Giant Sea Snail Hunting Crown-of-thorns Starfish

- The Giant Triton is one of the ocean’s largest sea snails. Tritons can measure nearly half a meter from tip to tail. This giant gastropod feeds upon sea cucumbers and sea stars. The crown of thorns starfish seems to be one of its favorite foods. When hunting, the triton uses scent trails to track its prey. But it’s not the only one with an acute sense of smell. The starfish senses the approaching threat and attempts to flee. The triton gives chase. With nowhere to hide, the starfish relies on its venomous spines as a last line of defense. Giant tritons have developed a tolerance to the starfish’s toxins. And their saliva contains a paralyzing agent, which brings the pursuit to an abrupt halt. Its hard-fought meal is now ready for consumption.

Props to the cameraman for keeping up with the chase, I know it can be hard with wild animals
Ironically, if there's was a decent current, staying still is SUPER difficult lol.
I saw my first octopus, and it was curious! Staying in place, against the current, was like running a marathon :p
Seriously though, must have had massive oxygen tanks.
We have a funny guy here everyone!
I can’t imagine how long that chase took in real time.
Lol good point
Camera man: Just be faster im running out of oxygen
Oh my lord why we are doing this
I don't understand it. Why not FIGHT. Why just sit there and take it??? FIGHT BACK.
@@costco_pizza didn’t you watch the video?
That chase was more exciting than a Fast and Furious chase sequence.
to be fair, if at the end of a Fast n Furious chase sequence, the winner ate the loser, then it would be more exciting.
@@stevenwilson5556 lol
But not as exciting as FAMILY…….
Only way that Snail caught up with Starfish was with power of Family. :3
😅
They are all laughing at first - until the pursuit goes into the third day.
Sort of like test cricket
@@peterclancy3653 Yep, my parents, over 80, find that very exciting, watching players stroll over the fields, hitting the ball every now and then, even putting the odd one.
...and the coffee ran out.
No matter how slow you think you are, there’s always something that’s slower than you. 😄
help a snail is chasing me !
If it was put out that Crown of Thorns seastars were an "ancient medicine" for various things, they'd be hunted down and be in markets.
Lol
That sounds like a good idea. Put lionfish and snakeheads on that list while we're at it.
@@NightcoreNewbie Snakeheads are already considered a delicacy. Not only has it not helped to get rid of them, it's the main reason people brought them here in the first place.
Slight problem with that logic is that it could end up working a little too well and cause the crown of thorns sea star to be put on the endangered species list or at least the threatened species list
@@alexconn7473 considering how effective a few individuals would be in breeding programs I don’t see the issue
Who else got happy when they introduced the snail? like the hero just arrived, lol
The snail is adorable as well.
Meanwhile, in the ally of Bikini Bottom, Gary lost his mind & is fast approaching after Patrick for a meal. 🐌🌸
Read the "Bikini Bottom Horror". It's about Patrick killing everyone.
Bruh but to even come to the realization that our lil Gary out here capable of chomping ole patRick star mane, that’s messed up
Only when patrick is a spiky psychopath.
The faak 🤣🤣🤣
Nom nom nom
We should have some celebrity state the crown of thorns is a fashionable delicacy. They'll be gone in no time
Wow, so religious: Jesus' crown of thorns on him by his torturers...
😂
The starfish PR agency beat you to it, they've sold in the triton shell as a must have item and their numbers are dwindling.
Just make sure that the Chinese buy into it. They'll happily hunt them to extinction.
@Cerbone 🤣
As a tortoise I can confirms that this is the fastest chase sequence I have ever witnessed
As a Sloth I can concur.
As a rock it all went so fast I didn't see a thing.
it's definitely faster than my internet
@@insectslayer1374 I don't understand it. Why doesn't the starfish not FIGHT? Why just sit there and take it??? Scratch, punch, claw, yell, do ANYTHING. FIGHT BACK.
@@costco_pizza oh? You ask? I believe it was born in a place where food isn't lacking and easy to acquire with genes that gave it an advantage over its kin and against its potential adversaries- that armor. It must've thought it was special and invincible as it pranced about and did as it pleased with the environment but that snail must've whispered something to it in that last moment that ultimately shattered the starfish's delusion along with its remaining resolve to escape its gruesome inevitable fate.
*TLDR:*
The starfish was too frkin slow and the unfortunate prey can no longer escape because _killer Triton has already touched that starfish_ with its paralyzing saliva
Giant Triton snails must be protected , they're the heroes of the reef, and the COTS's worst nightmare
That was one intense slow pursuit. It nearly gave me a heart attack from watching the crazy slow chase.
Sucks when you can’t outrun a snail.

Starfish
CoT are all over SE Asia and I've seen beautiful reefs decimated by them. Here in Kota Kinabalu one of the local dive schools regularly clears the reef of them but it's a thankless and difficult task. If you stab them, they release their eggs, so they have to be carefully scooped up. Each day they're removing 50 at a time but they keep coming back. They're evil.
No predatory snails there?
fucking pests
add the snail 😁
People found that crown of thorns starfish are allergic to cow biol so now we have HK robots that hunt starfish and spray them.
Import Trident snail’s immediately! They’re the only true natural defense against those spawns of Cthulhu!
“do you know what it means when something chases you very slowly? … it means there’s a reason that they don’t have to run” - twelfth doctor

They just need the worlds wildest police chases theme music in the background.

most exciting predator chase scene in history.
The slow suspense is intense!
It's more like a chase sin to me.
I just watch a cheetah chases and catch a gazelle in 5 second
Now watching a snail chasing a star fish it seem like a million years
😀😀
some ppl see their life flash before their eyes in near death situations, these starfish see the entire history of the universe before dying.
Always entertaining to see what passes for "flee" on the ocean floor.
It's like two geriatrics racing for the buffet.
"This brings the pursuit to an abrupt halt" LOL
It’s like watching two really old people making a dash for the arthritis medicine...
That's got to be the most unlikely looking predator. At first glance it appears to be no match for the crown of thorns.
you'd be surprised sea snails pack a punch, especially the cone ones
I’d say starfish too are unlikely looking predators.
Sea snails, especially cone ones can be pretty viscous. There's quite a few that hold harpoon like poison barbs they use to hunt (as well as hurt anyone who bothers them).
So you’re telling me these guys are the reason that coral is dying well plus humans too
There are too many starfish because of humans too so 100% on humans, preserve energy.
That's exactly what I was thinking
I mostly blame humans, the crown of thorns are just doing what any other creature would do when there hungry
@@SonKunSama yeah, a lot of the pollutants we pump into the ocean kill many other animals, but provide basically a perfect chemistry for the star's breeding grounds
@@SonKunSama lol no.
Man, I thought the O.J. chase was slow!
Also like that the sea snail has little sea snails hanging on it.
It's like watching two traction cities chasing down the other from Mortal Engines.

Looks like Gary isn't happy about Patrick winning the Great Snail Race with Rocky and is taking revenge.
Gary ate Patrick. Patrick ate spongebob. Spongebob ate plankton
Putting an slow motion on that pursuit. Made this 5 minute video 3 years to watch.😂
