Something so satisfying about seeing that shiny cable wrapping perfectly around the spool…Thanks for sharing your adventure with Shorty, easy to say now but it is a blessing only the S10 was hurt. It didn’t destroy your tractor, trailers, or worse a little human (or any humans!) Just found your channel so I’m getting slowly up to speed on the C50. God bless
From what I’ve heard from tow companies over the years is that the Holmes wrecker set ups were the best. Super strong. They set up dual 12k or 15k winches on One ton square bodies in the 70s and 80s. What they pulled with those trucks was unbelievable. Now it’s 15k gvw trucks and up doing that work
When I was a rookie back in 74-75 towing, used to snatch block left cable back to right by side boom head, got short hood spring hook one end to be cold shut ,other to right side cable. Hook sling makes it manuverble and keeps from unhooking jhook chain on tight turns when using two cables to sling. Aslo makes right side easily available for winch out along highway. As you may know never use d-rings at ear of bed, the slightest bit of tension on cable makes lever linkage bind under bed , making it sometimes impossible to pull out to neutral, then your runnen for the clutch peddle. If iv got d-rings I'll fire'm out to ya. Just be as important if not more, hydraulic fluid and filter, mentioned things for benafit of new or young ones starting. Always liked the H475T myself, they weren't popular cause guys had a worse backing up when windows full. On a two ton and increased hight of pedastol really gave them some reach. If you ad another tool box 24" making the be ca 108' really made them rather strong lite medium duty units. Nice rig. All the best to ya.
Shorty's looking good,if there's any junkyards around you,you could probably find a couple of D rings if the junkyard has any old tow trucks in the yard & if the do then that would be great
Need to keep oil on those cables, keeps them flexible and gives you twice the life. It also helps them move over the rollers and through snatch blocks. When installing new cables or cleaning up bird nest just put a large wheel/tire on end of cable. That way you dont have to worry about damaging other vehicles (tractors).
Those winvh lines belong on that sling too and hold the sling to truck too..but u should have d rings on there too, there's a wrecker store in new york where u can get all the parts u need too.
That ones a lot more truck than the baby wreckers. Those Ramseys have the same internals and the hydraulic, PTO and electric only differ by the drive parts so I snag all the cheap used ones I can get. Nobody hurts the electric versions, they just fry the motor. It's worth draining and replacing the gear lube to make sure there's no moisture. Zip's has Holmes parts and all the Ramsey stuff is available but expensive enough I collect used winches instead.
Very cool project and a very clean H475 Holmes bed! Zips/Aw Direct has the delta rings and the mounting pins that you are looking for on the tailboard of the bed. Also, with the Ramsey level winders, the way you wound the cables is not correct. The cable is actually supposed to pass through the upper and lower bars, not go underneath the bottom bar. I have the level winders on my Ramsey winches on my 2001 IH 4700 with a Century 612 bed and they are the best tensioner/guides imo. Also, where did you buy your winch cables? They don’t look like they have a working load limit tag
The winches could have held twice the cable you put on there, I like having a lot of cable so I don’t have to get to close to the stuck vehicle to get them out, nothing worse than getting stuck yourself.
Remember the more cable on drum the weaker the winch becomes, a lot of cable is no real benefit for be small 11 inch hydraulic drum's. Bet you used 500, 600, 750's where you can load'm up, your statement indicates you to be a good recovery guy. Nobody wants to deal with lots of cable due to maintenance, and a lotta guys are bit lazy. All the best to ya.
@@mchebornek we cured the weak es by using snatch blocks and double or triple our power for a short pull. The Braden winches could take the abuse of a large truck stuck in soft sand or mud even if the tool bins were what kept it from sinking deeper. Remember a few recoveries where we had to send one truck in to start the pull using another on firm soil as an anchor to pull the first truck out when the recovery made it to the first truck…then pull it out and use its winch to assist the anchor truck in getting the recovery out
the winch that had excess oil in it.. check the end seal on the hyd. drive motor.. they tend to leak and that oil ends up in the winch.. seals are cheap and easy to change.. common issue..
i'd hate to be around one of those cables if they snapped, i worry about with my grandpa's gmc holmes 600. i think the ones on it is the original ones.
I would see if the company who made the body had them so they are properly rated for the abuse they will be put through don’t forget your safety is on the line I would not take a chance on something just for the cheap it would wind up biting you in the ass cool truck hopefully you will get many years of use from it!!!!!
make shure the rear studs are torked tight if not the inside wheel can work back and forth and cut the studs off with no waring and every thing look good these trucks over built and very tuff might have a posi rear every one of mine did hope its a 5sp ran several for years and years and went for several white knuckle rides when i lost the dulles the 10 bolt curse swiched to dayton hubs and wheels
Dude that truck is awesome 👌 I work as a tow operator and I mostly drive deck trucks so far. Could I get your mailing address, I'll see about scoring you a few things for your truck 👍
"It's better then throwing it away and getting a new one." Uh...no. No, it's not. In an industrial application such as this, you either have good equipment or you start losing body parts. Do yourself a favor. Buy a new spring, dude.
You or your friends might be interested in a 1984 GMC 3500 turbo 454, square body, which the owner is interested in selling, as seen at a yard sale. If interested, reply with your email and I will provide his phone number.

I grew up on a holmes 480. Best truck ever. It will still out pull all these new trucks.
The old wrecker is coming along nicely, nothing like fresh winch cables, just keep em coated in chain lube or they'll rust up, keep up the good work.

Just found your channel. Very cool, very interesting. Love the content!😎👍
Great project. Good luck with it. Look forward to seeing more videos.
Yeah it would be nice to see you doing work with shorty the wrecker I love watching video's of tow wreckers at work doing there daily duty
You can make those rubber rollers for your cable levelers out of tire sidewalls and a couple hole saws.
Every old Holmes has those little rings and I have bent everyone of my Father's back in the day...you are not the first and you won't be the last.

What a absolute beast of a wrecker
nice little truck had one was a utillity box on it sold it 20 years ago just found it again will buy it back if good price

Cool truck you don't see em like that anymore

Very cool looking rig 👍✌️🤟 keep up the great videos later Friend 👍✌️

Cool old wrecker
You could probably contact JC Smith for parts he either has them or knows where you could get them
Looking sweet bro.
If you buy D rings, go to an army surplus store. They have the big ones for like $12. I bought mine and pull ropes there for cheap
Sweet little wrecker!!!

You can make your D-Rings out of 1/2” plate and solid round bar very easy
I think i would love to own that bad boy!!!
Hope you drenched those wires so they keep looking fresh year round😎
Nice work!
You never put the cables through the slider holes rite before the pulleys!!!
Another good video 👏👏👍👍😁😁😄😄😃😃😀😀
Very cool. Seems like you aren't fixing a truck as much as you are building up a great tool
I enjoyed it!!!

Any plans to put a winch on the front bumper like the 6.2
Can you upgrade the emergency lights on it an out a spot light on it for night work, maybe LED light
led light bar would be sweet too

I'll check it again and see if it over flows out of one side. Thanks for the tip
@@NOT_FOR_HIRE I worked for a large towing company for years.. we were also a Holmes Repair shop.. Been there done that.. FYI nice Rig ya got there..
Hey Shorty 😁
Cool beans....
i'd hate to be around one of those cables if they snapped, i worry about with my grandpa's gmc holmes 600. i think the ones on it is the original ones.
Whenever in a hard pull always lay a piece of carpet or large floormat half way along the cable. When/ if it breaks the cable will fall to the ground.

you wanna talk to jamie davis in hope bc about holmes wreckers
Owsom.
Use rubber horse mats for the rubber thing
or are they the same?

Hey man
Hey!
@@NOT_FOR_HIRE im just enjoying some nice Gm square body content
Put a spotlight.
Needs the wheel lift off the other wrecker
Your right it does
@@NOT_FOR_HIRE I wouldn't try putting a wheel lift on that truck it's too short and doesn't have enough length to counter balance
D ring shackle or ring
I think they are called d ring or a shackle
ok
Led lights
you can make another rubber bar with conveyor belt, but it would be hard to cut
