God this fight. Back when i first played the original as a child this broke me. Years later replaying it any sadness was replaced by a rage that demanded Jenova's head. Now, still hearing Aerith's theme is enough to get a rise out of me.
I so agree with this. I always adored Sephiroth as a character, and in the OG I was more sad for Aerith then angry at him. But man, in this fight I was on a mission, my only goal was to hurt him as much as I could.
The Jenova fight after Aeriths death was one of the parts I been eager to experience with the remake. I always liked how they played her theme during the fight. I dont care what anyone says. 7:26 is the best call back of any game media. When you have the og avalanche trio and you know the losses and wins they've taken, this was a massive callback to where the journey first started. Nomura and kitase must be protected from death himself! 🙏❤️
I love that this game followed the rule of cool with all the party switching and fighting on endlessly falling rocks. One of my favorite final boss fights since Kingdom Hearts 2. Square has finally made good on their vision to have presentation and gameplay match Advent Children.
One of my favourite things about this fight is that it’s a masterful foreshadowing of the Jenova Synthesis fight. There’s a weird blue/green background as you’re falling while fighting a massive Jenova monstrosity. It was cool seeing Synthesis during the Ancients’ Lore Dump in the temple, but seeing THIS was so sick!
Just finished the game right now and was thinking this exactly. The part where the party was on different rocks tackling the wings and legs with that background got me thinking of that exact fight.
@kjh4496 you've got it a bit backwards. She was a cetra copy transforming into her true form. The ancients fought and sealed her, it wouldn't make sense for her to be changing into a cetra, she changing out of the cetra disguise when she got sealed so she's still half and half when we see her in nibelhiem.
This Theme represents the feelings during this fight perfectly. First the sadness you feel for Aerith. The deeper you get into the fight, the more you want revenge for what Sephiroth has done to Aerith. You become a member of avalanche. A masterpiece and my favorite version so far, besides of the AC one.
Ya know, I really thought they blew their load by giving us the proper J-E-N-O-V-A theme in Remake (when you never fought a Jenova form in Midgar) with that awesome build up, but god damn, they somehow just keep improving it. Say what you will about Squenix as a dev, but their composers are always top notch and put out non-stop bangers. Can’t wait for how epic the proper One Winged Angel, not to mention Jenova Complete and Birth of a God, will be in part 3.
Music tells a story. This fight starts with Aerith's Theme, but gets engulfed by Jenova's Theme. Theory: Possibly alluding to the Aerith at the end being a imitation by Jenova, since Jenova can become those you love.
100% agree with this. That didn’t feel like aerith at the end. It would make sense narratively too that since Seph couldn’t convince cloud that tifa is a fake, he uses a fake aerith instead to fuck with his head causing an inverse. When one plan doesn’t work, change and adapt as they say
I think you’re right. Up until 2:16, she only had eye sockets, right? She’s evolving and now has human eyes. Jenova Synthesis has a human female form inside that husk. Imagine how twisted it would be if Aerith returns at some point in Part 3, only to become a warped form later on.
This feels right, seeing how the remake games have fleshed out a lot of the concepts that were simply expressed in the original. Part 3 will have to focus heavily on Cloud’s memory, identity, and ability to reconcile with loss, while being pushed closer to the edge by this mind bending Eldritch monster
Sephiroth then explains that that is what the reunion is, merging worlds that have happy outcomes with ones that have negative ones to form a massive slurry of despair and anger. Sephiroth was the one who got us to break fate, but is still doing the same things that made him lose in the timeline fate wanted him to do anyway. Why? Because he wants to populate the multiverse with what ifs and multiple outcomes to the same issues so that he can merge them into one massive timeline of misery, and whatever that ends up accomplishing for him.
That feeling you’re feeling / it’s creating is outrage. You’re at a funeral and this creature wants a fight. Your mind is still on loss but you feel your blood boiling at how offensive and violating this thing is. It’s the feeling of having a full limit gauge.
Listened to this probably hundreds of times by now. Amazing!!! I feel like I haven’t found a version where the phase transitions don’t seem off unfortunately.
Hearing the first minute of this soundtrack and delivering everything we got against Jenova, limit skills, full attacks, synergie abilitys, in name of aerith, its just f****ng awesome and makes my skin crawl!!
Can someone just assist me please, I'm looking for the theme that plays when Zack holds Aerith in the very beginning. It has a different tone to it and I like it a lot
Idc anything else that happened in this whole game…the fact that this music exists justifies anything they did with the game. I literally don’t even care.
Out if the 2 remakes this fight takes my favorite bossfight the emotion, areiths music, than it transitioning to jenovas music saying the cast has had enought of this shit, and the epic 9999 attack cutscene everyone does you feel every bit of this fight and its emotions cause they lost their closest friend
Its very rare that a game reaches out to the player so much where you actually feel how the characters are feeling... the situation happening the music.. the nestalgia of the og.. its just so good.. i was fighting this boss with so much determination whilst fighting my own emotions lol
I was a bit confused during Aerith’s ah… prickly situation, and so I didn’t really feel The same sorrow I did in the original, seeing her like that. I don’t think they showed enough of what really happened. That said, you know I still wept like a baby when that INCREDIBLE version of her theme played.
Does the game may not be my precious Old School turn-based combat that I missed so so so so so so so so so much from the 90s, watching how they have orchestrated the cinematics around the way the battles play out in this game is absolutely something of a work of absolute f****** heart. Not art. It's better than art
This is my first final fantasy 7 gameplay and that battle was such an awesome fight i literally play and cry at the same time because the game is an absolute masterpiece, waiting for part 3
I feel like the assignment was really understood - it's like someone actually took the time to identify the best parts of the original theme and make sure to recreate their crescendo-like impact whilst making it more dramatic.
wow i didn’t even notice that… also same when they tag team jenova during the cutscene, barret and tifa are using their LB but cloud is just doing braver
The intro is honestly brilliant on an insane level. They've been "baiting and switching" us with music since the beginning of Remake, when you think "Those who fight" is about to play, but it only actually plays a bit later into the game... Now they've baited both OG fans and newcomers into thinking it'd be just Jenova theme again, but it transitions flawlessly into Aerith's theme, as in the original. I actually though "Wait, where the Aertih the-... oh God, there it is"
cloud isn’t doing a LB, he’s just doing a braver attack. same at the start of the fight his LB gauge is empty unlike the other party members. it represents the fact that cloud is blocking aerith’s death in his mind and isn’t impacted by it compared to tifa barret etc. it hits even harder when you notice that!😢
I love this theme because its like jenova slowly realising she just killed the last ancient. Phase 1: god i hope i did it Phase 1.5: wait, do i do it Phase 2: shit, i did it Phase 3: holy shit, i did it! Phase 4: HOLY SHIT, I FUCKING DID IT!!!
I regret to inform you that, I didn’t shed any tears because I already knew this what was gonna happen. I just admire on how beautiful it sounded. We move on because of Aerith. We move towards on part 3 and see this game to the end 🙏
Phase 1 is an absolute gut punch. An emotional roller coaster and it's a beautiful rendition for one of the best characters in all of video gaming. The actual Jenova theme though? Yeah, it's a goddamn anthem! It goes so hard!!!!
Absolute perfection. The way it degrades from Aerith's theme to Jenova's wS incredible. So damn haunting. They made an already amazing track a million times better. We makin in out the main timeline with this one!
I seldom cry during the ending of an amazing video game but NEVER at the start of a boss fight. Love you, Aerith ❤ Adore how the Jenova takes over Aerith's. Soundtrack storytelling!
I really thought they were gonna skip Aerith’s Theme in favor of J-E-N-O-V-A when I first played. Then Aerith’s Theme kicked in and I cried. Then J-E-N-O-V-A kicked in again and i was done crying, I was ready for revenge
The build up to "The scene"? Perfect! The fight itself? Perfect! But as far The "the scene"? Yeah, i get what they were going for but they kinda dropped the ball with the execution. This track does an excellent job of making you mourn the loss of a loveable person whose life was cut too short, But it also pisses you the hell off because what you have to deal with. IT DEMANDS THAT YOU MAKE JENOVA/SEPHIROTH PAY IN BLOOD!
I love how this theme slowly goes from being blatantly Aerith's theme and slowly evolves into J-E-N-O-V-A as the fight goes on to remind us that you're still fighting a big ass alien
This is the most epic fight in the game in my opinion. The one after this should have been, but ends up feeling too long and bloated to keep the momentum up by the time of its completion. The Jenova fight is tightly paced and well edited in contrast, with perfectly timed musical queues and motifs and the choreography in the cut scenes is mind blowing. I think this fight got all the time and budget. XD
I went into this Chapter very suue that one of the reasons they wouldnt stick to the OG scene and let her live was because JENOVA Life wouldnt be final boss material. This boss completely changed that viewpoint, became my favorite boss in the game, and with how bad the actual scene and rest of the aftermath went, I now kinda wished they just sticked with the og scene if they werent going to let her outright live. Though at least with the consistencey of the Jenova fights being amazing, curious to see if Death (wonder how that will play out given that part of the story isnt needed anymore since Cloud had the Black Materia) and Synthesis can keep up the winning streak.

The best final boss gambit I've ever played. 11/10 game
Wow! That's awesome bro! Glad your love it so much ^^!
Idc anything else that happened in this whole game…the fact that this music exists justifies anything they did with the game. I literally don’t even care.
No it doesn’t. It’s the one good moment in a shitshow of weeb cringe.
3:46 That part omg ❤
This aerith theme remixed, the transition, all this song is a perfection..
Chills every time, for multiple of reasons ❤️🔥🥵
Its very rare that a game reaches out to the player so much where you actually feel how the characters are feeling... the situation happening the music.. the nestalgia of the og.. its just so good.. i was fighting this boss with so much determination whilst fighting my own emotions lol
I was a bit confused during Aerith’s ah… prickly situation, and so I didn’t really feel
The same sorrow I did in the original, seeing her like that. I don’t think they showed enough of what really happened. That said, you know I still wept like a baby when that INCREDIBLE version of her theme played.
OMFGGGGGG WHAT MUSIIIC IS THISSSSS ❤❤❤❤❤
Does the game may not be my precious Old School turn-based combat that I missed so so so so so so so so so much from the 90s, watching how they have orchestrated the cinematics around the way the battles play out in this game is absolutely something of a work of absolute f****** heart. Not art. It's better than art
I love how it starts out with Aerith's theme and then Jenova basically highjacks it as her own theme takes over
The music is so rich you cant even enjoy the animations in slow motion or your speakers start speaking in JENOVA
Curious that Gilgamesh (Battle on the Big Bridge) featured a few times in this music, i wonder if there was a reason for it.
This track is a slow burn that was an inferno at the start
FFVIIR 3 - Remembrance
I’m not…just mad…I’m not just sad…But I’m no longer scared…Just exhausted of him
This is my first final fantasy 7 gameplay and that battle was such an awesome fight i literally play and cry at the same time because the game is an absolute masterpiece, waiting for part 3
I feel like the assignment was really understood - it's like someone actually took the time to identify the best parts of the original theme and make sure to recreate their crescendo-like impact whilst making it more dramatic.
that's the first boss in FF7 you don't just beat, but destroy because of anger and hatred
I love that the final phase is the og jenova theme fuuully. I teared up and went nuts
Funfact.
Due to the emotions flaring in the sequence everyone has thier limitbreak at the start but cloud whos under delusion
wow i didn’t even notice that… also same when they tag team jenova during the cutscene, barret and tifa are using their LB but cloud is just doing braver
This moment was so powerful, I paused to cry, they are very strong at Square, can’t wait for the conclusion
I actually though "Wait, where the Aertih the-... oh God, there it is"
Barret Cloud and Tifa doing their limits combined for 9999 damage was peak I fear aint nothing SE does gonna top this til part 3 drops.
cloud isn’t doing a LB, he’s just doing a braver attack. same at the start of the fight his LB gauge is empty unlike the other party members.
it represents the fact that cloud is blocking aerith’s death in his mind and isn’t impacted by it compared to tifa barret etc. it hits even harder when you notice that!😢
"After all you are just a puppet"
3:57 Jenova synthesis music weaved in for a quick bit. Nice
I love this theme because its like jenova slowly realising she just killed the last ancient.
Phase 1: god i hope i did it
Phase 1.5: wait, do i do it
Phase 2: shit, i did it
Phase 3: holy shit, i did it!
Absolutely Beautiful 😢 I actually had to hold back tears while fighting for the first time-
Cloud is the only one who's Limit Break isn't active at the start of the fight
He also isn't pushed back by Jenova's Mourning Wail attack. Everyone else is. Realizing this fucked me up so much.
The fight being as long and intense as it is really makes it feel like the games going "if you're still crying get it together we got aliens to kill"
Phase 1 is an absolute gut punch. An emotional roller coaster and it's a beautiful rendition for one of the best characters in all of video gaming.
The actual Jenova theme though? Yeah, it's a goddamn anthem! It goes so hard!!!!
So epic and emotional at the same time bruh
I took my mom to see the FF7 Rebirth Symphony and she said "I never knew video game music could be like this"
Absolute perfection.
I’m not crying, you’re crying
I'm not crying, you're crying...
We're all crying
Haaa..this theme..remind me if You lost someone special, but you have a job to do because your boss is angry....
this is the best track of rebirth, just after gongaga’s theme for sure!
