The same circuit board to be made in the US, it would cost me 10x as much. The reason is because of environmental policies in the US make it so prohibitively expensive to disposal of used toxic chemical.

As a kid growing in a Romanian village I remember going to an open market on Sundays and seeing all the cheap poorly built toys all of them carrying the "Made in China" text.
    They were so bad.
But then I started noticing an improvement and a few years ago I took the risk: bought a Xiaomi phone. Needless to say the next phone after that one was also a Xiaomi and I'm now the proud owner of a TV Box made by them, a screw driver, a fitness brand. Thank you for your honest report. I visited China last summer. When I came back and landed in Newark airport. It felt Newark was 100 years behind Beijing or even Xiamen airport. China's infrastructures are quite good. In China, I noticed every subway station has safety doors to protect passengers from incoming trains. If you want that to happen in NYC, MTA will inflate prices 10 times more, and drag it for 10 years. For the union votes, Cuomo or his successor will continue to turn blind eyes on MTA' corruptions and allow NY's roads and bridges to decay.

People have no understanding about this stuff, especially in US! all the things you're getting it now are fully made in China (or other Asian country) or the components of it! those stuffs which were used to be luxury in the past, now everyone can have it or somehow still can afford. Asking for them to come back to the US is impossible bcz it's gonna drive up the prices & less consumers gonna buy it, So, Less profit for the companies & less jobs for stores or retailers in US. Made in China doesn't mean it's garbage cheap stuff, it's depend up to your money, you can buy the best one with right amount of money or low life stuff with less money. Almost all the Amazon stuff is coming from China, 3$ phone charger on Ali express (alibaba) people are selling for 20-30$, these days even luxury cars or plane parts are coming from China. Without Asian countries most of the stuff were going to be nothing more than a dream of High class people, Phone market is big example of this.

Here's a little secret. All products of a specific type are manufactured by specific companies in China. It's like industries for industries. For example bicycles. Companies like Trek, Merida, Cannondale, etc. have only one factory. And there is not even a division in that company for each of these companies. The only distinction is the mold. They have a separate mold for Trek, and a separate mold for Cannondale. Then they paint frames. Some of them are even being painted together when they require the same color. They just stamp the logo and then they install the drivetrain.
Same is true for shoes, phones, safes, appliances, etc.
And the worst part is, because the technology is being shared with the factory, the factory sells the blueprints to chinese bootleggers. That's why some chinese-owned products sport exactly the same features and builds as the original product. The only distinction is that some of the legitimate companies have components that are sourced outside of china and some of these components actually determine the performance and quality of the products.

totally disagree with that. if the factories are selling the blue prints of the customers like adidas or nike they will try to sue them but whats more effective is terminate the partnership with them which will destroy there factory since those big customers occupy 40-60% of their capacity and the factory if loosing this looses their existence. I few has done that in the past and they all not existing anymore.

For example, you can't find university textbooks in here and, if you find one, if it costs 70 dollars in Amazon in the United States, in Peru it costs 500 soles, more than 100 dollars, making almost impossible to be acquired for many people, making the problem of high prices not only for technology but also in education, health and much more. As an example, my mother is a university professor and she receives 1800 soles monthly, which is equivalent to 545 us dollars, now you can imagine how difficult buying a laptop to study is.

It is not only about cheap labour but also the taxes and rules companies need to maintain while setting up a plant in other countries. If they target developing countries then it will be easier to pace up their production to a lot extent because the rules will be flexible.

A lot depends on Inflation as well. All the Emerging Economies are highly inflated compared to the countries in the west. Even when you calculate the GDP on PPP basis, it will be more than GDP on Nominal value basis. For example, China's GDP per capita (Nominal) is just above $10000 and GDP per capita (PPP) is more than $20000. This is the reason why Prices are more in China than in US.

Sidenote: Starbucks and other food food stores vary in price all around China. For example a burger can be $6 at McDonald's in Shanghai, $4 in Wuhan and $2.5 in the small city of Qinzhou. So the Starbucks part wasn't really explained.

    • @apigfarmer116

It is universally true that prices of the same product/service varies in big(Shanghai) medium(Wuhan) and small(Qinzhou) cities, due to cost of land & buildings, utlilities, wages, taxes, etc. Do you expect an identical house has the same price in Manhattan and Boise, Idaho and Cheyenne, Wyoming? Or a meal in Paris and Amritsar, India? Or rent in Tokyo and Yubari, Hokkaido? Why did you bring up a point that is common sense?

Take clothes for example Nike will manufacture all its stuff in China, but rather than letting it go straight to Chinese stores it will first be exported to the US, then re-exported back to China… they claim it’s for quality assurance purposes. This happens in so many industries, extremely un-environmentally friendly & obviously many more costs involved.
