Good insights into the game and a good video. I will mention what others have brought up, and that is Gloomhaven helper. That app does so much work and makes everything run along at a great pace. I Also recommend the Gloomhaven Campaign Tracker app. It keeps track of the scenarios for you neatly, as well as the city and road event decks, items unlocked from prosperity, donations, characters, reputations, basically anything you'd ever want tracked. Those 2 apps make the game so much smoother and I will be grabbing their counterparts for Frosthaven as soon as they're/it's released.

Helper has been discontinued (rights issues/drama, feel free to google).
I think you can still look up some slightly "yo-ho" downloads. I've started using Gloomhaven Full Stack, mainly to simulate monster and attack decks. But it can handle full campaign tracking.
Official Frosthaven app exists. But it costs money and is still very much work-in-progress. I'll look into it when Frosthaven gets a retail release.

My gf, her roommate and I all play GH together and I must say that there are some things that you can do to mitigate the setup/teardown time. Doesn't matter much if you've finished but to anyone reading this, take note. Stop by hobby lobby or michaels or whatever craft store you have and get some plastic organizers to use for monsters and terrain. Secondly, get the gloomhaven helpler app on a tablet or phone to be dedicated to use during a scenario. We went from 20 minutes of setup to maybe 5 during a scenario. Not having to find the monster sleeves, condition tokens, monster decks, etc saves an incredible amount of time.

Just started Gloomhaven a few days ago- it has been a really incredible experience and I’ve been obsessed with watching videos about it after any given game.
I’m just here to be an echo of what “Ayy Mate” said.
I,too, appreciate your transparency, it takes a lot of courage to be “weak” by “societal standards”.
It was very brave of you to share your feelings about what had happened to you and I’m happy to hear you have something to see as a part of their time spent with you and not just a reminder of something you have lost.
Keep your chin up- they would want you to do that.
I’ve been in a PTSD/depressive state for nearly a decade and I’m not ready to be as courageous as you are. It’s commendable.
I respect you for sharing your feelings, then following up with a blooper reel.
I hope to be like you some day.

Great advice on the changes! This game is such a grind; I had to change so much to enjoy this game. I have similar PTSD and wife sep issues; after several yrs of depression I quit drinking and started working out. Traumatic Release Exercises made a huge difference getting rid of stored physical stress that led to fight or flight mental shate. The last exercise where you lift your knees and shake is the only real TRE exercise you need after a while ... I stopped having episodes within a month. Got TRE for free from the Army, so easy to look up I think. Still lonely and hate playing Gloomhaven alone. Anyway, good luck and keep playing.

We started playing Gloomhaven maybe a half a year ago, with our life in mind we have time to play one time each week 3-4 hour. This will conclude to around one scenario per week, so what you said about the money problem we have to. We don't play with that you can replay a scenario if we have complete it. If we forget, or are force to leave, a chest unopen and leave the money on the ground they are gone for ever in that playthrough. We never had so much money that one could upgrade a card, maybe a level 1 card and on top a level 2. But the higher card is so stupid overprices for the game style we are playing. One card I was interesting in level up would cost me around 375 gold, and that is just a stupid amount of money.
Also one got a personal goal / mission that they should find an axe and with it defeat monster. And when we can't replay scenarios we did never find it. After a while we gave up on that and the player in question got to retire anyway, we just made up a mission for that player to complete.
Controlling the summons was also a problem for us, maybe not when there were monster on the board, but when there was no monster on the board they just stood still on there spot and did nothing. They could at least had the player that summoned them as there target for the move action.
Then there are a few things that could have been explained better in the manual, that we were reading wrong and after a couple of month got right. But that it's natural for a new board game.
Otherwise we love it, hard to think that we would play it again though. It's one of the longer board game I have played for a long time. Legend of Andor, Arkham Horror, etc can't even come close, though an Arkam Horror campaign can be pretty long with the right circumstances. Love that no one need to be a GM, the cards make every character feel unique with there own playstyle. Went from an all out damage dealer to a full support, and needed to change my tactics quite much. This group I'm playing in would play Gloomhaven a second time I think, but I'm sure I would love to learn out this board game, with maybe a few house rules for ease of access, to a new group.
What I think that strived us to play more, is that we unlock new character. More so then the story, that was as you said pretty weak and somewhat confusing. It's a great system with personal mission, and personal goal in scenarios to great a sense of drama in the group. But then again, we were more in for completing the scenario then our personal goal.
Gloomhaven have set a new standard to these kind of games, and I was hopeing that Fantasy Flights "Descent: Legends of the Dark" would follow this kind of play instead of going for the style they had in the older games. But I have heard, and seen, that it's not the case. It's a shame, would love to have more game who played out like Gloomhaven.
We still have the expansion, Forgotten Circles, to sink our teeth into, and the Jaws of the Lion prologue. So we may have a half a year until we complete it. Myself just unlocked the music note character yesterday so I hope I have a couple of great adventure a head of me with that character.
Loved the video and bloopers in the end :)

A great way to organize the game is using Plano fishing tackle boxes. Search for "gloomhaven YASS" on google and check it out. It's not expensive and saves searching through all the bits. I used that and an accordion folder from my kids discarded school supplies to organize the map tiles alphabetically. My wife and I can setup in about 5 minutes.

That said, I divorced my wife of 20 years and even though I knew it was necessary, the loss was real. Hang in there, brother. Get a dog (or a cat as I did) to comfort you during the hard times and you will meet someone amazing, if not now, then after this Covid crap is over. Your video made me cry at the end. Our main house rule has been that all remaining gold and only gold is considered "picked up". If you loot one you get the level bonus. If it is "picked up" on "your way out of the cave/dungeon/whatever", it is only ever worth 1. We have been starting our retired characters right at level one no matter what. It really is fun leveling a new person and getting to know them.

Shortly before I lost my gaming group I did pick up Forgotten Circles, and we managed to play through the first couple of scenarios before everything fell apart on me. The new Aesther Diviner is a very cool character, although we had only just begun to explore her potential. I really liked the way that parts of a scenario were scattered throughout different pages of the scenario book, because even though it made it slightly more fiddly to play through a scenario, it was fun to not have any idea what was behind a closed door! Over all, anybody who enjoyed the Gloomhaven base game would definitely enjoy the Forgotten Circles expansion. You don't progressively become better, you start off as the best version of yourself and have nothing to look forward to. Starting w so much gold means you can get very expensive enhancement ( say adding curse on a huge AOE) and the rest of the scenario is basically cakewalk. No strategy needed whatsoever

House Rules always trump box rules .. historically speaking many box rules are ..Broken .. and need house tweaking to even be workable .. being a solo player doesn't make that process any easier ( you could think it would) but if your going to tweak rules too much it can become a slippery slope, having more brains in on the decisions would be a huge help, I decided just get out a die and roll it ... even I win.. odd I loose and leave the game in the box... Not Gloomhaven, l did play 10ish scenarios solo , and kind of realized how much more fun it would be playing with other humans and lost interest in solo play . My pick for all time favorite game is and has been the original Warhammer Quest .. which is similar in many ways to Gloomhaven .. that game still has a huge following , that it throughly deserves ..if I had folks to play with I might "borrow" tiles and pieces from Gloomhaven to use for Warhammer Quest....nicely presented subjective over view of a awesome effort by one man to bring a massive board game to the table .having a permanent spot reserved for Gloomhaven would cut way down on set up tear down time , but few folks have or are willing to dedicate a table to a ..game .. Thank Josh that was 20 minutes of time I'm not requesting a refund for 😉✌️

Your house rules really inspired me to create a few of my own: enhancements are way too slow!
I'm still working on the spreadsheet with all of them, but please let me know if you want to see them. I'll share the link once I'm finished tomorrow.
    As it stands, I have:
    1) percentage discount on enhancements if they're on loss effects (full cost if repeatable)
    2) gold vouchers every time you reach a level that is below the prosperity minimum (incentivizing that low level play!)
    3) elites drop X + 2 gold tokens
    4) any loss enhancement doesn't count towards your class maximum
    5) draw 3 battle goals, choose 1 for checkmark, 1 for a bonus 5 gold, and then ditch the 3rd. Gives you a little extra income for an increased challenge of 2 goals
    6) also made a house rule where the party adds their remaining cards at end of scenario together, then they can spent 1 to move 2 squares from the center of the room. When the party chooses, they can use remaining number of cards to perform loot X from that hex. And this is shared between the party.
    7) loot in general is semi-shared. Players keep half, rounded down, of whatever they personally loot. Rest goes to party and is then redistributed equally.
And I have a whole separate set of houserules for permadeath which let's you keep fighting after you're in the brink of death, and even lets come back with disabilities and continue playing. Also if your party wipes, you're all captured and need to be rescued by new characters :D

    • @FlarkeFiasco

Just wanted to thank you for the inspiration, and I hope you're doing better now after some time has passed. I think the reason it hurts the most to think of the memories of gloomhaven so fondly is BECAUSE it's so good, and so cooperative, and novel. You bond over how good the damn thing is, so it really just isn't the same without the people you used to play it with. Part of it is the game. And part of it is how good the game is at bringing people together.
I feel like that was the vibe you were giving off when you said it still is a 10 for you. And how that 10 just cannot be touched or devalued.
