Ne me mori facias (Make me not die)
Gloriosa, Generosa (Glorious, Generous)
Bits of Carl Off"s CARMINA BURANA that make Sephiroth's theme. They are from different and unrelated poems of the piece, but one thing binds them all here: PASSION and FURY.
The first 4 verses are bound to Sephiroth's descomunal and murderous Rage that posesses him in the begining of Clouds story. He curses his destiny as an experimental aberration (Sors Immanis and Inanis) in the same dark tone of O Fortuna's choir.
As for the last 3 verses we have quotes from the ending of the carmina that are spoken among lovers amidst springs lucious ferver. They want to unite with one another and say " Come quickly, or ill die from love, you are glorious and perfect." The gloriosa is taken from the final acclamation made to APHRODITE in the composition, wich they call QUEEN OF THE WORLD.
So this last part contains in itself SEPHIROTHS LONGING and his embracing of his MOTHERS NATURE and his fate as CHOSEN ONE. He stops cursing his orign and is now proud of it.
We have 6 verses before the GLORIOSA . 6 is the number of WINGS that SERAPHINS have. So this is quite symbolic and beautifully crafted, its not an accidental choice of verses as it first seemed to me, im amazed.
In total we can sum up 7, wich is the number of celestial perfection: heaven had 7 levels. There are 7 archangels. Another numeric coincidence.
Lastly, if we add the refrains MISERERE NOBIS and SEPHIROTH we have 9, the most astounding number here.
NINE is the number of Angelic Choirs in heaven, or in more straight words: the types of angels of heaven. From greatest to minors: SERAPHINS, CHERUBINS, THRONES, DOMINIONS, POWERS, VIRTUES, PRINCIPALITIES, ARCHANGELS and ANGELS.
Since Serphiroth is a LUCIFERINE figure (this goes since his physical aspect to his story of prowess, pride, treason and downfall) we can relate him to the fallen angels. Classical theology speculates if Lucifer was a Seraphim (the greatest among the already greatest choir of angels), a Cherubim or even an Archangel.
The One Wing is a reference to ABEZETHIBOU, a famous demon in classic esoterism that followed Belzebul against god and had one of his wings ripped off when he fell to Hell. His wing was red.
In the final form; SAFER SEPIROTH, he has 6 white wings, wich is the mark of a seraphin, plus his iconic black wing to make him more stylish.
Finally, the most important here: the fact that Cloud defeats Sephiroth while he himself is a LOW RANK soldier serves as a parallel to MICHAEL, that was an humble and small Archangel recognized for DEHTRONING SATAN from heaven.
Thats it, the whole game has many symbols and references from judaism/christianism, Kaballah and even Norse mithology (midgar, midgarsommr) in it. PURE ART I MUST SAY.
But here's the thing...
The Black Wing was only added first in the Advent Children movie. (KH had more of a dark blue wing)

So it was a direct reference to ABEZETHIBOU.
And if I may add...
The Whisper's theme is musically based off the Carmina Burana.
Most important the 'Sors immanis' section.
You're fighting against inhumane fate when you fight the Whispers.

@OlorinCirdan Well it isn't a choral piece for the most part. But you'll definitely hear a strong, although non-identical similarity to that part.
You can also hear it in the 4th and final movement of One Winged Angel Rebirth. (From FFVII Remake, not Rebirth, as confusing as it is)
This soundtrack is awesome but I was really hoping to hear Birth of a God. Hopefully it's being saved for part 3.
Sames, I love One Winged Angel but it's gotten more than enough remixes, Birth of a God is severely underrated!! I am worried they won't include that track or Bizarro/Rebirth Sephiroth in part 3 since he's already appeared here though 😭
I’m 99% sure it’ll be in Part 3. They used a more ominous theme for this fight because it’s a dark part of the story. Birth of a God has more of a rock sound which works better for the battle at the North Crater than it would here.
@justinhurowitz70 Well, would it be more suited for the first visit to the northern crater? Because I wouldn’t assume that part 3 is going to go through both disc 2 AND 3
@@WL-bs4nc IIRc the devs have already said it's gonna be 3 parts. They can easily do Disc 2 and 3 in one game, the majority of FF7 was on Disc 1. Disc 2 is much shorter and Disc 3 is literally just the final dungeon and the endgame sidequests because they needed extra space for the ending FMV

I know some people find OWA overhyped and overplayed, which is a total valid opinion to have. In fact, I actually agree that it is a tad overrated in the grand scheme of FF music.
But not once has it ever come on and I not get really fucking pumped. OG, Advent Children, Kingdom Hearts, crisis core, remake, smash.
This shit is ALWAYS a banger.
There's just something so harrowing about the part at 4:59 that I love so much, it isn't a leitmotif of anything and it's so disconnected of a melody that the only thing you hear is the ambient noise of the hollow expanse you're in.
I'd assume most people wouldn't care about that segment but man... I'm so glad the entire Sephiroth Reborn vs Cloud sequence isn't just a reoccurring song or long even, just like a 30 secondish loop of that piece alone

Believe me, I love these sections just as much as the more complex pieces. Something amazing about mixing Gregorian Choirs in games like this. Masashi Hamauzu is a genius. Too bad he's considering retiring after the Remake trilogy is over.
As someone who's first Final Fantasy was FF13, I love every time Masashi Hamauzu makes music for FF7. Dude sets the tone right off the bat here!!

Some of these tracks I could obviously tell it was his work. The theme when you're refitting the regional bosses in the combat simulator sounds straight ripped out of 13!
Welcome to the club. I’m particularly fond of Fighting Fate and Sabers Edge
Seeing Cloud and Zack fight, you see certain aspects of their fighting style. Cloud has affinity with the Buster Sword but os wholly reliant on it to deliver both quick and powerful blows. Zack has owned the Buster Sword longer and understands the nuance of using such a large blade. Therefore, he opts to attack with his body in conjunction with the weighted swings of the sword to get the most optimal and balanced damage per second. Cloud has variety while Zack has consistency.
This is very well shown in their win pose. Cloud spins his sword only a couple times with difficulty and then rests it on his shoulder while Zack spins it many times with ease before attaching it effortlessly on his back. Brilliant attention to details.
The first fights theme ive been looking for so long, easily one of my favorite themes of all time, such a classic ff vibe and matches the moment so well

Am I the only one hearing LOVELESS in all of this? Reminds me thematically of the play with how all instruments are used.
I mean the way these characters fight in battle is pretty fucking theatrical-I mean it looks so fun in this world to be able to do sick anime shit like this
I wouldn't be surprised if there is a level of inspiration from Loveless in these games. With Loveless being about 3 friends and Crisis Core centered around Angeal, Seph and Genesis, I could totally see them trying to mimic that in this project by having Zack, Cloud and Seph be the 3 "friends."
Masashi Hamauzu did both sections, the Loveless tracks and the Sephiroth Reborn Tracks. (As well as some stuff for the Barret Dyne segmanet, and a few other tracks like the first Zack fight segment at he start of the game.) So the similarities are not an illusion, you are hearing Hamauzu pop the f off.
The call and answer from Zack's part in 10:50 - 11:25 is some of the best shit I've heard in a LONG time. Its on consistent repeat, its SOOO GOOOD!

I just loved last part of Sephiroth Reborn even more.
It's a mix of Whisper's Harbinger, Sephiroth Reborn, with a touch of One Winged Angel Choir.

My God why is Aerith just so gorgeous and her voice actress Briana White is too good lord you should check out her bikini spread she did I was like OMG! Ur yeah that was some Advent Children Shit literally with Cloud/Aerith vs Sephiroth and dude when he stabbed her through the gut in battle as a move THAT HE ONLY DOES TO HER was sick!!! I’m like nah ni*** you gotta go down for that.

I know we’re all excited to take down the real Sephiroth next game, but can I say… I’m really looking forward to using Vincent to shoot Hojo in the face on top of the Sister Ray. The other two characters will just be there to back him up, Vincent needs his revenge :3
You realize Vincent isn’t the only one with a personal grudge against Hojo. Cloud, Tifa, Red XIII have grudges against him too.

Black comedy aside goddamn, the absolute slam of it coming back on after that transition is nuts. The audio equivalent of hope incarnate...followed up by the reminder that you're fighting a dude who doesn't just want to rule anymore, he wants it to be *absolute* now and he'll flat out weaponize fate itself to make it happen.

Not sure if anyone's noticed, but in the first fight with Zack you can hear Trigger Situation from DoC, while in the second one, you can hear Thunder Plains from FFX.

I can't decide. One Winged Angel itself is better on the Remake imo, but the other boss themes for Jenova Lifeclinger, Sephiroth's first phase and Sephiroth Reborn, and also the boss gauntlet itself, are my absolute favorites on Rebirth

That version of sephiroth is not safer sephiroth, it Is the version we fight in the gongaga reactor in the og iirc
You only ever fight Sephiroth as Bizzaro & Safer in the Northern Crater in the OG. All you fight at the Gongaga reactor in OG is Big Wheel, AKA Tankceratops, which is now a 4-legged dinosaur-like enemy in Rebirth during a side quest in the region.

As great as this music is this whole fight took way too long imo. Keep in mind if you lose you CAN’T skip the cutscenes during phase changes which was one of my biggest concerns with part 1.

Not gonna lie I think they are using sephiroth too much. Final boss of the first part, now of the second, I literally don't feel any threat fighting him in part 3 now. In the original he was this omnipotend presence you can't even really scratch and now he's just a punching bag

Ahem…Bizarro Sephiroth…
Since they didn't call Sephiroth's form Bizarro, they decided to make the music bizarro instead? Made this whole part of the game feel weird and disconnected...maybe they were going for that or something, honestly not sure where almost any of this comes from...some parts sound a little DoC-ish (or maybe FFX-2 final boss-ish even), there are a couple hints of some Sephiroth theme here and there, more later on, but largely it sounds like it's from some other game series (so did the disney jugnle adventure song in Gongaga). Really missed any hint of Birth of a God, doubtful we'll see this form again, so that's probably just gone or it will be used oddly. Anyway, at least the final portion is damn amazing, back to the usual amazing innovation on amazing Uematsu core :P
It'd be interesting if they were taking into consideration the mistranslation that is "Bizarro Sephiroth", considering a more correct translation would be "Rebirth Sephiroth", or as Rebirth puts it, "Sephiroth Reborn"
He was only called Bizarro in the western translations in jp he is Sephiroth Rebirth

The theme itself is a combination of One Winged Angel, bits of Birth of A God (subtle, but in the violins in some parts), and the Whisper's/Arbiters of Fate theme. It fits given that Sephiroth is effectively taking the place of the Arbiter of Fate. He tricked Cloud and the others into killing the leaders of the Whispers, all so he could swoop in and take control of them in order to poison the lifestream and gain control of fate. Multiple timelines were made, which eventually gave him more access to negative human emotion.
I agree. This problem runs throughout the soundtrack, they just got bored with the direction and went in another one, got bored with that one and went in another one... no one herding the cats creating generic cacophony rather than excellence. So many short falls in this title.

Tbf all you do is roll away from garbage and hit him with a limit from Cloud in the last phase. It does not take a whole lot of brain power to achieve that

@youwatch2muchtv as far as I'm aware, the only elemental check he has is during his Reborn Phase when his wings change elements and you have to counter element. Even in that phase you can get away with raw damage (just as OP does.) There's no elemental dps check for Masamune or his wing during Whisper Cannon or Whisper Whirlwind. You just avoid those attacks. And as far as I'm aware, you can't dps down Masamune or his Wing in enough time to clear their HP bars before he moves on to the next assault. There's literally 0 indication of an elemental DPS check in the last phase of this fight when its Cloud and Aerith V Sephiroth as depicted in this video.

And you use magic damage to kill masamune and sephiroths wing. So you wrote all that not knowing what I said, as far as im aware 😂

On the one hand, disappointing, but on the other hand understandable. It's likely being held back for Part 3, and I wouldn't be surprised if OWA gets mixed into the song in some manner.
