As an "eternal beginner" learning from various apps (Duolingo, Hello Chinese, Chinese Skill, Chinese Sentences), I can say that the tones cause me great anxiety. As a result, I tend to overdo them. Then when I hear native speakers, it sounds like they almost ignore the tones of all but certain words in a sentence. If a sentence has ten words, it sounds to me like only three of them are emphasized enough for me to hear the tones. Tones 1 and 4 are, to me, more recognizable. Tones 2 and 3, in regular speech, sound pretty much the same.
It's almost as if, when learning a two-syllable Mandarin word, I'm learning a little song and I have to remember the melody, and when I can't do that, I panic.
I’m learning mandarin as well and I feel you. The tones are very subtle, specially when you’re not listening to an instructional recording. Keep on listening, it takes some skills to develop that listening skill of noticing the tones. I have a friend that helps me by sending me voice messages that I can slowly digest and also write down what I’m going to record back. However, nothing beats the real in person conversations, they’re the hardest but the most productive of all. Good luck
People massively exaggerate the importance of tones. I live in China and speak Chinese daily. If you speak at a decent pace, with confidence and the correct grammar, it doesn't matter if 75% of your tones are wrong.

Not sure if this helps, but if you are speaking in sentences tones aren't super important, the context of the other words help it make sense.
If you are saying one word or short phrase then it has to be correct
@@remitto8367 Still, though, it's always important not to ignore tones entirely. Just trying to help the user who started this thread.
Anyway, I think tones tend not to be that well-pronounced _all the time_. Also, I think even natives sometimes change Tone 3 words to Tone 2. But it's also a rule that if a third tone precedes another third tone, then it becomes a second tone.

I also added 然后 as a filler word cause a lot of chinese people use it the way we say in English very repetitively "and then" all the time (which is like a bad habbig also in English but when everyone is doing it, it definately makes you sound natural lol)

(1) Yoyo + Shuoshuo is a perfect combination for many reasons (I am Yoyo student myself).
(2) Mark Zuckerberg was struggling in those speeches. When your Chinese is at that level, you need to practice at your learning place or at home. It's the most idiotic thing to try to make a public speech or panel discussion with that level of language. There is no point in doing that.
I've probably watched BBT a hundred times, and I have never understood more than a 10th of Howard's mandarin until today. Thanks for including the subtitles to that xD

谢谢! Love this! I've recently re-started my study of Mandarin, and I've been blown away by the abundance of really high-quality, engaging learning materials, even for beginners. Grace, who you mentioned, has amazingly thorough on-screen captioning for examples, even including both Pinyin and Zhuyin if I remember right. And I love Jessie's perspective and the pop-up captions for things that she or her partner says unscripted, including the Cantonese. This is the first video I've seen from you, and I immediately subbed. Your presentation style and the totally superfluous sketch comedy sold me.
I'd love to see a video about Mandarin in Hunan, about the variations relating to L's and N's and any other differences from Standard Mandarin.

Although its kinda marketing, I also feel he is sincere in his message. Having watched his vids, it leaves you with a good feeling, whether thats laughing at his pronunciation or because he has a good sentiment, its always a good fun!

For example I would really like to know more about the difference between pitch and tone, how can we manage that as foreigners... Or maybe about what a chinese person is? Are there some sentences that are unusual (just like in japanese you don't use some words to speak about yourself because it wouldn't be modest). Maybe there are something similar in chinese as you suggested?

11:11 hahahahaha this is me, trying to speak 4th tones ;-D I know that it sounds angry, but... whats the secret? In my language (German) is a forth tone an angry tone. Its difficult.
You have to understand that when a non native Chinese speaker is speaking Chinese and when a non native English speaker is speaking English, in their mind, their thoughts are usually in their native language. That is why you hear Zuckerberg saying "umm" and pausing like that in between words. His thoughts are still in English. The trick is to start thinking in Chinese and mimic native speakers. I mimic my Chinese teacher who is Chinese. My entire voice changes when I speak Mandarin and so it should!
Let's just remember that people are learning and we shouldn't laugh at them. It's not very encouraging. I used to get so angry when people would laugh at my Austrian Grandmother who couldn't speak English well.
I'm now going to ask my teacher to raise my oral exam points because midway through the hearing exam (earphones on), my sister bangged on my widow to let her in the house and I instinctively jumped and told my teacher 吓死我了！I think she also 吓死我了when I jumped and screeched that.

Hello, Well I almost signed up to buy but this Yoyo Chinese course, however, I can't because there is a really annoying animation sound of sliding characters and pictures within the videos which are unbearable, to say the least, especially if one is using headphones and have to watch hundreds of videos. Also, there is no way to skip the quiz before moving on to the next video.
When I listen to foreigners and natives I hear that the foreigners accent every first syllable it sounds so choppy.

Great video!! Got a great couple of takeaways. The changing personality, the reason why Chinese speakers that aren't fluent have that quirk ( obvious to some, but not me) and just how bad an actor J-Lo is.
