Between Laos and China, a thriving border (4/4) • FRANCE 24 English

  • In Laos, the only country in Southeast Asia without a coastline, it's hoped a high-speed train line will help open up the country and usher in an economic boom. The 420-kilometre-long rail link takes only three hours to connect Laos's capital Vientiane with China. On the Laotian side of the border, the Boten Special Economic Zone is coming into being, six years after the $10 billion project was launched.

This railway is roughly half in Lao and half in China. China paid 100% of the Chinese section, which runs 200 km/h train (more expensive than Lao section) and China financed 20% of the Lao section which runs 160 km/h train (about the same speed as Amtrak). Think this is how this video stated China financed 70%. The payment term is by live stock and goods instead of money. Lao is landlocked but it is actually located in the center of south east Asia. The model Lao is gearing toward is the role similar to Chicago being a logistic center for trade exchange between China and south east Asia. The next phase is extending the railway to Thailand and hope eventually all the way to Singapore. Lao has 1.7% increase in GDP after the railway in operation, and we hope the country continues to prosper. Currently only freight train can cross the border, no passenger train yet due to Covid.

As reports show, the Thais are enjoying the ease of export to China, especially to the interior-western region of China. This rail connection should compliment the Singapore-Kunming rail link which will reduce delivery time for the ASEAN-China trade by a good margin. With the huge population in China coupled with the potentials of the Central market in the Eurasian landmass, the potential of this link is important for the ASEAN region. With shorter delivery time in comparison with the comparative 'cheaper' shipping mode, the additional delay plus all the add-on charges at most of the seaports, the faster rail link may prove to be more efficient in longer term.

In Southeast Asia there are two countries that have bullet trains (Indonesia and Laos.) The difference is that bullet trains in Indonesia are not yet connected to China and they connect cities in Indonesia with the aim of growing new industrial areas, especially growth in the electric car battery industry ( Indonesia Battery Corp / IBC, LG Energy Soultions and CATL have started producing electric batteries for all EV brands in the world and controls more than 70% of the world's electric car batteries ).
So many electric car brands have been produced in Indonesia (Hyundai Ioniq 5, Wuling Air EV, Toyota Innova Zenix Hybrid, BZ4X and others) and this not only assembling like in other countries because in Indonesia they also produce electric car batteries.
Very different from the bullet trains in Laos, they are directly connected to cities in China.Things that are very unbalanced and profitable for China, with the completion of this bullet train it will be easier for China to expand economically to Laos and Laos only as a consumer for Chinese goods / products.

Me: "What the, a positive headline about China?"
Video: "As China tries to dominate global trade..."
    Me: Oh.
You know, what many regions Really need is to supercharge their Regional economic ties (i.e. trading with their neighbors). This is how they can form economic superblocks with stronger negotiating powers against super-sized economies like China. But for that, they need infrastructure. I understood after coming to Europe that you can't have economic integration if you don't even have the roads and rails to back it up. For example, it's easier for South Africa to trade with China than with land-locked African countries because of a lack of roads on the African continent.
For this, BRI is an opportunity. If I were a developed country, I would 1. join the BRI, 2. use it to set up the infrastructure framework within the region, 3. get as much tech transfer from China as possible in the meantime and 4. kick out China and do the rest myself once I have the capacity to do so. I mean, that's what China did: it allowed multinational corps in, learned how to do things themselves and kicked the multinational corps out. Fair's fair.
After BRI, Laos will go from an isolated landlocked country to one connected to not only its neighboring countries but to Southeast Asia as well. By then, it will no longer matter if China decides to have a fall-out with Laos: the railway will remain in Laos' territory and it will be able to set its own terms of trade.

    • @joggerdawn4078
      @joggerdawn4078 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Simple say, just think long term, but long enough for you to gain your own interests, no long term cooperation, no long term profits for both parties and do not even think about the benefits for the third party. Own first, nothing or very little for the other. Such strategy has been applied and proven to be effective for the last few hundreds of year. Whoever wanted to change it must go to hell!

    • @valerievankerckhove9325
      @valerievankerckhove9325 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@joggerdawn4078 That's right. In the end, the duty of all world governments is to their own people. Long-term, they can only control what happens within their borders and maybe influence their neighbors. Most countries will never be able to influence Chinese politics, so what if, for example, China decides to completely shut itself from the world for good? What if World War III happens? The infrastructure (and hopefully technology) left by BRI can hopefully be reused by these countries to build more diverse and resilient supply chains. This should be their real priority, not just increase trade with China.

    • @pjacobsen1000
      @pjacobsen1000 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@耳耳 "Laos uses one percent of the potash mine it owns to pay off its debt". Laos is a net potash importer, not exporter. Therefore, Laos cannot pay off its debts using potash.
" Why is Laos not in debt, tell me? " Laos IS in debt! Total foreign debt: US$ 16 Billion = 88% of GDP. That's a very large debt load.

Even though countries like cambodia borrow a lot more money than Laos, Cambodia’s debt to gdp ratio is only 37%. The loans taken by Laos will be quite hard to pay off with a smaller economy, but I’m hoping Laos can rise.

I request Zelensky to pray for ukranian people"s destiny this way as I teach him .
    God bless zelensky.
When I get fear that some way I would die . ( Killed or poisoned or accidents or diseases or government police )
I prayed God ,God I should not die by my carelessness. ( Foolishness,)
What HOLY SPIRIT tells ,I should be careful about it .
Sometimes God himself stops us .
    We can't do something.
This way God protects our life .
God's fire 🔥 goes before us consumes the ENEMIES of God.
    Their plans.
Helps us escape their traps .
But no doubt we will die if it is God's will.
    All our hairs are numbered.
But sometimes it is God's will that we must die .
Or sacrifice for a christian life .
    Style of Jesus.
So I pray God to bless his children .
I am sure that we will not be dieing without God's will.
We must long like Apostle Paul.
He longed to die like christ .
We will raise one day .
    Resurrection of our bodies.
We will have lot of Joy
    Amen .
So during the fear of death ( killed )
    1)
I pray that I shouldn't be careless.( Determined to be careful)
    2) I pray God for his children of our church to live here on this earth like how Abirraham prayed .
    Genesis 17;-
17Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?” 18And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!”
WE MUST LIVE FOR OUR CHILDREN
WE MUST PRAY FOR OUR CHURCH
WE MUST PRAY FOR OUR CHRISTIANS .
    WE MUST BE PARENTS.
I HAVE NO FEAR OF DEATH.
    OR
AFTER DEATH I WILL SEE JESUS.
I WILL SEE MY DAD THERE .
MEMORIES OF MY DAD ARE HELPING ME 😂😂😂 FROM FEAR OF DEATH .
I WILL ALSO SEE THE CHRISTIANS WHOM I LEAVE HER E NOW ON THIS EARTH.
    THIS IS OUR HOPE .
ALL PEOPLE MAY ONLY LONG TO LIVE .
SO GOD'S HAND MIGHT STOP THEM FROM KILLING US .
BEYOND THIS IF WE DIE WE DIE BECAUSE IT IS GOD'S WILL THAT WE MUST DIE .
    SACRIFICE.
    AMEN 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
