    Great video, here is a tip that will make it even better. Before you try to take the bolts out if the tensioner, Take the belt off. That will make turning the bolts much easer.

    stick an alan key in the tensioner to lock the wheel cocked back. there should be a little hole on the cast to do this. makes putting the larger belt on a breeze.

    Without having the right belt tensioner tool, I did pretty much the same install process as the first belt. I installed a new tensioner and that thing was a PIA to use just a regular 17 mm wrench to install the belt.

      @@YOUCANIC Putting the rear belt on was a trick in of itself. I know most auto parts stores have the installation tool available, just doesn't make sense that the engineers didn't devise a way to loosen the pump for easier installation of the rear belt. As for the front belt, again, the proper long arm tensioner wrench would be greatly helpful for leverage because that new hydraulic tensioner takes some leverage to allow you to loop the new belt.

    I budget 2x the book time on jobs like this. So if this is a 2 hr job, I expect to finish it in about 4 hrs. It's either $500 or about 4 hrs of my time. What about a new tensioner while you were in there? Then, after this belt swap, I need to service the f/r diffs. I learned a lot from my mk4 GTI, but the Germans do things differently.

    Per my frustrating experience, the Gates water pump "Stretchfit" belt (K030309SF) supplied by Rockauto, carried by Advance and O'Reillys (same number) does not fit, or, if you can get it on, it will ruin the pump bushing/bearing due to excessive strain. All videos show the belt being readily slipped over the pulley projection and then worked onto the pulley grooves. I was unable to get the Gates belt over the pulley projection as it is about 1/2" shorter than the OEM belt. I bought a belt from Mazda (

      Thanks for the heads-up on the Gates WP stretch belt ($10). I had already ordered the Gates belt from RockAuto, along with the Gates Serp Belt & Tensioner, and will be performing the installation this weekend. I went to the local Mazda dealer today and they had the $39 OEM Stretch Belt in-stock. $29 for another 1/2" of rubber... will compare the two before install, regardless.

    What size socket was that for the stretch belt replacement. I did hear a 17 mm wrench to take tension off at the beginning

    I did the stretch belt late at night when it tore, but I pulled so hard the tensioner it just stayed free with no tension. I'm wondering if it's supposed to do that? I need to do the serpentine belt still. Cars been running fine still for more than 6 months.

    • @hatchetoverland
      @hatchetoverland ปีที่แล้ว

      The tensioner is hydraulic, powered by oil pressure. You forced the oil out. When you start the car, it should repressurize and go back to normal. (unless it is worn out). Since it's been running fine you are probably ok.

    • @jochenheiden
      @jochenheiden 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@hatchetoverlandNo absolutely not. The tensioner on a 2016 CX-5 is self contained and does not get pressure from the engine. DAFUQ?
