My favorite Chengyu is 滴水穿石 (dripping water penetrates stone). In other words, be persistent
Savanto Icamnao We have the same idiom in Germany really. „Steter Tropfen 💧 höhlt den Stein“ Means, continuously falling drops (of water), are carving holes into stones. 😃👍
It can also be called “水滴石穿”

Thank you for your useful information and I can relate to you. In Vietnamese, we also use a lot of 成语 in our daily life. Most of the times we use them to talk with friends and family because it can express our thoughts in a clearer way in a certain situation.

一目十行 (read fast)
一刀兩段 (one cut into two piece = break up without looking back, usually use in relationship, family)
九死一生 (luckily survive)
聽不到
三心兩意 (hesitation)
一心一意 (wholeheartly)
三言兩語 (3 dialect, 2 language, not really an ancient idiom, just a modern idiom to decribe someone who learn multiple languages)
三番五次 (應該是三番四次) (do sth negative again and again, like 三番四次 being late)
五光十色 (colourful light)
聽不到
七零八落 (incompleted, loose usually decribes a room/a place after party etc.)
十全十美 (perfect)

The fifth on is 一石二鸟 (kill to bird with one stone). Also 三言两语 is more like describing very little word (for example: 这件事不是三言两语就能说清楚的）

大手大脚 is my favorite chengyu. I'm not sure how often it is used day-to-day.

@@sanzhang5412 I'm from The Netherlands but I live in Indonesia with my wife and son and her family of Chinese descent. A lot of her relatives can speak or at least understand Mandarin. I have always been interested since in The Netherlands I used to have many Chinese friends as well. Just a couple of months ago when the lockdown began I started learning Mandarin, along with some other languages, through the app with the green owl. My son learns Mandarin once a week in school and I'm trying my best to keep up and help him where he needs.

My favourite 成语 is probably 随机应变, I like it because in my mother tounge Vietnamese we also have it (tùy cơ ứng biến) and I use it everyday

Oh yes, 沉鱼落雁，闭月羞花, these 2 idioms are about the 4 great beauties of China. 闭月 is about 貂蝉, 羞花 is about 杨贵妃, 沉鱼 is 西施 and 落雁 is about 王昭君

“说曹操，曹操到” (shuo1 cao2 cao1, cao2 cao1 dao4) is my favourite 成语. I love the way it rhymes.
Literal meaning: Speak of Cao Cao and Cao Cao will arrive.
Figurative meaning: Speak of the devil and he will appear.

Another one I love to use in talk with other wei guo ren, when they don’t behave properly 😂 (some of my German colleagues sometimes misbehave in China), so I say in Chinese to them, Rù xiāng suí sú - 入乡随俗

Great video! My favourite one is 杯弓蛇影 bēi gōng shé yǐng (literally: "cup-bow-snake-reflection" meaning "to be extremely suspicious"). There is another one I like a lot, although that one is made up of 8 caracteres: 塞翁失马焉知非福 sài wēng shī mǎ, yān zhī fēi fú (literally: "frontier-old man-lose-horse-how-know-not-blessing" meaning "a blessing in disguise"). :-)

As a huge fan of idioms, I've made a spreadsheet of nearly 1,400 Chinese idioms, but sadly I haven't used them on a daily basis to remember them. I more or less speak Vietnamese idioms.
Though Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary and Chinese share many idioms (成语汉越), I've known only 2 of your listed ones: 莫名其妙, 胡思乱想 which I've read in Chinese novels.
The most common Sino-Vietnamese idioms in my language are idioms with characters changed after borrowing Chinese (汉语借用后用字有变) such as nhập gia tùy tục - 入乡随俗 → 入家随俗 or nhất cử lưỡng tiện - 一举两得 → 一举两便

Môn đăng hộ đối
Vạn sự như ý
Thập tử nhất sinh ......
Trước khi có chữ quốc ngữ, người ta đã dùng chữ nôm và chữ Hán nên có rất nhiều thành ngữ đến từ chữ Hán......( tham khảo tự điển thành ngữ Hán Việt.)

Hushuobadao 胡说八道--> I have heard more memorable background: Its because Han Chinese call（called） others from Central Asia 'Hu', which is a synonym for "wildly", etc. So meaning if 'hu people talking about the 8 ways to heaven - > 八道 ba dao, although not even Han people know it, the talking is considered be pure nonsense...
