Bret Hart just had a brilliant mind when it came to putting matches together.
That's why he got set up
Always thought the Bret Hart Steve Austin feud was one of the best in WWE/F history. It was just awesome two guys who worked great together. Their chemistry is udeniable and their matches were five stars.
My Dad used to play that Hart vs Austin match from WrestleMania 13 to guests who were wrestling skeptics, Austin “passing out from the blood” instead of submitting it was genius. Still my favorite match of all time!
Bret Hart put Austin over and was still victorious keeping his reputation intact. Brilliant.

I would put Austin’s bloody face screaming in pain up there with the most iconic images in the history of the company. As well as JR’s call of “AUSTIN NEVER GAVE UP!”

Gareth Revell I agree that was great stuff. But watching NJPW the past few years has been a real treat. Logical storylines, great characters, and exceptional wrestling. Give it a look if you haven’t.

The absolute best “Money Shot” ever.
Bret's matches were unlike anyone else's. The guy was seriously a legit artist, especially looking back. Who the hell else ever had that storytelling talent like he did? Beginning, middle, end. He perfected that. Just so many fucking straight up masterpieces that were created because of his mindset. People used to say / still say he took wrestling too seriously, yeah, of course he did, artists tend to take their work really fucking seriously. As a 6 year old kid the second I saw Perfect vs Bret I instantly became a fan of wrestling. I was mesmerized by that match and looking back, it was mostly because of Bret's storytelling ability and the appeal of the story being told. The next day I was wetting my hair and wearing my cousins hand me down leather jacket pretending to be the Hitman.
In this match Brett didn't think Stone Cold passing out looked very good for SCSA so he's the one that added the color, that way SC would look truly taken to the limit b4 going down. Brett was kinda like Taker, in that he knew how to make both men look good in the end.
Bret's best was when they booked the finish (usually at Bret's insistence) in a manner that you didn't see coming, but totally made sense. And it still made the opponent look strong. Who was he up against ('Taker, maybe? Can't believe I'm having a hard time remembering) when he did that out of the blue run up the corner, then float-over off the top turnbuckle to get the shoulders down? I remember everyone going "Whoa...holy shit, he got him!"

Totally agree with all of that. I was and still am a huge Hitman fan. As a young kid in the early 90s, he was one of the main reasons I loved wrestling. Brett's selling and storytelling was top notch. To me as a kid he made it look so real with his selling. I actually thought he was really getting beat up. His promos are better than people remember. Yes his best time cutting promos was 97 but most of the time he was a decent talker. Anyway I think so and looking back I feel they hold up.
Bret had been the face of the WWF for years at that point. He was the guy they had to keep going back to when Luger, Diesel, even to an extent Michaels didn't get over. Having him for a rival did untold wonders for STone Cold.

Yes sir I always say Bret doesn’t get the credit for the matches he wrestled in his 96 title run and for his role in helping make Austin a star, he was the perfect opponent for Austin. That feud launched SCSA and he never looked back

@@genocidereaper1 That is absolutely not true- Bret had an excellent deal- so good that McMahon claimed he "couldn't afford it" mere months later. He was making far more than Michaels (and deservedly so), which is one of the reasons Michaels was acting like such a diva.

Steve Austin vs Bret Hart at WrestleMania 13 is the single greatest wrestling match in the WWE and among the top 3 of all time, anywhere in the world, any period.

@J Crash first of all I said the best in WWE . And among top 3 of all time, TOP 3!!. I've watched all three match trilogy of Flair and steamboat and including a 4th match Washington DC show that isn't counted in the trilogy. I bet you haven't seen that. There is a reason I said top 3 and not particularly said the best or third or second, Bret vs Austin in my opinion is among the top 3 because it was on a bigger stage. There could be Flair vs funk, Rock n roll express vs arn and ole, Roddy Piper vs Greg valentine. These are some of the matches that could fit in that top 3.

I guess it was a blessing in disguise with Shawn pulling out of Wrestlemania. It's hard to imagine any other match taking place of Austin vs Hart.

True but I would have loved to have seen a proper long battle between Michaels and Hart at 13 also. Maybe they could have had Michaels do an earlier match defending the title, if he hadn't lost his smile, then taken on Hart for the title.
The Hitman vs Stone Cold feud had a very raw, real feeling to it, the matches were brutal wrestling matches without going full ECW
I disagree with Jim's statement about Owen and Bulldog being the last big names to hold the tag titles. I dare say the tag division got a boost in the late 90s/early 2000s with the New Age Outlaws, Hardys, Edge &Christian, Rock and Sock Connection, Dudleys, and the APA. Sure, none of those teams hold a candle to the teams of the 80s and 90s but they were good for the era and got the crowd excited.
Edge and Christian, Hardyz and Dudleys, are in the same level as Hart Foundation, Bulldogs and Demolition to me.
They weren’t “top guys.” He made a point to say Owen and Bulldog were the last top guys to have the tag titles. The Hardy’s, Edge and Christian became top guys way down the road after they broke up .
Michael Zalewski Rock and Foley were tag champs after they won the WWE Title so he’s wrong
Kane and Undertaker also held the tag titles at one point. Also I believe that Triple H and Austin held the tag titles after Austin turned heel.
John C nowhere near close. Edge and Christian were just boring neither team is as goood as the rockers. Steiners, hart Foundation, doom, bulldogs, Harlem heat those tag teams were so good

I was normally of the mind that bret screwed bret in the whole screwjob fiasco. However thinking back and realizing bret put michaels over in the iron man match, then michaels vacating the belt instead of putting bret over is a coward move. Cant really blame bret for not wanting to drop the belt to michaels again.
Not to mention after all that happened Bret going up to Shawn prior to survivor series and still telling him he had no issues putting him over on that match and Shawn just replying he wasn't going to do the same for Bret. I'd also be like "well f**k you"

Agreed masterful storytelling throughout the entire and the only time a double switch worked that didn’t feel forced the greatest example of the wwf used to be make the heel face turns seem natural not you’re gonna cheer this guy that was hated and boo the guy that was loved because we forced you to. This is the greatest double turn in wwf ever the build up the storyline and the the storytelling in the match it’s what wwe needs to bring back
Bret Hart said he booked the finish to this match. One of the greatest turns in wrestling. Turning Austin face was no easy feat but it worked.

Even though Bret was a heel in 97, the interesting part is that heels usually lie and are cowards. It’s their role but with Bret he told the truth the whole US vs Canada storyline. Everything he said about Shawn was true.
Gotta disagree with Corny on one point here. The tag belts did become jobber dominated after Owen and Davey but in 2000 rejuvenated with Edge/Christian, the Hardys and the Dudleys. Then by the mid 2000s they were job belts again and never recovered.
2000-2004 were good years for tag titles divison.

Austin and Undertaker too if I recall. the original brand extension for whatever silly reason nerfed all the top tag teams in hopes of making singles out of them. of all I think Edge had the most success. those WM TLC matches were psychotic. WM17 was the strongest of all the shows.
Bret Hart is the greatest of all time. He was on another level.
This is my favorite mania match of all time, in my opinion it's also one of the most important matches because of what happened at end of March and what it led to. Bret with his great heel run and Austin obviously becoming the number 1 guy in the business. 1997 is my favorite year with WCW doing great, WWF starting the Attitude Era and ECW was really good also. Great time.
Their match at mania 13 may be the single best wrestling match in history. It had storyline, psychology, technical wrestling, brutality and it was paced excellently with an awesome finish that put both wrestlers over. Truly a classic

The best time to be a wrestling fan in my opinion. I remember being in front of the TV watching the last ten minute of murder she wrote just so I could wait for Raw and Nitro to come on. I used to flip back and forth all night long

I couldn't complain with either one.
Never forget watching Austin and how nervous he was making his entrance. He was trying to stay in character but you could see him briefly express nervousness during that entrance. This was the bigger singles match of his career at MSG. The pressure was on to deliver and he did.

As far as pallette cleansers go... Doesn't really get much better.
Even with all the political shit and chaos going on backstage, this is still one of the greatest feuds in WWE history and the best feud of 97 tied with nWo vs Sting.
I thought Brett vs Mr. Perfect from that Summer Slam was gonna be hard to beat from the “Wrestling” standpoint. But, I was happily wrong.

Growing up during this everyone I knew preferred Bret Hart over Shawn. Sweet Chin Music was the only thing that got over with kids around me but we all knew once u were in the sharpshooter it was game over.

My favourite match...I'm a bit biased because Bret is my favourite grappler, but it's an astonishing piece of work from EVERYBODY involved, including Shamrock and the commentating team. As weird as it sounds, it'll always sadden me that Bret didn't get to return the favour to Austin at Mania 14.

No brets list of who he refused to drop it to was one guy. He said the only time he has ever refused to put someone over in his entire career was shawn.
It amazes me that these guys got along great backstage, because I was completely convinced they hated each other in real life. It was so convincing.
The Raw after Wrestlemania 13 was the best ever. Stone Cold came out a baby face for the first time, dropped the best unrehearsed promo in the history of WWF and crippled Hart in a street fight, to when he attacks Hart in his ambulance.
The Attitude Era was born, and every a Monday night was the GREATEST night of the week until 2001.
Michaels doing what he did was great.If he hadn't we might not have gotten Hart vs Austin at Wrestlemania XIII.

I have recently re-watched 96/97 WWE and man, Bret was just as great as I remember him as a kid. In fact, he is probably greater than I remember. Michaels could work good matches with most guys, especially if they were athletic, Bret worked good or great matches with EVERYONE. Austin wasn't all that polished, at any point in his career but his matches became more watchable as brawler, yet in 96 he was still a "wrestler" but didn't really have top level elite matches and along comes Hart and makes him a look a BILLION bucks! By the time Mania 13 came along, Austin was raised by Hart and Vince, allowing him to breathe as an almost main eventer.
Anyway, little side note, if you listen to the commentary on that great SS 96 match, they mention at the beginning that it will be a submission match. It gets mentioned multiple times but it seems Hart/Austin never knew and they work a normal match lol What was that all about?

I was sitting in section 333 (nose bleeds lol) at the garden watching Bret Vs Austin at Survivor Series.
What was it like watching the action from up there?
It was great! I left with no voice. Got to sit closer at a few house shows and he gave his glasses away to a kid that was like 5 seats away from me. Great childhood memories overall. The good old days lol.
The match is great and one of the most important moments in wrestling history, but I would love to have seen the proper Bret vs. Shawn rematch with the ankle lock finish where Bret snaps his foot and makes him tap out. It's unlike anything that's ever happened in wrestling, especially at that time, and could have been just as historic and shocking as the double turn.

Austin / Bret & Hogan / Savage were the 2 greatest wrestling feuds of all time in my opinion. 2 compelling storylines that weren't done and over in a month. It's no surprise that both our remembered nearly 25 and 32 years later!
I was at raw in Nashville after the final four match. Austin clobbered Bret with a chair and Sid got the strap. After raw they filmed several interviews with Sid, Bret, Austin, and Taker setting up the new wrestle mania line up. I remember it well. Awesome time to be a fan. And Raw was awesome live back then.
Watched the WWF when I was in HS and younger. Haven’t watched it since maybe 2001.
That said, I could listen to Jim tell stories all day.

My all-time favorite feud. Intense, long and extremely disputed. Great matches and storyline. Bret was the GOAT running things here and Austin nailed it and made good use of this opportunity to stardom. The Stone Cold persona in this era was even better than later champion popular times. Much more than a violent heel, he was a fierceless one army man running wild into the federation and taking no prisioners, ruhless and extremely agresive pissed off ultimate badass. Specially I should remark Austin shines in the numerous promos during this time, that stuff is pure GOLD. This feud make history and changed the business later on, building the charismatic character of the all-time greatest wrestling star who lead the way into a new era and the supremacy of the WWE.
Bret Hart....the excellence of execution wasn't just about his ring execution he's always executed his story lines top notch. Never needed to constantly create new moves because his ring work was so crisp and he fought a variety of opponents, so what made him great was being able to make anyone look good and he was a counter wrestler which kept everything fresh. Today people give a lot of praise to Sasha Banks she has that same ring ability as a counter wrestler With with mostly the same move set for years and can put on a great match with anyone.
I'm a bit biased seeing as Bret Hart is my all-time favorite wrestler, but I'm fired the fuck up for this 1! BTW, not only is this 1 of my favorite matches of all time, but the match between these 2 at S. Series '96 is incredible as well.

Bruno pleaded for a year to lose the title. The schedule was killing him.
Was this during his first title reign or the 2nd one? I know he only got 2 Sundays a month off during the first one and his schedule was reduced a lot for the 2nd one but he was only supposed to be champion for 1 year rather than 3.5.

Greatest match in wwfs entire history, only rivaled by other Bret matches. He took his stuff seriously and made sure it made sense.
His matches were untouchable. Always ground breaking and everyone then copied him.

What an amazing buildup to an epic double turn. Nothing of this nuance could ever happen in modern wrestling, I’m quite sure the business is beyond repair. But I will always love this era in the WWF.
The benefit was that Undertaker got a run as WWF Champion as a babyface. Who knows when Taker would've had another shot.

Underrated match, Austin vs Bret at Survivor Series 96

What a great analysis of the Attitude Era.
That match is great. There character's are so different that it works. Plus it's a damn good match. Austin was swearing and drinking beers and Bret was shaking fans hands and giving little kids his sunglasses. Brilliant clash of styles.
And with a 99.99 percent probability, Stone Cold, you ARE the father!
BRET did more for wwf ipo in one match & turned AUSTIN into a STAR in one nite in the

Attitude Era low cards was freaking amazing. Especially in 99 - 2001, the entire roster from top to BOTTOM would get huge pops and reactions.

Well about Sid not drawing money, I mean if the show doesn't do well with Sid, Taker, Bret and Austin and so forth, I don't know what would have drawn more at this point in time. This was on paper a great attractive card. Sid vs Taker would be Andre vs Studd as main event in the 80s. May not be Hogan, but it's still solid.

Bret Hart and Steve Austin match was one of the greatest in Wrestlemania history in my opinion
I honestly can't think of a better Wrestlemania match than this one as the years go by.
Actually the tag titles were held by Rock & Mankind, Undertaker & Big Show, X-Pac & Kane in 1999. So top guys did still hold the tag titles
In 98 Kane & Mankind and Taker & Austin. xpac wasn't a top guy though.

I think some general background info Brian and Jim forgot to mention was that for months, Austin was HARASSING Bret at every turn. Before Bret returned in '96, Austin was already cutting promo's on Bret to set up a match at that years Survivor Series. Then after Bret beat Austin, Bret lost a title match against Sid due to Michaels interference at December's IYH ppv. Austin used that loss to begin the, "Bret is a crybaby!" angle, and then proceeded to cheat and win the Royal Rumble in January '97 after Bret had already eliminated him (the refs were distracted, and Austin snuck back in to win it). Then the whole, "Michaels loses his smile" nonsense happens, and Bret regains the title February's IYH ppv in a 4-way against Undertaker, Austin, and Vader. Austin was the first to be eliminated, but returned to mess with Bret when The Undertaker was the only other participant left. Bret still won the match, but it was clear Austin wasn't going away any time soon. And then the very next night, when Bret had to defend his newly won title against Sid, Austin kept attacking Bret every time Bret tried to head towards the ring to have his match against Sid, and did it multiple times throughout the entire Raw show. And when FINALLY Bret and Sid were having their match at the end of the show, Austin interfered and cost Bret the title with a chair shot and Sid won the title. Bret then complained on the next Raw, and was granted one last chance to head to Wrestlemania as champ by getting a steel cage match against Sid at the last Raw before WM13. In it, The Undertaker interfered because he wanted to protect his own title match against Sid at WM while Austin interfered to try and make his match against Bret for the world title. The Undertaker eventually cost Bret the match by slamming the cage door in his face just as Bret was about to crawl out, and at the end Austin did a quick promo calling Bret a crybaby and blaming him for not winning the title (even though Austin cost Bret the title in the first place in the previous month).
So, there was this huge feud of anger and resentment built up for Bret and Austin for this WM13 match. It's what allowed Bret to be so vicious, while Austin got to be pushed up higher in the card. And man, these few months of WWF story line have never been topped, let alone matched, ever since the end of '96/beginning of '97 when Bret and Austin were firing on all cylinders
Even when he took the beating from Austin in the ambulance which was hilarious, he took it in a way that wasn’t cowardice

I disagree with Sid not drawing money. Guy was pretty over even when he wasn't positioned too. He just had a generic moveset and wrestled at a slow prodding pace that didn't work well with other big men but was perfect against smaller guys like Shawn and Bret.
Whether he drew or not Sid got some huge pops in 96 97. Also, man did he look sweet as hell with the winged eagle belt.

Sid looked the way you’d expect a heavyweight world champ to look plus his intensity had its place. In ring work.....eh. But he’s a guy that can go on a tear for a while then needs to go away then come back I’d think

KOTR '96, especially the speech afterwards, was the catalyst Austin needed. Maybe he'd have eventually worked his way to the main events, but in June '96, nobody had Stone Cold down as the next big thing.
I was a huge Stone Cold fan but I was honestly looking forward to a rematch against hbk. None the less this match was such a great match.
Brett vs Austin was my fav type of match to see. They had the perfect mix of wrestling and brawling.
Austin and Pillman as a tag team in Wcw was excellent. But Wcw dropped the ball and broke them up.

this match and the later "screwjob" were the keys to WWF winning the war. it's kind of hilarious that it took the trifecta of Shawn Michaels bullshit, Bret Hart, and Steve Austin to make it all happen.
I've always wondered how Austin WrestleMania opponent was if Bret and Shawn rematch still happened. Probably against Undertaker.

The Attitude Era was great because it was the last of the territory guys which is something today’s wrestling is severely lacking they don’t know how to get over are work a crowd tell a story. And now they fail on the biggest stage without getting the chance to hone their skills in front of a smaller audience in different Towns. And the ones that do know how to work or get over aren’t allowed enough freedom they are fed shit constantly.
It's such an artform to tell the story the right way in wrestling. People point to Austin's post- King of the Ring promo as if it was THE turning point and "launch" of the attitude era as if everything just instantly turned on a dime. No, that was a seed that was planted. The fan embrace of Austin despite him being a heel was a gradual process, and the storytelling of this match played perfectly into that.
Fatal Four-Way PPV was awesome. Loved it! That RAW after was crazy and I always thought pretty good booking. My friends and I really thought Brett lost it when the we’re taking down the cage.
That’s what got me back into wrestling.
