I feel it should be regulated to a degree that prevents box controllers being objectively better at everything. Some hard things are easier on box controllers while some easy things are harder. Smashbox sdi needs to be nerfed like BOXX for me to feel like that controller should be legal. As it stands, it's an iffy subject, but I now have to use a box controller because of hand issues, and I wouldn't be able to continue playing the game I love without them being legal. So I'm a bit biased.

In traditional fighting games, we've seen people switch controllers because of the character they play. A few Tekken players play certain characters on stick, and others on pad. Swapping controllers, and counterpick wars are a cool aspect to fighting games. Almost like sidedecking in card games. Good video, earned my subscription!

i believe this happens more often in traditional fighting games like sf or tekken, going from arcade stick to pad for specific characters. hell, I even do it myself, playing alisa on pad and fakhumram on stick

So I don't play Smash and I want one of those "boxx" controllers with less buttons. First, it has a nice width to it; many of the leverless controllers are not wide enough to comfortably sit on the lap, and the ones that are tend to have too much height. The extra space between your hands is also much better ergonomically then having to bring your hands so close in together, which is another benefit of the width of it. All of this is also better for people who are larger and/or have large hands. On top of all of it, the price is much better than a lot of other options that DON'T have these features. I mean... you could take away many of those buttons, save on the cost of making it, and keep the price the same. They are leaving money on the table if they don't offer a more "standard" layout.
you WILL be missing out on pretty important aspects of melee if any of the buttons are taken out
but i do think a simple box would be nice for general gaming
i dont think the box has gotten enough popularity to make stuff for other audiences tho
You can use the boxx or f1 with haybox code on any game you just need to code a new preset with new angles and button placement.

Nobody ever really saw classic arcade fightstick as an issue in fighting games, but fight buttons is? This is funnier than people fighting over Controller vs Keyboard in FPS, knowing aim sucks with stick, and movement sucks with keys, but movement and buttons feel great on controller, and aim feels great on mouse. Meanwhile I like to use controller in left hand and gaming mouse in right hand, to solve both problems. This box controller just sounds like they solved the problems of fightstick and controller, and people are mad about it for not sucking. Maybe it's time we move away from 20-30+ year old technology, and just make better control options that everyone agrees is the best controller type, instead of trying to make control types worse to compensate fairness
melee is an analog game. digital controllers subvert the whole game in a way playing digital fighting games with digital controllers does not.

Sounds reminiscent of the hitbox drama in Street Fighter scene. Hitbox allows you tow hold multiple buttons at the same time, but their inputs are registered. An example of how this is busted is Guile:
Traditionally, for Guile's Sonic Boom, you need to hold back for about 40 frames (idk what it is in sf6), the push forward and a punch button. The downfall of this is, if you move forward/jump forward, you've lost charge. With a hitbox, that's all remedied as you can jump forward, move around normally, without ever losing charge. Its a technical advantage over pad/stick players.
As far as counterpicks, again the SF scene had huge counterpicks in SF4. Infiltration's Hakan counterpick against Balrog was hugeth-cam.com/video/7XKYAayVY48/w-d-xo.html and then near the end of SF4, everyone had a pocket Elena because her healing ability (Ultra) and "decent" offense. I will say, after getting my phob. I love it. I have no problems with it and is still holding very strong 9 months later. Do my hands hurt? Yeah they get pretty cramped here and there but I’ve played since 2014 and have a bad joint condition I was born with. Short answer, phob is a p good answer to the box so far
phobs are $99, work perfectly, and allow you actually play the game

I did this against a top player in Smash 4, and used a 3ds to take a game off him and switched controller mid set because I felt more comfortable playing my 3ds on a certain stage, compared to a Gamecube controller. It almost worked. The 3ds just allowed for a much better movement than the Gamecube controller at the time.

Completely disagree. Notches can make for a non minor advantage for controllers, but the main reason why the boxx will never take over is due to how non intuitive it is. Not only the cost of grating one, but the skill floor required to use it even at least somewhat proficiently is very high. I play street fighter and a few months ago purchased a hitbox to switch from pad. The hitbox has far less buttons and more simplistic of a layout and even then I still find aspects of the hitbox uncomfortable even after months of usage. Controllers are much more lenient and straightforward with their design which makes them more user friendly. Their surely will be alot more boxx players down the line, but it wont change the fact that most players will stick with gamecube, similar to how most sf players have stuck with pad/joystick.

@@JeramiJoseph For counterpicking? I think so. With the only increasing new wave of melee players/top tier players, I think it's only natural that people will want to countersink more and more with certain matchups. As for the switch from boxx to controller midset? Not at all. I should've clarified, but when I was talking about how non intuitive the boxx was, I was also suggesting that I don't believe many people will invest in one at all, especially people bringing in both a controller and boxx to the same tournament. Other than that, I think there does need to be some rule placed similar to baseball where you choose one controller and stay with it before hand, and I do agree the set was sick regardless.

How does counterpicking work? Say you just lost to a fox, is the fox not allowed to swap characters at all or is counterpicking just mean only the loser can pick a new character? Because if they also counterpick a new stage and your character is not as good on that stage are you also not allowed to swap even if the loser remains their same character?
Ive never been 100% on the melee rules.
loser of the last game picks the new stage -> winner picks their character -> loser picks their character
An advantage is only "unfair" if it un-levels the playing field. Competitive Tetris insists on completely unmodified NES controllers, competitive Donkey Kong insists on unmodified 4-way joysticks, and these are because different controllers allow players to do completely DIFFERENT techniques (in Donkey Kong, an 8-way joystick allows you to steer barrels while climbing up at the same time). Other games allow other controllers as long as the techniques themselves don't change.
If getting a box controller for home use is easy, and if the TO has four box controllers so every player can use one, and the techs themselves aren't fundamentally different, I think it's fair
boxes do the same thing to melee that you say 8-way joysticks do to donkey kong. they're explicitly not fair.

box fox is so popular because the controller is both the best ergonomic solution for most people, and practically designed for fox.
anecdotally, i was floating between a lot of characters on GCC, but quit because of wrist pain. after switching to box, marth and falco (the other two characters i played) had pretty noticable limitations that, for me, made them less fun to use, so i committed to fox.

real-time games primarily test execution. these training-wheels controllers obviate the main challenge of the game for their users. you can always play a turn-based game if you want a battle of the mind

I have no problem with what Free Palestine did because there is no rule on it and wanna note that first, but going forward I think that action should be banned. I don't think you should be able to switch controller types mid set because there are pretty distinct differences in playstyle in how you play said character unless a controller breaks. I just think its a bad look to have someone potentially go from BOXX to goomwave to phob when we all know how different characters can be played on all 3 controllers but at the end of the day I'm just here to play melee and have fun and hope everyone comes to a decision that keeps the scene thriving

@@Roupization people don’t want to ban the box due to the counter of using one. The box itself has benefits over a GameCube controller making it better controller overall for competitive play. It has an edge over the gcc, whether it’s big or small, everyone should be on the same playing field

@@JeramiJoseph Well, im assuming itd be pretty simple. Smash already has rules in place for counter picking.
On game 1, you can request a blind pick. On further games, winner picks first. Its as simple as that.
So I doubt itll really be that much of a problem in terms of counter picking. And I dont see why allowing someone to switch controllers midset is an issue.
The main topic is just whether or not box controllers should be legal to begin with. But if they are legal, the counterpick situation with them isnt really that much of an issue.

putting aside the technical advantages of box controllers, i think what will give a greater rise to them over time is long-term cost and convenience. finding decent controllers sucks imo and paying out the nose for modded ones that have expiration dates without tons of maintenance also sucks. unless you're a top player getting controller priority from modders, just get a cheatbox. it's better for your hands, characters, and wallet.

leverless controllers are becoming popular in all fighting games, not just smash, its very interesting, I personally use controller for smash, keyboard for rivals of aether and brawlhalla, and I use a mixbox for tekken, guilty gear, street fighter and a few other games, a mixbox is like the box but with keybaord keys instead of a stick

I come from the mystical land of Street Fighter V where we’ve already had this debate about hit box style controllers. Here’s the conclusion a good chunk of us have reached, it doesn’t matter.
Yeah sure these controllers are more precise in some specific yet important ways but also require a lot more brain power for even relatively simple actions and just aren’t the god like auto win button that people on Twitter act like it is.
It’s simply a different type of controller and not much more than that.

I totally agree that we should have a box for smash. It allows for more people to play and get into the game. I don’t know anything about street fighter, but for melee, in the community right now. If you use a box controller you have overall advantages over controller players due to the nature of the controller etc. yeah some things are harder on box so it’s a bit subjective. But overall, the box is better than controller as of now

Using a box over a GC controller isn't much different than using GC controllers over whatever the standard console controller is. Or a Hit Box in general over a standard arcade joystick.
I think these controllers make the already nish fighting games even more nish, imagine a normie trying to get on the FGC and seing those controllers as "the standard" 💀
As long as you aren't using a turbo controller that exceeds human input then box controllers should be legal. Smashers constantly customize their controllers by sanding down buttons, removing rubber grips from the analog sticks, replacing springs along with other parts and so on.

i main gannon and roy on a ds4 i picked up on amazon for like $17 brand new, and it feels so much better than a stock gcc. i did have to overclock it, and i play slower charecters but its just more comfortable for my hands

Its simple, demands are exceeding the controller and there is nothing wrong with this because there is such a thing as bad leverless controllers. For example, in the game I play I need to perform slide FDC, which is difficult to do with arcade stick, hitbox, and flatbox. I need to use a splitbox. So yes even the controller that is supposedly the "advantaged" controller cant even meet my demands. Get over it and get good!!

I think box styled controllers are very interesting. While I think that allowing players to compete and minimize hand pain is extremely important for the scene, I don't think it's absurd to still point out that they currently are inherently unbalanced in some aspects (i.e. better than a stock gc conch or phob in some ways, worse in others). I also don't think there's enough data on them to say whether they have a drastic impact on competitive play or not (just like Goomwaves are clearly unbalanced/superior to stock gc controllers and phobs). I doubt that boxes are "broken", like truly broken broken in a way that makes them the only viable controller, but I wouldn't be surprised if the community decides on more nerfs to balance them out.
As always I have hope that there are more knowledgeable internal conversations going on between TOs and players, because the chaotic twitter "conversations" on the topic really don't seem productive
I agree. A lot of it is bickering on Twitter instead of talking about real solutions. Is the box a better controller, yes. Should it be nurfed to be more like a gcc? Probably, so everyone can be on an even level. Phobs are a great step in the right direction, but when it comes to doing macroing and other types of changes that are human impossible, that’s when it becomes a problem
Hax works super hard to make his box to be as fair as possible (his entire youtube channel has become talking about nerfing the box to be fair) but a lot of the controller cons hinge on the fact that GC controllers are essentially RNG based when it comes to being able to execute tech

@@nahometesfay1112 boxxes will make melee less accessible. at a certain adoption rate, boxxes will make controllers uncompetitive, therefore de-facto banned. the stream of players joining melee from the latest smash titles will almost completely dry up if controllers are not competitive.

Either trying to find a OEM golden grail will take up tons of time, or buying a custom will require just as much if not more money than a box.
Boxes would make the game more accessible to those who want to get into high tier play, without searching far and wide for a good GCC around the same price.
Obviously the box has advantages over a controller. So does a GCC that's been modded to guarantee back-dash vs one that hasn't.
Either ALL controllers and boxes need to follow a set of rules/restrictions, or everything should be fair game IMO.

My opinion is that any difference in hardware between players is unfair. Some argue that it does not give an advantage, but if that was true then why would anyone spend money on fancy custom hardware? It may not always be as simple as "better", there are often both advantages and disadvantages, but that is still what i consider as unfair. The biggest issue is that it all costs money and not everyone can afford to buy the hardware that works best for them, so allowing custom hardware can make a competitive scene inaccessible for newcomers. It is impractical to work in absolutes, i would consider some amount leniency is required, but i feel like a lot of esports are hard to compete in with skill alone. I am not a competitive gamer right now and have never played melee so it is not really my concern though.
the issue is that not all game cube controllers are equal, so you can buy an official Nintendo controller and it would be no where close to a "good" Nintendo controller
this hardware is actually bridging the price floor because as you can imagine, a variable quality good thats rare, tends to ramp up in price (and that's not even getting into things like notching your controller, theres just a lot of hidden costs)
so, the quality assured boxx is actually a good controller for democratizing the tech skill
@@NonJohns That is somewhat of an issue i found when looking into speedrunning of old games; trying to get hold of legit hardware for old consoles is just not easy and emulators are usually not perfectly accurate, there can be all sorts of differences between them that can give you an advantage or disadvantage and it is not always obvious. Stuff like this is why i have mostly lost interest in competitive gaming. I love to see the techniques and glitches people can perform but i no longer care much about the competition to be the best. Nobody can outperform a TAS anyway, humans are becoming obsolete.

What's it matter? It is not like a turbo feature that enables you to have robotic levels of inputs or a macro that lets you perform entire combos with the press of a button. The players are still doing all the inputs and everyone has access to these controllers you just need to buy one and they can be pretty cheap.
It is not like you have roll the dice on finding a good quality OEM controller from an increasingly limited supply and spend significant amounts of money on someone with the skills to modify that controller. Only for that controller to have poor durability requiring sinking more money into repairs and often replacements.

The melee community is so weird to me, you claim to want competitive integrity and shit yet the controllers you want to force everyone to use die and are incredibly inconsistent, you shouldn't have to hunt for a functional controller that will be useless after frequent use. Imagine forcing players to develop RSIs because your nostalgia hazed brains can't adapt to change.
I don’t think the box controller is a problem as a blanket controller. However, the box has benefits that a controller doesn’t. You can do things on a box that are physically impossible on a controller. I think they should be on the same playing field. I don’t know what that is exactly but I mostly just wanted to see how cool this set was and how times are changing in a game 22 years old which is insane!

The competitive integrity of the game is inherently flawed from a controller standpoint unless you force unmodified untested gamecube controllers, but that shit is ridiculous, and so is claiming that a digital input with fixed inputs is inherently superior to a analog input in a ANALOG GAME there are tradeoffs that you have to accept unless you want a game where people are only playing with non cherry picked GC controllers.
You can modify a Gamecube controller all on your own.
