What a great list, brah. Top notch. I'd forgotten some of these games. Of course, after the Genesis hit 20 million active consoles (not counting the Nomad), third party devs pushed this machine toward its limits to compete. Great machine. Great platform!

ive been watching retro game videos of all sorts for the past few years and you really knocked this out of the park. great list with it being personalized, the commentary and how its delivered, even the clips... i swear everyone else is just taking their gameplay clios from some stock footage source. you show gameplay moments and scenes that no one else shows and youre not scared to play ghe game music. love it man hope to see lots more from u

classic video.. my favorite genesis game is comix zone.. i got it back in like 95 or 96.. its just a beautiful game and nothing can compete with it in my opinion!

Missed outon the nhl 96 back in the day in college we played the sheet out of 95 so many great memories in our house. We would play that before we all went out for the night and then come back play that and Sonic drunk as sheet. so much fun.
in terms of brawlers, Streets of Rage 2 is EXTREMELY dificult to top: from the graphics, to the sound, to the music, to it's overall presentation. I'd argue Capcom actually DID top it in 1994 with ALIENS VS PREDATOR the arcade game. If you haven't played it, you gotta try it.

We didnt have a ton of sega games but Road Rash, Sonic 2 and NHL96 got played the most

I'm a Nintendo fan since my childhood: It was magic, NES was my first console.. and then the Gameboy, SNES, N64. In the same time, I admit that I was also jealous of my Sega friends because of The Ninja (MasterSystem), Sonic and Quackshot (Megadrive). I also remember that I was so enthousiast when I saw the Jurassic Park and Moonwalker games, playable in my theatre. My first Sega console was the Game Gear with Mortal Kombat and NBA JAM, sooooo much fun. And later I came back to Sega with the Saturn, that I loved and defended against Playstation. Nintendo, Sega, SNK, Nec had great devises with a lot of differences and specialities. I'm so happy to have known these wonderful periods. Anyway, I admit that now I play much more on my Megadrive than on Super Nintendo :) Getting older, I like so much the Sega spirit in arcade/action/sport games

Growing up I only had Vanilla SF2 on SNES. I got a Genesis after a SNES and got SCE, turned the hyper speed all the way up, and was like WTF THIS IS WHAT IVE BEEN MISSING!!!!!
I loved Airbuster on Sega Genesis! Loved it even more than Gradius 3 from SNES. The chaos in some sections of Airbuster was SO FUN!
Imagine the strike games fully remade now with all the dedestruction and missions.

Being a good deal older then you I played Sonic, the first one, my senior year of High School. So for me, just based on pure nostalgia alone, I absolutely love that game. I have played the others but, by then my gaming days were coming to an end. Until I got into retro gaming several years back.

Decent list as a SNES lover back in the day, and now hacking my Genesis Mini to play games I missed out on. Gotta stop using the filter on the emulators! So far MUSHA, Skeleton Krew and Gauntelt IV are my favorites.

contra hard corps is ultra hard... i turn it on and my character is dead in 30 seconds
Yeah tell me about it. Contra games are no joke!
General tip: When playing hard old school games, try to beat the Japanese version of the game first. Also set them to easy, and max out your lives.
For example, in Contra Hard Corps, the Japanese version gives you a life bar and unlimited continues.
Come back to the American version and will be amazed how much better you are once beating the Japanese version.

Mine was the Atari Vcs which i got for Christmas in 77'but id have to agree that this system came out in 89' when me and my future wife would play all night well on weekends anyway and then my son was born in 91' and reminds me how much fun i had at the time playing video games only other time u had closento that much fun was at 13 or 14 when i completed my C64 setup
You bring up the point I've heard again and again for 30 years. Games just ran smother and faster on the genesis than the snes.

The Immortal, Truxton, Arnold Palmer Golf, Ghouls & Ghosts, Forgotten Worlds. For those of us who got ours in 1989. Are a few early ones we really liked. Great list however it’s definitely not mine. Many great ones! The Sega Genesis library is so vast & great. However there are many SNES greats as well. I love both systems actually.
I love your list. This is a REAL top Genesis TH-cam games list. You can tell it’s from a proud Genesis owner and fan. History has been rewritten on TH-cam when it comes to the Genesis (Gunstar Heroes is the greatest Genesis game… SNES was more popular…. DK Country was legendary while Vectorman was trash…. Today’s terrible sports game mean that 16 bit sports game are no longer top tier games…. I could go on and on). But videos like these restore the facts and the truth. Seeing NHL and Street Fighter in a top 5 is so refreshing. Great video man. This was how it really was. Not post AVGN Genesis history.

Sad, I picked up street fight 2 championship edition 30 years later for $12 in the case, worth so much more.
For me it was dune the battle for arrakis, shining force. Phantasy star two, ecco the dolphin and of course toejam and earl

I think you either owned the system late in its life or you came to it as an adult based on your games list.
I played Genesis in 1992 initially. Then we got it for ourselves in January 1993. It was at it's peak in popularity.
The music of Shinobi 3 🔥, well... Shinobi 3 is 🔥 But the music of that game, wow.
Phantasy star is just great, the entire series are just so original and pure, top 5 at least xD
94 was the year I turned 9 and the last year I legitimately liked until I turned to Christ nearly 30 years later. Great list without all the usual suspects. Video definitely needs more views.

Yeah, you're right. NHL 95 is absolutely great! I played it first. But I came to prefer the faster gameplay of NHL 96!

One of the few lists of best games on Genesis that I could respect simply because it's not anachronistic. Hell yeah about sport games star the console... hell yeah about so many EA games to be remembered... the only thing that, IMHO, is way of reality is that no SF2 version is the TOP1.

Got mine in 89' with Altered Beast but then also got the Super Nintendo when that came out had to have the Mario games but other than that really I enjoyed and still do The Sega Genesis system and games better just because i was older maybe i was 20 in 89' so i lived gory games fast shooters action platformers and to me no system did it better than the Sega Genesis at least in cartridge

Why does shining force always get overlooked
While I agree with Sonic 3 & Knuckles being number 1, number 2 should have been Crusader of Centy; it's the quintessential Zelda knockoff for the Genesis.
solid list.... sf2 was trash though on the genesis. Biggest purchase regret as a child. ($74 in the 90s!)

You're right about everything you said about EC, but you forgot to mention that it plays like ass. The AI is absolutely terrible and the moveset execution is janky. I remember wanting this game to be good so badly back then. Otherwise a decent but flawed list, missing obvious bangers like Rocket Knight Adventures, Alien Soldier, Shining Force, Comix Zone, Ranger-X, Thunder Force 4, MUSHA and Herzog Zwei, that are better than at least half the games on your list and would give it a bit more variety than having 5 fighting games on there. Having zero shmups in a top list about a system famous for its shmups has got to be a sin.
