Why so few views ? Brilliant song. Way better than 99% of the crap in the charts today. They'll be playing this on TH-cam in the next hundred years and beyond.Mark my words : ) May 1st 2023.
My dad introduced me to Status quo on cassette tape when I was 12 and this was the first song. My Dad is 69 now and I am 42 and it sounds as great as ever! Way better than the modern crap we have to endure these days
The 'island' in the title is Jersey. Rick co-wrote the song with Bob Young about his experiences after spending 6 months holed up in a hotel there during a 'tax exile' year. With nothing to do and nothing "available" on the island to give them a "lift", Rick was bored out of his skull, spending his time getting into scrapes and crashing cars. The Cruxie referred to in the song is band manager Alan Crux who would fly over and visit them occasionally. Curiously his name was replaced in a later recording by "Someone." The reference to Rick getting high when his friend comes needs no explaining here.
Alan Crux was part of the one of the guys who ripped them off while they were off their bonces. apparently or should that say allegedly! Colin Johnson was another who never gets mentioned..I wonder why?
Takes me straight back to being 16 and buying the album & 45 years later still got the vinyl! Always loved this song but it never got a lot of airplay in Australia, but AM radio and Countdown was about it then....... Alan's bass line is killer too
A little known fact about Rick was that he was also an eminent marine biologist. He spent a year on the remote isle of South Georgia island to complete his PhD.
I was brought up on Quo, my Dad had all of their songs on vinyl, huge Rossi fan. I always preferred Rick, better voice in my opinion :) add: i must have been 18 before i ever learned about pictures of matchstick men........best song ever :D
Oh boy i do miss this band.....

One of my favorite Quo songs. I remember it used to be played on the radio in Australia in the early 80's.
Brilliant, some random thought brought me here. Always loved this song, one of their best!
Excellent song. Thanks for putting this clip up. Good times
Still my favourite Quo number. They played a lot of covers, but could also pen a hit when they wanted to.
One of my favourite 80s songs...Artfully done.

One of their beautiful unknown ballads
So cool that you have the video with the penguins in! I remember this, and of course, absolute classic. God bless the Quo Army - in hoc signo vinces!

A little known fact about Rick was that he was also an eminent marine biologist. He spent a year on the remote isle of South Georgia island to complete his PhD.
