Expat Havens: colonial charm in Arequipa, Peru
This installment of Expat Havens, my occasional brief series of videos devoted to expats and those who aspire to be, examines Arequipa, Peru, a charming colonial city with an eternally spring-like climate often hailed as Peru's most beautiful city.
I've visited Arequipa twice, each time as an extended stopover traveling across Peru from Lima to either Cusco or Bolivia. At 7,700 feet elevation, Arequipa is the perfect place to relax and acclimate before heading up to the altiplano that lies to the city's northeast.
Like others in the series, the video isn't a deep dive into the ins and outs of emigrating. Rather, it's meant to provide a "sense of place" for those who may be considering (or dreaming about) relocating and who want an idea of what it's like.
As my friend Ilka Neugebauer, an attorney and life coach in Germany, reminds me, becoming an expat is best done with good preparation. (Part of her practice is helping expats worldwide.) I’ve included a link below from her (there's no promotional consideration involved) that's useful both for expats and those considering expat life:

Expat Havens: thumbs up for Plovdiv, Bulgaria

To begin a brief (and occasional) series of videos devoted to expats and those who aspire to be, I take a look at Plovdiv, Bulgaria, a city of 370,000 and one of Europe's better-kept secrets. Outbound with Ron: a personal update from Bali
มุมมอง 28121 วันที่ผ่านมา
Hello from Ubud and the gorgeous island of Bali in Indonesia on this Sunday, December 15, 2024. Whether you're new to Outbound with Ron or you've been watching for awhile, I want to take a few minutes in this video to catch you up with the latest regarding the channel, with me personally and with my travel plans as we head into 2025. As always, thanks for watching, for liking the videos and for...
This is Ubud. This is Bali. Welcome to paradise.

As island paradises go, Bali pretty much has it all. It offers fascinating culture, towering mountains, stunning jungles, picturesque rice terraces, pristine white sand beaches, warm and friendly people, delicious cuisine and-as the cherry on top-is incredibly affordable among the world’s best-known idyllic getaways. I’m in Ubud, the charming town considered to be Bali’s “culture capital” about...
How Borobudur became lost in the jungle for 400 years
มุมมอง 91หลายเดือนก่อน
Among travelers Borobudur is often mentioned in the same breath as Egypt’s great pyramids and Mexico’s Mayan and Aztec ruins. Considering its size, it’s hard to realize that this enormous Buddhist structure dating to the 7th century CE was abandoned in the 1400s and remained lost in the jungle for four centuries until the head of the colonial Dutch East Indies Company heard rumors of it and org...
Yogyakarta: Indonesia's cultural crown jewel

In a country as culturally and scenically rich as Indonesia, the Javanese city of Yogyakarta is unique. Long a bellwether of Indonesian arts and culture, Yogyakarta is the capital of the sultanate that was an independent kingdom for centuries and remains a semi-autonomous region under the rulership of a sultan. It has a laid-back, set-apart vibe, a proud history and, as with other cities in Ind...

Hello Ron, I enjoyed your video, the way you tell the information about my city, I hope you come back soon and visit more beautiful places of my city. Take care ☻
Thank you Alyson! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video.
All masked - is this old or are they still in plandemia? We in neighbour country almost never needed a mask. This is a bad sign for freedom in El Peru.
Hi, what "neighbor" country are you referring to?
Lovely video, Ron - just there this past summer and is easily my favourite city in Peru (so far)! <3 Looking forward to more of this series. Have a wonderful 2025!
Sounds like you had a great time in Arequipa. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Thank you Ron for this new series. It’s very enjoyable. I’m putting Arequipa on my list of places to explore thanks to you. Wishing you a happy, healthy new year filled with more travels🙏👍🏻✌🏻🤙🏻
Thank you Geoffrey. Glad you're enjoying these videos. One of the beauties of investigating potential expat locations is that one can enjoy checking them out whether or not deciding to move there. ;-)
Wonderfully detailed video, thank you!
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! Coincidentally, there's a "reprise" of Arequipa about to upload to the channel in a few hours.
In its 2025 rankings, Numbeo just listed Alexandria as the cheapest big city in the world. It was the first time in a long time that a city in Pakistan or India wasn't cheapest.
Interesting. I wouldn't have guessed it but at the same time it seems plausible.
Has actually 43 beaches on the island
Nice video. Bulgaria is a lovely country. But 400-500 USD for a one room apartment is not cheap. I pay 500 UD for a 2 room apartment in a city in a central location in Sweden. Maybe expat driving prices?
Thanks. So glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah, prices are difficult to pin down. There are so many variables. It sounds like maybe you have a good deal where you are.
Querido Ron, eu me chamo Julia e falo do Brasil!
Thanks so much for the invitation, Julia. You can find the Brazil Playlist under the Playlist tab. Thanks again for watching.
Fica em qual cidade? Amo morar nesse lugar
Hi Julia! Sirince village is near the small city of Selçuk in the Izmir province of southwestern Turkey. Selçuk is a wonderful place and if you were to visit Sirince it would be the logical place to stay. The ancient ruins of Ephesus are just outside of Selçuk.
@OUTBOUNDWITHRON obrigada, querido!
Thanks Ron
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Interestingly, Serdica was originally named for the Serdi, a Celtic tribe.
I see someone is up on their history of the Serdi migration to ancient Thrace. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Thank you Ron for this new addition to your channel. The format gives a nice taste of the city and what to expect for monthly cost of living. I can’t wait to see other ex pat haven examples👍👏🏻
Thanks Geoffrey. Each of us needs to do our homework before considering a move anywhere. I hope these videos will be helpful, if only in a small way.
I visited a few months ago for a month ... partly because I had seen your video. I enjoyed the city but would never consider retiring there as I found it so difficult to get around. I don't want to drive and the public transport is unreliable and unbelievably crowded ... often jammed like sardines. The roads are really congested too. Too many underpasses which need to be climbed up and down and I witnessed two falls whilst I was there - both people far younger than me. If I was to retire in Bulgaria I would definitely go for Sofia over Plovdiv - both for accessibility and because, frankly, there is a lot more to do.
I understand what you're saying. Individual circumstances are a huge factor no matter where we are. Thanks for sharing your experience.
We're Americans in the process of moving to Plovdiv right now. Loved this video--and didn't know about the ruins under the HM Store. Need to check that out.
Fantastic! Congratulations and I wish you lots of happiness there.
Hi, just out of curiosity, why you moving from one of the most developed country, to poor post OST Block country?
@@oleksiysaiko5859 If by "developed," you mean everyone owns a gun, then there's your answer. Also, we are not moving from the US to Bulgaria. We have actually been living out of the US for several years. Bulgaria is a gorgeous country with lovely people. We're excited to explore it.
@ don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I have a bad opinion about Bulgaria, but still… was curious. By “developed” I mean OECD countries, with developed economy, health system, education system and other factors. Bulgaria lacks behind in all of them. As a German, I know many Bulgarians that left Bulgaria for Germany from those reasons. But exploring it as a tourist, could be really nice.
Bali sounds and looks amazing. Thank you for taking us with you. Looking forward to the 29th
Thanks Jeannie! It's turned out as I expected, a great place to catch up on editing in a wonderful, restful environment.
Man I wanna visit Turkey so bad. It looks so beautiful
Have a wonderful time Ron 🌸
Thanks! That's the plan. :-)
You're just up the road from my villa. Enjoy Ubud Ron and Merry Xmas.
Thanks neighbor!
My American family lived in Bucharest for 3 years and at first we were concerned a bit by its unpolished outward appearance in parts but soon came to realize that's part of its charm. It's a very unique safe city with friendly helpful and interesting people. We lived it there and feel it will always be a 2nd home. ❤️ By the way, I never knew Herestrau park by any other name . Everyone stilled called it that up until we left in 2022. Thanks for your presentation!
Thanks for the video update. Have a wonderful time in Bali. I've enjoyed watching the several videos over the last few months about travel in Indonesia.
Happy to hear you're enjoying the videos Mark. Thanks for letting me know.
Thanks for the update, Ron. So glad to hear that all is better health-wise. I always enjoy your videos and wish you a wonderful stay in Ubud - it looks heavenly! <3
Hey thank you. I appreciate it. So glad you enjoy the videos.

Thanks Claude!
NO BREAKS FOR YOU RON! All TH-camrs are by definition superhuman, so we won't cut you any slack - LOL! So, just have to say, your background in print journalism is likely one of the things that make your videos stand out. You're very careful with your language and it seems you're more deliberate than most people doing travel vlogs. Glad to hear that you're on the mend and looking forward to seeing more of these, especially the Expat series!
You're very kind Rick. I do try to bring a journalistic approach to what I do while striving to be casual and accessible. My main goal each time is to make a video that I would want to watch.
@@OUTBOUNDWITHRON Very good!
I’m so glad to hear you’re making a good recovery from your surgery! I never would have guessed from your videos-you always come across as so active and spirited. I look forward to your videos every Sunday, and they’ve become my go-to resource when planning trips. I always revisit your fun experiences to see if you’ve been to my destination! Wishing you a very Merry Christmas, and I can’t wait to see what exciting journeys you’ll take us on next year.❤
I appreciate it RN. And I'm pleased to hear that I didn't look as diminished as I sometimes felt this past year. The last long trip I took pre-surgery was with "doctor's permission" with conditions attached, including that I not overdo it and that if I experienced elevated symptoms I would call it quits and fly home. I'm thankful it didn't come to that, although I did have to take a pass on some activities that I would have otherwise engaged in. Post-recovery after coming off the long trip to film the series that will start to appear on the channel later in January I felt like I was almost all the way back. Very grateful!
Enjoy Bali ... and keep doing what you do Ron! Your vlogs are more interesting and informative than many, inspiring me to visit more places! Wishing you good health and happy travels
Thank you Gary! Life is a box of chocolates and travel is a very special piece. ;-)
Hi Ron! Glad to hear you are OK and nearing the end of your post-op recovery phase! It has been a while since I posted a comment in your videos and it does not mean we (my wife and I) haven't been watching them. On the contrary, we have been following you ever since you started your Y-T channel. We look forward to new videos every Sunday. We are happy to know that you are enjoying your Asia and SE Asia trips. We look forward to your "Expats Haven" series since we are expats ourselves. Have a Merry Christmas!
Thanks Phil to both of you! Knowing that there are people on the other side of the camera who appreciate what you do is one of the sustaining joys of being a TH-camr.
Glad your feeling better! Are you always traveling solo? Do you get lonely? I was just wondering.
Yes, Justin, I travel solo. I usually tell people who ask that question that while I'm alone, I don't feel lonely. But more accurately, I don't feel alone much of the time. I meet wonderful people while traveling.
These kind of vids are great to get to know you and why you do what you do. Also inspiring for this 64 year old stuck in a rut after forced retirement……
@@arkymichael6935 I appreciate your saying that Michael. I can honestly say that travel has been a source of inspiration for me.
Greetings Ron, I’m so thrilled to hear that your post op recuperation went well and that you are back on the road. Despite many of the downsides of living in these interesting times, one cannot certainly not argue against the miracle of modern medicine. This was a great “catch up” video and I’m excited to watch your Expat Havens series. Stay well, safe travels🙏👍🏻✌🏻🤙🏻
Many thanks Geoffrey! I have much to be thankful for, including my health. I feel great!
Wish you good health & a great time in Bali!
Thanks Magnus! Much appreciated.
Ron, that was spectacular! I've seen a number of videos on Bali, and everyone has their own perspective - yours is a welcome addition! As children, my younger sister and I would spend hours going through a book that was given to our older sister. The book, "Far into the Night: A Story of Bali" had beautiful pastel illustrations and having had the book read to us a few times, we would recite the story to one another over and over. The island seemed magical and almost other worldly. And then people go there today and IT STILL IS like a dream.
Rick, what a wonderful memory! And I love the book's title. Thanks for sharing.
Before I write another word: your channel is fantastic, absolutely delightful. In this regard, I have a question namely "when was this video shot?" I am asking for the following reason. I was in Bali from Australia for a few weeks in the mid 90s and at that time it looked as you show, even Ubud; magical. However, I have read that Bali and especially Ubud have now been so overtaken by development, particulalrly Russian, the island has lost much of its appeal.
Hi there! I'm so glad to hear you enjoy the channel. I'm in Bali currently as I reply to you. However, the video was filmed earlier in 2024. Coincidentally, I will explain why that's the case in a special sit-down-and-catch-up video that goes up on the channel this coming Sunday, December 15, 2024. Hope you can watch.....As with any place in the world, Bali has seen plenty of change in the 30-plus years since you were here. Every highly-desirable location on Earth I can think of has "suffered" from the effects of development and modern tourism, in my opinion. So it's easy for us to lament the changes in a place that we knew before the mass scale tourism of the 21st century (I do it myself with Carmen del Playa, Mexico, which is an urban seaside sprawl now but where practically nothing was there but coconut palms and white sand when I first laid eyes on it ages ago. It was just a ferry landing.) So have Ubud and Bali changed. Of course they have. Have they lost the magic? No. In travel as with anything else, I try not to let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Cheers. Thanks again for watching!
A new place which I’ve become actually obsessed with is Pizza Cult in Ubud. Amazing food, great service, such a cute venue and really affordable. Also a great place to bring your laptop and work from!
Thanks Ruby! I'll have to check it out.
sacred to the us all... a money grab to the balinese.. the tourists show more respect than locals.
Hey i'm getting the context. I think maybe there's a first part of your message that didn't send. Cheers.
Oops. Sorry. I meant I'm NOT getting the context.
Thanks for this beautiful Video. It's rather interesting for me, feeling what i felt when i visited bali with my ex-girlfriend and the places you've been to Also. We've separated but this Video still makes me feel a lot closer to what once was. Cheers.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video under the circumstances and I wish you the best going forward!
Absolutely stunning. Bali looks idyllic. The kindness and beauty of the Indonesian people must be inexhaustible as the popularity of Bali has skyrocketed and I only hope that this gorgeous spot does not fall victim as other spots have to over tourism. Thanks for taking us on this adventure 🙏✌🏻🤙🏻
We share the same hope about Bali Geoffrey.
how many days would you recommend staying in Arequipa? I will use Arequipa as a stop over to acclimatization before heading to La Paz.
Hi there! You don't say if you're flying in or traveling by bus or car across Peru, but assuming it's one of the latter you'll appreciate Arequipa in addition to its charms as a great place to get some rest. How long you stay depends on what interests you and whether you plan to take a side trip (long day trip or overnight tour to Colca Canyon). If Arequipa is more or less a stop-over within a trip of shorter duration, I'd suggest you wouldn't be disappointed spending three nights there (to give you two full days and then some) to sample what the city has to offer and help acclimatize for the altiplano ahead. Hope that helps.
@ thanks for your prompt reply. I will be flying in from Rio de Janeiro. Arequipa seems has a lot offer based on videos i watched on youtube. Would you think 6 full days is too much? Considering 2 days to relax and acclimatise as how my body would react to high altitude and probably 1 to 2 day trips. Salinas and Aguada Blanca and colca look amazing.
@@nasdanrose4802 Yes, definitely 6 days isn't too much considering what you have in mind doing while there. Colca alone is strenuous and super strenuous if you try to do it as a day trip. So if you do an overnight version of the Colca trip there's two days right there. Since you mention you're heading to La Paz do you know about Peru Hop/ Bolivia Hop? If not, might want to check it out online. Also, if it's any help, some of the other videos I've done in Peru and Bolivia may very well be on your route. I know you'll have a great time!
