      That's not the true reason, it was exposed on another video. There are so many scammers that they compete with each other and it's very easy to happen because if a phone number or other contact is leaked to them as an easy target: it's usually leaked to many call centers.

    I actually got a scammer to admit to it on accident. It was pretty spectacular. I held the first guy on the line for about forty minutes, going through the whole shpeal and essentially pretending I was an idiot who can't use a computer (the best was pretending I didn't know where my 'windows' or 'control' keys were). Eventually I got transferred to the 'manager' and when he answered he was like 'Ma'am, do you know why we're calling" and I responded with "Yeah. It's a scam, right?" and he goes, "Yes ma'am. Wait. No? Wait!"

    • @brittanysmith7281
      @brittanysmith7281 2 ปีที่แล้ว +698

      I wish this was true. I'm a Target employee, and yes, we are trained to watch out for these scams, but it's a very tight line we have to walk when asking about scams. Because most people won't believe they're being scammed, and it can take a lot of coaxing on our part about why the guests/victims are buying these cards. They're coached on what to say, like we heard in the video when the scammer said to say it's a wedding present. But (for me at least) there's no better feeling than when we do manage to stop the scams. I've stopped several over the years. I remember one where this poor woman started crying and gave me a hug because I stopped her from buying the cards. She walked into the store, on the phone and I overheard her say "okay I'm at Target now what" and I heard her say gift cards and my mind was like... you are not walking away from me come here. I told her to hang up the phone and asked her what was going on. I remember asking her if she knew this person and she said no. Her phone starts going off and I ask her if I can answer it. I say "hi I'm a target team member and I'm just asking the reason for these gift cards." He responded with "I'm her son" I look at the woman, still on the phone, and I'm like "Ma'am, is this your son?" When she responds no I was like "Have a great day sir" and hung up the phone. One of the best feelings ever. The woman was so thankful. She left that store more informed about these scams.

    Recently I was in a Walmart and overheard two young employees talking about an elderly lady who was very upset and crying because the Walmart employee recognized the signs that she was being scammed and refused to sell her so many gift cards. This poor woman was convinced that if she didn't buy them that she would be in jail by sundown! There was about six employees surrounding her , trying to comfort her, and someone called the police. I was being nosy so I hung around a bit to see what happened. A few minutes later the woman's son arrived and gave her a huge hug and they walked out together. It broke my heart to see how scared she was , and the relief on her face when she saw her son, and the Walmart employees being so kind and helpful.

They support their parents and help their siblings get an education. Years ago I knew one guy who shared a small apartment with several other people, and he only spent enough money to eat, pay rent, and survive. Scamming old people for their last dime is nothing new. Dragnet once adapted the investigation a scam where two swindlers masqueraded as bank examiners in need of marked bills to catch an embezzler, targeting elderly pensioners with bad eyesight to avoid recognition. In finally nabbing them, the cops represented by Friday and Gannon actually helped the potential mark--a lifelong fan of detective fiction--cross off something on her bucket list; she had "always wanted to be in on a pinch."
