    Because Snowman pawned the belt, they used Lawler's old AWA belt to be the Unified title. Amazing how that old AWA belt lasted until 1997, years after the AWA folded.

    Sounds like Watts was doing the same thing McMahon has always done. Casting wrestlers for a gimmick, instead of coming up with a gimmick to match the wrestler.

    • @GodlessScummer
      @GodlessScummer 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      CJ J I think you're TL Hopper reference isn't really getting the point. A better reference would be how Vince used Warrior and later Lex Luger to try and fill Hogan's role with not as much success. That's what Watts was trying to recapture as JYD had been that big of a star for him. I think all promoters have fallen into the trap of trying to put a carbon copy of the last big star in to fill the role. It's not really about gimmicks as such but promoters will try and keep a winning formula with the kind of talent that appeals to certain markets. However in both examples given trying to replace JYD with another African American star or Hogan with another muscle man the problem is that it's unlikely you'll catch lightning in a bottle twice. Vince got close with Warrior but Warrior was more popular when he was chasing the top spot but didn't draw once on top.

    • @GodlessScummer
      @GodlessScummer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not going to deny that Watts had (and maybe still has) some pretty unpleasant views and he's certainly said some awful things in the past. But at the same time he also knew that that African Americans were a huge part of his market. JYD actually got over with white fans as well. In terms of promoting wrestlers to appeal to ethnicities Watts certainly wasn't alone. Vince McMahon Sr did this with promoting Bruno Sammartino and Pedro Morales to appeal to Italian and Puerto Rican fans and even Vince Jr has done this. When he realised that Hispanics were a huge demographic he started pushing Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio (Not that they didn't deserve their pushes). The strange thing about Watts is that he also had Ernie Ladd as a booker for large parts of his time as a promoter. I'm not excusing the stuff Watts has said in the past but I think he wasn't so prejudiced that he would let it get in the way of business.

    • @GodlessScummer
      @GodlessScummer 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      . I'm sure his reasons for pushing black wrestlers weren't exactly altruistic. He said it himself that he saw green before he saw black or white. There probably some old school promoters that were reluctant to push black wrestlers for reasons that weren't business minded. In a lot of the old territories you would find that they would only have one or two black wrestlers on the roster at any one time. It was if they had to have a token black wrestler just to appeal to that audience.

    Why didn't Bill Watts replace the JYD with established "Baby-Face" Black/ African American at that time (not under contract w/ the WWWF/WWF) with either Thunderbolt Patterson, Big Red (distant relative of mine), Koko B. Ware or Brickhouse Brown? I don't think Koko was the WWF during that time.
