Why McDonald’s Flopped In Vietnam

  • The fast food industry thrives in most of the world. Chains like McDonald's and Burger King typically come out on top in the $651 billion fast food industry. In Vietnam, however, the brands have failed to take off. McDonald's and Burger King have more than 36,000 and 16,000 locations across the globe, respectively. But in Vietnam, McDonald's has 17 stores and Burger King has 13.
In Vietnam, a country spoiled for choice when it comes to food, some U.S. fast food chains are struggling to compete with the local competition.
Check out the video above to see why McDonald's and Burger King are flopping in Vietnam.

As a Vietnamese I felt great about the big fast food guys failing. It means the smaller vendors are thriving. I would say it's the low cost, around-the-corner availability, familiar good taste, and the service (i.e. food being prepared right in front of you by a friendly person that you know by face and name). The sharability and "chicken" factors have nothing to do with it. We Vietnamese eat a lot of beef too, and French fries are very sharable. McD and BK had an easier times getting in the other Asian markets maybe due to people's willingness to adopt new things, but they didn't come in and completely dominate. Street foods still rule the streets in India, China, Japan, Korea etc. Given time and proper strategy they may thrive in Viet Nam as well, like KFC did. But they can never win against or replace the traditional street food culture, it is our way of life in Asia.

When I was a kid I was so confused why McDonald's was called a "fast food restaurant", as it was neither fast nor cheap at the time in my hometown. It was much more expensive than most of the local restaurants and street food stands, and you needed to wait much longer as well. The food was so pricey that poor people couldn't afford it, and the others only went there occasionally for some special events, like a reward to the kids or just made a decision to dine out as a whole family on a festival. It was never perceived as "fast food" until the recent ten years when people started to get enough income to eat there more often, and food from other stores starts to cost you almost the same as well.
So the situation in Vietnam is not surprising to me. The only problem is the marketing strategy - what do you think you are in the eyes of the Vietnamese? If you think you're a fast food restaurant, which is not true in the local's eyes, then everything you put on the marketing strategy would be a joke to them. The marketing strategy they used in my hometown tended to work, as they tried to make themselves look "convenient but luxurious". It filled the gap between "fine restaurant" and "top-level fast food", which is why people would still go there occasionally.

@@hansenyang4014 I'm from a city in a relatively poorer region in China. Twenty years ago a set in McDonald's cost you twice but with only half the portion than a local fine restaurant, five times or even more than the local food stands where you can have a pretty good meal. It still costs you slightly more than the local food stands now, but the price there is finally the same as the average level fast food restaurants. The only problem is that people don't get used to their style of food, and McDonald's hasn't changed much in the past twenty years (compared to KFC which is pretty much a Chinese restaurant now). That's why it's big but not huge in my hometown, and they're sometimes even struggling in some pretty busy areas - if I can eat in the local restaurants or KFC which serve the food I like more, why bother going to McDonald's?

Tom B it’s because most Vietnamese who grow up in Vietnam are not accustomed to cheese/butter or dairy use in cooking which a lot of Western cuisines use so they assume that all Western cuisines are greasy and fatty. Also South East Asian cuisines are heavily spiced compared to most Western so to the Vietnamese palate Western cuisines seem “bland”. Me, I find each kind of cuisine has its own beauty but I’m the odd one because I was raised in a Vietnamese-French culinary family.

I think this perspective has some validity, but it also ignores the success and pervasiveness of fried chicken fast food options in Vietnam. Three new fried chicken shops have just opened in my neighborhood (in Saigon/HCM). One of them is Popeye's, another is a local franchise, and there are still many KFC's and a few Jollibee's around.
These chains are finding more success than burger options here, but they are certainly not more healthy.

I have been waiting to go back to Vietnam since I had to cancel my trip there because of the CV19 outbreak. One of the first things I will have is a Banh Mi from Vua Banh Mi. However I do avoid Vietnamese street food and a Vietnamese friend told me if you really want to get sick eat street food. I walk past them and stuff is left out in the open and flies on it and exhaust fumes from the heavy traffic stuff that should be kept cold out in the open. I love Vietnamese food, but no thanks to street food.

A neat and accurate assessment (as of 2018?) after my numerous stays in Viet Nam; and encouraging to me haha, to see that the American (and British?) fast food companies have been unable to crack this very hard nut!
In recent years, a number of locally owned Ga Ran places opened in Sai Gon, that can arguably satisfy local taste and habits more...eg, stop at the store front on the bike with your friend, order and be gone in minutes, at half the price I guess.
Wondered about Starbucks etc, too. Big central sites , but up against a whole different way of having coffee with thousands of Vietnamese Quan Ca-Phe serving some of the best coffee I ever tasted. Give me Banh Mi (BBQed meat sandwich) and a cold beer on the street any. day. Or a coffee at the open mics at weekends. Got to love Viet Nam.
But the youth may see it a bit different...😂

Starbucks would go belly up in Vietnam, though with how amazing Vietnamese coffee is.

Japan and Korea have a bit of an american fascination with both countries receiving relief support for decades despite having rocky beginnings so eating American fast food is kinda like eating like americans (this is a general deduction from family and personal experience in Korea.) China honestly just likes chicken and most fast food push chicken harder there for success, Vietnam on the other hand has more adults, young and old that aren't used to american culture and probably aren't interested or as fixated on it.

The prices for ingredients in Vietnam is way cheaper because most food is produced domestically (there's also import from China with 1/10 the price + 100x the health hazard but that's another issue). So a luxury bowl of Pho is around $3-4 with lots of toppings, in family owned restaurants you can have a good bowl for $2 and we consider this a full meal already. While the current price of a single Big Mac is around $3 (and it's not really exciting in comparison to fried chicken, we already have meat in bread).
The reason we love fried chicken like KFC, Popeyes.. is because it's new, we didn't have crunchy chicken pieces in our cuisine (because it uses a lot of oil). Kids love fried chickens so parents are willing to treat their kids to a KFC meal once in a while but adults don't like it that much.
When western fast-food first come to Vietnam, obesity in the US is already a known problem, we've seen the images on the news. So we already know that it shouldn't be eaten regularly.
So adding to the high prices, known for being unhealthy doesn't help, and there are plenty of more delicious alternatives.
Regarding Starbucks, I think the only thing they did was bringing up the price of local brands, seriously, before it I didn't even hear of the Viet brands, and coffee prices got higher (the narrative I see on the media is kinda like I know the price is high but it's still better and cheaper than Starbucks). Oh, they also added a location for people to take pictures and show off on their social media (personal experience, a picture of a Highland coffee cup will work better, Starbucks would make people think you're pretentious, unless you buy it and say it's a gift-then you really are pretentious).

And by the way, fast food is not the one people think: if we understand the meaning of "fast" the same way, then the Vietnamese street food is the fast food _par excellence._
Indeed, when you order a _phở_ or a _bún bò Huế,_ you have it right away; at McDonald's, you need to wait until 10 minutes after payment until you get your burger or your French fries!

In countries like India Indonesia Thailand where there are many local vendors too where the price is so much cheaper. People still consume mcdonalds a lot. Sometimes in these countries mcdonalds have somehow elevated through marketing that their premium prices means they're selling premium food. With the kind of prices for say a 4 person would spend in McDonalds in almost all s.e.a countries they could just go to a really good restraunt.
So prices and local street food I think is not really the main factor here. Now if say western food I general are unpopular in vietnam then it makes a lot of sense why mcdonalds can't thrive.

Vietnamese person born prior to 2000 are not into western based food product accept for KFC( which did a better job in getting to world wide market from day one).
I invested over $85,000 in opening first type of Starbucks coffee franchise with a free cinema movie, and I failed because majority of Vietnamese preferred buying Vietnamese milk coffee outside for half the price.
It’s great that Macdonald’s and Burger King entered the Vietnamese market, but I just hope they hang in there and make it happen.

Not really. The US won every major battle, and most of the small ones. The South Vietnamese lost against the North who were backed and supported by the 2 largest communist countries of the day. The US was not in the war when the war was lost in 1975. There were actually 2 wars. The first one ended in January of 1973 with the signing of the Paris Peace Accords.
The US left when that war ended. Most US combat troops were already gone in 1971. The withdrawal started in 1969 when President Nixon was elected. He won the election by promising to turn over the fighting to the South Vietnamese, bring US troops home and end the war, which was what he did. The commies reneged on the peace treaty and restarted the war after the US pulled out.
South Vietnam lost the war in April of 1975 with the fall of Saigon.
      Don't be an ignorant moron.

even in india, the price of mcdonalds is really high - it's more of an upscale restaurant than a "convinience food". it would cost around Rs. 300-400 per person in McDonalds for a decent lunch. a feast at an mid-scale indian restaurant with 20-25 varieties of food would cost around 1200 for a family of 4. value for money? still, many do go to McDonalds, but as a once in 3 months luxury and not a daily convinience. i would say that even that is reducing now, as the cultural weight behind burgers (the "american"ness of it") becomes less significant and people are starting to realize that burgers are both unhealthy and really bland compared to an equally unhealthy indian delicacy. value for calories?

I agree they're more influenced by American culture but that tradition at eating at KFC is limited. Out of probably hundreds of friends (I live in Japan) I know maybe 2-3 that have done that. KFC is good, I've eaten it like 1-2 times since I moved here 4 years ago, but expensive compared to other food and it doesn't match that higher price with higher quality. (Even though it's most definitely higher quality than American KFC)
