videos) to report on the kind of experience the new railway offers. I wasn't disappointed.

    Love trains! China believes that building railways and other infrastructure is better diplomacy than waging proxy wars and bullying sovereign nations. Glad you're feeling better. Thanks Ron!❤

    The downside of overseas travel is always the dreaded illnesses. Never any fun but always worse when on the road. Glad you’re back up and around. That’s the most strict train station in the world. Happy and safe travels Ron👍🏻🤞✌🏻🤙🏻 12:52

      Right, Bumming. The controls in place at each of the stations on the China-Lao line seem a bit excessive. I don't know what to attribute that to, especially since I've ridden trains in China in the past and didn't experience anything approaching this. It could be that it is covid related, or that the powers-that-be are being extra finicky because the infrastructure is brand new and fancy and they want to set a certain pattern. In any case, everything is immaculate and the ride is terrific.

    Hehe in British Rail's time, 1970s-1990s, passengers "were always a bit of a nuisance". Seems like nothing changes!

    Hi Ron, did you find it easy getting a seat on the train from Vientiane to Luang Prabang? Because we have been told that we would need to book online and book 3-4 days well in advance.

    • @OUTBOUNDWITHRON
      @OUTBOUNDWITHRON  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Terry. If memory serves I booked my ticket in advance as part of a package that came with delivery by tuk tuk from my hotel to the train station. (In the video you were seeing my driver go into the building to pick up my train ticket at Will Call). I'm sure you could also book a ticket through 12GoAsia or another online source. In my case, it would have been no problem buying a ticket last minute since there were plenty of empty seats on the train, but of course I have no way of knowing whether that's usually the case. I would suggest if you're booking a hotel in Vientiane (through, say, Booking.com as I did), you can message the hotel and inquire about train tickets and likely you can get an assist from the hotel if you feel you need it.

    ❤❤❤Thanks Ron for sharing… by the way a slight correction.. the LCR is not a “high speed train” as it is about the same speed as the US fastest train in the US east coast. For real High Speed train you need to take the Shanghai-Beijing line. Good luck and happy railing.🙏🌷🌷🌷🌷

      Thanks for that info. I've been on the maglev train around Shanghai a few years ago and if I'm not mistaken it travels briefly at about 167 miles per hour. So there are definite gradations of high speed. In some countries I won't name where the trains lumber along at about 40 to 50 mph they would probably say the China-Lao is supersonic. 🙂

      China, Laos and Indonesia use the same standard or specification.

      TB10621-2014 This Standard applies to passenger train design speed of 250 ~ 350 km/h high-speed railway, the recent high-speed rail freight should also take into account the implementation of the relevant norms. Passenger dedicated line design speed of 350 km/h.
      TB 10623-2014 This specification is applicable to newly built standard-gauge passenger-dedicated railways with a design speed of 200km/h and below and only running EMU trains, regardless of locomotives pulling passenger trains into operation. The speed classification is generally 200 km/h, 160 km/h, 120 km/h third gear division.

      @@OUTBOUNDWITHRON USA, a three-tiered passenger rail strategy:
      • Core Express services frequent trains at 125-250+ mph in the nation’s densest and most populous regions;
      • Regional services service (90-125mph) between mid-sized and large cities; and
      • Feeder services (up to 90mph) connecting communities to the passenger rail network and providing a foundation for future corridor development.
