What a great list, brah. Top notch. I'd forgotten some of these games. Of course, after the Genesis hit 20 million active consoles (not counting the Nomad), third party devs pushed this machine toward its limits to compete. Great machine. Great platform!

Just thinking back to the Mall atmosphere, arcades, miniature golf, going to the movies, no cellphones, cartoons and SNES/Sega with dozens of games released every year, all better and better ever year.
ive been watching retro game videos of all sorts for the past few years and you really knocked this out of the park. great list with it being personalized, the commentary and how its delivered, even the clips... i swear everyone else is just taking their gameplay clios from some stock footage source. you show gameplay moments and scenes that no one else shows and youre not scared to play ghe game music. love it man hope to see lots more from u

Yes, I like a lot of games on this list, but I was sure Comix Zone be in top 10, top 5.. that game was crazy... never beat it as a kid, but I did as adult on an Xbox 360 Sega Collection!

Pretty Good List. I think I still like Desert Strike best out of the Strikes. I have nostalgic vibes for Taz-Mania and Chakan, as they were games my father gave me, upon returning from a business trip. Also, I laugh at Cyborg Justice alot. It's ridiculous how the robots strut like Mick Jagger.

Eternal Champions! YES! So few people actually know this game! LOVED IT! Road Rash! SWEET! My brother and I would play this game and drink beer and howl with laughter at how bad we were playing! Now I want to hook up my old Sega! Thank You!
Missed outon the nhl 96 back in the day in college we played the sheet out of 95 so many great memories in our house. We would play that before we all went out for the night and then come back play that and Sonic drunk as sheet. so much fun.
I love your list. This is a REAL top Genesis TH-cam games list. You can tell it’s from a proud Genesis owner and fan. History has been rewritten on TH-cam when it comes to the Genesis (Gunstar Heroes is the greatest Genesis game… SNES was more popular…. DK Country was legendary while Vectorman was trash…. Today’s terrible sports game mean that 16 bit sports game are no longer top tier games…. I could go on and on). But videos like these restore the facts and the truth. Seeing NHL and Street Fighter in a top 5 is so refreshing. Great video man. This was how it really was. Not post AVGN Genesis history.
Great list, just discovered this video. Been playing my Genesis mini a lot and SF2:SCE still rocks. Growing up I only had Vanilla SF2 on SNES. I got a Genesis after a SNES and got SCE, turned the hyper speed all the way up, and was like WTF THIS IS WHAT IVE BEEN MISSING!!!!!
Great list! 1995 was the best year of my life. I've played and beaten all these games except eternal champions( hardest fighting games I've ever played) and the RPGs. I love Sega
Fantastic video. Another Sonic thing I loved was putting Sonic 2 on top on Sonic and Knuckles and playing as Knuckles in Sonic 2. The replay value was off the charts! 👍
Decent list as a SNES lover back in the day, and now hacking my Genesis Mini to play games I missed out on. Gotta stop using the filter on the emulators! So far MUSHA, Skeleton Krew and Gauntelt IV are my favorites.
in terms of brawlers, Streets of Rage 2 is EXTREMELY dificult to top: from the graphics, to the sound, to the music, to it's overall presentation. I'd argue Capcom actually DID top it in 1994 with ALIENS VS PREDATOR the arcade game. If you haven't played it, you gotta try it.
Being a good deal older then you I played Sonic, the first one, my senior year of High School. So for me, just based on pure nostalgia alone, I absolutely love that game. I have played the others but, by then my gaming days were coming to an end. Until I got into retro gaming several years back. Great video, your excitement is contagious.
That sonic & knuckles cartridge was unique AF, you could connect sonic 2&3 to it to play as knuckles (my fave) in those games. Great review man, enthusiasm was off the charts!
I'm a Nintendo fan since my childhood: It was magic, NES was my first console.. and then the Gameboy, SNES, N64. In the same time, I admit that I was also jealous of my Sega friends because of The Ninja (MasterSystem), Sonic and Quackshot (Megadrive). I also remember that I was so enthousiast when I saw the Jurassic Park and Moonwalker games, playable in my theatre. My first Sega console was the Game Gear with Mortal Kombat and NBA JAM, sooooo much fun. And later I came back to Sega with the Saturn, that I loved and defended against Playstation. Nintendo, Sega, SNK, Nec had great devises with a lot of differences and specialities. I'm so happy to have known these wonderful periods. Anyway, I admit that now I play much more on my Megadrive than on Super Nintendo :) Getting older, I like so much the Sega spirit in arcade/action/sport games
Great list. In my humble opinion, missing: -Strider (bc it was such an early accomplishment 1989) -Maximum Carnage (so hard but rewarding) -Toejam & Earl (trippy and complex for 1991)
Pretty solid list of Genesis games! I enjoyed a ton of these titles as a kid. The only title I was hoping to see was the OG Rocket Knight Adventures! Great video! 🙌

One of the reasons those from 'Treasure' left Konami(besides the motorola 68000 processor being necessary for their invisioned games in mind) was because they felt the higher ups at Konami were way too biased towards Nintendo and felt they were being unfair towards other competitors on the market who had just as much potential to show the gaming industry during the 16-bit war!
yeah back in the day games like final fantasy and phantasy star were my go to games because my parents weren't going to buy several games for me, so I had to pick the RPGs that took longer to finish :)
Great video! It amazes me that all of these best of genesis videos never mention some of my favorites of the generation which are Rocket Knight, Comix Zone, Cyborg Justice, Combat Cars, X-men 2 Clone Wars and Adventures of Batman and Robin. I was more of a SNES kid, but Genesis had some good stuff too!
The Immortal, Truxton, Arnold Palmer Golf, Ghouls & Ghosts, Forgotten Worlds. For those of us who got ours in 1989. Are a few early ones we really liked. Great list however it’s definitely not mine. Many great ones! The Sega Genesis library is so vast & great. However there are many SNES greats as well. I love both systems actually.
WOW!! - You really sell the Genesis/Megadrive and remind us how great it was/IS!!! I had a Megadrive and a Snes at the time, and whilst I really liked my Snes, I LOVED MY MEGADRIVE!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow. This list is characterized by what's absent from it. Good that you got Earthworm Jim, Sonic and a Mortal Combat game (although I would have chosen the original), but where's Toejam and Earl? Where's Mike Ditka Power Football? Where's Ren and Stimpy? Those are just off the top of my head.
General tip: When playing hard old school games, try to beat the Japanese version of the game first. Also set them to easy, and max out your lives. For example, in Contra Hard Corps, the Japanese version gives you a life bar and unlimited continues. Come back to the American version and will be amazed how much better you are once beating the Japanese version.

Mine was the Atari Vcs which i got for Christmas in 77'but id have to agree that this system came out in 89' when me and my future wife would play all night well on weekends anyway and then my son was born in 91' and reminds me how much fun i had at the time playing video games only other time u had closento that much fun was at 13 or 14 when i completed my C64 setup
94 was the year I turned 9 and the last year I legitimately liked until I turned to Christ nearly 30 years later. Great list without all the usual suspects. Video definitely needs more views. ✌️ 👽 👍
We had MK3 in our senior's lounge in high school (and a pool table and a ping pong table abd like 6 other arcade games, and it was right next tk the gym which will come back in this quick story later).... Bubble bobble was somewhat popular in 95/96 when I was there, and people waited to play it, but mk3? My god You'd pray u got there at a time when maybe there was "only" just 6 other people next to play lol... fights over who was next, saying "forget it" if a certain kid or 2 was already playing cuz odds of him losing were slim at best.. I'd get a quick workout in at the gym riggt there, and yell "I'm after so and so!" but you'd see kids FLYING in from the gym when they realized they were up, all sweaty and shti lol... that entire senior year, that game was the shti, crowds around waiting or cheering if those unbeatable kids actually lost lol Loved that damn game
One of the few lists of best games on Genesis that I could respect simply because it's not anachronistic. Hell yeah about sport games star the console... hell yeah about so many EA games to be remembered... the only thing that, IMHO, is way of reality is that no SF2 version is the TOP1. Cheers!
Love Sega. But was a SNES kid. Im Glad I can now enjoy what I missed out in back in the day. As for the best console ever? With no nostalgia or retro love probably 360, the last generation before games as a service first day patches and stupid dlc prices went completely bonkers and games just keep repeating themselves. That said, Sega Genesis has a special magic to it, unique to nothing else. ❤
I have Sonic 1 2 3 and Knuckels at home for my Sega Megadrive and I have to say that Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckels, stand out very much and are definitely worth a look, but there are still many games that would be very worth seeing on the platform, with it was then Fußball Sport Gonge yes very fond and there was on the Megadrive International Super Star Socker, a little later the deluxe version was a bit better, but I didn't think at the time that the version would run almost 1 to 1 to the Super NES version on the Megadrive. I definitely can't argue against Nights being in the top spot. My surprise is that D's sequel Enemy Zero didn't make it even to the low end of the list. I guess I forgive its flaws more than others.

Pretty Good List. I think I still like Desert Strike best out of the Strikes. I have nostalgic vibes for Taz-Mania and Chakan, as they were games my father gave me, upon returning from a business trip. Also, I laugh at Cyborg Justice alot. It's ridiculous how the robots strut like Mick Jagger.

Missed outon the nhl 96 back in the day in college we played the sheet out of 95 so many great memories in our house. We would play that before we all went out for the night and then come back play that and Sonic drunk as sheet. so much fun.
I love your list. This is a REAL top Genesis TH-cam games list. You can tell it’s from a proud Genesis owner and fan. History has been rewritten on TH-cam when it comes to the Genesis (Gunstar Heroes is the greatest Genesis game… SNES was more popular…. DK Country was legendary while Vectorman was trash…. Today’s terrible sports game mean that 16 bit sports game are no longer top tier games…. I could go on and on). But videos like these restore the facts and the truth. Seeing NHL and Street Fighter in a top 5 is so refreshing. Great video man. This was how it really was. Not post AVGN Genesis history.

We didnt have a ton of sega games but Road Rash, Sonic 2 and NHL96 got played the most

Growing up I only had Vanilla SF2 on SNES. I got a Genesis after a SNES and got SCE, turned the hyper speed all the way up, and was like WTF THIS IS WHAT IVE BEEN MISSING!!!!!
I loved Airbuster on Sega Genesis! Loved it even more than Gradius 3 from SNES. The chaos in some sections of Airbuster was SO FUN!

Fantastic video. Another Sonic thing I loved was putting Sonic 2 on top on Sonic and Knuckles and playing as Knuckles in Sonic 2. The replay value was off the charts! 👍
Decent list as a SNES lover back in the day, and now hacking my Genesis Mini to play games I missed out on. Gotta stop using the filter on the emulators! So far MUSHA, Skeleton Krew and Gauntelt IV are my favorites.
in terms of brawlers, Streets of Rage 2 is EXTREMELY dificult to top: from the graphics, to the sound, to the music, to it's overall presentation. I'd argue Capcom actually DID top it in 1994 with ALIENS VS PREDATOR the arcade game. If you haven't played it, you gotta try it.
Being a good deal older then you I played Sonic, the first one, my senior year of High School. So for me, just based on pure nostalgia alone, I absolutely love that game. I have played the others but, by then my gaming days were coming to an end. Until I got into retro gaming several years back.

That sonic & knuckles cartridge was unique AF, you could connect sonic 2&3 to it to play as knuckles (my fave) in those games. Great review man, enthusiasm was off the charts!

I'm a Nintendo fan since my childhood: It was magic, NES was my first console.. and then the Gameboy, SNES, N64. In the same time, I admit that I was also jealous of my Sega friends because of The Ninja (MasterSystem), Sonic and Quackshot (Megadrive). I also remember that I was so enthousiast when I saw the Jurassic Park and Moonwalker games, playable in my theatre. My first Sega console was the Game Gear with Mortal Kombat and NBA JAM, sooooo much fun. And later I came back to Sega with the Saturn, that I loved and defended against Playstation. Nintendo, Sega, SNK, Nec had great devises with a lot of differences and specialities. I'm so happy to have known these wonderful periods. Anyway, I admit that now I play much more on my Megadrive than on Super Nintendo :) Getting older, I like so much the Sega spirit in arcade/action/sport games

-Strider (bc it was such an early accomplishment 1989)
-Maximum Carnage (so hard but rewarding)
-Toejam & Earl (trippy and complex for 1991)

One of the reasons those from 'Treasure' left Konami(besides the motorola 68000 processor being necessary for their invisioned games in mind) was because they felt the higher ups at Konami were way too biased towards Nintendo and felt they were being unfair towards other competitors on the market who had just as much potential to show the gaming industry during the 16-bit war!
Phantasy star is just great, the entire series are just so original and pure, top 5 at least xD
yeah back in the day games like final fantasy and phantasy star were my go to games because my parents weren't going to buy several games for me, so I had to pick the RPGs that took longer to finish :)

Great video! It amazes me that all of these best of genesis videos never mention some of my favorites of the generation which are Rocket Knight, Comix Zone, Cyborg Justice, Combat Cars, X-men 2 Clone Wars and Adventures of Batman and Robin. I was more of a SNES kid, but Genesis had some good stuff too!

The Immortal, Truxton, Arnold Palmer Golf, Ghouls & Ghosts, Forgotten Worlds. For those of us who got ours in 1989. Are a few early ones we really liked. Great list however it’s definitely not mine. Many great ones! The Sega Genesis library is so vast & great. However there are many SNES greats as well. I love both systems actually.

Wow. This list is characterized by what's absent from it. Good that you got Earthworm Jim, Sonic and a Mortal Combat game (although I would have chosen the original), but where's Toejam and Earl? Where's Mike Ditka Power Football? Where's Ren and Stimpy? Those are just off the top of my head.

Yeah tell me about it. Contra games are no joke!
General tip: When playing hard old school games, try to beat the Japanese version of the game first. Also set them to easy, and max out your lives.
For example, in Contra Hard Corps, the Japanese version gives you a life bar and unlimited continues.
Come back to the American version and will be amazed how much better you are once beating the Japanese version.

Mine was the Atari Vcs which i got for Christmas in 77'but id have to agree that this system came out in 89' when me and my future wife would play all night well on weekends anyway and then my son was born in 91' and reminds me how much fun i had at the time playing video games only other time u had closento that much fun was at 13 or 14 when i completed my C64 setup
I started getting into KMFDM win. This game came out, and I thought streets of rage three was far better than the others.
94 was the year I turned 9 and the last year I legitimately liked until I turned to Christ nearly 30 years later. Great list without all the usual suspects. Video definitely needs more views.

We had MK3 in our senior's lounge in high school (and a pool table and a ping pong table abd like 6 other arcade games, and it was right next tk the gym which will come back in this quick story later)....
Bubble bobble was somewhat popular in 95/96 when I was there, and people waited to play it, but mk3?

You'd pray u got there at a time when maybe there was "only" just 6 other people next to play lol... fights over who was next, saying "forget it" if a certain kid or 2 was already playing cuz odds of him losing were slim at best..
I'd get a quick workout in at the gym riggt there, and yell "I'm after so and so!" but you'd see kids FLYING in from the gym when they realized they were up, all sweaty and shti lol... that entire senior year, that game was the shti, crowds around waiting or cheering if those unbeatable kids actually lost lol

One of the few lists of best games on Genesis that I could respect simply because it's not anachronistic. Hell yeah about sport games star the console... hell yeah about so many EA games to be remembered... the only thing that, IMHO, is way of reality is that no SF2 version is the TOP1.

Love Sega. But was a SNES kid. Im Glad I can now enjoy what I missed out in back in the day.
As for the best console ever? With no nostalgia or retro love probably 360, the last generation before games as a service first day patches and stupid dlc prices went completely bonkers and games just keep repeating themselves.
That said, Sega Genesis has a special magic to it, unique to nothing else. ❤
I think the MD/Genesis version of MK2 is grittier, I love SNES/Arcade versions as well but Genesis/Megadrive version is not bad at all
I have Sonic 1 2 3 and Knuckels at home for my Sega Megadrive and I have to say that Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckels, stand out very much and are definitely worth a look, but there are still many games that would be very worth seeing on the platform, with it was then Fußball Sport Gonge yes very fond and there was on the Megadrive International Super Star Socker, a little later the deluxe version was a bit better, but I didn't think at the time that the version would run almost 1 to 1 to the Super NES version on the Megadrive. But it is really a very nice gaming system of its time. Verri NIce Video of Sega Genesis/Megadrive.

Shadowrun has to be on here for me. I love the SNES version too, but not as much as the Genesis.
