Sneaky Ways Fast Food Restaurants Get You To Spend Money
i worked at a fast food place, we were required to keep asking “upsize?” “add on?” “if you change ___ to ___, it’s only $2 extra” at the end of every sentence. we’d also talk about the menus if given a chance and would point to the food then “accidentally” move our fingers to the add-ons. you’d be surprised at the amount of people that initially only wanted 1 thing but ended up with way more. be firm in your choices and don’t get swayed, it’s not worth it
My eyesights are bad.. And so does my language.. So I ended up with a sundae only
So they trained y’all to feed into my anxiety 🙃
I work at kfc (aus) and were trained to ask if they want to upsize all the time idk about the add on ones
@@eehhh636 lol.
Yeah, it is sales. Same in every industry on the lowest end. I worked in telesales for major telecommunications company. We had to say certain things, we were recorded, had dedicated team to listen and give us pointers how to improve. I did quit the job but used the knowledge to advance in life and tbh shit works.
they can't trick me if i have no money to spend
it’s amusing and sad at the same time 😂
Not if you borrow from the register.
You can sell your house, and use your money to eat McD's burger everyday, and try to live on the street
Can't get fired if I don't have a job

One of the best things I learned working fast food is if you don't want one of the elements of a combo, don't order the combo. If you're gonna order water instead of soda, just get fries, a burger, and your free water. If you don't like the fries, just get a burger and a drink. It's almost always gonna be cheaper to get the two things you want than to pay a slightly discounted price for all 3. More complicated example, if I want a sausage egg mcgriddle, it's cheaper to get a sausage mcgriddle add egg than to get a SEC mcgriddle subtract cheese. Only pay for what you actually want, no more.
In my country at most places you get an infinite refill drink or a tiny bottle of water for the same price.
During summer i got a cup of ice with a little green tea, it was basically flavored water by the time i finished the food outside.
Not here, we have no free water and no free refills. When a burger is 8 bucks and a menu with fries and drink 12, it's very worth to get the menu.
(Seperate it would be at least 16)
We don't get free water in germany
I used to work at McDs, when people would order combos and ask for a water, I’d always try to take it out of a combo to make it cheaper. One of my managers would always get mad and make me keep it as a combo and give them a water bottle (which is actually an upcharge!). Also, several times when I did this I’ve had customers argue with me (for like 10 minutes in the middle of lunch rush one time) that they wanted a combo with a cup of water not just a sandwich, fry, and a cup of water (which is the same thing but cheaper, plus we literally cannot substitute a cup of water into a combo).
most countries dont offer FREE water

Krystian Śrek the french fries and soda at McDonald’s are usually what makes people fat. Not the burger itself. But most people don’t go and get a burger alone and a cup of water
I know it's been cheaper, but I remember when a combo was never more than 5 bucks. A family of four could get 4 combos for 20 bucks and that was dinner.
I mean inflation also exists, how long ago was this?
I remember getting 4 quarter chicken and chips for $10 and a Whopper for a $1.65!!!!! I wanna go back to those times....

Z you know its the janitor that cleans it not people who make the food
Fast food restaurants always confuse me. For example at McDonald's 20 nuggets and an entire basket of fries is 8 dollars, but if you order 10 nuggets and medium fries it's 7 dollars. Makes no sense how their pricing works.
"might as well spend the extra dollar and get 20 nuggets!" makes perfect marketing sense
Kinda like illusion of 3 choice. For example if you have option A: 6 nuggets for 5$, B: 12 nuggets for 12$ and C: 16 nuggets for 14. If you saw all 3 options you would probably pick option C, thinking "look, C is so much better than B, im saving 2$, compared to option C!" You are right. You are saving money if you compare B and C. But if you compare A and C you will see this is not the case anymore. Option B is the worst option. Nobody will take it. it only exist to trick people to buy much larger option, that is C. It may even trick some people who originally only wanted option A to grab C and that is their plan
They want you to think you’re getting a better deal by ordering the larger, more expensive option. Same with their soda. A small is 16oz and $1.59. A large is 32oz and $1.89. You get 100% more soda for 15% more money.
Medium is cheaper than a large
@@makeawishkid8039 How is that not indeed the better deal, it is more expensive overall while/for getting more (of course it will be if you get more) but people who like and want more will like getting that bigger amount.
When I was a kid and teenager, in my family fast food was something you would get once a month because it cost too much. Even now, I eat at fast food chains once a month or once every two months. Can't believe people actually eat fast food every other day.
My family rarely went to fast food and mostly because it’s so unhealthy. I’m glad my parents got me into the habit because even though I wanted to eat it as a kid cuz I saw everyone eating at it, now I don’t really care about it
And I have no clue how ppl eat so much fast food like are they tryna get heart disease 😭

I thought my fast food consumption was minor, until I read that at twice a week I was considered a “heavy user” by the industry... that woke me up. Anyway I trained myself off it and now it’s probably twice a year, and the rest is home cooking
There was a point in my life where I was at ~2 fast food meals a week. I was in my early twenties, working late hours to impress the boss, would get home at 9pm, completely exhausted, didn't want to cook. Uber Eats/Deliveroo had a host of good fast food options in my area, so it was tap tap boom. Best part, I didn't gain any weight. I'd be obese if I did that nowadays.

I like the point about healthy food being expensive in comparison. I'd like to see healthier options being more competitively priced.
Convenient, cheap, healthy. Pick 2. If you want cheaper, healthy food, you’re gonna have to shop and cook it yourself.
No can do. Fast food is government subsidized.
@@StonesAndSand in the video, they brought up how soda is the most profitable item. Many US cities have excise taxes on sugar sweetened beverages (ie soda).
If healthier food was more competitively priced, a whole lot of people in big pharma would lose their jobs, and there fore a lot of politicians would lose the silver lining to their pockets. Not gonna happen.

Then I saw that a ❗️4 piece chicken nugget is $1.99 and a 6 piece is $2.00 ❗️😂😂
LMFAO WTF
I’ve worked there for a year and a half, I know so much bullshit about the food. The 10 piece is 4.75 and the 20 piece nugget is $5. To add on bacon, it’s $2.10. Filet o fish, which usually sits for an hour, and only gets half a slice of cheese, is $5. More expensive then a quarter pounder.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that it’s cheaper to order 2 mcdoubles then 2 cheeseburgers

Imagine a Small drink costing $1, Medium $2, Large $3.
Instead we have Small for $2.60, or Large for $3. It's not "save more when you upsize" - but instead - "start way overpriced and get closer to actual value as you upsize".
I've been laughing at all the old comments especially with the prices. It's ridiculously expensive to eat fast food now with everything going up weekly.
There's certainly some manipulative pricing at play, but I think it's worth mentioning that the cost of servicing a customer doesn't increase linearly with the quantity of food. If the size ratio of drinks is 1:2:3, then the fair price ratio is somewhere between that and 1:1:1, with the exact amount depending on how high the fixed costs of service are in proportion to the cost of the food.
@mvmlego1212 I hadn't considered that.
Solid point.
Apple has this strategy with their phones.
Large for 3$?!?! What the genuine hell are those prices? Is this normal in us?

Lol I went to McDonald’s after like 5 years and saw that shit 😂 I was mad confused. 9 nuggets for like £3.59 and then 20 nuggets for £4.29 or some shit
Did you go for the 20 piece option?
Its how they get you lol. If you decide to order 2 10 piece nuggets, they won't change it to a 20, they'll charge you for the 10 pieces.
it's also the reason why (at least where I am) ordering 4 €1 cheeseburgers and paying €4 gets you sooo much more food than any €4 burger in the menu.
the cook always sighs because he knows i've basically caught a way to trick the system; he cant refuse to sell me these 4 burgers, but as he places all 4 bottom buns each one side by side and spreads all the ingredients on top systematically, before wrapping the burgers in paper, putting them in a bag and giving them to me, you can tell he knows I'm getting the favorable end of the deal here vs the restaurant.

This really made me think where my money goes. Will power people. Just buy a roast, thin slice the whole thing, steam a few vegetables, butter some bread, and there you go.

As someone who worked for a McDonald's for about 5-6 months I can say that I partially agree. People spend way too much on fast food but it's not too terribly difficult to get a good 800-1000 calories for less than $10 which is more than enough for most people.
Yep. This video is silly. I eat once a day, usually fast food, I usually pay $10 to $15. That's a great price for all your food for the day.

@@zeroheroes4081all fast food is trash for you
My secret to getting fast food is knowing what you want beforehand, and crunching some numbers beforehand to know how you can get a basic version of what you like for cheap. At McDonald's, if I am buying, I usually get a McDouble, small fries, and a large sweet tea (their tea is the bomb). This totals up to $4.48 where I live. The larger size sounds tempting, but I just tell myself I am being somewhat healthier by not upsizing. The 2 for $3.19 menu (anything listed under the dollar menu section that involves normal food items) does knock off a bit, especially at certain locations. Although sometimes I will splurge and get something that costs more. This is where the app comes in handy. I like their coffee drinks, so I will sometimes order a frappe, latte, or something like that. So I will check the app to see what I have. I get points from my splurge orders and ordering for my family. So when my points are getting ready to expire, I usually order either a medium fry or ice cream (assuming they can make it) to use them up. Otherwise, I look through the deals. There is my 20% off daily coupon I use if I splurge to a total more than $7.50 or if I order a number 7 or something. Otherwise, if I want a coffee drink, I will use the $1.50 off coupons for medium or large frappes, mochas, and lattes (if you don't have it, buy one of those drinks and use the app in some way while purchasing it, then it may give it to you). It doesn't really save any money over getting the small (in fact, I recommend only ordering the small frappes if you don't have a coupon unless you really want it because the medium is almost twice as much as the small), but it gets you a bit more for not nearly as much more than the small. I have their system sorta figured out for how I can maximize my dollar for the food I want and trying to not eat too much at the same time (otherwise I would say use the daily $1 large fry coupon to technically save even more with my regular order). Either way, I am sure I am doing exactly what McDonald's wants because it causes me to eat there more than other fast food joints knowing their system, although I love McDonald's anyways, so it doesn't matter. I could do the same for any massive fast food restaurant chain, except Chick Fil A which seems to be expensive no matter what.

I also work in fast food and while the customers usually ask me to upsize a drink, I would ask them if they would like to upsize their side too (just so their order is correct and won’t say anything when they get a wrong sized item). 8 times out of 10, they would say yes, make my fries large and it just blows my mind how addicting these places can be.
I agree, I also work in fast food and it disgusts me how often people will get a large size of everything in their meal, especially a large soda, sometimes with no ice so that there's even more sugar-filled carbonated acid. You wonder how people can eat like that, but then you realize after researching videos like this that the marketing makes it look so appealing and ignores the obvious health detriments.

I mean, it is a sales position essentially. That's not strange.
@@Xfirefire 2 years ago lmao, but yeah.
20% of our daily income came from extras. like if they wanted extra cheese, chips, meat etc.
20% is a lot lmao. people would pay $1,50 for a slice of cheese.
I've done the math and it's remarkable: no matter what the sale, coupon or whatever, if you want a complete meal with a side and drinks, the price is almost always close to the normal price.
I work at a McDonald’s but I actively try to make an order as cheap as possible for a customer. More commonly it’s around 50¢ to $1, but more recently thanks to a deal currently going on at my work (2 for $6) is cheaper by like $3/pair for someone who is ordering two combos of items part of the deal (Big Mac, QPC, 10 Piece, or Filet-O-Fish). All I have to do is break them up from being listed as combos. I don’t know if they originally intended to order x amount of combos, but I don’t try to get them to spend more and I only tell them about whatever they ask.
For $3 you make 2 plates of rice and chicken at home enough to eat 2 meals, $2.99 for 40 bottles of water, each bottle $0.075 for a bottle. $3.15 for 2 meals and 2 bottles of water. but one McDonalds meal is $9 lol
People eat out all the time and then wonder why they have no money...
That's a fair point, but you're also forgetting that eating that meal every day would make you hate your life. Plus that $3 doesn't include seasoning for the meal, which if you've ever eating food, you know seasonings are required to make things taste good. Also, I'm a huge water drinker, only drink soda with meals, but washing your food down with water is just gross. Might as well just mix it in with the meal and make every meal a soup then right? Since it's so cheap of course.... I get your point at the end of the day. I used to say the same thing when I worked at McDonalds. People would spend $40 on food for their family, when they could have gone to the grocery store and spent $40 to feed their family for more than 1 meal. No one is going to eat rice and chicken plain their entire lives tho, and if you do, you just have no taste buds and I envy you
@@combatwombat594 you envy him for that? You’ve just contradicted yourself. Do you even know what that word means?
